"The revamp of critical process assets that require a significant plant outage (shutdown) presents a unique and demanding set of challenges for plant operators. They are executed in a more complex Brownfield environment, typically with limited working space and often involve unknown conditions or scope. For plant operators, such a project is often a high cost event both in terms of opportunity cost of lost production and the resource cost of labor and materials. It can also be a high risk event in terms safety, environment, and future plant reliability/availability. This impacts current and future performance or Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). In our experience, the sequential nature of the EPCM approach does not provide the proper framework to facilitate the level of coordination, stakeholder cooperation and detailed planning required to adequately address the construction and shutdown complexity of a critical asset revamp projects. This paper proposes a more integrated approach to handling shutdown revamps of critical assets. Its main thesis is to involve the key performing stakeholder groups early in the project lifecycle (engineering team, procurement team, construction team and plant operations) to form an integrated shutdown management team that is focused on ensuring delivered results are aligned with project objectives. In this model, the construction team executing the shutdown/construction is preparing the detailed shutdown/construction planning concurrently with detailed engineering and procurement planning. This allows construction/shutdown requirements to influence engineering and procurement, with the desire to optimize safety, speed, quality and cost. The paper also discusses how to overcome the procurement hurdle in applying such an approach. The outcome of this integrated approach is better planning, coordination, communication and alignment between the project stakeholders, a shutdown/construction driven planning approach that more fully addresses the challenges of these projects and delivered results that are aligned with project objectives."

"The Archean Blake River Group is best known from a central volcanic complex in Rouyn-Noranda. This volcano-tectonic depression, delimited by the Hunter Creek fault to the north and the Horne Creek fault to the south, is interpreted to be a cauldron approximately 20 km in diameter. Its western and eastern boundaries are the Flavrian Plutonand the D'Alembert shear zone respectively. The complex has an exposed stratigraphic thickness of 10.5 km. Two cycles, composed of andesitic units overlain by bimodal, andesite - rhyolite units, are observed in the area, and are, in turn, overlain by an andesitic unit interpreted to be the lower part of a third cycle.The southern sector of the Blake River Group, south of the central volcanic complex, is considered to be outside the limits of the cauldron, but partly contemporaneous with it. The maximum stratigraphic thickness exposed in this area is 4 .6 km. At least two cycles occur in this sector. The oldest unit, a pre-cauldron andesitic to basaltic unit, occurs only in the southern part of the sector. In the north, two partial andesite - bimodal cycles, interpreted as contemporaneous with the cauldron volcanism, are observed.The eastern sector of the Blake River Group, east of the central volcanic complex, apparently overlies the complex. Two units are observed in this sector: a lower bimodal unit and an uper andesitic unit. The bimodal unit is coupled with the uppermost andesitic unit of the central volcanic complex to form a cycle, and the andesitic unit is considered to be the uppermost unit of the Blake River Group. The total exposed stratigraphic thickness in the sector is 2.5 km.The western sector of the Blake River Group, north and west of the central volcanic complex, is interpreted as the lateral equivalent of the complex. Three andesite - bimodal cycles are exposed in this sector, giving a total stratigraphic thickness of9 .5 km. The two lower cycles correspond directly to the central volcanic complex cycles; this correlation is facilitated by two stratigraphic marker units observed on either side of the Hunter Creek fault: the Fish-roe rhyolite flow, east of the Flavrian pluton, and a spherulitic rhyolite lapilli-tuff, west of the Flavrian pluton.Many of the volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits found in the central volcanic complex are spatially and temporally associated with synvolcanic faults, and felsic domes and feeder dykes that are the sites of felsic volcanism in the bimodal units. However, these features also occur outside the central volcanic complex, and the similarities recognized in this work between the complex and the surrounding area suggest that such deposits need not be restricted to the central volcanic complex. The presence of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits outside the complex confirms this."

