"The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process has been the dominant gold recovery process since the early 1980s. CIP has proven to be very adaptable for a wide range of ores and circuit configurations. The key performance indicator for CIP circuits is the minimisation of soluble gold losses to tailings, however, it is also important to operate the circuit efficiently (maximising gold loadings on carbon and minimising carbon inventory). Over the last 30 years the Curtin Gold Technology Group has studied CIP circuits as part of an on-going collaborative industry funded project (the AMIRA Gold Processing Technology Project). In the early years the project undertook basic research into understanding activated carbon, and its management in the circuit. More recently the development of process models and instrumentation has provided additional tools to assist operators. The results show that while most CIP circuits operate well, there are still significant opportunities for further cost savings, or additional revenue. This paper reviews the observations arising from this work, including key requirements for good carbon management, the results of benchmarking and industry surveys of carbon circuit over 20 years, the value of process modelling of CIP circuits to establish operating parameters, and the use of automated instrumentation to better optimise carbon control in the circuit.INTRODUCTION The introduction of activated carbon to recover gold from cyanide leach solutions in the last quarter of the 20th century was the most significant development in gold ore processing since the advent of cyanidation seventy years before. Replacing the Merrill–Crowe zinc cementation step with carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits provided a process that allowed the treatment of lower grade and problematic ores (e.g. high-clay ores), at lower capital and operating costs, and higher metal recoveries. The CIP circuit was first developed in the 1950s at the Carlton Mill, Cripple Creek, Colorado. All the components of the modern CIP process came to fruition at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota in 1973 (Fast, 1988). From the late 1970s onward a variation of CIP, carbon-in-leach (CIL) which combined the leach and adsorption stages, became the preferred circuit design in most parts of the word."

This paper first covers the general and economic geology of the Coxheath Hills area, and then outlines the exploration and mining development that has been carried out since the first discovery of copper in the area in 1875. The work of Mariner Mines Limited from 1963 to the present time is detailed, particular attention being paid to the recent discoveries of copper, silver and lead mineralization that have greatly enhanced the potential of the area.

The hard roof in underground coal mines is generally considered as a main cause that induces disasters in working faces and entries, such as rock burst and windblast. Hydraulic fracturing technology is an effective approach to weaken hard roof to reduce ground pressure and control rock burst. The state and achievements associated with hydraulic fracturing technology applied in Chinese coal mines are summarized in this paper. Theories related to hydraulic fracturing are of the essence in fracture design to determine the fracture initiation and propagation pressure and predict the geometry and the characteristics of hydraulically induced fractures. Initially, theory of elasticity was employed to determine the breakdown pressure for a vertical borehole where the rock medium is assumed to be elastic. However, porosity and pore fluid have an influence on the borehole breakdown pressure, and then the poroelasticity theory was applied. Arbitrary deviated boreholes in practice are rather common and the maximum tensile stress criterion was employed to determine borehole breakdown pressure. The effect of natural crack in the rock medium on the initiation pressure has been taken into consideration through fracture mechanics. Meanwhile, considerable achievements have been made on hydraulic fracturing tools and equipment, and a set of mature hydraulic fracturing technologies for hard roof control are available. Some comprehensive investigations on the hydraulic fracturing for hard roof weakening are presented, and successful field applications in the Jincheng and Luan coal mining districts are introduced. Finally, the unsolved problems related to hydraulic fracturing are also put forward.

"In the UK, Ireland, and Western Europe, the mineral resource and reserve reporting standard is the PERC Code, developed and maintained by the Pan-European Reserves and Resources Reporting Committee, which is a standing committee set up under the auspices of a number of professional organisations which include the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (loM3), the Geological Society of London (GSL), the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and the Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI) to develop a Pan-European reporting code. The PERC Code supercedes the old IMMM Reporting Code 2001 and is recognised by the UK securities regulators and stock exchanges.""FOREWORD1 The Pan European Reserves and Resources Reporting Committee (PERC) Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (further referred to as 'the Code') sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for Public Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe. During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

