THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. An empirical equation for the prediction of the viscosity of several pure paraffin hydrocarbons and nitrogen is presented. It involves temperature, pressure and six constants of the material, and it applies reliably to both liquids and gases. The equation is similar in form to van der Waal&apos;s equation of state. For the paraffin hydrocarbons methane through r-hexane and nitrogen, an average absolute deviation of 1.9 percent was obtained on 1,006 data points described in the literature by 14 authors. When this equation is extended to complex, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, a correlation was obtained with an average absolute deviation of 9.9 percent. INTRODUCTION Equations describing the flow of gas and liquid through porous media contain the viscosity coefficient of the fluid. If other pertinent variables remain constant, the volume rate of flow is inversely proportional to this coefficient. In dealing with condensate fluids and volatile oils, however, the compositional effects resulting from changing pressure materially affect the viscosity. The effect of compositional changes also may be significant in certain secondary recovery or pressure maintenance processes, notably miscible displacement or gas injection. Early attempts to describe the performance of reservoirs utilized a volumetric material balance method wherein gas and liquid in the reservoir were identified as produced gas and liquid at the surface. This method of analysis proved adequate for reservoirs at moderate temperature and pressure that contained gas with moderately low amounts of condensable materials. The volumetric material balance procedures for "black oil" reservoirs leave much to be desired when applied to condensate and volatile oil reservoirs because phase behavior and compositional changes are relatively more important in these cases. The alternative is a compositional material balance, which in turn, requires a correlation of properties of the reservoir fluid with composition. This paper supplies this correlation in regard to viscosity, for reservoir crude oils. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The literature contains many empirical equations describing the effects of composition, temperature and pressure on the viscosities of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. However, the applicability of a majority of these equations is limited to very low pressures and to a small number of systems. Most of them, when applied to complex hydrocarbon systems, are of little value. The lack of utility of the majority of equations results from the fact that they were developed to show the separate effect of temperature, pressure or composition on viscosity, but not to predict the viscosity as a function of all three variables. And with the few exceptions noted below, they were developed to apply to much simpler systems than hydrocarbon mixtures. Eakin1 developed an equation for the viscosity of pure light hydrocarbons applicable in the gas, liquid and dense fluid regions, and in its most general form is written as µ - µo =A(ebP - e-cpk) The pure component viscosity at atmospheric pressure and temperature T, µo, was calculated using the Sutherland equation: µo = BT3/2/T + S The constants in Eakin&apos;s equation permitted the term e-CPk to become quite small at high densities (above 0.215 gm/cc), and the general equation would simplify to

A recent correlation for multiphase vertical flow by Hagedorn and Brown1,7 has been used to examine the effect of numerous variables such as pipe size, gas-liquid ratio, liquid flow rate, liquid viscosity, liquid surface tension, oil API gravity, water cut, etc., on flowing pressure gradients. Most previous correlations were derived by using a form of the general energy equation which assumed negligible changes in kinetic energy. Under certain flow conditions this can lead to serious errors in predicting pressure traverses. Examples of traverses calculated both with and without the kinetic energy term are included here. The Chew and Connully correlation for calculating changes in viscosity with changing pressure and temperature has been extended so that the effect of a changing viscosity with depth on pressure gradients can also be predicted. Examples illustrating the effect of tubing size show the importance of this correlation in determining pipe sizes for initial well completions. Limitations on production rates in small pipe sizes from excessive friction losses can be predicted with greater accuracy. The combined use of a vertical-flow correlation with a horizontal-flow correlation provides a method for determining the maximum flow rate possible from both flowing and gas-lift wells. Examples are included to illustrate application of the combined use of vertical and horizontal-flow correlations in optimizing production rates and minimizing excessive costs from over injection of gas in gas-lift