"10.1. IntroductionAs discussed by Westland (1981), the six platinum-group elements (PGE) belong to the Group VIII transition metals, to which iron, nickel and cobalt also belong. The chemical similarity between these nine metals accounts for the fact that they tend to be concentrated together as a result of geological processes. These processes started to effect the distribution of these metals at the very beginning of the earth's history.The first line in Table 1 gives the concentration of nickel and certain other Group VIII transition metals in carbonaceous chondrites, those meteorites with a composition that is believed to reflect best the composition of our planetary system apart from hydrogen and helium. The second line is the estimated concentration of the same elements in the earth as a whole. It is seen that these two estimates are quite similar, the earth being perhaps 2 to 3 times richer in these particular metals than the planetary system as a whole. The reason for this is not fully understood, but it may be due to the earth being formed by the accumulation and capture of a greater proportion of iron (and therefore siderophile-rich) than stoney (and therefore siderophile-poor) planetesimals than the planetary system itself.The third line in Table 1 is the average composition of the crust of the earth. With the exception of iron, all of the Group VIII transition elements are rare in the crust, present at concentrations of It tOO to Itt ,000 of that of the bulk earth. This is because the outstanding chemical characteristic of this group of elements is their siderophile nature; that is, their tendency to alloy with metallic iron. Because of this, once the earth became molten very early in its life history, these elements dissolved in the molten iron present at this stage and were removed from the outer accessible parts as this dense liquid sank to the centre of the earth to form the core. Although iron was the main instrument of concentration of the Group VIII metals, its much greater over-all abundance and its ability to combine with oxygen more easily than the others in the group means that significant amounts still remain in the oxidized portions of the earth.The fact that most of the Group VIII metals are available to use in workable concentrations at all is that they are 5 to 30 times more concentrated in the earth's mantle than the crust, as shown in line 4 of Table I. There has been a constant, if slow, interchange of matter between the mantle and the overlying crust throughout most of the earth's history and, under certain circumstances, this interchange has given rise to economic concentrations of metals."

THE profitable disposal and utilization of much of our slack coal, lignite, and other low-grade fuels is one of the major problems facing the coal mining industry of Canada today. It is my belief that the pulverization process applied to these fuels opens the door to greater efficiency and greater prosperity, and I wish to discuss briefly with you some features of its development and advantages to date. Indeed, the art of burning pulverized coal under stationary boilers is one of the romances of modern engineering. As a Nova Scotian, I feel some pride in the fact that at Chignecto Mines, N.S., was built in 1906 the first pit-mouth power plant on the North American continent. This was built to make effective for the first time Edison's dream of carrying coal for power by wire rather than by rail. This plant, built by the Maritime Coal, Railway and Power Company, Limited, success-fully utilized underfeed stokers for twenty years but in 1927 was replaced by a more modern plant equipped with machinery for burning pulverized coal, which is now operating very successfully. A further source of pride is the fact that the first boilers on this continent to be operated by pulverized coal were installed by the Dominion Coal Company at New Waterford, N.S., in 1912 and were satisfactorily operated during the lifetime of the plant. It is an acknowledged fact that average living conditions on a large part of the North American continent are far superior to those of any other people on earth. The reason is that we use so much more machinery per capita, and cheap power supply has been a large factor in bringing that about. Statistics show that where one horse-power was used one hundred years ago to assist man in his work, five hundred horse-power is used today. Truly a remarkable development and the key to our present high standard of living. Lack of coal in the chief industrial centres of Canada has forced the extra-ordinary development of the water powers which Providence has placed in those centres. How many of us realize that Canada stands second in the world in the per capita development of hydro power, Switzerland being first and the United States sixth? From this condition, we are reminded of the fact that the per capita foreign trade of Canada far exceeds that of our great neighbour to the South-but another illustration of the benefits accruing from our great power development.