"Syncrude's overburden removal requirement ranges from 20 million to 30 million bank cubic metres per year to meet tarsand demands for the production of 129,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. The economic tar-sand lies beneath a variable thickness of overburden materials, composed of silts, clays, some sands of lacustrine origin, wind-deposited sand dunes, and out-wash sands and gravels.For the removal of overburden, Syncrude commissioned its own mobile equipment fleet in January 1981. This fleet consists of two Demag 241 hydraulic shovels, ten Titan 33-15B trucks and support equipment. Prior to this, all overburden removal was being carried out by contractors.This paper presents an overview of overburden removal at Syncrude, with particular reference to the performance of its own fleet.IntroductionThe Syncrude Tar Sands Plant was officially opened on September 15, 1978. After an expenditure of approximately $2.26 billion, the second and the largest commercial tarsands plant was on stream toward a permit production rate of 129,400 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. The Syncrude Plant, a joint venture of six oil companies, the federal government and the Alberta government, is a major step forward toward the goal of Canadian energy self-sufficiency.The Mildred Lake operation of Syncrude Canada Ltd. Is located 40 km north of Fort McMurray and 480 km northeast of Edmonton in the Province o f Alberta.Synthetic crude oil leaving the plant is a blend of two-third s gas oil and one-third naphtha. The two streams combine in a pipeline and flow to Edmonton. The product takes six days to make the journey, arriving at four locations in the city Imperial's Strathcona Refinery, Gulf's Edmonton Refinery, the Interprovincial pipeline terminal and the Trans-Mountain pipeline terminal. Each Syncrude owner receives a share of oil equal; to its percentage of ownership in the project. At the present time, the oil is being utilized by Canadian refineries from Vancouver to Montreal."

The orebodies at Copper Mounta1n lie along and within a few hundred feet of the contact of an intrusive stock of gabbro with a series of bedded volcanic rocks of the Nicola formation. These. orebodies are all entirely within the volcanic series but in many cases the centre line of the orebody at depth is directly under the gabbro contact at the surface, due to a slight overhang of the gabbro. The gabbro and volcanic rocks are cut by a number of faults and fault zones which did not materially affect early mining operations, but, as undeground openings increased in size, the faults became more important factors in determining mining methods and procedure. Caving methods were adopted to take advantage of ground weakness in fault zones, and the effect of ground subsidence which resulted from the division of the ground 1nto large, independent blocks by faulting had to be considered in planning the sequence of mining of certain ore blocks. The faults have been divided into two classes: the longitudinal system and the cross faults, or 'breaks' as they are termed locally. In addition to the two classes of faults, the zones of parallel ore fracture also control mining procedure, but to a lesser degree, in regard to caving or ground subsidence. A third structural feature which influences mining procedure is the mine dyke system. The longitudinal or main fault system roughly parallels the gab? bro contact and is made up of a number of branches and auxiliary fractures. The main fault itself is essentially vertical, but there are a number of branches and fractures on each side of it which, though parallel m strike, may dip as flat as 50 degrees toward or away from the main fault. The full width of the main fault system has not been determined, but it is known to extend beyond the zone of mine workings. A marked schistosity follows the main fault and both schistosity and chloritic alteration have been noticed along the secondary faults of this system. Several prominent orebodies lie along the main fault and its branches. The influence of the main fault system on mining is probably related more to subsidence than to actual cavi.ng, although it is effective in both.

EARLY in 1951, Falconbridge undertook a research program aimed at the development of a sulphate roasting process for the recovery of the non-ferrous rnetals from the nickeliferous pyrrhotite fraction of Falconbridge ore, in order to reduce the tonnage of iron entering the srnelter. Such a method, it was hoped, would permit a high recovery of the nickel from pyrrhotite otherwise entering the smelter feed, thus not only raising the grade of the latter and reducing its iron content, but also providing an iron oxide residue useful as a source of by-product iron ore. At an early stage in the exploratory laboratory test work it was found that the degree to which the nickel could be solubilized by the sulphating roasting treatment was limited by particle size and the ex-tent to which the pyrrhotite concentrates were freed of the nickel occurring as physically separable pentlandite, a mineral relatively difficult to roast. "In this work the dissolution, precipitation and adsorption behaviour of gold in acidic iron sulphate media containing small amounts of chloride ions is investigated via batch laboratory tests and OLI thermodynamic calculations over the temperature range 25-250°C. Chloride ions may be present in industrial pressure oxidation/pressure leaching (POX/PL) operations due to elevated water salinity levels or due to intentional addition as is the case of the CESL Copper Pressure Leaching Process. Thermodynamic calculations show that AuCl4 - may form depending on the free Cl-/Au ratio and temperature, its stability increasing with increasing Cl- concentration and decreasing with increasing temperature. On the other hand during POX/PL, we know that massive precipitation of iron in various hydrolysis products and compounds occurs. Hence of interest is the question how AuCl4 - that may form during leaching interacts with the iron precipitation products. Gold(III) chloride was found to co-precipitate with iron(III) (oxy) hydroxides and arsenates forming in the autoclave but not with natrojarosite. Upon further investigation it was discovered that activated carbon added in the autoclave (as done in CIL) acts as preferential sink for the mobilized gold, hence opening the potential for the development of a direct cyanide-free gold recovery process in acidic sulphate leach reactors.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of gold from ores and concentrates has evolved over the years with processing routes becoming increasingly complex. Given the high value of gold, any reduction in losses during recovery operations constitutes an important economic benefit. One such loss that needs to be addressed is the potential solubilisation of gold during pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory sulphidic gold feedstocks. For example, Agnico Eagle Mines reported a loss in gold recovery due to the formation of a gold chloride complex (Garofalo, 2009). Gold is known to form complexes in solution, such as gold(III) chloride, if an excess of chloride ions are present. The fate of such soluble gold chloride during pressure oxidation and the subsequent neutralization of the acidic discharge slurry will determine if gold is lost or recovered in the downstream cyanidation operation. Thus it is of interest to know under what conditions gold chloride may stay soluble or co-precipitate along primary (formed in the autoclave) or secondary (formed during neutralization) precipitates. Furthermore, the mode of co-precipitated gold, such as adsorption on iron compounds, like goethite and hematite (Machesky et al., 1990; Nachayev, 1984); substitution in one of the precipitated phases; or finally chemical reduction to metallic state would have consequences in terms of gold recovery."

