"When pyrite oxidizes in dark grey/black, calcareous, mudrocks or in argillaceous limestones, ferrous sulfate is formed and sulfuric acid is released. The sulfuric acid combines with the calcite present in the rock and calcium sulfate (gypsum) develops. When this occurs on the outer edges of aggregate particles, the gypsum forms in the matrix hence there may be little expansion of the general material. However, when the chemical reactions occur within the rock fragments, particularly on microscopic, clayrich, laminae, the developing crystals exert a significant pressure on the host material. If the rock is medium strong to strong, the force of crystallization splits the rock along the weaker planes, facilitating the ingress of the oxidizing agents and the continuation of the chemical reactions. In addition to causing dilation/heave, some of the engineering properties of the material are changed, including the strength, Los Angeles value, water absorption etc. As a consequence material, which at the time of quarrying would be acceptable for use beneath floors or hardstandings, would no longer be considered suitable.INTRODUCTIONMudrocks accreting in aerobic environments are frequently disturbed by organisms and as a consequence there is often little sign of bedding. In contrast, sediments which have formed in anoxic environments commonly have distinct bedding planes which, because of the grain size of the accreting material, are often smooth and planar. These rocks are frequently referred to as shales, which O’Brien and Slatt (1990) define as “characterised by a finely laminated structure, which imparts a fissility approximately parallel to the bedding.” This should not be confused with rhythmic bedding where the variation in grain size results in lithological laminations or colour changes.Early geologists, in the stratigraphic naming of rocks, often used the term shale for material which is now more likely to be described as mudstone or mudrock (Hawkins and Pinches, 1992). In many contexts, the width of the bedding is an important factor, not only in determining the rock name but also in indicating the potential engineering characteristics. Until recently a shale was considered to have bedding separations of less than 20mm, i.e. the bedding was described as laminated. However, in an engineering context, EN 14689: 2003, Annex A, defines shale by specifying a bedding thickness of < 6mm; such a material would be described as thinly laminated in BS 5930:1999. Ideally the term shale should be abandoned and be replaced by fissile mudstone or fissile mudrock."

Environmental monitoring plays a key role in coal mine safety. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of systems suitable for monitoring air in underground coal mines. Because of intensive mining and large capital outlay, the need for higher productivity consistent with safety is well recognized and it appears that environmental monitoring may help achieve this objective. This paper reviews the state-of- the-art in the monitoring technology with particular reference to hazardous gas detection in underground coal mines. The preliminary results obtained from ongoing studies, with regard to continuous monitoring of methane and carbon monoxide in mine air in some of the operations in Western Canada, are discussed. The inadequacies of the methods using spot samples are examined and the need to supplement the present practice with continuous monitoring systems is emphasized.

"Shales play a major role in the stability of slopes, both natural and engineered. This paper attempts to provide a review of the state-of-the-art in shale slope stability. The complexities of shale terminology and classification are first reviewed followed by a brief discussion of the important physical and mechanical properties of relevance to shale slope stability. The varied mechanisms of shale slope stability are outlined and their importance highlighted by reference to international shale slope failures. Stability analysis and modelling of anisotropic rock slope masses are briefly discussed and the potential role of brittle rock fracture and damage highlighted. A short review of shale slopes in open pits is presented.INTRODUCTIONShales have been stated to form approximately 58% of sedimentary rock so it is not surprising that they are frequently encountered in both natural and engineered slopes. They represent challenging environments for slope stability due to the wide variation in their engineering properties, their changing behaviour with time due to geomorphic processes and the variation in the failure mechanisms as a function of both stratigraphy and tectonics. An extensive body of literature exists on the terminology and classification relevant to shales; it is not possible in the scope and length of the current paper to review these works in detail and the reader is referred to Farrokhrouz and Asef (2013), Bell (2000) and Goodman (1993) for detailed discussions. It is arguably the case that no universally accepted classification of shales exists today and depending on the field of application the terminology varies widely. Shales in slope stability, for the purpose of this keynote paper, are taken to include material varying in properties from weak rocks to soils and therein lies one of the most challenging aspects in shale slope characterisation for engineering purposes. They have been classified as “rock-like” or “soil-like’, (Underwood 1967) or compacted and cemented, Table 1, Yagiz (2001). Classifications have considered numerous factors including composition, cementation and a wide range of engineering properties.The propensity of shales to degrade with time due to geomorphic processes has resulted in an important aspect in their classification, that is, the attempts to incorporate slaking, durability and swelling and softening behavior through purpose developed testing methods (Gamble 1971, Morgenstern and Eigenbrod, 1974). Figures 1 and 2 show examples of terminology used to describe argillaceous materials and some proposed engineering classification schemes (Grainger 1984 and Bott 1986). Corominas (2014) provides a recent classification of argillaceous rocks and their durability relating five stages of slope deterioration to the texture of the rock on Ternary diagrams. No attempt will be made here to discuss the merits of the proposed terminology and classifications, suffice it to say, that the controversy and flux surrounding these issues is a strong indicator of the complexities in the behavior of these materials. In this paper the author will consider slope stability in the materials indicated in Table 1, Figures 1 and 2 without undue focus on terminology. At the lower strength limit of shales the engineer must design slopes using the principles of soil mechanics which may vary from the simple Mohr Coulomb plasticity constitutive criterion to modified critical state models, some even attempting to incorporate softening behaviour in the weaker clay shale materials. Given the transitional nature of shale materials several workers have treated overconsolidated clays and clay shales using concepts such as peak and residual shear strength, brittleness index and softening. Martin and Stacey (2013) provide a useful review of the importance of weak rocks in open pit mining, with mudrocks as a specific member, and note the importance of delayed failure, progressive failure and loosening in the stability of"