The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. "Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. IN a preliminary paper (1) it was shown that the addition of small quantities of metallic aluminium powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of siliceous material in the beaker. Six rabbits exposed to quartz dust for six months all showed well developed silicosis. Seven rabbits exposed to quartz dust plus 1 per cent metallic aluminium powder for the same period did not develop silicosis. At that time, we were not in a position to state either the manner in which metallic aluminium reduced the solubility of siliceous material, or, from the animal experiments, whether the aluminium was acting locally or systemically, or for what period after the cessation of dusting it would continue to act. This paper reports the further progress of this investigation. CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTATION The technical details pertaining to the various substances used in the experiments are given in an appendix which is on deposit with the American Documentation Institute, Washington, D.C. For lack of space, it is not printed here. The term 'solubility' is used to indicate the concentration of silica in the solution under the conditions as noted, determined colorimetrically (2), and expressed as parts per million (p.p.m.). The term 'reduction in solubility' indicates the difference between the solubility of the .silica in the presence of the aluminium powder and its solubility in the absence of aluminium powder. It will be noted that the solubility figures for different samples of quartz with no added aluminium vary considerably. The figures do not refer to an equilibrium solubility of silica but to the actual amount of silica dissolved from a given sample in a given time at a given temperature. In view of the fact that quartz dissolves extremely slowly, it is evident that the actual figures in any case will depend upon the surface exposed, i.e., fineness of grinding of the different samples.

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. "The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

"Many concentrators use re-circulating “plant” water for dilution in their flotation circuits. However, if crusher dust suppressants, ball mill grinding aids, or even agitator bearing grease are introduced into this water, and the water itself is not subject to cleaning steps, then sufficient quantities of these chemicals may appear in the flotation cells and begin to impact the flotation separation. A bench flotation procedure has been coupled with statistical analysis in order to estimate the impact of small quantities of non-flotation chemicals on flotation performance.INTRODUCTIONCleveland Cliffs produces iron oxide pellets for blast furnace feed, and is developing the capability to produce ferrous metallic products to supply a wider customer base. Cliffs manages five North American iron mines, including the Wabush mine sites in Labrador and Quebec. Based on various characteristics of the ore bodies, the flow sheets of the five mines are diverse. For example, Hibbing Taconite uses magnetic separation alone as their primary upgrading method, but Northshore and Empire use magnetic separation followed by flotation, and Tilden uses flotation alone. Last but not least, the Wabush concentrator upgrades primarily with gravity and electrostatic separation techniques.At Northshore, concentrate from the magnetic separator circuit is fed to a reverse flotation circuit. By design, the magnetic separators operate at the highest possible recovery of magnetite, as the separator tails are discarded, and relatively high silica content was acceptable to Northshore’s customers. As the steel-making industry moved toward lower and lower slag volumes, the silica content in the magnetic separator concentrate became a problem. The flotation step was added in the late 1980s in order to decrease the silica assay of the magnetic separator concentrate to meet the current customer requirements. In this setting, the flotation feed stream contains very little silica that occurs as liberated quartz particles. As the degree of liberation of the flotation feed stream is then a limiting factor for silica removal, the online grind control then was linked to flotation in the overall plant control system so that grind can be adjusted to achieve improved liberation if necessary for the flotation process."

Introduction The last two or three decades have been marked by striking developments in methods of mining and tunnelling. In view .of increased competition and various economic factors, intensive ' mining has been largely practised, and no effort seems to have been spared to increase outputs and lower the cost of production. In metalliferous mining, the compressed-air rock-drill has effected marked savings in this direction, while in coal mining, the coal-cutting machine has revolutionized mining methods and materially contributed to economical working. Yet, for many years, little or no advance was made in methods of handling the rock, or coal, once it had been successfully broken. Loading by hand is, undoubtedly, the most laborious occupation in the whole of mining operations, and it is also the greatest single item that enters into the cost of production. In view of this, the lag of improved handling methods behind the process of winning the rock or coal is rather surprising. The point, however, was appreciated by mining men, and the introduction of various forms of conveyors and loaders is the result. The belt conveyor, the chain conveyor, the shaker conveyor, and the mechanical shovel entered various parts of the field, but it was left to scraping to provide a method of both conveying and loading. From the pure loading point of view, the choice lies between mechanical shovels and scraper loaders. While it is realised that each of these machines has applications peculiar to itself, yet it should be realised that much work which has hitherto been done by mechanical shovels can be done equally effectively with scraper loaders and at a considerable saving both from the point of view of initial outlay and upkeep.

