"This paper presents a short history of the development of milling at Buchans, Newfoundland, and a description of the operation.History and DevelopmentTHE original ore discovery was made at Buchans in 1905 by Matty Mitchell, a Micmac Indian who was prospecting for The Anglo Newfoundland Development Company, which company was then preparing to build a paper mill at Grand Falls, some 50 miles east of Buchans. A development program, initiated in 1906, was terminated in 1911 because of metallurgical difficulties. Intermittent testing was carried out by The American Smelting and Refining Company, and in 1925 a satisfactory method of concentration by flotation was found. Following this, intensive geophysical reconnaisasnce, succeeded by diamond drilling, uncovered two additional orebodies similar to the original discovery at Buchans River."

Brunswick mine employs an ore and waste pass system for material transfer. This paper reviews the evolution and performance of ore pass systems at the mine. It presents the range of selected configurations, inclination, dimensions, etc. Select case studies are used to address the influence of structure, stress and materials handling on the longevity of the employed ore passes.

This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. The history of electrolytic copper production in Finland is closely connected with the industrialization of Finland and events of the Second World War. Production of cathode copper by electrowinning from the processing of Outokumpu ore started in 1913 based on the Hybinette nickel process, however due to the poor performance of this process, the plant was closed in 1929. Outokumpu commenced copper smelting at Imatra in eastern Finland in 1936 producing blister copper for refining outside the country. Due to the threating military situation, a new electrolytic copper refinery was built in 1941 at Pori in western Finland to refine the anodes. This was the first electrolytic copper refinery in Finland. It was built with 108 cells having a capacity of 12,000 tonnes/y. In addition, the smelter was relocated to nearby Harjavalta in 1944–1945. To fulfill the war reparations included in the peace treaty with the Soviet Union, a doubling of the smelter capacity was realised, with the Pori refinery capacity increasing to 20,000 tonnes/y in 1946 by adding additional cells. The cornerstone of Finnish metallurgical technology — Outokumpu flash smelting — was invented with the new technology commissioned at Harjavalta in 1949 replacing the electric furnace and providing a further increase in copper output with subsequent enlargement of the refinery. By 1963, the plant consisted of 380 cells with a capacity of 48,000 tonnes/y of cathode copper. The Pori electrolytic copper refinery has operated continuously since 1941. Commencing in 2004 the Pori refinery has been part of the Boliden group of Sweden. The most recent plant upgrade was in 2007 with the installation of permanent cathode technology. In 2017, the production of the Pori refinery was 133,000 tonnes of copper cathode, 2,300 tonnes of nickel sulphate, along with 66 tonnes of silver and 4.6 tonnes of gold. This paper describes these outstanding achievements. INTRODUCTION In 1809 the Kingdom of Sweden was defeated by the Russian Empire in the Finnish War, and Finland was annexed by the Russian Empire as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Finland’s commercial and industrial interests were developed to serve the Empire’s needs. Finland had raw materials, but at the start of the 20th century Finnish industry was based on the use of wood as raw material and agricultural products. The mining industry was only a few percent of the country’s industrial production.

"At the 1992 PDAC Convention, Norman Keevil announced the formation of the Exploration Technology Division (ETD) of the Mining Industry Technology Council of Canada (MITEC). It was evident that base metal reserves in Canada were declining and that the cost of discovering a deposit in Canada was increasing. Coordinated research to develop new exploration technologies was required to discover the next generation of ore-bodies. The ETD was formed in response.The mission of the ETD is to contribute to the survival, profit, and growth of the Canadian mining industry by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of mineral exploration through development of innovative technology by man-aging and coordinating applied cooperative research. In addition, it is the intent of the ETD to become the principal agency by which cooperative research funds are transferred to researchers from the mining industry. The division is industry driven, industry funded and industry managed.The ETD’s Three-Year Plan has focussed80% of its research funds toward two objectives, improving the efficiency of exploration for VMS deposits and establishing the parameters necessary to discover the next Hemlo deposit. The remaining 20% is allocated to other projects, with the current emphasis on geophysics.In 1995, corporate members total twenty-three major mining companies accounting for90% of the exploration expenditures in Canada. The ETD is currently managing ten cooperative research projects totalling $4.6million. Other projects, estimated at $1.6 mil-lion, are currently under development."

The effects of particle size distribution on metal extraction have been determined from pressure leaching Renzy Mines Limited concentrate with oxygen. Using a pulp density of 30 per cent solids, an oxygen pressure of 80 psig, a temperature of 230°F, a grind of 2.5 hours and a retention of 8 hours resulted in the almost complete dissolution of the nickel and the cobalt and the decomposition of over 96 per cent of the chalcopyrite finer than 20 microns. Only 11 per cent of the chalcopyrite coarser than 20 microns was reduced to smaller than 20 microns.

