Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

"Time-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a wellknown phenomenon. In shales and mudstones with a higher salt concentration in the pore fluid than the ambient fluid, the outward gradient generates an osmotic pressure which acts as the driving force for swelling. The swelling phenomenon appears to be related to ion exchange between the rock porewater and the surrounding water.The swelling potential is expressed as the percent swelling strain that occurs per log cycle of time, in either the vertical (perpendicular to bedding) or horizontal (parallel to bedding) directions. In addition, the swelling potential is also noted to be stress dependent. In practice, therefore, the conditions required for swelling are (i) the accessibility to water, and (ii) an outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid. The relief of in-situ rock stress during excavation serves an initiating mechanism (Lo and Micic, 2010).INTRODUCTIONTime-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a well-known phenomenon. An industry survey has been conducted by the Queen's University Mining Engineering Department of 30 Canadian mining organizations to determine how effectively newly graduated mining engineers meet the needs of the industry. The principal objectives of the survey were to evaluate, and thus provide focus on change for, curricula being taught at Canadian mining engineering schools in service of the industry's needs; to provide feedback on current industry expectations; and to reinforce contacts with the industry as a means of providing future collaboration. A strong focus of the survey was placed upon industry's perception of the special attributes of engineering hires and applicability of student academic training to meet their industrial requirements. In providing this detailed summary of corporate responses, a clearer understanding of the mining industry's expectations of engineering training at Canadian colleges and universities has been gained.

Knowing shear mechanism of discontinuities under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions is a key factor in stability analysis of rock slopes and rock foundations. In this paper, the effect of cyclic loads on the shear mechanism of joint asperities is described. For this purpose, a fresh tension-split joint from a granite block was used as a reference and thirty five mortar replicas were fabricated. Cyclic shear tests were conducted on replicas under low values of constant normal load (CNL) using a servo-controlled loading system. Tests were performed in two consecutive steps; load-controlled and then displacementcontrolled. In the load controlled part, after initial increase of shear stress to 0.25 MPa, the test was stopped for 2 minutes, then increased to 0.5 MPa, and finally decreased to 0.25 MPa. This process was repeated ten times. At the end, the test was continued up to 10 mm shear displacement under displacement-controlled loading in order to pass the peak shear strength and reach the residual strength. Characterizing joint surface and modeling of involved asperities during the tests was undertaken using a Matlab code developed with new mathematical expressions. The algorithm used in the code is based on three-dimensional coordinates of the scanned joints’ surfaces before and after the test. It was found that a high percentage of degradation happens during the first cycle of loading and during the other cycles, degradation occurs gradually. While comparing tests conducted in monotonic and cyclic loading conditions, it was observed that under low number of cycles, the pronounced mechanism is consolidation of the joint surfaces. This consolidation increases contact areas and, therefore, shear strength parameters.

Ground source heat pumps are used to heat or cool building and heat water supply. Such heat pumps use the earth as a heat source or sink to efficiently provide or store thermal energy. For example, a ground source heat pump typically requires less then a third of the electric or fossil fuel energy of a conventional heater. Ground source heat pumps could therefore help reduce the energy consumption of active mines where low-grade geothermal resources are abundant. In most heat pumps, water or a water-antifreeze mixture having a temperature ranging from -6.5 to 43.5 °C is circulated through a heat exchanger at a rate of 0.000033 to 0.000067 m3/s (2 to 4 L/min) for each kilowatt of heating/cooling capacity. The groundwater that is continuously pumped to drain mines could be used to operate heat pumps. Water feeding a heat pump can alternatively circulate in a close loop network of pipes buried underground or installed in a surface water body. Retention water ponds, tailings and waste dumps commonly found at active mine sites could provide excellent environments to install the close loop system. Further research will help take advantage of the unexploited geothermal resources associated with actives mines.