Modern management of uranium mine or mill waste storage facilities (WSFs) often requires that they be remediated or decommissioned with a cover system. In addition to creating a self-sustaining landscape that supports the end land use, cover systems are intended to reduce long-term risks to human and ecological receptors from the stored waste to acceptable levels. The performance and longevity of a cover system will be strongly influenced by the features or shapes of the WSF final landform. Hence, cover systems and landforms must be thought of as an integrated design. Based on the author’s experience, the most important elements of the design process for maximizing the potential of WSF final landforms / cover systems being sustainable over the long term are noted in this manuscript. Several key items that must be considered and addressed during the planning phase of constructing a WSF final landform are also described. Various methods for monitoring performance of a WSF final landform are also reviewed. Key aspects associated with decommissioning a tailings WSF and waste rock pile at the former Cluff Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan are included to illustrate many of the practical insights provided in this paper.

"In an earlier paper(1) the visits to several European mines using the bucket-wheel excavator (BWE) technology were described. It was during this trip that information was gathered on some interesting developments related to this type of mining, taking place elsewhere. It was learned that an across-the-pit system (XPS) comprised of a BWE and stacker has been operating successfully in a Hungarian mine for some time. Also the use of stackers with 225 m long booms and draglines with 125 m booms and 125m3 buckets in Soviet mines was indicated. Such equipment could be of great value to some Canadian strip mines, in particular the equipment proven useful in severe climatic conditions of U.S.S.R., similar to those of the Canadian prairies.To follow up on this information a field trip to Hungary and the U.S.S.R. was organized by the Department of Mineral Engineering, University of Alberta, to study the applications and performance of the systems in question. Visited were the Thorez mine near Visonta, Hungary, U.S.S.R. Ministry of Coal Mining and Skotchinski Institute in Moscow, Karagandashakhstoi Institute (designers of Ekibastuz mines in the Kazakh Republic) and Kostenko mine in Karaganda, Vostsibgiproshakht Institute (designers of Irsha Borodinski, Kharanovski, Moguntski and Tugnuski mines in Siberia) and the eastern Siberian Unit of the U.S.S.R. Coal Mining Ministry in Irkutsk as well as Azeiski mine located some 250 km northwest of Irkutsk. The findings of this field trip are presented."

"Heap leaching, currently being applied in the treatment of low-grade ores in the south western United States, is shown to have potential for use in north western Ontario. The history and operation of the process are described, and cost comparisons are given.IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering gold from low-grade ore. Although it is not currently being used in Canada on a production scale, it is being used extensively, and successfully, in the southwestern United States as well as elsewhere in the world. Especially suited for large deposits of very low -grade ore, it also appears to be practical for use on small, high-grade deposits because it avoids the high capital costs of mills. Eveleth (1980) and others suggest that the capital and operating costs required for heap leaching are approximately 20% and 40% respectively of conventional milling methods.Northwestern Ontario is noted for its large number of undeveloped, small, high-grade gold deposits. Although there are a number o f larger and higher-grade deposits in the area as well, it is the relatively small undeveloped deposits which would benefit most from heap leaching, if it could be demonstrated to be a viable extraction method.To assess the significance of these small deposits, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources recently commissioned a consultants' study of the gold reserves in certain parts of northwestern Ontario. This report, titled ""Feasibility of Small-Scale Gold Mining in Northwestern Ontario"", by J.N. Neilson and R.C.E. Bray (1981, OGS Open File Report 5332), documents 106 known gold deposits having sufficient information to calculate gold reserves. A total of over 7.8 million tons having a weighted average grade of 0.19 oz of gold per ton were compiled in the proven, probable and possible categories, with an additional 8.2 million tons in the speculative category. Many of these deposits could be mined by open-pit methods."

