The transition temperatures of 0.01 to 0.02 pct carbon steels are shown to be strongly influenced by cooling rate in the a range, quenching from A, causing a very low transition temperature even after strain aging. In a titanium-stabilized steel and in a steel with 0.05 pct C this effect is absent. NORMAL mild structural steels usually show a structure of more or less pure ferrite, as a matrix, in which cementite grains or pearlite are embedded. Of these components, ferrite is by far the most interesting one as far as ductility and brittle (cleavage) fracture are concerned. Obviously, pear-lite and carbide are by no means necessary for a cleavage crack to nucleate and grow in the ferrite, as steels with a very low carbon content (Armco iron with 0.02 pct C) have an impact transition temperature just as high as semikilled steels with 0.26 pct C.1 Although it has been argued that a very embrittling effect is to be expected from cementite, precipitated as continuous films along the ferrite grain boundaries,'. " the micrographic evidence for a direct causal connection between the brittleness and these films does not seem to be very convincing. On the other hand, it has been stated that cementite particles in ferrite are able to stop ferrite cracks.4,5 In any case, the properties of the ferrite itself seem to be of overwhelming importance to the ductility of steels, justifying a thorough study of steels consisting of ferrite of different compositions, but principally free from pearlite, which means a carbon content below 0.02 pct. Such investigations have been carried out using the impact transition temperature as a criterion of the tendency to brittle fracture and have given some rather unexpected results. One result is the profound influence of carbon on the transition temperature of the steel in normalized condition. If the carbon content is reduced from 0.02 to 0.015 pct and below, a nearly discontinuous decrease in transition temperature appears even with high percentages of such elements as phosphorus and nitrogen present. The Hidden Dome gas field, situated in Washakie County, Wyoming, was discovered Sept. 26, 1917. Subsequently five additional gas wells were completed and a large reserve was developed. For a number of years this field completely supplied the domestic market at Basin and Greybull, as well as the refinery at the latter town, and it is still supplying gas in small amounts to this market. Production is obtained from the sands of the Frontier formation at depths ranging from 1000 to 1500 ft. The original rock pressure was 725 Ib. and initial production ranged from 4,000,000 to 28,000,000 cu. ft. per day per well. Porosity of the sand, determined from the size of the productive area and the amount of gas recovered, is over 18 per cent. Area and Management It is estimated that the productive area is about 640 acres. Its outline is indicated on Fig. 5, on which are also shown the locations of holes drilled on the structure and the area of unit operation. The unit area is owned by the Ohio Oil Co. and development and operation have been by this company. No productive well has been completed outside this area. The entire area was Government land filed on under the placer mining law. Results of Unit Operation With six producing wells, or an average of one to each 160 acres, the pool is completely developed. Location of the wells was made with respect to structural conditions plus the requirement that at least one well be drilled on each 160-acre placer claim. Perhaps a somewhat more uniform spacing of the wells might have been accomplished and one well eliminated, but it must be borne in mind that the holes, on account of their shallow depth, were not expensive and that the object was to develop as reliable a reserve as possible. There is no cause to suspect that these holes have not adequately drained the reservoir and there is every reason to think that any additional wells, which might have been drilled under diversified ownership and operation, would have been an economic waste. THE first session was held in the rooms of the American Philosophical Society, on Tuesday evening, February 26th. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, called the meeting to order, and after a few introductory remarks concerning the importance of theoretical and speculative science, which often involves principles of the highest economic value, and, more than all that, serves to enlarge our conceptions of the universe, and ennoble us, by the cultivation which it affords to our most exalted faculties, proceeded to discuss some points in the chemistry of the atmosphere. It is known that there is in the crust of the earth a great amount of oxidized carbon, not only in the shape of coal, but also in the graphite or plumbago of the crystalline rocks, in the various bituminous shales or pyroschists, which are found in all succeeding rock-formations, and also in the forms of bitumen and petroleum. All the analogies of nature lead us to conclude that these various carbonaceous substances have had an organic origin, and have been generated by the deoxidation of carbonic acid, a process effected by the growing plant, and attended with the liberation of oxygen. He showed that the carbon of a layer of coal covering the whole earth's surface to the thickness of one meter, would, in its production from carbonic dioxide, liberate an amount of oxygen equal to that now present in our atmosphere. But bituminous coal contains also a large amount of hydrogen, derived from the deoxidation of water, which implies the liberation of a farther portion of oxygen. The amount from this latter source would equal, for the various coals and asphalts, from one-eighth to one-fourth, and, for the petroleums, one-half of that set free in the deoxidation of the carbon which these hydrocarbonaceous bodies contain. From what we know of the composition of the stratified rocks, it is probable that they include an amount of deoxidized carbon and hydrogen many times greater than that contained in a