Coal-bearing Tertiary sediments of the Ravenscrag Formation in southern Saskatchewan host numerous deposits of clinker resulting from in situ coal combustion. Clinker deposits form when sediments of relatively low temperature firing properties overlie coal seams which are undergoing prolonged spontaneous combustion. The resulting fired material is useful for decorative landscaping aggregate, rock gardens, driveways, mud control and others. Predicting the occurrence of clinker deposits requires a knowledge of the spatial distribution of coal seams and the nature ofoverlying sediments. Knowledge ofpaleotopography at the time of coal combustion can assist in locating more highly-fused material which can yield greater block sizes. Coal data bases can be used as a predictive tool by outlining areas where coal is or was at or near surface and therefore may have been susceptible to spontaneous combustion.

An applicable Eluex process was developed for acid in-situ leaching (ISL) uranium mine in Bayanwula. In this process, uranium was adsorbed with strong base anion resin from the pregnant solution, then the loaded resin was eluted by sulfuric acid. After D2EHPA extraction, the concentrated eluate was enriched, and the loaded organic phase was stripped by sodium carbonate. The yellow cake was obtained by sodium hydroxide precipitation at last. The uranium concentration in the loaded strip solution was 52.8 g/L. Parameters of the process were determined, and the impact of the Eluex process in underground leaching was also investigated. In industrial design, 95% of raffinate went back to elution and 5% back to in-situ leaching. No significant effect on uranium leaching or resin adsorption was found.

"The recovery of gold by gravity from grinding circuits differs from virtually all other gravity recovery approaches in that stage (or unit) recoveries are low, typically 1 to 5%, but overall recoveries are generally in the 25 to 60% range, because individual gold particles are presented many times to the primary recovery unit. Full-scale recovery is difficult to predict from benchscale tests. Further, maximizing metallurgical recovery is generally not the primary objective, because of the more efficient downstream recovery circuit (flotation or cyanidation). In this paper, a new concept, the gravity recovery effort, is presented to assist in the design and optimization of gold gravity circuits. It is defined as the product of the circulating load treated by the primary gravity unit, the recovery of this unit, and the gold room recovery. Predicted gold recovery is linked to the recovery effort, the size distribution of gravity recoverable gold (GRG), the dimensionless retention time in the mill and the partition curve of GRG. A case study of economic optimization of the gravity recovery effort is presented. INTRODUCTIONPredicting gold gravity recovery from grinding circuits has always been a hit-and-miss exercise. The problem can be traced to the highly variable gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content of ores, high GRG circulating load, fraction of the circulating load treated, and performance of primary gravity recovery and gold room. The method is particularly useful for the valuation of early-stage exploration properties. Unfortunately, valuators are sometimes imprecise in distinguishing between joint ventures and other types of transactions.At VALMIN '94, Bob Appleyard1 proposed that, if one ignores the time value of money and the probability that the expenditure commitment would be completed, the formula to calculate the value ($V) of a property owned by Party B at the time of the deal would be:$V =$Ex (100-1%)/1% (Formula I)Where $V is the value of the property2Where $E is the expenditure commitment by Party A, andWhere 1% is the percentage property interest to be earned by party A.At PACRIM '99, Mike Lawrence and Graham Dewar3 referred to this method and suggested that there was an ambiguity in the formula proposed by Appleyard in 1994. "Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. ABSTRACT Nickel compounds vary significantly in their toxicological properties, so it is critical that continuing studies to accurately quantify worker exposures consider the processing that accompanies refining nickel-containing materials. The Clydach nickel refinery, which has operated for more than 100 years, was the first nickel-producing facility to show a high risk for lung and nasal-sinus cancers among workers employed since it opened in 1902. Process chemistry and equipment have changed dramatically over Clydach’s history. This paper describes the processing evolution at Clydach with a focus on the propensity for aerosol formation and the forms of nickel in airborne dusts.

INVESTIGATIONS to date have shown that, should there be the need or the appropriate economic stimulus, Canada's mineral resources are sufficiently extensive to allow considerable expansion of its non-fuel mineral industry, during the remaining part of this century and possibly beyond (1, 2). The availability of sufficient capital will be one of the critical factors which will determine whether this potential will be fulfilled. The following analysis centers on the capital requirements of the Canadian non-fuel mineral industry under one set of basic assumptions of capacity growth, cost of new and replacement capacity, rates of depletion and depreciation of mines and plant, and the cost of exploration and infrastructure. Mindful of the fact that exploration and development will not thrive in Canada unless a very positive approach is taken, the writers make no apologies for being "optimistic" about long-term production prospects. Furthermore, in the event that world demand does escalate as anticipated and the forecast realistically attainable levels of Canadian production are not reached, then Canada will not have reaped the full range of economic benefits available, and opportunities will have been lost. Projections for Canadian production between 1976 and 2000 are essentially based on the forecast published in the 1974 paper, "Towards a Mineral Policy for Canada - Opportunities for Choice (3), with some updating on the basis of recent developments.

