"THE most recent estimate of minteable coal reserves in Saskatchewan was made by the Federal Royal Commission on Coal (1944- 6). Saskatchewan was then estimated to have some 24 per cent of the Canadian reserves and two-thirds of this is located in what is called the Souris-Estevan area, which lies in the southeast corner of the Province and border's on the International boundary. It is also estimated that there are some 61/2 million thousand-tons in this area of lignite coal which grades 8,000 B.t.u. or less and has a moisture content ranging from 30 to 33 per cent. Ownership of coal rights in the Province is widely dispersed between the Crown, individuals, and corporations, and a recent survey disclosed that 40 percent of ownership was vested in the Crown and 60 per cent in private individuals and corporations. Coal rights on Crown lands may be leased at an annual rental of $ 1.00 an acre. Under such leases, a royalty of 5 cents a ton is levied on all coal mined. A royalty of 7 cents a ton is levied on coal produced from lands where mineral rights were purchased from the Federal Government prior to the transfer of jurisdiction over natural resources to the Province, in 1931. An annual mineral tax of 50 cents per acre has also been imposed by the Provincial Government on all coals within a defined producing areas."

"AbstractSatisfactory mine drilling operations depend on the good performance of the drilling machine, and of what may be called the drill set, i.e., the following four elements: bit, attachment, drill rod, and shank end. The field performances of these four elements in the drill set are analysed and their service lives are compared. The most .common causes of service failure are reviewed and possibilities of increasing service life are discussed.The laboratory methods now employed for the simulated service testing of tungsten carbide bits, conical push-on and threaded .types of attachments, drill rods, and shank ends are described, and some results are discussed. The objectives of the research programme now being carried out •on the above mentioned elements are outlined.A number of mines in British Columbia, northern Ontario, and northern Quebec have been visited, and, with the co-operation of the C.I.M. Branches in these areas, meetings with representatives of the mining and steel industries concerned have been held. "History of Tara Mines Ltd.Tara Exploration and Development Company Ltd. was formed in Canada by Irishmen in 1953. The discovery of an orebody approximately six miles from the historically famous Hill of Tara in County Meath was a wild dream . Nevertheless this dream became a reality. Tara Mines Ltd. was formed, and the mine developed some 35 miles northwest of the City of Dublin in the Irish Republic.Tara's original drilling program indicated a zinc-lead orebody of approximately 60 million tonnes grading at 10.1% Zn and 2.6% Pb. The terms of the mining lease stipulated that the Irish government would acquire 25% equity interest in the operation. The mine was thus owned 75% by Tara Exploration and Development Company Ltd. of which the principal shareholders were Noranda and Northgate, together with 25% being held by the Irish government. The mine was purchased in March 1986 by Outokumpu Oy, a Finnish mining and metallurgical company, and together with the 25% government stake are the current owners. Outokumpu Analysis on Tara Mines Ltd.Upon ownership Outokumpu carried out a comprehensive analysis on the operation and came to the following conclusions :1. Tara had a good orebody;2. Tara had a skilled, capable, stable workforce;3. Tara's concentrator and processing equipment was adequate to meet requirements;4. Tara's mobile equipment fleet was too old and too numerousin numbers; and5. Tara had too many employees, both staff and hourly paid .With ore reserves of approximately 50 million tonnes and at a planned extraction rate of 2.6 million tonnes it meant that the mine had a lifespan of approximately 20 years. To be a viable operation into the future, the mine had to become more efficient. Operating costs and manpower levels had to be dramatically reduced."

"The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than approximately 45 degrees.As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result in less rock fall capacity.The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented."