"Neill and Gunter Limited (NGL) has prepared a preliminary design and a cost estimate for a ferric chloride leach plant to recover copper, lead, zinc, and silver from a typical complex sulphide ore. This plant design is specifically intended to treat unconcentrated ground ore (flotation feed), but can be readily adapted to treat bulk concentrates. Samples of ground ore and bulk concentrate were obtained from Heath Steele Mines, Miramichi, New Brunswick, laboratory testing, and preliminary process flow sheet preparation was carried out by the Research and Productivity Council in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Approximately thirty drawings have been produced, including process and equipment flowsheets, process piping and instrumentation drawings, and preliminary general arrangements. Preliminary capital and operating cost estimates were prepared for a plant that would treat 1000 t/d of crushed and ground ore to produce about 30 000 tpy of zinc. Capital and operating cost estimates were also projected for plants up to 4000 t/d of processed ore. Recoveries of 99% for zinc, 98% for lead, and 96% for copper were achieved in laboratory tests on unconcentrated ore. These recoveries were higher than the overall recoveries obtained from bulk concentrate, yielding approximately 10% more revenue.A 1000 tonne per day plant was determined to have a low return on investment, however, depending on the size and type of mining operations employed and the FCL plant throughput. DCF-ROI projections of 20% to over 30% were calculated for 100% equity financed “green field” mine, mill and FCL plant operations of 2000 t/d and higher"

The integration of mining and mineral processing technologies into new advanced mining systems is considered to offer several benefits, including selective mining, reduction in waste, increased productivity, flexibility, and improved resource utilization. This paper focuses on underground hardrock mining and the integration of pre-concentration technologies into future mining systems as representing realistic, shorter-term integration options. Control of fragmentation to optimize grinding, pre-concentration of ores, in situ leaching, and modular mining/mineral processing systems are possible with existing technology. Current research is directed toward development of integrated underground systems that minimize surface activity and minimize or eliminate surface waste disposal. Results from a simulation model of an integrated underground pre-concentration system are presented.

"Increasing labour costs, the trend to larger mills, the processing of lower grade ores and a diminishing sup-ply of well-trained and experienced mill operators contribute to the necessity of automating a grinding circuit. With sophisticated process control techniques, supervision of the mill line is reduced to an occasional inspection by the shift supervisor. Process operating decisions and/or adjustments are quickly and accurately performed by the electronic devices to be described. When the variables in the grinding circuit are stabilized using the sensors and controllers as discussed, the over-all grinding circuit is maintained at its optimum grinding load level, with ample protection against under-and overloading."

Uranium mines in Washington State include the producing Midnite and Sherwood mines and several mined-out deposits, the most productive of which was the Daybreak mine. The Midnite mine is generally classified as a hydrothermal deposit consisting of tabular orebodies in Precambrian pelitic and calcareous metasedimentary host rocks. The host rocks occur as roof pendants in a Cretaceous porphyritic quartz monzonite intrusive; the quartz monzonite averages 12 ppm U308 The uranium deposit appears to have undergone a complex genesis, involving a series of depositional and enrichment stages. The Sherwood uranium deposit, approximately 4 miles south of the Midnite mine, occurs near the bottom of a basal Late Cretaceous to Paleocene arkosic conglomerate. The conglomerate lies nonconformably on the porphyritic quartz monzonite that is associated with the Midnite deposit. The Sherwood and Midnite uranium deposits may have had a similar genetic history linked by a common uraniferous pluton source, ground-water action, and/or leaching of uranium-rich ash flows from now-eroded, overlying, Eocene volcanics. The Daybreak deposit, in northeastern Spokane County, consists entirely of secondary uranium mineralization (metaautunite) in a quartz monzonite pluton. Mineralization is confined to a low-angle fault zone and is most highly concentrated at the intersection of primary and secondary shears. Both hydrothermal and ground-water origins are feasible. Besides the Midnite-Sherwood area, 14 other areas in the western Okanogan Highlands physiographic province and Cascades region have favourable characteristics for uranium potential. Criteria include the existence of uranium occurrences, Tertiary basin sediments with intercalated volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, favourable geochemical data, alkaline plutons associated with uranium occurrences or borders of Tertiary basins, and structural controls.