wells. INTRODUCTION The problems of multiphase vertical and horizontal flow are immediately encountered in any producing well. Fig. 1&apos; shows three stages of production: flow in porous medium, vertical flow and horizontal flow. All three stages affect the production rate from a well. If we are confronted with a particular well and consider only the variables involved in the vertical and horizontal stages of Fig. 1, we should be capable of calculating the flowing bottom-hole pressure necessary to produce a particular flow rate. A change in any of the variables results in a new solution to the problem. Recent approaches in developing horizontal and vertical-flow correlations have improved to the extent that the solution can now be obtained with more confidence than previously. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL FLOW CORRELATIONS Since Poettmann and Carpenter&apos;s&apos; original work in multiphase vertical flow, there have been many additional vertical-flow correlations developed which have greatly improved the accuracy of pressure-loss calculations. DISILICIDE coatings, MeSi2, on refractory metals are usually grown by a solid-state diffusion reaction similar to the parabolic oxidation of metals. Two or more silicide compounds occur in each of the binary silicon-refractory metal systems. When an adequate source of silicon is available during the coating process, the lower silicide compounds are usually not formed.1 However, during service application of the coated refractory metal, continued heating causes further diffusion and growth of the lower silicides. A study of the growth kinetics of the lower silicides in the molybdenum and tungsten binary systems with silicon was previously reported.2 The present study is concerned with the growth kinetics of Ta5Si3 and Cb5Si3, formed as conjugate layers between TaSi2/Ta and CbSi2/Cb diffusion couples, respectively. Diffusion couples consisting of disilicide-coated tantalum and columbium sheet coupons were subjected to diffusion heat treatments, cross-sectioned, and scanned by an electron-microprobe analyzer to determine the relative X-ray intensity profiles. These profiles correspond closely to concentration profiles for the constituents, and were used to identify phases and locate phase boundaries. The analysis of a single specimen after a diffusion-anneal provides only one value for the Me5Si3 phase thickness, corresponding to the time and temperature of the diffusion treatment. Consequently, each isothermal curve showing the rate of accumulation or depletion of silicide phases required several samples with identical diffusion temperatures but different diffusion times. The disilicide coatings were prepared by pyrolizing commercially pure silane in a hydrogen carrier gas. The hydrogen was purified by passage through a palladium membrane. Commercially pure tantalum and columbium sheet metal coupons, 0.005 by $ by 2 in., were used. All of the coated specimens for each system were prepared together in a single group in order to minimize coating variations among individual specimens. During pyrolysis, the brightness temperature was maintained at 1200°C. With suitable flow rates at this temperature, only the disilicides of tantalum and columbium were formed in detectable amounts. Coated specimens were subjected to diffusion an-neals in a tube furnace with automatic proportional control within ±10°C. A H2-Ar mixture, deoxidized and dried over anhydrous magnesium perchlorate, was used to prevent oxidation during the diffusion anneal. Diffusion couples were cross-sectioned, polished and examined with an A.R.L. electron-microprobe X-ray analyzer. Both metal constituents in each specimen were simultaneously scanned using a 1-p beam spot size and either 1- or 2-µ steps. Analyses were performed using the Ka radiation of columbium and silicon, and the La, radiation of tantalum. For all specimens, an acceleration voltage of 30 kv was used, and integration was made against the specimen current. LiF and A DP monochrometers were used to isolate characteristic radiations. Three or more traverses were made on each specimen. The intensity scales were adjusted using the constituent metals and standard samples of the silicide compounds which had been verified by X-ray diffraction. The relative intensity profiles were used directly, in conjunction with the standard samples, to identify compounds and phase boundaries. The stoichiometries differ considerably between the silicide compounds in both systems, and the homogeneity range for these silicide compounds is narrow. These characteristics result in marked differences in relative intensities of the fluorescing elements—differences which permit ready identification of phases and phase boundaries. Will Wright said that the need for such an organization was evident, and a resolution was passed asking the incoming President to appoint a committee to investigate cooperation with that body, of which Mr. Albala is executive secretary.