Introduction This paper describes a recent innovation in the design and construction of mine headframes. A reinforced concrete headframe was built by using sliding forms. A concrete headframe of conventional design was originally considered, but investigation of this project showed that it was doubtful if the bearing strength of the soil was sufficient to support the great weight of a structure of this type. In addition, the slope and the fractured condition of the serpentine bed-rock did not permit satisfactory piling. A conventional steel headframe with storage bins was then designed, but, due to the steel situation, delivery promises were set back many months. The concrete headframe was again investigated, and a design was adopted incorporating a circular headframe lower in height than that first considered, with skips discharging into a smaller surge bin. The upper section of the shaft collar was strengthened to result in a stable structure which would be supported by bed-rock, as well as by the concrete and steel lining of the shaft itself.

"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). Jusqu?à son acquisition par MM René Dufour et Alain Robin en 1994, les claims miniers et les droits de surface de la propriété étaient détenus depuis 1953 par la société Québec Columbium, une filiale de la socité américaine Kennecott Copper qui y a réalisé d?importants travaux miniers. En 1995 la compagnie NIOCAN inc. fut incorporée; ses actions furent inscrites à la bourse de Montréal en 1997, et à la bourse de Toronto en décembre 1999. Jusqu?à maintenant, NIOCAN a investi plus de 7 millions de dollars dans le développement de sa propriété minière de niobium située à quelques 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Le haut rendement économique des deux gisements principaux que compte exploiter la compagnie, le S-60 et le HWM-2, a été établie par des études de faisabilité effectuées par le consortium Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin. There are presently several issues that the mining industry is facing, such as underground air quality, deep mining and green house gas emissions, which could be addressed by the application of alternate energies. Several aspects must be considered by the industry in any drive to introduce new technologies within the context of a producing underground mine. This article presents several operational and support aspects that will evaluate the relevance of alternate energies, with emphasis on hydrogen power systems: operational drivers, commercial supply of technology, site supply system requirements, health and safety, capital and operating costs, mine production, corporate philosophy, and role of government. It is concluded that introduction of alternate energy technology requires a step-wise progression: Applicability to the industry, proof of concept testing, development of generic infrastructure, power systems and regulations, whole system studies and detailed studies of cost and risk versus benefits. The current initiative to apply fuel cells is at the proof of concept stage, entering the generic infrastructure stage.

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. La distribution du Be dans les différentes phases minérales de schistes noirs hydrothermalisés (albitisés) qui contiennent les gisements d’émeraude colombiens, indique que le Be mobilisable se trouve dans les oxyhydroxydes de fer et de manganèse. "The pursuit of concentrator surveying for purposes of metal accounting or process optimization has not yet connected with the well-published realm of geostatistics. The reality of lognormality in time has seldom been discussed. One publication by Krige, 1962, examined such effects for a gold concentrator in South Africa, towards an information system that would provide feedback to the mining and surveying teams on grade control of ore mined.During present studies which are designing and testing a new survey model, called statistical benchmark surveying, it was found that the distributions of feed, concentrate and tailings bear significant residual signs of the parent lognormality in space. The multiple hosting of paymetals in different mineral species complicates the understanding of these distributions. These features have to be recognized and treated in order to perform appropriate quality control on the diagnostic sampling performed in the pursuit of statistical benchmark surveying.It is shown in this paper that the above two features can actually be used to advantage in the diagnosis of continuous periods of operations data ahead of such surveying, including the estimation of recoverable paymetals in flotation tailings from a graphical method.INTRODUCTIONAssessment of Concentrator PerformanceMilling and flotation, sometimes accompanied by gravity separation, are well-established unit processes, which have traditionally been used to treat ore that has been mined. This is because these processes liberate, then separate, the valuable minerals, which contain paymetals, from host gangue. This is often done by a combination of crushing and grinding processes, or autogenous grinding, to liberate the paymetal minerals, followed by gravity separation and/or flotation, to separate these valuable minerals into a concentrate, or several concentrates. These concentrate(s) have a lower bulk than the parent ore from which they are derived. Further, they contain a high percentage of the valuable minerals. Accordingly, they are more economically treated in subsequent beneficiation processes than the ore from which they were produced."