Purpose of Paper Geophysics is a highly developed science which has found a wide use in industry. Perhaps the most spectacular application has been in the field of oil exploration. It has been estimated that, up to the end of 1939, geophysics was responsible for the discovery of five billion barrels of oil. In 1944, the sum o $40,000,000 was expended for geophysical work in the search for new oil deposits. Although the metal mining industry has so far made comparatively little use of the science, it is becoming increasingly common for the exploration engineer or geologist to be required to co-operate with the geophysicist. Many papers dealing with applied geophysics have been published but in most of them advanced training in physics and mathematics on the part of the reader has been assumed. It is difficult for the average engineer to obtain a ready understanding of the equipment, field procedure, and scope and limitations of the science from the literature. The present paper attempts to describe briefly and in simple terms the principles underlying magnetic, self-potential, and electrical resistivity methods and their application to a field problem. Introduction Geophysics is concerned with the study of gravity, magnetism, natural earth currents, earthquakes, vulcanism, and many other natural phenomena. The methods, originally devised for the measurement, for scientific purposes, of the forces associated with such phenomena have been adapted to the search for buried deposits of economic value. If the body sought has large dimensions and distinctive physical properties, geophysical measurements may reveal associated, and in some cases quite characteristic, anomalous features. However, in many instances the mass cannot be indicated directly but has a common association with geological features which can be defined by physical measurements. Although such surveys cannot specifically identify oil, metalliferous minerals, or other commercially valuable substances, it is possible to delineate anomalous sub-surface physical features which, with the help of geological information, can be assessed as possible or probable indications of the body or structure sought. The nature and extent of the material causing an anomaly, and its economic importance, can only be determined by further exploration, such as drilling.

The solutions to unsteady-state gas flow in a radial system have been reviewed in order to aid in the interpretation of drawdown data. It has been the practice to evaluate the time and rate conversion constants, directly or indirectly, by using reservoir data. This paper presents a method of determining these constants from drawdown data. A simplified approach to the de-termination for the various boundary conditions is presented. An example of a problem which illustrates the use of this theory appears in the appendix. "Acid resistant brick lined autoclaves and related vessels are utilized in pressure oxidation for the recovery of gold, copper, and other metals. The combination of the corrosion resistant membrane, acid resistant brick, mortar and steel shell is a composite system that requires a sophisticated stress analysis. In order to obtain meaningful results both the model and physical properties of the materials must be carefully selected. Evaluation of the calculated results requires an understanding of both the failure mechanisms of ceramics and experience with the performance of existing lining systems.INTRODUCTIONAcid brick lining systems are used in pressure oxidation autoclaves and related vessels to provide thermal and mechanical protection for corrosion resistant membranes that are applied directly to the interior of the vessel shell. The acid brick and mortar must be resistant to the process conditions and must provide a mechanically reliable structure.The construction of lined vessels incorporates a wide range of materials that can include the carbon steel vessel, austenitic weld overlay, lead lining, organic membrane, ceramic brick, mortars and other alloy components. The physical properties of the materials can vary by orders of magnitude and when combined in the construction of the lined vessel create a complex composite structure. The materials may be bonded together or act independently of each other. Stresses are induced into the lined vessel include pressure, thermal expansion, chemical expansion and mechanical loads.The complexity of these systems makes it is very difficult to account for all of the variables in the structural analysis of lined vessels. Historically calculations were simplified and designers primarily relied on experience with previous applications.The greatly improved tools for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) available today allow for detailed calculation of the stresses imposed on the vessel shell and lining. Koning & Lauzon (2004) presented a paper on design fundamentals including a discussion on the application of FEA methods at Pressure Hydrometallurgy 2004 in Banff. When a designer carefully constructs a model and selects the correct materials properties for the calculations, meaningful and useful results can be achieved."

Corrosion is a major operational problem in amine-treating plants causing significant expenditures each year, Corrosion may become more severe when the amine plants contain process contaminants ? namely heat-stable salts. The heat-stable salts enter the plants with feed-gas streams and makeup-solution, and/or are produced within the plants by reactions of alkanolamine and available carboxylic-acid anions, This work investigated interaction corrosion effects that may exist in amine-treating plants containing a mixture of heat-stable salts, The investigation was experimentally carried out in a 5 kmol/m3 monoethanolamine (MEA) solution containing 0,20 mol/mol carbon dioxide (CO2) loading at 80°C under atmospheric pressure using carbon steel 1018, Six heat-stable salts, including formate, oxalate, bicine, acetate, thiosulfate and chloride, were tested with a series of salt combinations, Potentiodynamic Polarization, Tafel Extrapolation, and Cyclic Polarization were used for revealing corrosion behavior, determining corrosion rate, and examining the pitting tendency, respectively, Results show that thiosulfate induces the most corrosive environment when present either individually or in the form of salt mixtures.