layer of coal one meter in thickness, and, consequently, that the disengaged oxygen in past ages must have far exceeded that now present in our atmosphere. MORE than one-third of all Canada is embraced in the federal domain known as the Northwest Territories. Its most northern point, Cape Columbia, on Ellesmere Island, is only 500 mi. from the Pole. It includes parts of the main physiographic divisions of the North American continent. In the West there is a strip of 30.000 sq. mi. lying in the Cordilleran region, where peaks in the Mackenzie Mountains rise as high as 8500 ft. East of this strip and extending roughly to a line through Great Bear and Great Slave lakes to the Arctic coast is a section of the interior plains. This section, known as the Mackenzie Lowlands, contains the great artery, the most striking feature of the Northwest Territories-the Mackenzie and Slave river waterway impressive in its width, almost two miles in places, and in it's navigability for 1357 miles without obstruction to the sea. Adjoining the Mackenzie Lowlands on the East is the greater portion of the mainland of the Territories, which, as well as a large share of the island area, is in the Canadian Shield.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No. 4 mine that requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place. High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 ft) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610-m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 305 mm (12 in.) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas that endanger men and equipment. To control this, rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works toward the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition using a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDM-15 bolting machine. More than 120 km (75 miles) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43% to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam portions of No. 4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method using bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people. Total drilling supply costs are about 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts:

A STUDY of the kinetics of embrittlement in engineering alloy steels during tempering has indicated that the presence of alloying elements may define two distinct regions of embrittlement: 1) at 800° to 1000 °F, termed low temperature embrittle-ment, and 2) in the temperature range 1150 ° to 1250°F, termed high temperature embrittlement.13 It has been suggested that embrittlement in each region may be due to a different mechanism. At intermediate temperatures and extended times the course of embrittlement may be influenced by the superposition of the embrittlement occurring in the two regions. Furthermore, low temperature embrittlement has been known to decrease as the temperature is raised slightly above the maximum embrittlement range.' Jaffe and BuffumV ave presented data for a Ni-Cr steel illustrating the removal of the em-brittlement occurring at 932°F by reheating to 1250°F for an hour. Their data further shows that embrittlement proceeds continuously with increased time at 1250°F, becoming pronounced at long times. They interpreted this behavior as a retrogression phenomenon involving the solution of the small nuclei of precipitate formed at 932°F as the temperature was increased, and reprecipitation of larger nuclei stable at 1250°F, with the reoccurrence of embrittlement. It appears desirable to reconsider this explanation in the light of the two regions of embrittlement proposed by the authors1 for some alloy steels. In addition, it appears desirable to determine any influence of a preconditioning treatment in each temperature range upon subsequent development of low and high temperature embrittlement. It is thus the object of this investigation to study the characteristics of the two modes of embrittlement proposed in a commercial Ni-Cr alloy steel (AISI 3140). Experimental Details Material—The material used in this investigation was commercial AISI 3140 steel bar stock, received as % in. hot-rolled rounds. The steel analysis was as follows (in percentages): C, 0.39; Mn, 0.79; Si, 0.30; S, 0.028; P, 0.015; Ni, 1.26; and Cr, 0.77. The prevent paper contains a method which combines the material balance equation' with the water influx equation' to obtain reliable values for the active oil originally in place and a quantitative evaluation of the cumulative water influx. The method is illustrated by an application to a reservoir without original gas cap. In the absence of an original gas cap. results may be obtained using only field production and pressure data, PVT analyses. and a minimum of subsurface information. CHARACTERISTICS OF RESERVOIR AND RESERVOIR FLUIDS Production in the field under review is obtained from the top of the Wilcox formation of Eocene age, at a depth of approximately 8,100 ft subsea. The structural map, Fig. 1, shows that the accumulation, half elliptical in shape with the long axis in east-west direction, is trapped to the north and on the upthrown side of a normal fault. A number of east-west faults with additional minor faulting in random directions are found in the general area, and seismic information and production performance indicate in this particular case the existence of a second fault a short distance downdip, with a strike more or less parallel to the fault controlling the accumulation. It is estimated that 1,830 acres were originally underlain by oil and that the maximum thickness of the original oil column, about 37 ft, was only slightly greater than the maximum thickness of the oil-bearing sand. Maximum net sand thickness was estimated at approximately 26 ft. From logging and subsurface information the gross sand volume has been placed at 37.400 acre-ft. which reduces to about 27,500 acre-ft after probable non-productive intervals have been deducted. B RITISH COLUMBIA in its mining activities is going ahead by leaps and bounds both in