Tailing Dams Three types of dam have been structed to impound tailings from the Allenby mill: 1.- By classifier unit 2.- By earth dam 3.- By direct deposition of tailings The first type, which includes two dams, was built across a shallow valley which sloped down to Similkameen river, just below the mill site. Two earth embankments, one below the other, were built across the valley. Tailings were then piped to Akins classifiers mounted on wooden wheels. The classifiers were set up at one side of the valley and gradually moved ahead on the sand embankment created by the sand discharge from these classifiers, the slime overflow going to settli.ng ponds formed by the dams. Decanting wells were built in the settling ponds by placing four six-by-six timbers vertically in the ground, two feet apart, to which two-by-six tongue-and-groove boards were nailed. The elevations of the ponds were raised, as required, by nailing additional two-by-six boards on the well and bolting on more six-by-six timbers when required. The bottoms of the wells were attached to a covered launder made of three-inch lumber laid on a one per cent grade. This launder carried the overflow through the dam. The second type of dam was built across a long, narrow valley, known as Hitchen&apos;s Flat, the upper ~n d of which was about 2½ miles north of the mill. This valley, an ideal tailings site, was 4,000 feet long and from 600 to 800 feet wide. An earth embankment with a concrete spillway through the top was built approximately 28 feet high across the lower end of this valley. Tailings were then dumped into the upper end of valley, with no further expense until the basin was filled up to the level of the flume where this entered the valley. When the upper end of the valley was filled to this point there was still room for more tailings at the lower end. Therefore, a pump was installed to elevate the tailings to build a wall around the upper end of the valley by depositing sands from a launder built up on 20 foot supports and sloping both ways from the pumping station around the upper end of the basin.

"OPERATIONS at Canadian Cop-per Refiners Limited, since the refinery was established in 1931, have been described in previous papers ( 1,2). Since then the refinery has treated the entire copper output of Noranda Mines Limited and Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company Limited. With the commencement of production in 1956 at Gaspe Copper Mines Limited, this copper has also been refined. From the start of operations to the end of 1958, the following had been refined: copper, silver, gold, selenium and tellurium.Construction of new buildings and additions to other buildings have been needed to handle increased receipts. The refining capacity has been increased from 112,000 tons of copper per year to a total of 236,000 tons per year.The refinery is located at Mont-real East, Quebec, close to railway and highway facilities. Incoming materials and shipments, with some small exceptions, are handled by rail. Some finished products are sl1ipped by industrial flatcar to the adjoining plants of Canada Wire & Cable Company Limited and Noranda Copper & Brass Limited."