Determination of P-wave velocity (Vp), which is closely related to intact rock, is a nondestructive, easy and less complicated procedure. Due to these advantages, there is an increasing trend to predict the geomechanical properties of rocks from Vp. In addition to mineral content, cementing material and porosity, degree of saturation (Sr) are also other factors influencing geomechanical properties of the intact rock. However, up to the present, in the studies on the prediction of geomechanical properties of rocks from Vp, the effect of Sr has not been investigated. By considering this issue, in this study, it was aimed to correlate strength properties (uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths) and Young’s modulus with Vp of various rock types under different degrees of saturation. In addition, geomechanical properties of rocks were estimated from theoretical P- and S-wave (Vs) velocities, which were calculated based on their mineralogical compositions. For this purpose, fourteen different rock types were collected from several parts of Turkey and a comprehensive laboratory testing program was conducted. In the statistical analyzes, a series of different prediction relationships were developed by using independent variables such as Vp, Sr and effective clay content (ECC). Simple regression analysis results indicated that although prediction of the geomechanical properties of rocks from Vp at different degrees of saturation was possible, the equations developed would yield some under- or over-predictions. On the other hand, the multivariate equations developed have very high prediction performances and are very useful tools to estimate the geomechanical properties from the measured Vp at any Sr value. In addition to mineralogy, the variation in geomechanical properties with increasing Sr is also associated with the combined effect of porosity and clay content, which is first described in this study by the term Effective Clay Content (ECC). It is also noted that strength properties of rocks at any Sr may also be estimated using the empirical relations based on the theoretical Vp and shear-wave velocity (Vs) values, which are calculated from their mineralogical compositions.

THE Flin Flon concentrating and metallurgical plants (Figure 1) of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, lie adjacent to the town of Flin Flon, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, 400 miles northwest of Winnipeg. Since the start of milling operations in 1930, over 50 million tons of ore from the Flin Flon mine have been treated in the concentrator. During the past few years, newly discovered orebodies have been brought into production and their ores processed at the company's main metallurgical plants. All these properties are within a 75-mile radius of Flin Flon and have aided substantially in augmenting plant metal production as well as retarding depletion of ore reserves in the Flin Flon mine. •Current satellite producers are the Schist Lake, Coronation, and Chisel Lake mines. The Schist Lake mine, located 3 ½ miles southeast of the main plant, is a copper-zinc producer. It was brought into production in 1954. The

"The Cinola gold deposit in the northern Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, is in a clastic sequence consisting of a lower shale of the Late Cretaceous Haida Formation and an overlying interbedded sequence of pebble conglomerate and coarse-grained sandstone of the Middle Miocene Skonun Formation. Both formations are intruded by a stock and dykes of porphyritic rhyolite. Two K-Ar model ages indicate mineralization and probably porphyritic-rhyolite intrusion at about 14 Ma (middle Miocene). A splay of the Sandspit fault system constitutes the footwall on the west of the deposit.The Cinola deposit can be classed as Carlin-type based on features such as (1) small particle size for gold, (2) Tertiary age of mineralization, (3) element abundances (e.g. high Hg), (4) dominantly argillic alteration, (5) a structural setting associated with major faults, (6) porosity of the host rock and (7) spatial and possibly genetic association with felsic intrusions. Gold is widespread and occurs mainly as grains of< 0.5 11-m in silicified sedimentary rock, and in quartz veins. Locally, coarse > 100 11-m particles of native gold occur in quartz veins, especially in strongly brecciated porphyritic-rhyolite. Ore minerals are mainly pyrite and marcasite, but include small amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, cinnabar, tiemannite (HgSe), rutile, magnetite, hematite and limonite in addition to native gold and electrum. No silver minerals have been found; silver was found in gold particles in amounts varying from 6.2 to 24.2 weight per cent. Alteration products are sericite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite, with abundant quartz of several stages.The host rocks, specifically the Skonun Formation, formed as an alluvial plain facies in a braided river system discharging into a marine basin in early Middle Miocene time. During the Middle Miocene, this sequence was intruded by a rhyolitic stock. The highly porous and permeable Miocene clastic sequence apparently provided an optimum setting for the development of a large geothermal system, the energy for which probably derived from the rhyolite stock. Mineral deposition followed a well-defined paragenesis, which, from oldest to youngest, is: (1) precipitation of iron sulphide minerals, and early quartz; (2) several stqges of quartz veins, with deposition of sphalerite succeeded by galena, chalcopyrite and visible gold. Micron-size gold was precipitated throughout these two stages of mineral deposition. Argillitization of the host rocks probably in part coincided with the mineralization and continued during cooling of the geothermal cell.In-situ reserves have been estimated at 41.1 million metric tons averaging 1.85 g Au/tonne using a cutoff grade of0.86 g Au/ tonne."