development and production. Mineral production for 1925 was $61,492,242 in value as compared to $48,704,- 604 in 1924, or an increase of about 26.2 per cent. This is a new record. It is the first time in the history of mining in British Columbia that we have gone over the fifty million mark. But we have got in the habit of making new records. The year 1924, with its mineral production of almost forty-nine million was a new record. And I am confident that when the mining history of 1926 is written it will be found that we have established yet another new record and that we can report another 25 per cent increase over 1925. What is the explanation? It is not only that the world is settling down, and settling up, after the war. It is not only that in the rebuilding, the refashioning in which all nations are busily engaged, the metals that come from our mines are needed. More than anything else, at least as far as we are concerned, it is because British Columbia has the resources and the fact that the province has been fortunate in recent years in finding men with the enterprise and the vision required to push ahead the labor of their development. From the ranks of our own people in Canada we have prospectors who have faith, energy and requisite knowledge. They are combing our hills season after season and they are of the type of manhood that does not know the meaning of the word quit. More and more these men are learning the importance of the guidance furnished by geological reports, and to an ever increasing extent such reports, thanks to the valuable work of the Canadian Geological Survey, covering areas little known to man, are made available to them-but it is recognized that in the opening up of our Province, containing within itself 372,000 square miles, it is essential that we should have the cooperation of our cousins on this side of the line as well as of our fellow citizens of the Dominion and of the Mother Country.

The oil and gas industry in Missouri in 1934 continued along the same lines that have marked the previous years. One new gas pool has been opened, others have been extended and in one oil pool a 25-bbl. well was completed. Missouri has no laws or regulations relating to drilling or the filing of well logs and the Geological Survey depends on its own scouting activities to obtain information. The data herein have been taken largely from a paper by the author recently published in the 58th Biennial Report of the State Geologist of Missouri. That report is available on application to H. A. Buehler, State Geologist, Rolla, Missouri, accompanied by ten cents in stamps, the amount of the postage. The preliminary figures, subject to revision, indicate that before the end of December, 1932, there were 2495 completions, of which 320 were oil wells, 1139 were gas wells and 1036 were dry. Over half of the oil wells were drilled in the Richards-Stotesbury area of Vernon County and were pumped for only a short period of time. During the period 1933-34 there were 201 completions, of which 10 were oil wells with an initial daily capacity of 100 bbl., 90 were gas wells, with an open flow of 26,578,256 cu. ft., and 101 were dry. The most active areas in drilling for gas in 1934 were the Marota area, sec. 17, T.49N., R.32W., Jackson County, the Grandview area in T.47N., R.33W., Jackson County, and the Plattsburg area in Clinton County. The Knoche oil pool in sec. 16, T.46N., R.33W., Cass County, was the scene of the only important oil development. In the Marota pool nine wells were completed to the Squirrel sand, with a combined open flow of about 5,000,000 cu. ft. The pool is on a small symmetrical dome with a closure of at least 30 ft. The average depth of the wells is 450 ft. The Squirrel sand (Upper Cherokee, Pennsylvanian) had a thickness of 94 ft. in a near-by dry hole, but only the upper 30 or 40 ft. is drilled in the producing wells. The largest well

THE indexing of a field-ion micrograph is in many cases similar to the indexing of the poles of a stereo-graphic projection.* If one has a standard projection as a guide, the task of indexing is relatively simple. In this way, field-ion micrographs of bcc and fcc wires have been oriented from projections available in most any text on X-ray diffraction. These books always illustrate the projections for the bcc and fcc structures and even for a particular hcp structure. There is no "standard" hcp projection because the angles between planes depend on the c/o ratio of the unit cell. In order to index field-ion micrographs of hcp metals, one must compute the angles between various planes—a rather laborious task. In recent work,, we have had to identify the structure and index the orientation of field-ion micrographs of the compounds WC and W,C. To overcome the problem of computing angles by hand or calculator, a program was written in Fortran lV for use on the IBM 360, Model 50 which will compute all angles between planeswith indices (hlklll) and (17,k,l2) in the range from (447) to (444) for any given c/o ratio. The program, which is more specific than that of Camp and clum, was so written as to take advantage of the multiplicity of the hexagonal system, and, for the limits defined above, only 26,649 values out of a possible 265,721 values had to be computed. This is a 90 pct saving in time (and cost) and was accomplished in the following way. Because the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal system are defined such that: a = b * c [1] the I index does not enter into the multiplicity (i.e., it cannot be transposed with the h or k indices), and all possible values of h and I, from 4 to 4 must be used—a total of eighty-one combinations. The index h2 varies the most—it must assume values from - Ill,: to 3Ihl. The indices kl and k2 are always equal and vary