The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, III., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines6 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. The Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River is part of a vast geologic and hydrologic province. The abundance of water available is largely responsible for the agricultural history of the area and is perhaps the key factor in the rapidly accelerating trend toward industrialization. The multiple artesian aquifer systems that underlie the region and the alluvial aquifer along the Mississippi River are virtually undeveloped sources of fresh water in that they are yielding only a fraction of the water available. The potential yield of the 12 aquifer systems is estimated to be about 25,000 mgd (million gpd) of which only about 600 mgd is presently being withdrawn. The amount of water in storage in these systems is about 1600 trillion gal. Ground water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 ppm is generally available at depths of less than 1000 ft, and water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 1000 ppm is available in some places to depths of more than 3000 ft. Iron is the most common troublesome chemical constituent in the ground water. Water in varying amounts is also available from streams within the region. The amount of water which originates within the region and which leaves it as streamflow during a year averages about 50 million acre-ft (about 45,000 mgd). An additional 375 million acre-ft (about 340,000 mgd), which originated outside the region, leaves the region as streamflow during an average year. Some streams have considerable flow during periods of no precipitation and the water during these periods generally has a low dissolved-solids content. Large quantities of water from streams and waterbearing sands (aquifers) are available in the Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River. Most of the region is underlain by aquifer systems that will yield large quantities of water to wells, making ground water the most readily available source of fresh water. About 90% of the water used in the region is obtained from wells. Streams have been used primarily to dispose of, and dilute, wastes that have been dumped into them. The Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, and the lower parts of the Tombigee and Yazoo rivers also serve as a means of transportation. This nominally water-rich region receives from 48 to 56 in. of precipitation in average years and is crossed by several large rivers. The largest, the Mississippi River, is the western boundary of the region discussed in this paper. The economy of the region is basically agricultural, but industry has become increasingly important since World War 11. The diversification and mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a surplus of manpower, most of which is being absorbed by the expansion of industry. Further industrial expansion probably will occur because of the available manpower, natural resources and economical transportation. Increasing demands on available water supplies will be made and the future economic growth of the region will be largely dependent upon wise utilization and management of the water resources.

AFTER the war years, great activity has been shown in geophysical exploration for ore. The appreciation by mining and government geologists of geophysical techniques and results is largely responsible for the popularity of these methods. In Canada, plans are being made to study, by geophysical methods, the structure of a portion of the Pre-Cambrian shield in the hope that such studies will not only give a clearer picture of the geology, but will be of direct aid to the mining companies when selecting areas for detailed prospecting. Engineers are frequently faced with the problem of having to predict oil recovery from a solution gas drive reservoir in the early life of a field. This is often the time when actual laboratory or field-derived gas-oil permeability (kg/k0) data are not yet available. Although excellent collections of k0/k0 data for various types of rocks may be found in the literature,1,2,3 a need exists for a more detailed correlation of k0/k0 data with core properties such as porosity, permeability, clay content or pore-size distribution. It is the purpose of this article to present this type of correlation for sandstone material. The correlation is based on laboratory tests performed on over 300 core samples from 19 reservoirs in the United States and Canada. EXPERIMENTAL Cores were analyzed by routine procedures, using samples of conventional size (7/8-in. diameter, 7/8-in long) cut parallel to the bedding planes. Air permeability was measured at 1.67 atm mean pressure in a Hassler-type apparatus. Porosity was determined with the aid of a Ruska bulk volume meter and a Boyle&apos;s Law rock volume meter, An evaporation method&apos; was used to evaluate irreducible water saturations. Core samples were saturated with 25,000 ppm NaCl brine. The brine was reduced to the irreducible saturation, and the remainder of the pore space was filled with kerosene. This was followed by multiphase flow tests using the so-called "dispersed feed" technique.5 n this technique, gas and oil (kerosene and kerosene-saturated air) were dispersed with the aid of a porous Alun-durn feed head, the face of which contained a waffle-shaped system of Lucite-lined grooves. Oil entered the back side of the feed head and emerged at the raised areas of the front face. Gas was introduced directly into the system of grooves at the front face. The gas-oil mixture then entered the test core which was kept in capillary contact with the feed head. Permeabilities were determined from rate and pressure measurements and saturations from weights. All determinations were performed at equilibrium or steady-state conditions. Pore-size distributions were determined on selected samples by a mercury injection technique.6 GENERAL CORRELATIVE TRENDS When examining data from a given reservoir, it was noted that k0/k0 vs saturation curves became generally less steep as specific air permeability increased, a development that has a favorable effect on oil displacement efficiency by solution gas drive. This trend has also been reported by others in the literature.