The development of a process for removal of iron oxides from ilmenite is outlined whereby the Ti02 content of Western Australian ilmenites can be upgraded from 55 to approximately 90 per cent. In the first stage, the iron oxides are reduced with solid carbon (coal) to metallic iron. Experimental reductions were carried out in crucibles, a fluidized bed, and a small pilot plant rotary kiln. The reduced ilmenite was then agitated in aerated water, in the presenceof catalysts, so that the iron "rusted" away from the ilmenite grains and the precipitated iron oxide was easily separable by decantation.The influence of variables on the rates of reduction and oxidation are discussed. The oxidation rate was examined for both the physical oxygen transfer characteristics and electrochemically by reference to Pourbaix diagrams, in which redox potential is plotted against solution pH.The upgraded ilmenite is expected to be an attractive material for pigment manufacture, and the iron oxide has prospects of being a marketable by-product. The process may possibly be applied to other ores.INTRODUCTIONThere are extensive deposits of ilmenitic beach sands, Le. iron titanium oxides of the general formula FeTi03, 'occurring in the lower south-west portion of Western Australia, and although there has been considerable commercial development, local producers face keen competition on a freight-cost basis. Thus the removal of the unwanted iron oxide constituent would have the double advantage of reducing the freight differential and presenting a more attractivematerial to pigment manufacturers.

During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. It utilises the transistor and associated solid-state devices in its electronics, and hence is light and small.This is the basic feature allowing its installation in a light aircraft. In this, the centennial year of The Institute, it is appropriate that the history of the Institute in New Zealand be recorded. I am indebted to John Dew, compiler of the centenary publication æMining People A Century - Highlights of the First Hundred Years of The AusIMM 1893 - 1993Æ, for many of the early historical references in this paper. In July 1892 the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its annual conference in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, when it was suggested by the delegate from Broken Hill that the time had arrived for the establishment of an Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. Resulting from this meeting at Ballarat, a Provisional Committee was formed at Broken Hill with the object of forming The Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers having the following objectives. To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, the welfare of those employed in those industries by means of meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers with the circulation by means of publications amongst its members and associates the information thus obtained.

With the steady increase of molybdenum demand worldwide and the favorable molybdenum market, many technological innovations on both process and equipment have been developed and applied in many modern molybdenum plants around the world. This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. Many different types of flotation cells are used in modern moly plants, and each type of flotation cell has its own unique advantages suited for particular ore and process conditions. A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

Incorporating an iron ore pelletising plant, a MIDREX'"' Direct Reduction Plant, and a mini mill, the conversion of iron ore fines to high- quality steel slabs in Western Australia is among the lowest cost routes in the world. The cost and availability of iron ore and natural gas, government support, and proximity to the growing Southeast Asian market all contribute to the competitive position of the area. Owing to the lead-time required, this is an ideal time to develop a new project to supply semi-finished steel to Asia for rolling to a finished product. A project contracted now will start up in about three years, when the market should have recovered.

Gold mines produce unique water treatment requirements. This paper focuses on case studies of innovative processes used for treatment of water resulting from gold mining and processing. The case studies include treatment of mine dewatering water for beneficial application from an Australian gold mine, Bendigo Mining, as well as treatment for arsenic removal of tailings water from mining and processing at Goldcorp mines in Canada. Gold mining can often require dewatering to prevent groundwater seeping into and flooding the mine workings. Gold mining and processing often accumulate wastewaters in a tailings dam. The mine water can contain contaminants such as dissolved salts, iron, arsenic, manganese, heavy metals and odorous sulfates. Environmental discharge requirements as well as community needs for water drive mine operators to consider the most appropriate water treatment process. Treatment of gold mine water can require processes including oxidation, pH adjustment, coagulation, flocculation, clarification, further oxidation/adsorption of specific metals such as manganese, filtration, salt reduction utilising reverse osmosis, brine minimisation and other innovative technologies. These processes are discussed through the case studies with examination of the specific treatment process that is required. This paper uses real case studies of gold water treatment processes to explain and examine the technology and the reasons for designing specific processes. The focus is toward explaining innovative processes where the water is used for sustainable environmental discharge or treatment to a quality that can be beneficially used by the local community.