The grades of commercial steel produced in large quantities can be divided into two general types from the standpoint of ingot structure— killed and rimmed. Killed steel covers a wide variety with carbon contents throughout the range of the steel portion of the iron-carbon diagram, and is the kind usually used in the production of alloy steels. Rimmed steel is normally associated with carbon ranges under 0.30 per cent, and is not yet used to a large extent in alloy practice, except for copper-bearing steels. The fundamental differences in the ingots made from these two types of steel can be seen most easily in Figs. 1 to 7. In the rimmed ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7 there are two lines of blowholes approximately parallel to the sides and coming together at the top and at the bottom of the ingot. In the killed ingots shown in Figs. 1 to 4 these blowholes arc not present. Also, the rimmed ingot has no well defined pipe, as compared to the deep pipe on the killed ingots, and there are numerous primary blowholes in the lower portion of the rimmed ingot perpendicular to the surface and close to it, while on the killed ingot there are no blowholes of this type in the ingot shown in Fig. 1 and very small ones close to the surface in the lower part of the ingot shown in Figs. 2 to 4. With respect to the presence of pipe and the primary blowholes, the structure may vary considerably in both rimmed and killed ingots, therefore these cannot be considered as fundamental structural characteristics differentiating the two types of steel. The primary blowholes in rimmed ingots may be much less pronounced than those in the ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7—as, for example, in "ingot iron," which is entirely free from them. 1750 to 1850: The scene shifts westward across the Alleghenys to the young town of Pittsburgh; charcoal gives way to mineral coal as furnaces grow larger and the blast is heated; above all, Pennsylvania iron is adding strength to the new Nation and building an empire in the West. TWO names are inseparably associated with the Pittsburgh iron industry-those of George Anschutz and John Hayden. The iron ore deposits of southeastern Pennsylvania were found and developed early in the 18th century, and several forges and furnaces were built and operated. It was only after the revolution that the iron men crossed the Susquehanna River, built furnaces in the neighborhood of ore deposits of Franklin County, then along the Juniata River and its valley. Juniata Iron found a ready market in the Pittsburgh area. However, difficulty in transporting it across the Allegheny Mountains induced iron mas¬ters to seek ore and plant locations in the Pittsburgh district. One of the first to reach this area was George Anschutz, who migrated to America in 1789 at the age of 36, reaching Pittsburgh in the fall of 1790. Anschutz immediately set out to organize an iron company in Pittsburgh, and was able to interest some residents in his project. After being informed of an iron ore deposit located only three miles out of town (on the site of the present 26th St. and the Allegheny River) he decided to build there his blast furnace and foundry plant. Total cost of the installation was $300. When the furnace was put in operation, Anschutz, now known as Red George, found that the ore deposit was only an insignificant one and would last no more than a few weeks. A new deposit was found on Roaring Run, in the southeastern corner of Armstrong County. Anschutz transported some of this ore to the mouth of Two Mile Run, where it was loaded on horse wagons and transported to the furnace. In this way, he operated off and on for several months, until the furnace was blown out in 1794. After working for a year as plant manager for John Probst at Langhorntown, he built the Hunting-

The results of a preliminary study of 113 ternary titanium-base alloys are described. The compositions investigated were as follows: 1. Ternary titanium-carbon alloys containing copper, silicon, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, or cobalt. 2. Ternary titanium-nitrogen alloys containing chromium. 3. Ternary titanium-chromium alloys containing additions of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, or nickel. 4. Ternary titanium-manganese alloys containing additions of silicon, chromium, tungsten, or iron. Tensile properties, minimum bend radii, hardnesses, response to heat treatment and aging treatment, and phase relationships for these alloys were determined. THIS is the second in a series of papers describing some of the results of the exploratory work on titanium alloys being conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The work with the binary alloy systems has been described in a previous publication.' This paper describes ternary titanium-base alloys as follows: 1. Ternary titanium-carbon alloys containing copper, silicon, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, or cobalt. 2. Ternary titanium-nitrogen alloys containing chromium. 3. Ternary titanium-manganese alloys containing additions of silicon, chromium, tungsten, or iron. As the preparation and fabrication of the 0.5-Ib experimental titanium alloy ingots to 14-ga sheet, as well as the methods of testing used in this work, have been described in the first paper of this series, Titanium Binary Alloys, no further discussion of these techniques will be given. Ternary Alloys Containing Carbon The following alloys of titanium, containing carbon and one other metal, were investigated: 1. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2.5, and 5 pct copper. 2. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2, and 3 pct silicon. 3. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2.5, and 5 pct vanadium. 4. 0.25 pct carbon; 2.5, 3.5, 5, 10, and 15 pct chromium. 5. 0.5 pct carbon; 2.5, 3.5, and 5 pct chromium. 6. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 1.75, 2.5, 3.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 pct manganese. 7. 0.5 pct carbon; 1.75, 2.5, 3.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 pct manganese. 8. 0.25 pct carbon; 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 pct iron. 9. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2, and 3 pct cobalt.