NEW sources of supply of tungsten concentrates became necessary when the flow from the Far East was blocked in 1942. In Canada, one source has been noted in the workings of the Hollinger mine at Timmins, Ontario. For many years, a small amount of scheelite had been removed with the gold ore, and an appreciable tonnage of scheelite still remained in the mine. At the request of the Dominion Government, a plant was built to recover this scheelite in the form of a concentrate that could be used by the alloy-steel industry without further preparation. The plant began operating early in March, 1942, and a small tonnage of ore, carrying scheelite and gold values, has been treated daily since then. The possibility of recovering the scheelite had been considered on several previous occasions. Each time the proposal had been given up because the total profits from the enterprise were estimated to be insufficient to repay the capital cost of building the recovery plant. At the time the plant was built, additional information had been gathered about the tonnage and grade of the scheelite ore in the mine, and several thousand tons of ore grading higher than 0. 25 per cent WO3 (tungstic trioxide) were known to be available.

Abstract The production of metallic calcium, by reduction of lime with aluminium, was investigated. Using a modified form of the effusion method, the vapour pressure of calcium above the reaction: 4CaO + 2Al ~ 3Ca + CaO.AI203 was determined and found to vary from 1.0 to 1.3 mm. Hg from 1,150° to l,200°C. From the magnitudes of the various thermodynamic quantities involved, together with a consideration of the known chemical characteristics of the reaction, it was suggested that the reaction proceeded by reduction of lime with aluminium vapour. INTRODUCTION The conventional production of metals by reduction of their ores by carbon (or carbon monoxide) may be represented by the equilibrium: MO+ R [] RO+ M . . . . . . . . . .(1) where MO represents the metal oxide, and R the reducing agent (carbon or carbon monoxide). The free energy change ?F° associated with the reaction is given by -?F° = RTlnKp . . . . . . . . ... . (2) where R is the gas constant, T the absolute temperature, and KP the equilibrium constant. It should be noted that ?F° represents ? the standard free energy gained by the system and hence -?F° is the free energy gained by the surroundings - and that as ?F° increases K must decrease, and conversely. For metals above manganese in the electromotive series, the ?F° associated with reaction would quantity and from it can be seen that this corresponds to a small fraction for K. The equilibrium pressure of the oxide of carbon represented by RO is then too near its concentration in the furnace gases for the reaction to proceed in an internally fired furnace. For the practical reduction of such metals, fuel fired furnaces are inadequate. Electric furnaces may be used to give higher temperatures with lower concentration of carbon oxides and the reaction may still proceed. However, for many metals such as calcium and aluminium the formation of stable carbides or acetylides may prevent production of the metal by this reaction. In this case, either electrolytic methods must be used, orrecourse must be had to reducing agents other than carbon. It is the latter method which is under consideration here.

In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered. It was only about ten years ago that the use of large amounts of pure oxygen in a steelmaking

"PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. "It is a widely held view that in the 21st century, the mining industry will be dominated by a relatively small number of large companies, truly global in scope and internationally staffed (Gooding, 1997). Interestingly enough, most of the exploration and exploitation activities are being carried out by junior and major mining companies from common law jurisdictions in civil law countries, in particular in Latin America, where in recent years, the region has ranked first as a destination for exploration dollars, thanks to the reforms undertaken by some countries to amend their legal framework to attract foreign investment. From a lawyer’s point of view, this is where the main challenge lies: how to bridge the gap between the two legal systems.In order to avoid pitfalls, common law lawyers should be more diligent and proactive when dealing with civil law jurisdictions, given the different systems of law, standards, traditions and customs. Common law lawyers cannot be expected to be well-versed in civil law but they should not be completely unfamiliar with it either. A balance should be struck to ensure clients’ needs are professionally taken care of and that common law requirements and standards are met."

A mineral processing facility near Montreal, CEZinc, Noranda Inc., has recently implemented a leading-edge intranet solution for monitoring the performance of plant operations, and providing condition-based maintenance. This innovative multi-faceted software implementation incorporates: web-delivered plant information systems; area-wide control loop performance assessment (using sophisticated algorithms to evaluate poorly performing controllers); and integrated alarm management functions.The system has enabled a project to improve plant operations through better process control. Maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers all can see the performance of the controllers, and the performance of the plant itself, through webdelivered graphics and reports. Information is combined from many sources, real-time, historical, relational and analytical, to provide a complete picture of plant operation.The web-based solution centralizes the administration of user access, and simplifies the deployment of several different kinds of information to many desktops. It is an extensible system that allows users to create and share their own web pages and data views.The paper will discuss the solution architecture and the improvements the IT, operations, maintenance, and engineering groups have experienced, and overall benefits to the facility.

"Vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite ironsand deposits occur along a 480 km stretch of the west coast of New Zealand. In the present study, the leaching behaviour of NZ ironsand was investigated in hydrochloric acid (2–10 M) solution at 50–80°C for 2 h. The resulting leaching liquors exhibited Fe/V ratios in the range 150–180. The distribution of trace element contaminants between solution and solid residue was investigated, and processing conditions have been determined for rapid and efficient dissolution of Fe, Ti and V into the leaching solution. In addition, mineralogical analysis of raw ironsand and leached residues was performed in order to study the leaching mechanism. Samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP). Results indicate that the dominant dissolution process follows shrinking particle mechanism. However, ironsand particles containing ex-solution lamellae exhibited a different leaching behaviour compared to homogenous titanomagnetite particles.INTRODUCTION Titanomagnetite ironsand (blacksand) forms Quaternary onshore beach and dune deposits and offshore marine deposits (Figure 1) along 480 km of coastline from Kaipara Harbour south to Wanganui on the west coast of the North Island (Christie, 2016). It attracted the attention of scientists from the earliest times (Galbreath, 1998). The principal minerals in ironsand are titanomagnetite (TTM), ilmenite, quartz and ferromagnesian minerals such as augite, hornblende, diopside, and olivine with smaller amounts of rutile and apatite (Mauk, 2016).Several large ironsand deposits have been discovered and exploited since the late 1960’s. The Waikato North Head and Taharoa mines are currently operating and they have a 2015 measured resource of 400 million tonnes in total and provide over 2 million tonnes of concentrate per year by simple cost effective magnetic separation process (Christie, 2016; Christie & Brathwaite, 1997). The concentrate contains not only 7–8% TiO2 and 56–60% SFe, but also 0.3–0.6% V2O5, is both a valuable titanium mineral and a source of vanadium. All the production is used for steelmaking industries. The other potential for utilizing more of this resource without requirement of integration into an iron and steel producing plant is to develop a hydrometallurgical route with advantages of higher efficiency along with lower emissions. Currently, there is no existing commercial process capable of extracting all three of these elements as industrial-grade commodity products. Acid leaching of TTM concentrate with higher degrees of recovery and selectivity is a key step in any possible hydrometallurgical route."

The critical problems in commercialization of the present solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and useful electrical and physical properties of IT-SOFCs electrolytes are discussed briefly. The conductivity behavior of the perovskite-type and perovskite-related structure metal oxides are summarized. Perovskite-type La0.9Sr0.10ao.8Mgo.203_8 (LSGM) exhibits high ionic conductivity of 0.1 S/cm at 800 °C. In order to improve the electrical conductivity of LSGM and the In analogue of LSGM, substitutions have been made at the A-and B-sites. Substitution of trivalent La3+ by isovalent Pr3+ in LSGM and La09Sro ilno.sMgo.202.85 (LSIM), yield new mixed conductors. Among the investigated compounds in the present study, La0APro.4Sro.21no sMgo.2028 exhibits the highest total electrical conductivity of 3.2 x 10-5 S/cm at 200 °C in air with the lowest activation energy of 0.44 eV (200-700 °C). LSIM and Pr-substituted LSGM and LSIM perovskites show p-type electronic conductivity in the oxygen partial pressure range 10-5 ? 0.21 atm at 750 °C. The perovskite-type solid solution SrSn1-xFex03 exhibits compositionally driven phase transitions. For example, compound of the composition x = 0 to 0.3 crystallizes in an orthorhombic GdFeO3-like perovskite structure, where as that of x = 0.4-0.9 crystallizes in simple cubic SrTiO3-like, and that of x = 1 in orthorhombic structure. The electrical conductivity of SrSn1_xFex03 increases with the increasing Fe content and reaches a value of about 10-1 S/cm at 25 °C in air for x = 1. Compounds with low Fe content exhibit both ionic and electronic conductivity, while the higher Fe content 0.5) perovskites are electronic conductors over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure of 10-22? 0.21 atm at 750 °C.