THE successful establishment of iron blast-furnace plants at Newcastle and Lithgow naturally invites attention to the economic utilization of the various products and by-products arising out of the industry.The general similarity in composition between Portland cement and iron blast-furnace slag very early attracted attention both in, the cement and iron-smelting industries. Probably the first use made of blast-furnace slag in the cementindustry was not of an honourable nature-viz, to use an almost worthless and cumbersome by-product as a not readily detectable adulterant in Portland cement, which was at that time very costly to manufacture.The astonishing discovery was made that in many cases the adulterated cement was stronger than the original unadulterated article. It was found that chilled blast-furnace slag introduced in moderate quantity and finely ground with the cement clinkerdid not injure, but usually improved, the quality of the resulting cement. This mode of, manufacture is recognized, especially in Germany, as a legitimate branch of the cement making industry.The use of slag for the manufacture of both slag cement and Portland cement has assumed very large proportions heth in USA and Europe so much so that in the former country plants not well situated and equipped for cheaply making cement from clay and limestone are being forced to close down. Slags from other than iron blast-furnaces, together with some of the latter, are not suitable for cement-making. All slags which disintegrate and fall into powder are wholly unfitted for cementmaking.Those highly charged with mineral oxide compounds...

The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.

Part of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine production is in the process of transitioning from the deep ore zone (DOZ) mine to the deep mill level zone (DMLZ) mine. The DMLZ mine is the next lift in the caving series and lies 500 m below the current DOZ footprint.In order to reduce the need for a very expensive additional ventilation system for the DMLZ mine, it was decided to reconfigure some infrastructure and upgrade the performance of the three existing DOZ mixed flow ventilation fans in situ, reducing the new fans required to two. This was far less costly than providing complete new installations.These fans are installed in individual underground chambers in DOZ mine exhaust drifts and connected to the DMLZ mine exhaust drifts system in 7 m × 7 m airways size, through sets of 6 m diameter by 500 m high raises.The upgrade process involved replacement of motors, fan shafts and bearings. The existing 1600 kW DOZ mixed flow fans are 3500 mm diameter and operate at a speed of 595 rev/min and were originally designed to deliver 390 m3/s at 3.3 kPa. Efficiency optimisation may be required at a later date.The upgraded DMLZ fans are required to deliver 425 m3/s at 3.7 kPa and it was necessary to increase in motor size and speed to 2200 kW at 710 rev/min. In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

Gear and pinion mechanical drive designs to 24 MW or higher for SAG mills of 38 ft. to 42 ft. A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

Apparently there is little inclination on the part of mining engineers to supplant the transmission of power by compressed air with it's formidable rival, electrical transmission. No doubt there are many advantages to be claimed for compressed air that render it parculiary well suited for the conditions which characterise underground work.

The AusIMM/AMIC code for reporting Reserves seeks to improve the calibre of professional reporting on this subject. But have they gone far enough? Should the code appreciate that the degree of reliability of estimates required will vary with the type of mining planned? How does one "confirm continuity" as required by the code? The aim of optimum development drilling is to achieve appropriate ore zone definition for acceptable estimates of reserves and their economic extraction. Can this procedure be in conflict with the code? How does it affect finance decisions?

A consideration of mining ventures and the changes of an environmental nature that occur. The paper is introduced with a general statement claiming recognition that mining ventures are important to human well-being but that these need to be justified against the environmental changes that they bring about. The various factors that need to be considered are cited followed by an historical review of mining activities. The various environmental issues are discussed under three headings; socio-economic, physical and biological, prior to reviewing the world's demand for minerals including fossil fuels. In conclusion guidelines for appraising mining ventures relative to environmental changes that may occur, are given.