&apos; An effect of porosity on k0/k0 data was also noted. This effect was not generally discernible in a study of relative permeability data for a given reservoir but became apparent when data for sandstone reservoirs of similar lithology but differing average porosity were compared. For instance, in a comparison of argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstones from 11 reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 14 to 28 per cent, a definite trend was noted, indicating that for a given permeability k0/k0 curves became less favorable (i.e., steeper) as porosity increased. A similar trend was observed for a group of comparatively clean sandstones from five reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 15 to 21 per cent. For a given permeability and porosity, comparatively clean sandstones gave more favorable k0/k0 curves than argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstone or chert reservoirs. The laboratory studies also showed that least favorable k0/k0 curves were exhibited by shaly sandstone, conglomerate, and sandstone containing carbon inclusions. Barite, although not a glamour mineral and probably little known to many of those in the mining business, is produced in the US. in very respectable quantities and is an important factor in the mineral economy of this country. The scope of the various uses of this mineral is perhaps one of the most misunderstood things about it, for it is surprising how many of those with a casual knowledge of the subject speak of its primary utilization in terms of paint pigments and barium chemicals. The life blood of barite utilization, however, is the petroleum industry by virtue of its dependence on this high specific gravity, inert mineral as the weighting material in its drilling fluids. From 80 to 85% of barite usage in the U. S. is accounted for in this manner-in fact, its role in oil well drilling is the only excuse for some of the large-scale barite production facilities which have been developed. Other uses are important and widely varied, but comparatively they are of small scale. They include fine crushed barite of low iron content as a component in glass manufacture, barite as a source material for manufacture of barium chemicals, finely divided barite as a component of some rubbers and ground, bleached barite in pigments. The formerly substantial use of barite in lithopone, however, has declined markedly because of replacement of lithopone by titanium pigments

The perforating of multiple tubingless completions, in which two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, presents two basic problems. First, good completion practices require an eficient perforator that leaves no debris to interfere with subsequent completion operations. Second, and of more complicated nature, a system is needed for controlling the direction of fire so that adjacent strings are not damaged. Development of of a 2-in. OD, steel retrievable, shnped-charge gun has solved the first problem. The second was resolved through development of three different devices to provide directional perforating for the two types of completion methods being employed today. These include a mechanical orienting device and two self-orienting radiation devices. Conceivably, the latter methods could be adapted to the directional perforating (of .upper zones) of conventional dual and triple completions without removing production tubing and packers. INTRODUCTION The recent trend to multiple tubingless completions,&apos; wherein two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, has presented two basic perforating problems. The first problem to be overcome was the design of a gun that would result in efficient perforations without causing debris to bridge in these small-diameter casings. The second problem was, of course, to devise a system for controlling the direction of fire such that adjacent strings would not be damaged. The problem of gun debris in slim-casing completions has been well defined in the numerous 27/8-in. single tubingless completions which have been effected during recent years with the expendable-type perforators. Failure of expendable-gun debris to settle out properly, even with good gun break-up, has resulted in bridging inside these small-diameter casings. This, in turn, has interfered with completion and re-conditioning operations. The past two years have clearly shown, in fact, that debris problems are not confined to this small range of casing with most designs of expendable-type guns. A high incidence of bridging has even been reported in 4%-in. OD casing. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions has entailed, therefore, the development of a completely debris-free gun of adequate performance, as well as the necessary devices to provide positive directional perforating in the two completion methods presently being employed. THE GUN —DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS The design of a shaped-charge gun for slim-casing perforating has presented a maze of interrelated prob-lems. Since the primary specification has been leveled at efficient charge performance with complete elimination of gun debris, it has been necessary to develop a retrievable steel-carrier gun of tubular construction to house the charges. The carrier must be retrievable through 2.29-in. API pump-seating nipples which are usually installed in 2 7/8-in. strings. To provide for recovery of the gun from the well, swelling of the carrier on firing must be carefully controlled. Control of swelling automatically means control of explosive weight in the shaped charge which, in turn, influences charge performance. Carrier swelling also depends upon the confinement pressure at the level being perforated, which imposes a hydrostatic pressure-depth limitation. Burr interference on the wall of the carrier, resulting from passage of the jet through the carrier wall, must be eliminated by suitable design. Clearly then, a satisfactory shaped-charge gun design for slim-casing operations represents a fine balance between carrier swelling, hydrostatic pressure, explosive weight and charge performance. Additionally, to lend itself to directional perforating, the gun design must provide a positive locking mechanism for individual charges within the gun carrier. FOR the first time other than on occasion of war the people of the United States are experiencing full-scale participation in world affairs. Public concern has seldom been so involved with conditions and events beyond our own continental limits. Our interest is not wholly of recent origin. Over the years the activity of the United States as a world power and an important trading nation brought about the widening of our political interests and the progressive interrelation of our economy with that of the rest of the world. Some may see in our present phase of world-wide activity the natural consequence of our continued growth. Such observers must also be aware that within recent years our importance in world affairs has been considerably increased. For within the space of an extremely short period events have occurred that have literally jet-propelled the United States into the role of a leading participant in the conduct of world affairs. Little of the choice of this role was left to us. The decline of power in western Europe, the ascendancy between the Elbe and the Pacific shore of an obviously antagonistic force, our earnest endeavor to secure international control of atomic energy, the necessity of providing relief and rehabilitation to war-ravaged areas, and the police work that must be done in occupied territories are problems which have risen in great measure without our help-but they cannot be solved without it.

THE oxidation resistance of chromium and Fe-Cr alloys is increased by small additions of yttrium or other rare earth metals.1,2 In addition, the presence of the additives increases the resistance of these alloys to spalling of the external oxide above 1000°C. This ability to prevent spalling appears to be related to the formation of an internal oxide in alloys containing yttrium or the other rare earth metals. The internal oxide is found in the form of a filamentary growth concentrated in the grain boundaries of the unoxidized metal. In alloys containing yttrium this internal oxide was found to be either Y2O3 Or YCrO3.&apos; In an earlier report,&apos; the growth of the external oxide was found to be controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. Thermal balance studies were used to establish the kinetics of external oxide formation. In this related study the rate of growth of the internal filamentary oxide has also been studied. The results obtained indicate that the growth of the internal oxide is also diffusion controlled. Internal oxidation appears to occur in at least two ways. Using copper alloys containing small amounts of silicon, Rhines 3 found that between 600" and 1000oC a subscale was formed which consisted of particles of silica dispersed in the metallic matrix. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation as suggested by Rhines are: 1) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, 2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, 3) the possibility of the formation by the alloying element of an oxide more stable than the oxide of the host metal, and 4) a relatively low solubility of this oxide in the metal. These conditions are fulfilled for a number of other copper alloys.3-5 Furthermore, the relationship between the depth to which the internal oxide is formed and the oxidation time follows the simple parabolic law.6 The activation energy for copper containing small amounts of silicon, germanium, iron, or manganese as calculated from Rhines data6 is about 48 kcal per mole. In some cases the internal oxide is found segregated at the grain boundaries, especially near the the surface. Observations of this type of oxide formation have been reported by stead,7 Rhines,* and Lustman. Evans" cites these cases as examples of the simultaneous movement of anions and cations during oxidation. Furthermore, Evans states that the presence of a minor constituent with a high