Podsol soil horizons developed on Pleistocene glacial sediments overlying the Coronation Mine orebody were analyzed for copper and zinc spectro-photometrically, using biquinoline-isoamyl alcohol and dithizone carbon tetrachloride reagents. Copper and zinc are concentrated in the A. and C horizons, whereas the A1, A2 and B horizons are leached. Of economic significance is the fact that the C horizon contains a copper anomaly, in excess of 100 times back-ground, directly over the orebody. Due to the erratic distribution of high copper concentrations in the Ao horizon with respect to the orebody, that horizon is not considered as a reliable prospecting datum. U NDER certain conditions, metallic ore deposits are accompanied by primary halos of trace elements in unweathered rock surrounding the orebodies or by secondary halos in weathered rock, alluvium, soil, or vegetation above or near the mineralized zones. Where such halos occur, chemical analysis, as applied to the detection of trace elements, is a valuable prospecting aid, permitting the detection of mineralization of possible economic value.

The present work reports a study of production of thorium concentrate from Egyptian monazite by decomposition of ammonium carbonate solutions containing ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes. These solutions were obtained from the processing of monazite by alkaline leaching in ball-mill autoclaves, followed by selective separation of thorium and uranium from lanthanides by autoclave leaching of the hydroxide cake obtained with ammonium carbonate - bicarbonate solutions. The separation of thorium and uranium in the form of thorium concentrate from their carbonate complexes was achieved by different methods, including neutralization of solutions at pH = 6.7 by acid, addition of alkali at pH = 11.5, heating of solution at 100°C and processing of carbonate solution with steam under pressure in steel autoclaves. Processing of solutions of thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes in an autoclave with steam causes their decomposition. Complete recovery of thorium 99.8% and 98.4% uranium recovery in thorium concentrate was attained at 120°C and steam pressure 2 atm, within 10 min. Meanwhile, the recovery of lanthanides was low and did not exceed 1.1%. The thorium concentrate produced contains 67.82% Th, 4.6% U and 3.14% REE. All methods achieve complete separation of thorium and uranium from their carbonate solutions, but the first two methods are unfavourable for the industry due to the high cost of reagents and their inability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes with steam under pressure is recommended for industrial application for its simplicity and the ability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate.

The introduction of the National Instrument (?NI?) 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects has led to some very specific requirements to reporting a Mineral Resource estimate for mineral projects to the public. There are elements of the Mineral Resource estimate that are based on the qualified person (?QP?) completing the work to accepted industry practices and applying their relevant experience. There is no document that defines what is considered the accepted industry practices. There are guidelines provided by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (?CIM?) but, in general, the industry practices are dynamic and often different QPs will estimate the same mineral project in different ways. This sometime happens on exploration projects as they proceed from one study to the next. The focus of this paper is to provide a review of some of the current practices that are published in Technical Reports (Preliminary Assessment to Feasibility studies) with respect to classifying a Mineral Resource as Inferred, Indicated and Measured and the grade interpolation and modeling methods, data support (i.e. geological drill hole spacing) and validation methods employed.

As part of an initiative to improve value in mining, CEMI is developing a handbook on best practice in mine design. Various formats were examined, and of these, the wiki was selected as being most suitable. Being web-based, its global reach and capability of being continuously updated allows the wiki to evolve as new knowledge is generated, and to capture the diversity of experience of practitioners in the mining industry. While wikis have many advantages in terms of organizing content and searching, their ability to be edited by users is often seen as a negative characteristic for quality control. To ensure reliability of information content, author attribution, specific authorship models, and a peer review process have been implemented, in addition to the standard version tracking capability of wikis. The first phase of the project concentrates on topics related to underground hard rock mine design. The scope will be expanded to cover other aspects of mining as the project matures. Strategic partnerships with various organizations, such as the CIM, and CANMET, are being formed to provide a wide range of seed material to stimulate growth of the site. www.minedesignwiki.org