When Dame Nature shook her horn of plenty and distributed her bounties over the face of the earth, she blessed the Pacific coast with many riches, but with these she added many offsetting disadvantages or handicaps, designed, no doubt, to effect a proper balance between wealth and economy. Nowhere is the application of the law of compensation more aptly illustrated than in the matter of fuel and power resources. A glance at the map of the Pacific northwest will show that west of the Coast Range batholith we are bounteously supplied with coal, with timber, with water power, and with tributary resources of oil from California. Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, all contain large resources of coal; Oregon and California to a lesser degree, but, compensating the golden state for its deficiency in this respect, oil was placed in the treasure ,chest. Timber, of wide variety and in lavish quantity, covers the forests from tidewater to mountain slope, and within this protected watershed area flow streams which give the Pacific coast states the largest single share of the potential water-power resources of the country. Something over 40 per cent. of the total estimated horsepower of the United States is to be found in the Pacific states, and British Columbia has 15 per cent. of the total for Canada; but of this total less than 10 per cent. has been developed.

Introduction Research concerning all phases of hoisting practice, but more particularly the causes and prevention of hoisting rope deterioration and the improvement of safety dogs 158 for shaft conveyances, has been carried on intensively for the past three years in the Province of Ontario. Prior to the hoisting accident at the Paymaster mine on February 2nd, 1945, there had been no fatalities in the Province due to a hoisting rope failure. It was probably on this account that little original research on hoisting problems had been undertaken here and that the mining industry had been content to look to British, South African, and United States investigators for new developments in this field. Except for the Paymaster accident this might still be the case since, in any industry, it is apparently necessary for a serious accident to occur before any extensive programme of preventive research is launched. When this accident occurred, the Government of Ontario, with the close co-operation of the Paymaster officials and the mining industry as a whole, took immediate steps to determine the cause. A five-man, non-industry committee, selected from the Faculty of the University of Toronto with Dean C. R. Young as Chairman, was appointed by the Government, and a three-man Committee consisting of R. D. Parker, General Superintendent of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, R. L. Healy, General Manager of Wright Hargreaves Mines, Limited, and R. E. Dye, General Manager of Dome Mines, Limited, with the latter acting as Chairman, was appointed by the Ontario Mining Association.

L'augmentation régulière des règlements environnementaux et de la sécurité au travail deviennent de plus en plus strictes. L'usinage fait partie des opérations industrielles qui peuvent causer des problèmes de santé au travail et sur l'environnement. La plupart des particules de poussières produites pendant toutes les opérations d'usinage à sec ou lubrifie causent des nuisances environnementales graves. Le travail propose étudie l’influence des paramètres de coupe, des alliages et des états des matériaux sur la formation des copeaux et sur la génération de poussière lors de l'usinage à sec. Deux modes d'usinage (le fraisage et le perçage) sont abordés. Une loi reliant la ténacité des matériaux aux émissions de poussières est proposée. Les effets des matériaux et de leurs conditions, ainsi que des procédés d'usinage sur la génération des poussières ont été mis en évidence. Des mécanismes de formation de poussières sont identifiés et reliés à la formation des copeaux.