A Conjugate Anvil-Hammer Mill (CAHM) has the potential to replace conventional crushers and SAG mills, with their respective conveyors and stockpiles, in a SABC circuit. It may improve comminution circuit efficiency by 100%. CAHM compresses rock in a more efficient way, similar to 19th century stamp mills, which follows the fundamental research of Schönert (1990 & 1996). CAHM efficiency is being proven through the use of ROCKY (2011) Discrete Element Method (DEM). ROCKY features allow it to simulate realistic comminution. CAHM is customizable with many geometries that are rock-property specific. ROCKY?s wear modeling compliments the structural integrity of the design.

The effect of sulfuric acid concentration on the extractions of arsenic and copper in the catalyzed batch leaching of an enargite concentrate was studied. The acid concentrations studied were 60, 45, 30 and 15 g/L. The experimental series yields maximum copper extractions of 96 to 98% in an interval of 81 - 185 h leaching time for 60 - 15 g/L initial sulfuric acid concentration; all the copper extractions plateaued after these values; the rates and plateaus of copper extraction are increased with higher acid concentrations. Arsenic extractions reached maximum values of 89% in 57 hours, 57% in 49 hours, 33% in 25 hours, and 25% in 112 hours respectively; these maximum values were followed by a steep decrease in arsenic concentration, which indicates a precipitation event occurs in the process. According to the literature and process conditions, the arsenic precipitates obtained are iron arsenates similar to scorodite. The stability of the residues was tested using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) from EPA; the residues for the four concentration levels passed the TCLP test, reporting arsenic leaching values below 1 mg/L.

Summary During the last three years the discovery of gold in the belt of volcanic and sedimentary rocks extending eastward from the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake gold-fields has caused a great deal of excitement in mining circles. The area is heavily drift covered, and every aid to the location of veins is eagerly grasped. A knowledge of the physiographic history of the area is of the utmost importance in the application of many of these aids. Evidence is presented to show that glacial erosion has lowered the general elevation very little below the pre-glacial level, and that many glacial erratics have been carried less than three miles southward. Probably a knowledge of the general geology of a: region was never more necessary to the understanding of the distribution and continuation in depth of the mineral veins than in this area. Four distinct granites occur in the region, and gold-bearing veins are genetically associated with only one of these. Two types of quartz-feldspar porphyries have been found, only one of which has any bearing on the locus of the mineral veins. Many other examples of this complexity of associations might be cited, but everyone goes to show that in most cases the economic importance of the deposits can be realized only after the regional geology is understood. A series of sandstone, limestone and shale intruded by granite lies unconformably below the Keewatin lavas. The latter are intruded by a gneissoid granite and are overlain unconformably by the thick series of Timiskaming greywackes and silts. These are intruded by carbonated syenites and syenite porphyries which have since been rendered somewhat schistose.

Some of these, such as the need for responsible stewardship of natural resources, the requirement to respect laws and regulations, the need to provide for safe and healthy workplaces, and the need to provide appropriate returns to investors of capital , have been with the industry for a long time (fable I). But the industry now faces additional imperatives that are growing in number and in importance (fable 2):• There is the growing concern about the impact of operations, not only on the workplace environment and the external environment, but also on the need to monitor not only the chemical concentrations in various effluents but to also monitor the effects of such emissions on the environment; i.e. there is a growing concern about the ""net"" consequences of operations.• There is the need for on-going improvement in productivity and safety to compete and survive in a global economy. The global business environment has become paramount.• There is the imperative to failsafe all designs, equipment and operational procedures, and having done that to provide for containment of unavoidable spills, and to have ready and in place systems for emergency response.• There is the need, indeed the imperative, to involve all employees in various quality improvement programs.• There is the imperative to face up to ""virtual elimination/zero emissions""; and• One must have waste management plans in place to cope with the need to reduce, reuse, and recycle; and• There is the need for decommissioning plans for all operations, for the restoration of business habitats to their original states (or better). Indeed, one must engage in the decommissioning exercise from day one, i.e. right from the time of design and commissioning."

Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.