"The paper gives an overview of the economics condition and strategic business challanges of the mining&metallurgy sector and their possible impact on the future development of the Bor basin of copper in Serbian part of Danube Region. Economics and strategic challanges in the mining& metallurgy complex are emphasized by world economic and financial crisis. An analysis of strategic challanges is undertaken by application of a comprehensive development framework approach. Paper indicates that an economics and evaluation of possible impacts of constraints and challenges for the development of Bor basin shows that it must be included in corporative decision, local and regional plans.INTRODUCTIONRisks are characteristic of every strategic development and business decision-making, so their successful management should be a part of the development strategy of the corporation, especially longterm. Due to the growing uncertainty in the general socio-economic environment, “risk management”, risk insurance, risk control, risk culture, risk optimization are frequently talked about. Among the key risks at a corporate level are the financial risks and risks of the regulative framework, especially in the field of environment and land use. In both cases, it is a question of external risks, which the companies need to relativize and successfully manage. Some companies pay more attention to production risks and search for better solutions in that domain which is not enough (Ernst&Young, 2008). Strategic business risks appear mostly on the macro-economic level, from where they should be” transferred” onto the level of sector economics and action level in corporations. Risk management include transferring the risk to other parts, avoiding the risk, preventing hazard, reducing the negative effect or probability of the risk, accepting some or all of the consequences of a particular risk.The research has included perspective and the general market trend and market positioning of the production and copper processing complex in the world; the impact of the requirements and strategic goals of the EU Directive and Kyoto Protocol on the institutional and other adjustments important for business in this sector; the impact assessment of the regulations important for business in the mining and metals sector, and case study of economics and challenges for the development of mining and metallurgy sector in the Bor basin of copper in Serbian part of Danube region. The analysis has included the identification and assessment of the global challenges on the future development of the copper complex in the miningsmelting basin Bor. Presented results in the paper are part of the research project “Sustainable spatial development of the Danube area in Serbia"" (No. 036036), financed by Ministry of Education and science of Republic Serbia."

"Sylvinite ore from the Saskatoon area typically contains about 5% insolubles, occurring as clays and carbonates. These insoluble slimes must be removed sufficiently well to permit an efficient subsequent potassium chloride flotation, due to their high adsorptive capacity for amines used as potash collectors. The insolubles are liberated from sylvinite by high attrition scrubbing in a slurry. The liberated slimes are separated by multistage cycloning or by a selective flocculation-flotation process.An outline of the potash processing operations at Agrium Vanscoy Potash Operations is given, emphasizing the insoluble slimes froth flotation separation process. This process was originally implemented at the Agrium plant in the mid- 1970's and replaced a hydrocyclone system.IntroductionAgrium Vanscoy Potash Operations is located 40 Km southwest of Saskatoon, almost midway between the communities of Vanscoy and Delisle. Processing operations started in 1969, and the annual production capability was subsequently increased to the current 1.8 MM tonnes per year of muriate of potash.The mining operation at Agrium Potash which was described in a paper by Jones and Pruggerl , is done underground using four large continuous double rotor boring machines for the main production with development done by heliminers. Annual ore production is 5.5 MM tonnedannum. Ore is hoisted 1,100 m to surface for processing."

Introduction Since the discovery of a major oil pool at Leduc, Alberta, on February 13th, 1947, the long spell of &apos;oil drought&apos; in Western Canada is now being turned into an oil and gas flood which requires immediate action to obtain the optimum economic benefits. The Woodbend, Section 9, and Okalta extensions of the Leduc field itself have been established; the Redwater pool, lying thirty-seven miles northeast of Edmonton, has been discovered and is being drilled up, and the Imperial Schoepp No. 1 or Golden Spike discovery holds promise of something phenomenal in view of the 500 feet of oil-saturated coral-reef porosity whose areal extent is not known. Imperial Stanolind Barrhead No. 1, northwest of Edmonton, revealed the presence of oil in the Madison, and just recently Gulf N.J. Ellis No. 1, some sixty miles southeast of Leduc, found commercial production in the Leduc D-2 discovery zone. In addition to these Paloeozoic discoveries, gas and oil reserves have also been established in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, which must be penetrated by all tests on the way through the geological column to the Devonian. If ever there appeared to be an index of &apos;things to come&apos; in the oil industry, this is it. However, without these recent discoveries the picture in Western Canada does and always did, look very promising indeed. A brief survey of the geological setting in Western Canada is the object of this contribution.

"Although the Operations Research technique of Reliability Theory has been applied with marked success in many fields, including the Apollo spaceship programs, the concept of reliability has not been generally adopted in mining and other heavy industries. Of course, reliability, or the probability that a system will be able to operate without a failure for a given interval of time, does not require the same emphasis in mining as in the aerospace industries. Nevertheless, certain aspects of Reliability Theory can be followed advantageously. For example, reliability calculations can determine the best time to overhaul and whether to retain stand-by units.The usefulness of the pseudo-operations research technique known as Replacement Theory is more readily re-cognized by the maintenance engineers in mining and other heavy industries. One of the least complex models enables the optimum Lifetime of an asset to be determined."

The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, an outline of Canadian practice in the milling of gold-bearing ores- not, however, including those auriferous ores which are mined and milled primarily for their content of some other metal. It is not the writer&apos;s intention to offer technical data, nor to discuss any particular phase of the metallurgy, but rather to give a general résumé of past and present methods. As it is only within recent years that gold milling has assumed prominence in Canada, much of the technology is modern, and detailed articles describing the practice adopted in the several mining districts, and recording the various changes and innovations that have been made from time to time, are to be found in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and in the mining journals. Prior to the year 1860, any gold that had been produced in Canada had come from placer operations in British Columbia, but &apos; during that year lode gold was discovered in Nova Scotia, in quartz veins, and in several localities mines were opened and small mills of very simple character were erected to treat the ore. These plants, equipped with stamps, or arrastre, were only effective in recovering the free gold. Concentration and chlorination were introduced in an endeavour to save the gold occurring in intimate association with metallic minerals, but, due to various circumstances, gold mining and milling did not progress in Nova Scotia.

"Laboratory-scale sulphuric acid leach tests were conducted on Elliot Lake and Rabbit Lake ores in the presence of various oxidants, namely: Fe2(SO4)3, CI2, H2O2, NaClO3, MnO2, H2SO5, HNO3, Oxon e, K2Cr2O7, KMnO4, O3 and O2. Uranium extraction is significantly accelerated when an oxidant is present in the leach slurry. Uranium extraction of 96-99% can be achieved by maintaining the oxidation potential of the leach slurry in the range of400 to 500 m V (S.H.E.). A rough cost comparison of all the oxidant s indicates that the use of Fe2(SO4)3, 02, O3, C12, HNO3 or MnO2 is far less expensive than NaClO3 and the uranium extraction rates are similar to or better than with NaCIO3. For uranium extraction, it is concluded that gaseous oxygen (i.e., air or oxygen) would be the most effective and economical oxidant for the 24- to 36-hour leach of Elliot Lake ore; whereas for the 8- to I2-hour leach of Rabbit Lake ore, a strong chemical oxidant (e.g. NaCIO3, H202, 03, K2Cr2O7, H2SO5 or HNO3) would be a logical choice.IntroductionThe common practice for the treatment of uranium o res is leaching with sulphuric acid or with a carbonate-bicarbonate mixture. Generally, the latter process is ad opted when an excess (> 18%) of acid-consuming components (e.g., carbonate) is present in the ore. Irrespective of the nature of the leachant, the addition of an oxidant to the leach mixture is necessary to obtain a high uranium extraction.The maximum extraction of uranium can only take place when all the uranium is in the highest oxidation state (i.e.,U +6-uranic ion) . Because a certain percentage of uranium present in the ore is invariably in the lower oxidation state (i.e.,U+4-uranous ion) , the addition of an oxidant to the leach slurry is necessary to oxidize uranous ion to the uranic state."

During ore body modeling normally additional samples are required to improve resources evaluation and mining planning. At this stage one rises the question about where additional samples should be located. Regular sampling pattern seems to be a reasonable choice, since all the regions within the deposit receive the same number of samples without a clear clustering. Nevertheless, values for certain attributes (grades for instance) from a mineral deposits may behave more erratic in some regions than others. Consequently, by adding samples to these regions could bring more benefit for reducing the uncertainty related to a transfer function such as Net Present Value (NPV), instead of adding samples to location of low grade uncertainty. Thus, for a given number of additional data, the test of a regular pattern and a pattern which add samples on areas of high uncertainty of the attribute of interest is worth. This paper presents an algorithm that allows the construction of these two patterns, automatically, on a software commonly used in the mining industry. The algorithm leads to a fast analysis on the efficiency of the two patterns in reducing the uncertainty associated with a transfer function.

Start-up of a Hall-Heroult cell is a delicate task that can affect pot performance and pot life. Modem practices for high amperage cells involve preheating the lining before the molten electrolyte is poured in. Different preheating methods and heat-up schedules are used throughout the industry, and the optimum between a short start-up and damage minimization to the cell is elusive. Direct electrical coke-bed preheating is one of the most common techniques. This practice typically results in a non-uniform surface temperature distribution and can generate detrimental thermal gradients in the cathode blocks. Numerical modeling is an invaluable tool to study this complex problem and can help improve the preheating procedures. The modeling of the mechanical response of the lining is critical to detect risks of cathode block cracking or the development of gaps where liquids could leak into. Taking into account the baking of ramming paste, the quasi-brittle nature of carbon and the contact interfaces between different materials are examples of key elements to consider. A finite element slice model of a cell was built and simulations of different electrical preheating scenarios were performed using the inhouse code FESh++ to demonstrate what can be learned through thermo-chemomechanical modeling. The potential industrial application of the model is discussed.

L&apos;exploitation par mine aciel ouvert a commencé en 1965 avec une operation à flanc de montagne. Elle se poursuit actuellement sous Ie niveau de la vallée dans une fosse dont Ie diamètre est de I&apos;ordre de 800 m (2,600 pi), et la profondeur de 150 m (500 pi) sou s Ie fond de la vallee. Elle doit atteindre une profondeur de 360 m (l, 180 pi) sous Ie fond de la vallee , avec des murs hauts de 360 à 490 m et des pentes moyenne de 44°. Le rythrne d&apos;extraction est actuellement de 85,000 tonnes par jour.Dans Ie cadre des etudes entreprises par les Services Techniques de la Division Mines Gaspé, la compagnie Géomines Ltée a été consultée pour étudier les conditions hydrogéologiques et hydrologiques locales et participer a la conception d&apos;un système de drainage superficiel et souterr ain. Un tel systerne de drainage visait: a éviter les importantes venues d&apos;eau qu i affectent I&apos;exploitation en periode de crue; amaintenir les pressions hydrostatiques au sein des parois de la fosse dans les limites imposees par les etudes de stabilite des pentes réalisees par la Mine.Les principales étapes de cette etude ont porté sur: la collecte et la compilation des données sur la géologie, l&apos;hydrologie et l&apos;hydrogeologie du site; . la détermination des caractéristiques hydrauliques du milieu rocheux à partir d&apos;études structurales et de test s de perméabilité;"

"AbstractThe Suetut. Copper deposit, 230 miles northwest of Prince George, B.C., was discovered in August of 1971. Subsequent exploration has included 56,417 feet of surface diamond drilling in 139 holes. The deposit occur in gently dipping volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Takla Group, which out crops as rugged mountains.The general Mesozoic sequence comprises some 20,000 feet of green and red basaltic to andesitic rocks. The Lower Formation is characterized by subaqueous basalt, andesite and augite porphyry flows with interbedded breccias. They were rapidly deposited in tectonic depressions of limited extent and steep gradients. Facies changes are abundant. The Middle Formation. consists of volcaniclastic rocks made up of fragments from the underlying formation. Two cycles are discernible , both with basal turbiditic, tuffaceous sandstone and shale units overlain by massive, volcanic conglomerates exhibiting graded and cross bedding. A broader, shallower-water basin is indicated. The top of the uppermost unit was subaerially deposited. The Upper Formation is a variable sequence of volcanic sedimentary rocks. Detritus was supplied from a wide source area and included multiple reworked fragments of the lower formations and material from other rock groups known in the region. Zeolite facies metamorphism is recognized throughout: the entire sequence. Epidote is particularly abundant in the Middle Formation, demonstrating the results of metasomatism.The mineralized zone is approximately concordant with the strata over 100-200 feet of the Middle Formation succession . It lies just below the zone of transition from subaqueous to subaerial deposition in the top unit. Hematite, chalcocite, pyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite and native copper are disseminated throughout all sizes of lithic fragments and matrix. Concentration into the specific zone is believed to be due to upward leaching of copper during lowgrade metamorphic and metasomatic reaction. Precipitation occurred in the zone of hydration characterized by prehnite-pumpellyite below the oxidized subaerial rocks."