Abstract The aqueous oxidation of pyrite in caustic solutions under oxygen pressure was investigated by measuring that effect of reaction variable on oxygen consumption by the reactions. From the results of this investigation, a model for the process has been proposed. In this model, sulphur diffuses as a positive ion through an oxide layer which forms on the sulphide particles and is then oxidized to sulphate ion. Iron is oxidized by substitutional diffusion of oxygen atoms into the oxide layer. The effect of most reaction variables on the rate of oxygen consumption can be explained with this model. Introduction Recent investigations (1,2,3) have shown that certain sulphide ores can be readily leached by agitating the ore in the form of a pulp under pressure in the presence of oxygen. Since very little was known of the mechanism of this oxidation, a programme of investigation was inaugurated in 1949 in the laboratories of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of the University of British Columbia. Financial support for the investigation was received from the National Research Council in the form of student grants and bursaries, from the Canadian Liquid Air Company, Limited, and from the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The first objective was to devise a technique to study the primary oxidation reactions in aqueous solutions and to apply the technique to a detailed study of the oxidation of pyrite in caustic solutions.

Pyrrhotite (Po) is widely considered to be the most significant mineral in the self-heating of sulphides. It is therefore desirable to determine the amount of Po in mineral samples. This is commonly accomplished through x-ray diffraction (XRD) or quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscopy (QEM-SEM). This paper introduces another quantitative method based on Mossbauer analysis that requires limited sample preparation and has the additional potential to detect the sulphur/iron ratio within Po. The technique is explored using pentlandite/pyrrhotite mixtures.

The sulphur consumed in Canadian pulp mills and acid plants is worth approximately three million dollars annually and amounts to one hundred and fifty thousand long tons, all of which is imported from the United States. Concurrently with a decline in the value of newsprint there has been a gradual increase in the price of this raw material. Most pulp mills in Canada are situated within reasonable distance of domestic pyrite deposits; nevertheless it has not yet been found possible to mine these deposits and utilize the contained sulphur in competition with the imported material. It is the purpose of this paper to elucidate the reasons therefor, and to describe? a commercial-scale experiment undertaken with the object of introducing a native raw material into the Canadian pulp industry on the purely economic basis. Reasons for the Preferred use of Sulphur The known sulphur deposits in the United States are very large, so that at least a twenty-year supply of this material is assured. It is recovered cheaply and in pure condition. Although large deposits of pyrite are known in Canada, nothing has yet been developed to compare in size, cost of mining, or purity with the United States material. It has been necessary to handle and transport more than two tons of pyrite to equal a ton of sulphur.

"The great interest taken in uranium in Canada during the past few years has resulted in the discovery of a very large number of occurrences, and in much research that has added to the knowledge of the mineralogy and geology of uranium deposits. The object of this paper is to present that information in condensed form. Some of it has been published before, but the writer has been asked to bring it together and to add more recent, unpublished data. The paper therefore contains short accounts of the mineralogy of uranium and of the types and distribution of occurrences; brief regional descriptions, including information on some of the characteristic deposits; and conclusions regarding prospecting and development possibilities.The writer has access to much confidential information supplied in compliance with regulations of the Atomic Energy Control Board. He has used this only for making broad generalizations that could not affect individual interests, and only where the owners of properties have agreed to its use.Much of the information on mineralogy and geology is derived from the work of others. THE British Columbia Coal Control was established in 1946 as a branch of the Department of Lands. Its functions are the administration of the Goal Act, the making of field and laboratory investigations bearing on the delineation and utilization of British Columbia coal deposits, and the dissemination of information concerning them. The Department of Lands in the Province of British Columbia retains and administers many of the Province's resources until such time as they are actively developed under the departments of Agriculture, of Forests, of Mines, etcc. The work of the Control is one of stock taking and appraising. We are picking up where the geological surveys leave off. In an effort to assist in the orderly, scientific development -of our excellent and extensive' ?Coat resources, we are bridging the gap between exploration and geological examination on the -one hand and mining on the other. All coal analyses required in the course of the investigations, together with? those requested by prospectors and others, are carried out in the very modern and efficient laboratories of the Coal, Petroleum, and Natural Gas Control. At its inception, the Coal Control began an investigation of coal seams in the Peace River area, specifically those contiguous to the Pine River valley about one hundred miles west of Dawson Creek. The occurrence of coal in the Peace River canyon, east of Hudson's Hope, bad been known since 1792, but the first record of production is for 1923.

Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.

"The paper refers to methods and concepts used in the computer treatment of banks of geophysical, geochemical and geological data, relating to the exploration of massive sulphides. In particular, a data bank of 400 drill holes on independent conductors can be used to calculate probability levels of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides according to the characteristics of the conductor. Inversely one can, using the data bank and some cost assumptions, simulate and optimize the cost of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides by selecting drill targets among conductors according to conductivity, magnetism or gravity. Problems of noise, inherent in any simulation, are illustrated in this paper by the results of a study of the nomenclature of volcanic rocks of 27 drill holes by forty geologists. Compilations of data banks are long and timeconsuming, and it would help to standardize to allow exchange of data. We believe that such efforts may result in the discovery of more mineral deposits and at a lower cost. The present study is supported jointly by SOQUEM The New Jersey Zinc Co. and Cominco Ltd."
