The lead concentration of flotation feed ore slurries is determined using two ?-ray absorption gauges mounted directly on a 6 in. diameter flotation feed pipeline. One gauge is a conventional "density" gauge using CS137. The other is a "lead-sensitive" gauge, which depends on the preferential absorption. by lead of 225 key y-rays resulting from Compton backscatter of CS137 y-rays.Gauge outputs are combined using an analogue computer the output signal of which is directly proportional to the lead concentration of the pulp. The accuracy of measurement of the pulp lead concentration is ± 3·6 per cent for ore slurries with lead concentrations in the range 0'07-0·16 g/c.c. and pulp densities 1.43-1.60 g/c.c.This paper sets out the development of the technique and details are given of the two experiments (1964, 1966) conducted in the plant at North Broken Hill Limited. The installation of the two-gauge system inthe plant during May 1968 is described. Details are given of the calibration technique used and the results obtained.

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. One of these exhibits a columnar structure in the mass in the Waitawheta gorge near the surface workings on Taukani hill, also on the southern bank...

In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

Investigation of an abandoned quarry near Rowland Flat in South Australia identified asbestiform antigorite as the fibrous serpentine mineral mined during the 1940s to 1978 for filler applications, not amphibole asbestos or chrysotile as reported in earlier investigations. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of individual fibres were used to confirm the identification. Chrysotile is widely regarded as the only asbestos mineral in the serpentine group. Further work was done therefore, on the geology and mineralogy of the occurrence, and the health implications were reviewed. A zone of antigorite alteration, with associated talc, is traceable for 750 m along strike of recrystallised dolomitic siltstone within Woolshed Flat Shale of Neoproterozoic age. The antigorite formed, in part, by replacement of prismatic crystals of probable tremolitic amphibole. The deposit is proximal to the Williamstown Fault and the serpentine-talc alteration is possibly due to fluids expelled along the fault during late-stage deformation in the Early Palaeozoic Delamerian Orogeny. The antigorite comprises white to pale green bundles of lath-shaped fibres that occur either as randomly- arranged equant patches after amphibole or as cross-fibre veins, both intimately mixed with calcite. Highly fibrous product was mined from the weathered zone where calcite was leached during weathering. Gentle grinding releases fibres with a high aspect ratio (>10:1) that show a wide range of fibre thickness, including a significant proportion of fibres <0.25 ¦m width. Toxicological studies on fibrous antigorite from Poland and Italy indicate that the carcinogenic potential of this form of serpentine is similar to amphibole asbestos. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques readily distinguish antigorite from chrysotile. Determination of asbestiform habit and confirmation of antigorite mineralogy is most reliably done using electron microscopy, preferably with SAED capability.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Any consistent relation between gas condition and subsequent mining conditions - outbursting or not might be valuable in prediction of outbursts.INSTANTANEOUS OUTBURSTSInstantaneous outbursts (Hargraves, 1958) , are largely unpredictable and unaccountable ejections of coal (up to 5,000 tons) and gas (up to 5,000,000 cu.ft.) from a standing coal face. With the exception of occasional periods, when up to 80% of oxidized ore was treated, the G.M.K. plant treated all sulphide ore until October, 1939. The treatment was, briefly, as follows:The ore was ground to approximately 17% plus 200 mesh Tyler and agitated in cyanide solution, after straking. After agitation, the pulp passed through two stages of counter-current decantation washing in Dorr thickeners and was filtered once, to complete the precyanidation stage.The precyanide filter cake was repulped with flotation circuit solution and floated in a Denver Sub A flotation machine, consisting of twelve cells. The concentrates were roasted, cyanided and filtered four times before disposal to the' dam. The flotation tailings were thickened to conserve water and pumped away to a separate dam.The average results of flotation operations for the six months before October, 1939, are shown in Table 1.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. Important factors in dredge design are the estimation of total head, and the determination of flow in and around suction nozzles and in pipe lines. Total head for the dredge pump is calculated from velocity, static, and friction heads. Flow into suction nozzles depends on whether hydraulic jets or mechanical cutters are used, and on nozzle shape. Design of pipe lines depends on the transportation characteristics of the pulp, skin friction, swirl, and the avoidance of cavitation. Measurement and control of flow is important.INTRODUCTIONEconomic deposits of heavy minerals along the east coast of Australia occur in frontal dunes, which are normally unconsolidated and granular, or in hind dune areas which may contain indurated seams interspersed with loose material. In working frontal dunes, dredging depths are usually shallow since values do not persist for more than a few feet below sea level. However, the controlling factor in dredging the hind dune areas is the level of the water table and suction dredges may be designed to mine to depths of 120 ft, or even more, if necessary.In previous applications of suction dredges in the industry attention was directed primarily towards production and there was only limited research on fundamental techniques. However, with lower grade deposits now forming the major ore reserves, production levels and profit margins will fall unless more efficient dredges are developed.For satisfactory design of dredges it is essential that the total head be accurately estimated and that detailed information of the principles of flow in and around suction nozzles be determined. This paper presents information gained from field experience and laboratory investigation on these aspects.

The sphere of operations of dry crushing has been so much enlarged of late years that the following notes with reference to its advantages and limitations, and also some practical results in connection with the crushing of gold ores will probably be of service to the members of the Institute. Until recently, with one notable exception that of the Mt. Morgan Gold Mine, dry crushing has only been practiced to a very limited extent in Australasia, and elsewhere it might be said to belong to industries other than mining Its sphere of usefulness depends on the fact that the' product is delivered in a dry state without the separation of the finer particles from the coarser to any appreciable extent, thus enabling the following advantages to be achieved with different ores.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

The small scale alluvial gold mining industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is c.irrently the only form of small scale mining carried out in this country. It already contributes significantly to the economy with current production estimated at 2 000-2 500kg per year. Until recently, small scale alluvial gold mining has been confined to simple panning and sluicing of high grade alluvial and colluvial deposits. Traditionally the small scale miner in PNG has only worked gravels with gold grades in excess of 500mg/m3. Grades of this order are required to justify the hard physical labour involved ~n hand operated small scale mining methods. .he introduction of higher throughput technologies such as trommels fed by hydraulic excavators has the effect of altering what constitutes an economically viable deposit. Mechanised techniques allow for the consideration of grades of almost half that level. The potential and opportunities for utilising this type of small scale mechanised mining in PNG are enormous with large areas of ground with gold grades running in excess of 250mg/m3 and often up to 2000mg/m3 throughout the country. An assessment of the current operating economics of this technology in the PNG context is the principal objective of this paper. Small to medium scale mechanised mining can potentially contribute significantly to the PNG economy particularly as it lies within the react-, of many PNG businessmen. Its potential is currently somewhat limited by a general lack of infrastructure and is also constrained by socio-political factors.

The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, it will show what problems can arise when single estimated values are substituted for a distribution of values when evaluating an open pit mine project in the face of uncertainty. Secondly, it will show how the ability to deal with uncertainty and risk in mine project evaluation can have a significant impact on the ownersÆ and stakeholdersÆ investment decision-making. Here a new mine evaluation framework, the integrated valuation/ optimisation framework (named IVOF), is introduced as an alternative tool for mine project evaluation where uncertainty and risk are incorporated in the evaluation process.