"T.L. Leaching ProcessCommercial PerformanceSociedad Minera Pudahuel Ltda. (SMP) has been innovating in the copper producing field with the commercial application of the Thin Layer (T .L.) leaching process in its two operating division s: Lo Aguirre and La Cascada. Since November 1980, SMP&apos; s Lo Aguirre Division has been producing high-purity copper cathodes at a nominal rate of about 16,500 metric tonnes / year, by mean s of the new route of T.L. leaching, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (TLlSX/EW). This has been the first commercial application on T .L. technology in the world, and the only commercial application in Chile for solvent extraction and electrowinning.By mid -1980, SMP acquired Sagasca Mining Co., renaming it as La Cascad a Division. The existing vat leaching facilities were modified to apply T.L. in the same old vats. The existing scrap iron cementation recovery circuit was kept running for the continuing production of copper precipitates. The modifications in the leaching circuit allowed shorter treatment cycles with a lower acid consumption and consequently, copper product ion increased from a previous historical high of 12,000-13,000 metric tonnes /year to a new level of about 22,000 metric tonnes/ year . These changes have been in operation since March 1981.T.L. Leaching commercial performance, both at Lo Aguirre (TL / SX /EW) and at La Cascada (TL/cementation), has been presented in several recent publications. Real operating parameters and process requirement s were reviewed in detail. A breakdown for TL / SX/ EW economics was also published based on Lo Aguirre&apos; s performance during 1982(41."

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. Le gisement Roby Zone est encaissé dans le complexe mafique/ultramafique de Lac des Iles (LDI-IC), lequel représente une intrusion polyphasée créée par plusieurs pulses magmatiques de différente composition à l’intérieur de chambres magmatiques fermés. La distribution chaotique des lithologies, la présence de brèches magmatiques, et la quasi-absence de litage rythmique suggèrent un environnement magmatique dynamique perturbé par l’introduction de nouveau magma. Au 31 décembre 2001, les ressources mesurées et indiquées s’élevaient à 159 millions de tonnes titrant 1,55 g/t Pd, 0,17 g/t Pt, 0,12 g/t Au, 0,05% Cu, et 0,05% Ni, pour une teneur de coupure de 0,7 g/t Pd. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. ABSTRACT The options for reducing the carbon footprint of energy use in mining fall into three categories of activity: i) reducing demand, ii) improving energy utilization, and iii) adopting low carbon energy technologies. In addition to the environmental imperative, the economic case for these activities gains higher priority as the prices of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels increase. Low-carbon, energy-saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital-intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as new mineral property developments. For energy services companies that specialize in the financing, construction, efficient operation, and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods can be considered acceptable or even attractive.

"The Red Lake Mine is situated in Balmer Township, Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario. It is an underground mine that has been in production since 1948. The property was originally known as the Dickensen Mine and was shut down in 1996.A feasibility study was carried out in 1998 and it was determined that a new mill should be constructed with a throughput rate of 600 stpd. The life-of-mine average gold grade was projected to be 1.35 oz/t with gold predominantly associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite. Metallurgical testwork indicated that the optimal flowsheet for gold recovery would include an autoclave for oxidation with a carbon circuit for adsorption. To limit capital cost and establish cashflow, the mill was constructed without an autoclave. The recovery by gravity and cyanidation was projected to be 83%. A flotation plant was constructed at the tail end of the circuit to recover the additional gold associated with sulphides from the leach circuit tailings. This material is being stockpiled onsite for future oxidation treatment.Detailed engineering was started in early 1999 and the first gold was poured in August 2000. One feature of the project was the use of Contact Lake equipment from Cameco’s Contact Lake project. The entire mill was purchased and equipment re-used where possible. The capital cost for the process facilities was C$3 1.5 million."

This paper presents a review of research conducted at the University of Waterloo concerned with the application of aluminum alloy sheet and tube in automotive structures and body panels. The research has focussed on formability prediction and results using a range of damage-based formulations. These models include continuum-level damage approaches and, more recently, a so-called percolation damage approach intended to capture microstructural heterogeneity effects on damage development. This paper presents applications of these damage approaches to simulate formability of experiments considering stretch flange panels. The experiments consider drawbead effects associated with the bend/unbend deformation as the material flows through the drawbead. Recent work on simulating in situ X-ray tomography experiments that capture damage evolution during tensile deformation will also be reviewed.