This paper discusses the lubrication of surface and underground mining machinery and equipment from the standpoint of machine components. The machine components considered are bearings, cylinders, gears, chains, couplings, fluid drives, hydraulic systems, screws and wire ropes. The best selection of lubricants for these machine components, and for sub-divisions of the components, are outlined. They form general recommendations, for average operating conditions in both surface and under-ground mining operations. The American Petroleum Institute&apos;s service classification of both engine crankcase oils and gear oils is de-scribed and used in recommending products for these applications. The practical aspect of lubrication is kept foremost in the recommendations, which are designed to meet the requirements of a wide variety of equipment with the minimum number of lubricants. THE lubrication of mining machinery and equipment presents a variety of problems peculiar to the industry. The type of mine, the ambient temperature, water, dust, and operating and maintenance practices, as well as the age and condition of the equipment, are variables which have to be considered in making lubricant recommendations.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. A GREAT deal of work has been done at Britannia during the past three years in improving and standardizing rounds for development headings, and the results obtained have been very gratifying. The round which has recently been adopted as a standard for all drifts and cross-cuts has, in some instances, doubled the average length of break formerly obtained. It has also increased the footage of advance per labour shift and reduced explosives&apos; consumption. At the present time, with a shortage of skilled labour, more control is necessar7 in directing the drilling of rounds. The use of a standard round has been o great assistance to the foremen and shiftbosses. NATURE OF GROUND Most of the ground encountered consists of a moderately silicified chlorite schist, known locally as G.M.S (green-mottled schist). It cannot be termed hard ground, because a three and one-half inch Leyner will drill at an average rate of twelve inches per minute. Due to the abrasive nature of the ground, the gauge of the steel wears rapidly and in most cases one set of steel is needed for each hole. The ground is not &apos;free breaking and holes must be spaced correctly to obtain a maximum break. DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARD ROUND FOR THREE-SHIFT OPERATION Late in 1940, a development programme was started involving 7,000 feet of drifting, 6 ft. By 7 1/2 ft. In cross-section, in two headings. Plans were drawn up to advance the headings on three shifts. Equipment used in the headings was as follows: D.A.35 Leyner?machines, Eimco Model 12B mucking machines, nine one-ton end-dump cars, one Mancha Little Trammer on the longest heading, 20-pound rail, 4-in. 15 compressed-air line, 15-in. Fan pipe connected to 5 h. P. Coppus fan. Diamond-drill cross-cuts, 16 feet in length, were cut every 250 feet. Switches were installed at these cross-cuts and they served as passing points for the cars. One siding seventy feet in length was cut in each heading at approximately the half-way point. The cycle of operations planned was to muck out, drill, and blast each shift. Previous performance in this type of ground indicated that a daily advance of 12 feet to 14 feet might be made. However, if a better type of round could be developed, an increased daily advance would be possible. A study of the time available for each operation in a net working shift of six and one-half hours indicated that the maximum depth of round that could be mucked, drilled, and blasted each shift would be six and one-half feet. When this maximum depth was decided upon, the next problem was to develop a satisfactory round.