Ghana currently exports its bauxite raw without any value addition. Gradual depletion of high grade bauxite (with high alumina content) and the emergence of low grade bauxite (with high iron oxide content) calls for novel and inexpensive ways to recover alumina from these low grade ores. Bauxite users have indicated their willingness to pay 10% to 50% higher for a corresponding reduction in impurities by a similar amount. This project therefore investigates the carbothermal upgrading of the Ghana Awaso bauxite using waste polypropylene as reductant in a locally designed gas-fired furnace. Composite pellets of low grade bauxite sample (assaying 45% Al2O3) containing pulverised waste polypropylene were formed, oven dried, placed in fireclay crucible and fired for 30 minutes. The magnetic fraction after reduction was separated by a Low Intensity Magnet and weighed. It was observed that up to 97% of the iron oxides (occurring as hematite and goethite) could be separated into the magnetic fraction as magnetite leaving a nonmagnetic fraction with over 98% Al2O3 as opposed to the 45% Al2O3 in the as-received bauxite sample. This research direction provides yet another simple but effective way for simultaneously upgrading low grade bauxite and recycling waste polypropylene, whilst at the same time decreasing the amount of waste material generated as red mud after the Bayer process.

The recent trend in underground mine developments is “bigger is better.” This is most certainly evident in the mine shaft and conveyances that operate within its compartments. Today, there are several new installations requiring mine cages that can transport up to 170 passengers. The technology in mine hoisting is advancing to address a combination of higher capacity requirements, deeper hoisting depths and faster winding rates, however, some areas of the hoist plant have not changed in the past 50 years. The most notable of these areas is the shaft compartment guide string and the conveyance mounted safety arrest mechanism. The technology in use today for the protection of passengers in a shaft conveyance from a hoist rope severance incident remains conceptually unchanged from Elisha Otis’ design of 1850. The actual retardation components, the safety dogs, have taken on several forms since Elisha’s invention with the last major design change occurring in the late 1940s. The arrest of a free falling shaft conveyance requires that the shaft guides withstand the energy imparted on them by the safety dogs. There are some very real limitations presented by the use of wood for this application. The new hoisting era will most certainly continue to demand larger capacity equipment, but also an increased awareness toward safety

Introduction Situated in the district of South Lorrain, some 16 miles southeast of Cobalt, Ontario, and reached from that centre either by branch line of the T. & N. O. railway or by what, for a mining camp, is a reasonably good road, the Keeley mine, owned by the Keeley Silver Mines,' Ltd., has had its history recorded by C. W. Knight (1). Silver was first discovered in South Lorrain, in Woods' vein, on Keeley property, in 1907, and the Keeley mine has been described by Knight (2) and Bell (3). The total production to February 28th, 1930, has been 10,760,107 ounces of silver and 1,285. 434 pounds (weight) of cobalt.

Modern underground mines operate fleets of mobile production equipment including drill jumbos, long-hole drills, load-haul-dump machines, trucks and bolters. Their availability has a substantial impact onto production cost and thus onto mine profitability. Through appropriate collection of pertinent data and information, use of adequate performance measures and their analyses, mine operators can identify the most promising and cost effective opportunities to get more from their equipment and to reduce the overall cost. This paper presents results of the study aimed to review and analyse means and measures used to quantify equipment availability and its contributing factors (reliability, maintainability and maintenance support) in several Canadian underground mines. It overviews current reporting procedures, sources, quality and quantity of the data and information collected as well as examines performance measures and their definitions used by the surveyed mines. Problems concerning data acquisition as well as meaningfulness and usefulness of the above mentioned metrics are also discussed. The paper concludes with some suggestions and recommendations concerning several aspects of equipment availability assessment. It is believed that the latter may become a more useful tool for mine operators in their efforts to reduce production cost than it seems to be the case at present.