The orebodies of the Hecla mine are from 3 to 40 ft. wide, dip not less than 70°, and in most cases are nearly vertical. The Hecla and Intermediate orebodies are generally associated with a lamprophyric dike, usually about 2 ft. wide, but which attains a maximum width of 7 ft. The ore appears on either or both sides of the dike. The country rock is Burke quartzite with no definite walls and a tendency for nearly horizontal, but irregular, quartz stringers to run from the lode into the walls. This latter condition prevails almost entirely in the hanging wall, causing a natural tendency for portions of the wall to "offset" and resulting in an extremely heavy side pressure. The fact that there are no definite walls causes a great variation in the width of the stopes, as stringers will run into the walls for irregular distances. The ore occurs as galena in varying widths and grades. It is often necessary to mine a face having a " horse"' of waste between two stringers of ore. This block of waste might be 6 or 7 ft. wide but with the Hecla method it is necessary to mine the entire face. In this case an effort is made only to shatter the waste, allowing for easy sorting underground. The Hecla mine requires a flexible system allowing for the extraction of ore from varying widths, with the necessity of close filling to give the needed protection from side weight. About 15' per cent. of the material broken in the face is sorted as waste, either at the face of stope, or in the sorting plant. Shafts, Drifts and Crosscuts The outside dimensions of the shaft are 19 ft. 4 in. by 7 ft. 2 in. The shaft consists of three working compartments, two for the hoisting of ore and one for auxiliary work. The working compartments are 5 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 4 in. inside measurement. The rest of the shaft is used for pump column, electric cables, and ladderway. (See Fig. 6 for framing of timbers.) The shaft is about 700 It. from the orebody for topographical reasons. Solid formation was not reached in shaft for 80 ft. Timbers in this section became alternately wet and dry on account of seasonal changes

DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP'';4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. Limited experimental data and a critical review of the literature are given to indicate that the true equilibrium distribution of manganese between carbon-saturated iron and blast-furnace type slags has not yet been satisfactorily established as a function of the composition, temperature, and pressure of the system. THE distribution of manganese between carbon-saturated iron and blast-furnace type slags has been studied by a number of investigators.1-7 Generalization of the results of these works indicates that the weight percent distribution ratio, (%Mno)/[%Mn], decreases with increasing temperature and slag basicity, in accord with thermodynamic data and practical observation. However, where comparisons among these studies can be made for similar slag compositions and temperatures, the reported values of the manganese distribution ratio are discordant. The variations are attributed to failure of the experimenters to bring their systems completely to equilibrium with graphite and CO at 1 atm, as judged by departures from silicon equilibrium. Even in the most recent work,5-7 this problem was recognized but the authors made the questionable assumption that equilibrium could prevail for manganese distribution even though other reactions were still in progress. Manganese equilibrium values for three particular slag compositions were required incidental to a kinetic study8 and were determined experimentally. Special pains were taken to approach concurrent equilibrium with respect to silicon. Although the results were not completely definitive, they indicate that the true manganese equilibrium distribution ratios are lower than have heretofore been reported. The data are presented together with a brief commentary on the literature to suggest the need for further work in this area. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Equilibrium runs were carried out in a stationary, induction-heated graphite crucible closed by a graphite lid and flushed continuously by a slow flow of carbon monoxide at 1 atm pressure. Temperature was controlled manually within ±3 deg C with the aid of immersed thermocouples in mullite tubes protected against slag attack by graphite sleeves. The desired temperature was established by a calibrated Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and control was then maintained using a more stable W-Mo couple. Runs were made at 1500º and 1575ºC for durations of 7.5 to 10.5 hr. The charges were calculated to yield 400 g of metal and 100 g of slag. The primary slag compositions and designation numbers were as follows:
