PERHAPS the most extraordinary thing about business, the trade and production of the country as a whole, is its amazing continuity and growth, its momentum and energy. It goes on year after year, growing steadily, almost without breaks, in spite of every kind of disturbance. We have been grossly deceived into the idea that business is highly variable. We have taken a few things like pig iron, and the like, constructional activity broadly, and imagined that these are a trustworthy measure of trade. Actually they are the worst that we could find. They do not apply to more than 10 per cent or, at the most, possibly 15 per cent of the total of the country's industrial activity. The other 85 or 90 per cent, or even more, goes on growing surely and steadily just like the growth of population and the steady advance in technique, invention, discovery, and improved methods of production Let me give you what seems to me one of the most remarkable examples of this amazing momentum and regularity. You know that 90 per cent or more of the business of the country is done 'by means of checks. About seven-eighths of the total of all checks drawn are reported regularly every week in the newspapers. Let us follow these reports from week to week, just as they come, and plot them up against the correspond- ing weeks of last year, and the year before, and the gear before that, as far back as you would like to go. Take especially the figures for 140 selected cities out- side of New York.

I . OPERATING TESTS 1. CHARACTER OF ORE UNDER INVESTIGATION On the eastern end of the Mesabi Range, in Northern Minnesota, is a large formation of siliceous rock which contains bands and fine grains of magnetite . The magnetite comprises about 35 per cent. of the rock. Fig.. 1 show's graphically that the tonnage of minus 200-mesh material produced varies directly with the tonnage fed to the mill. There is undoubtedly some limit to this relation, but there seems to be no indication of it at 18 T. per hr. Some of the conclusions drawn from this test are that: (a) The ball-mill is naturally a machine of very large capacity; (b) if it is not possible to deliver a large tonnage of original feed to the mill, a closed circuit should be provided so that the mill may crush its own oversize.

The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. Results and experimental procedures are presented covering a preliminary laboratory investigation of the compaction of reservoir rocks and its effect on porosity and permeability. "Egective" compressibility was measured by subjecting core material to an overburden load and reducing pore pressure. Preliminary results showed relatively high effective compressibilities which varied from 1.8 X 10-' pore volume/pore volume /lb / in.~ for limestones to 7.7 X 10-6 pore volume/pore volume/lb/in.' and even higher for sandstone reservoirs conmining large amounts of fine clay material. It appeared from the initiol results that the effective compressibility of the material could not be correlated directly with porosity and that other factors, such as the amount of clay material present might have to be taken into account. The work to date has indicated that effective compressibility factors will have to be measured for the particular reservoirs heing studied. Oil permeability of core materid was measured under various effective overburden loads from 0 to 8,000 psi. It has been found than reduction of permeability in clean sands was relatively small and the results agreed with published data. For sandstones containing large amounts of clay, preliminary tests indicated very large reductions in permeability with increasing effective overburden pressures. It is planned to continue laboratory work on this phase because of its importance in low-permeability reservoirs. INTRODUCTION During the past few years increasing interest has been shown in the differences obtained between conventional laboratory measurements on cores at atmospheric pressure and those when reservoir conditions are simulated. Since these data are used as the basis for calculations and the prediction of reservoir behavior, their evaluation under reservoir conditions is most important. The effect of the compressibility of the rock upon the reservoir behavior, as fluid pressure declines, is an important subject which has been insufficiently studied. The total pressure on any plane through a reservoir is the result of the grain-to-grain rock pressure due to the overburden and the pressure of the interstitial fluid on the plane. As reservoir fluid pressure declines, the net load on the rock phase must increase, and the result is the compaction of the rock structure which produces a decrease in pore volume. Simultaneously, the rock grains expand into the pore space as the fluid pressure declines. The result of these two effects is defined as the effective compressibility of the rock and is expressed in units of pore volume/original pore volume/psi. Work was started by Imperial in 1954 on the effects of pressure on the porosity of reservoir rock. These studies established effective compressibility factors for some limestones and dolomites. Since that time effective compressibilities have been obtained for other Canadian and some U. S. reservoir rocks. In conjunction with the study of porosity, an investigation has also been initiated to determine the effects of pressure on permeability. One outcrop and several reservoir sandstone cores have been tested to date. ROCK COMPRESSIBILITY Apparatus anD Procedure A diagram of the apparatus used in these studies is shown in Fig. 1. The equipment was constructed so that a uniform pressure, equivalent to the reservoir overburden, could be applied by the oil pump and transmitted on all sides of the core through the Lucite sheath. The effect of working reduction, stress-relief annealing, and recrystallized grain size on the tensile and notch-tensile properties of molybdenum and Mo-0.5 Ti was studied. It was found that increasing the amount of working reduction increased the strength and reduced the tendencies toward brittle behavior. Stress -relief annealing did not alter the strength but lowered the transition temperature. Increasing the recrystallized grain size lowered the strength and raised the transition temperature. The notch -unnotch strength ratio began to decrease with decreasing temperature at temperatures below those at which the notched ductility fell to zero for all of the micro structural conditions investigated. BEING bcc metals, the refractory metals in Groups Va and VIa (V, Cb, Ta, and Cr, Mo, W) undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition and exhibit brittle fractures at low temperatures. Previous research has shown that molybdenum and tungsten not only have higher transition temperatures than columbium and tantalum but show a marked sensitivity of transition temperature to structure as well.' Recrystallized materials become brittle at considerably higher temperatures than is the case with material having a worked or fibered micro-structure. Evidence of structure sensitivity has also been detected in columbium- and tantalum-base alloys containing appreciable amounts of molybdenum or tungsten such as F-48 (Cb-15W-5Mo-1Zr) and Ta-10w.2 This paper describes the results of research conducted to further evaluate the effects of metal. lurgical structure on the low-temperature tensile and notch-tensile properties of molybdenum and Mo-0.5Ti. The effects of rolling reduction, stress-relief annealing temperature, and recrystallized grain size were studied. Considerable progress has been made in explaining the fundamental mechanisms of the flow and fracture characteristics of bcc metals. Several of these concepts are helpful in interpreting the data obtained in this study. Brittle fractures occur when the highly temperature-sensitive yield strength equals, or exceeds, the temperature-insensitive brittle cleavage fracture stress.3 The rapid increase in yield strength with decreasing temperature, characteristic of all bcc metals, is therefore of primary concern. petch4 has described the yield strength, ay, (stress required to initiate plastic flow) of bcc metals by the expression where ai is the frictional resistance to slip, Ky is a constant numerically equal to the slope of a a vs curve, and 2d is the average grain diamefer. The oi term itself is thought to be composed of a temperature-insensitive component dependent on impurity content and second-phase particles and a temperature-sensitive component dependent on the Pierls-Nabarro force.5 This equation has also been demonstrated to hold for the flow stress (stress required to maintain continued plastic flow).' Brittle-crack nucleation is thought to occur by the coalescence of dislocations piled up in slip planes at sessile dislocations or twin and grain boundaries.7,8 These proposed mechanisms require that a large number of dislocations be released into the active slip planes so that sufficiently large stress concentrations are produced at the dislocation pile-ups to enable coalescence into a micro-crack. Therefore, at least a microscopic amount of slip must occur in some grains to facilitate initial crack formation. Cottrell 7 has predicted that brittle fracture, nucleated by slip, should occur when where ty is the shear yield strength, ß = 1 in un- notched xension, u is the shear modulus, and y is the effective surface energy. This equation incorporates the Griffith concept of fracture that a crack will propagate if the decrease in strain energy equals or exceeds the increase in surface energy.

DURING 1943, supplies of lead, like those of most base metals, moved from a position of scarcity to one of ample supply for all possible war requirements. The principal worry in the market, as 1944 began, was that surplus stocks might increase too rapidly to maintain price stability. The problem of postwar stockpiling had definitely entered the picture. The end of the year finds the lead industry having met all use demands, but not without depleting stocks to a critical low in spite of heavy importations. The principal reason for this dangerously reduced stock position is lack of adequate man power, which, without question, has become the lead industry's number one problem. This condition became obvious about the middle of the year, after Selective Service placed in effect orders that no deferments would be given employees under 26 years of age, and to a complacent attitude toward the industry assumed by the War Manpower Commission. It has become progressively worse since then. The WPB continued its policy, started during 1943, of easing restrictions on materials to be used for maintenance, repairs, and operating supplies. The policy of premium payments established by the Metals Reserve Co. was continued and, in spite of expressions to the contrary, has proved quite satisfactory. In short, the Government continued its program of stimulating the lead industry in practically all

An approximate method of calculation is developed in this paper which allows duplication of radial unsteady-state gas flow computer results where Darcy's law applies, such as those reported by Aronofsky and Jenkins and Bruce, Peaceman, Rachford, and Rice. Moreover, the new calculation method can be used to obtain results for radial unsteady-state gas flow obeying the quadratic flow law proposed by Duwez and Green. Means are discussed for predicting well behavior at single or superimposed flow rates in finite or infinite reservoirs, determining reservoir rock properties from well-test data, reproducing and interpreting back-pressure test data, and determining the radial extent and reserves of gas reservoirs from well-test data. Example calculations are presented for gas flow following both Darcy's law and the quadratic flow law. INTRODUCTION Since the publishing of U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7,1 most gas-well testing methods have been based on the equation q = y (pl2 - pw2)a, where q = production rate, pl and pw, are formation pressure and sandface pressure, respectively, and y and a are constants to be obtained from test data. These methods, used for predicting both deliverability and "open-flow" capacity of gas wells, have been useful and accurate in many cases but unsatisfactory in others. Even at best, however, they do not supply information about the formation or lead to an understanding of nonsteady-state gas flow in porous media. Many theoretically based studies2-4 of gas flow obeying Darcy's law have been made.' Since the partial differential equations which result from combining Darcy's flow law with the continuity equation are nonlinear, most of the published research consists of either numerical solutions or analytical solutions for linear approximating equations. Such solutions have been of limited value in field work due to their unhandy form and their failure to correlate most field data. There is evidence5,6 which indicates that Darcy's law is inadequate to describe gas flow at some flow rates of practical interest. A quadratic flow law: which reduces to Darcy's law at low rates, is more successful in accounting for experimentally observed behavior. This flow law has been applied successfully to a few hypothetical reservoir cases in work which has recently been published.10 However, these numerical solutions of the equations involved have been successful only on a special analog computer. Routine applications to field cases would be awkward and have not been attempted. The present paper describes an approximate method for computing nonsteady-state gas flow solutions which has been completely successful in predicting the results for both Darcy flow and quadratic flow obtained by elaborate numerical methods. The new calculation method allows determination of the observable variables in gas-well testing at constant rates. It is similar to the scheme of using a succession of steady states suggested by Muskat7 in that it makes use of steady-state and material-balance equations. It also is similar to the work of Aronofsky and Jenkins2 in that the new method includes Aronofsky and Jenkins' stabilized flow equation as a special case. It improves upon both of these calculation schemes in that it accurately describes all portions of reservoir history and suggests means of determining reservoir rock properties from well-test data. This paper deals only with production from a reservoir, in which case the rate is defined as being negative. The reservoir studied here is a homogeneous, disk-shaped porous body of uniform thickness, with all boundaries sealed except the inner radial boundary of the well.

High carbon, low phosphorus steel can now be made from pig iron containing 0.7 pct P or more, in a commercial sized open hearth furnace. No external heat is required for refining, and steel produced is identical with basic open hearth steel. THE classical Thomas process, which requires liquid pig iron containing over 11/2 pct P, yields a product relatively high in phosphorzs and nitrogen. Unless large quantities of recarburizers are added to the refined steel, the product is low in carbon content. Thus, the Thomas process is not well suited to American raw materials, and its product is often not acceptable according to the standards set by American industry. The shortcomings of the Thomas process have long been recognized; with the advent of low cost oxygen, studies were initiated to develop pneumatic processes which would conceivably overcome the inherent objections to Thomas steelmaking. Several such modified basic pneumatic processes have been tested experimentally in commercial trials during the past decade. Probably the most widely publicized of these developments has been the oxygen converter process as practiced in Austrial,2 and in Canada.8 n this process, oxygen is substituted for air and introduced above the liquid bath in order to increase the heat available to the metallurgical system. This avoids the need for high phosphorus raw materials and gives a product low in nitrogen. In this process, the phosphorus content in the final product depends, to a considerable extent, on the total amount of that element in the burden. The rotary furnace4 which is now in commercial operation at Domnarvet Steelworks, Sweden, is producing low phosphorus steel from iron containing 1.8 to 2 pct P. One or more early slags are removed and by this means high carbon steels of open hearth quality can be produced. At this stage of development there is some question as to the applicability of the rotary process to large heats. Another development has been the use of oxygen in combination with either steam6 or carbon dioxide yn the basic bessemer, thus avoiding the introduction of nitrogen gas into the refining system and giving a product relatively low in nitrogen content. A double slag process has been used in Europe7 in conjunction with a regular Thomas converter, by means of which it is possible to obtain a phosphorus content in the product approaching that obtained in basic open hearth steels. The Turbo-Hearth process:' which uses the side blowing principle so as to produce low nitrogen steel from normal American pig irons, has been developed experimentally in this country. A process fitted to U. S. raw materials All of the preceding processes, with the exception of the rotary furnace, suffer from the common shortcoming that they cannot be adapted to the production of high-carbon, low-phosphorus steels unless large proportions of recarburizers are added. In 1947, a program was initiated by the Inland Steel Company1' to study an oxygen steelmaking process specifically designed to utilize the full range of phosphorus analyses encountered in American pig irons and to give finai products with phosphorus and nitrogen contents comparable to steel produced by the basic open hearth process. Some of the objectives of the proposed process are: 1) the process should be able to accommodate molten pig iron conta;rl;rrg up to 1 pct P., 2) sne process should be subject to close control of carbon analysis, 3) the process should be capable of producing high carbon

The crystallo graphy of several grains of the lamellar Ni-Ni3 B eutectic solidified under conditions appvoachirt equilibriun has been examined.. A preferred interlace relationship has been observed in this system which may be described as: A detailed study of this interface by means of an atomistic model reveals the interface Plane to be puckered and more accurately describable as: Analysis of the atomic configuration on these planes reveals that this interface conforms to the orientation criteria proposed for directionally solidified lanzellar eutectics. In addition, a model is proposed to help explain the growth of a "puckered" interface. DURING the past several years an increasing number of unidirectional solidification experiments on eutectic alloys have been reported in the literature. The primary emphasis, in most cases, has been the effect of growth variables on microstructure. Some authors have, however, studied the crystallographic orientations and interfacial relationships resulting from these experiments. Four crystallographic studies have been published;'-4 in each of these there is a factor which tends to prohibit the extension of the observations beyond the particular system. In the Al-CuA12 system, the approximately equal volume fractions of the phases have resulted in sorrie controversy as to which phase constitutes the matrix. In the Mg-Mg,Sn eutectic the presence of several interconnecting lamellar systems2 complicates the analysis. The two remaining eutectics. 1nSb-b and Al-Ali, are both rodlike (the latter exhibits a plate morphology at low solidification rates): the matrix in each of these alloys is the simpler (fcc) phase. Studies of nucleation in eutectic alloys indicate that the more complex constituent is the nucleating -.phase.' For the purpose of an analysis of interface crystallography it was deemed desirable to study a lamellar system in which the matrix was the more complex and, presumably. the nucleating phase. Recently it has been shown that there is a eutectic in the Ni-B system between Ni3B and i; preliminary investigation by the authors indicated that the matrix in this eutectic is the boride phase. The structure of Ni,B is reported to be orthorhombic, the compound being isostructural with cementite. This eutectic is therefore analogous to that between austenite and cementite. Furthermore, the Ni-B system is not susceptible to a competing eutectic reaction as occurs in the Fe-C alloys; nor does it exhibit a eutectoid decomposition. For these reasons the study of the interfacial relationship in the Ni-Ni3B eutectic was undertaken. PROCEDURE Ingots of nominal composition 3.5 and 3.6 wt pct B were induction-melted in boron nitride crucibles within a graphite susceptor under a boric oxide slag; a dynamic argon atmosphere was maintained over the melt to prevent rapid oxidation of the susceptor. The raw materials used were 99.97 pct Ni from Huntington Metals Division of International Nickel Co. and 99.8+ pct B chips supplied by the United Mineral and Chemical Co. The analyses of the starting materials are listed in Table I. The melt was held at 1500cC for 2 hr to insure complete reaction and allowed to cool to room temperature. The castings were chemically analyzed for boron and were metallographically examined for uniformity. The metallographic samples were mechanically polished through 0.1 p A1,0, and etched with Carapella's reagent. Each master casting was cut up to make several specimen blanks which were remelted, in boron nitride crucibles, to form ingots of 1/2 to 3/4 in. in diarn by 7 in. long. These ingots were unidirectionally solidified using a modified vertical Bridgman technique. The rate of solidification was assumed to be equal to the uniform rate at which the crucible-susceptor assembly was withdrawn from the induction coil. This rate was varied from 1.18 to 2.21 cm per hr. In order to perform these experiments it was found necessary to redetermine the eutectic composition. This was accomplished by the zone-melting technique described by Yue and lark.' An ingot of 4.5 wt pct B was zone-melted in a horizontal boron nitride boat 7-1/2 in. long with a 112-in.-square cross section. A

EARLIER studies of the dependence of creep on structure1 and of the dependence of creep rupture on creep behavior2 did not include detailed discussion of the phases present in the specimens under examination. It is of interest to determine the nature and amounts of such phases present since it is well known that these are dependent on composition, heat treatment and creep conditions.3 This investigation has therefore been undertaken to identify these constituents and to determine their relative amounts. This report presents the results of this investigation and describes an improved "extraction replica" technique developed in the course of the work. The composition of the Type 316 austenitic stainless steels studied in this investigation is given in Table I. The specimens were solution treated at 2000°F for 1/2 hr and water quenched. Those specimens subjected to prestrain at room temperature Methods for extracting precipitate particles from materials for electron and X-ray diffraction analysis have been described by Fisher,4 Smith and Nutting: and Booker and coworkers.6'7 Electrolytic extraction methods have been described by Andrews and Hughes.8 The first two methods have been used at this Laboratory, but have not proved satisfactory for many problems requiring X-ray diffraction analysis. It has been difficult to remove the replicas or to avoid tearing them during removal. These difficulties are overcome by backing the replica with a water-soluble plastic such as Dupont 51-05 Elvanol (polyvinyl alcohol). The backing increases the thickness of the replica so that it can be mechanically stripped from unloosened particles without folding or tearing. This procedure eliminates the stripping of wet replicas, which usually have a low tear strength. By stripping replicas after drying, it is possible to extract partially loosened particles which otherwise would remain imbedded in the metal. The modified method is as follows: after the specimen is polished, it is etched for 60 min in modified glyceregia consisting of 30 ml glycerol, 7 ml nitric acid, and 4 ml of hydrochloric acid. The sample is then washed, air dried, and coated with a 20 pct Baker and Adamson 1611 collodion (85 pct amyl acetate by volume) film. After the collodion film is dry (about 15 min), the sample is again etched in the modified glyceregia for 50 min, washed with isopropyl alcohol (to prevent dissolving the collodion) and air dried. A very thick coat of polyvinyl alcohol (about 50 pct solution "Elvanol Dupont 51-05" in water) is poured over the sample and is permitted to dry for about 24 hr. The composite film containing the precipitates is then stripped from the specimen and floated, polyvinyl alcohol side down, in water (at about 50°C) until the polyvinyl alcohol dissolves. This usually takes about 15 min. Should any of the polyvinyl alcohol remain on the replica, it does not give a crystalline diffraction pattern and therefore does not hinder identification of the precipitates. The extraction replica, floating in water, is picked up on a glass fiber and mounted in the Debye-Scherrer camera for X-ray diffraction analysis. Concentration of the etchant, and also etching time, had to be increased for several of the samples. Fig. 1 shows two extraction replicas taken from different areas of spec. M74-37; X-ray analysis showed a strong diffraction pattern of M23C6 and a medium one of u phase. A

The effect of the condition of friction upon the ultimate unit compressive strength as determined between the compressed faces of precisely machined coal specimens and specially prepared testing platens has been examined. Reductions of 30 to 40% in the ultimate unit compressive strength of these model coal pillars have been verified when lubricants areused between the faces as compared to non-lubricated faces. Increase in unit compressive strength due to confinement at each of three levels of friction appears to follow generally the widely accepted "1/2 power law", i.e. S - C (L/T)1/2 where S is the unit ultimate strength, C is a constant dependent on the coal being tested and the coefficient of friction acting at the compression surfaces and L and T are the least width and thickness of the specimen, respectively. Results suggest that the surface condition of both the specimen and platens should be mentioned in detail in conjunction with compression testing, for although the term (L/T)1/2 is adequate for all practical purposes, the coefficient C is directly dependent on the condition of interfacial friction, all else remaining constant. One phase of the investigation of the confining effect of friction on the ultimate unit compressive strength of small coal specimens has recently been completed at the School of Mines of West Virginia University. The efficient control of ground is of fundamental importance to successful mining operations and the design of support pillars has always presented the mining engineer with a difficult and intriguing engineering problem. Since about the turn of the century, many investigators have performed extensive laboratory tests on small coal specimens in efforts to solve some of the perplexing problems of strata control and pillar action in coal mines. A detailed review of this work would serve no purpose here, but a brief mention of the more significant contributions is in order. Muller16 was perhaps the first to illustrate the effect of confining pressure on the strength of coal specimens in compression. His work has recently been more carefully expanded by the experiments of Murrell17 in Great Britain. Rice and Enzian l9 observed that as the size of cubical test specimens increased, the unit compressive strength decreased. These observations were later supplemented by Lawall and Holland, 13 by Greenwald4,5 et a1 at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, by Gaddy3 as well as by Steart,22 Millard15 et a1 and Evans2 et al. Gaddy3 seems to have been first to quantify this relationship with his equation: S = K/vd , where S - ultimate unit compressive strength (psi), K = a constant dependent on the coal, and D =edge dimension (in inches). Holland7 concluded that the strength of coal as affected by lateral dimensions and thickness could be expressed as where K = a coefficient dependent upon the coal, L = least width of pillar (in.) and T = thickness of pillar (in.). Data supplied by this formula have been compared to the estimated stresses in pillars that had been standing for long periods in coal mines and in the cases so far studied the results indicate that the formula predictions are sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes (Holland11 ). This equation therefore is believed to be the simplest and most accurate tool available at the present time for approximating the strength of a coal pillar (over a specified range of L/T) in situ. A scale based on existing data for the mutual solid solubilities of metals in binary systems has been compiled. This scale is useful for estimating the relative magnitude of two solubilities, provided that these two metals do not form a continuous series of solid solutions. In his classic work on the theory of metallic solid solutions, Hume-Rothery proposed that, other things being equal, a metal of lower valency should be regarded as more likely to dissolve one of higher valency than vice versa. He called this the "relative valency effect". Later he found that the application of this general principle was limited to the three univalent metals: copper, silver, and gold. In dealing with alloys of these metals with metals of higher valency, Hume-Rothery stated, it is usually found that the solid solution of the univalent metal is of the greater extent.&apos; The question of whether there is a systematic trend in comparing the relative magnitude of mutual solubilities, if valency is not considered a criterion, naturally arises. The present paper proposes a "mutual solid solubility" scale on an empirical basis. The order of its arrangement is determined by the relative magnitude of mutual solid solubilities. Some applications of and inferences from this scale are given. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF THE SCALE An extensive survey of over 400 binary phase diagrams shows that, with certain exceptions and within certain limitations, metals can be arranged in the following order: Na Zn Cd Ga Bi Ge Sb As Hg Sn Si Mg Li Ba In Tl Pb Al Ca Be Mn Cr Re W Mo Cu V Ta Fe Ru Cb Co Ti Hf Ni Os Zr Ir Pt Au U Rh Ce Pd Ag Th so that a metal higher on the scale tends to have a higher solubility in a metal lower on the scale than vice versa. some experimental solubility data are given in Table I. These data, unless otherwise specified, are taken from Hansen and Anderko.6 Throughout this paper, the term "solubility of A in B" is taken to mean the maximum solid solubility of A in B in atomic percent, while the maximum solid solubility of B in A in atomic percent is called "reciprocal solubility". The exceptions found in the above-mentioned survey are: Al-Ag system, 20.34 at. pct Al in Ag, 23.8 Ag in Al; Mg-Pb system, 5.9 Mg in Pb, 7.75 Pb in Mg; As-Sn system, vanishingly small amount of As in Sn, a large As primary solid solution; Cd-Hg system, Cd in Hg <Hg in Cd; Mg-T1 system, 5(?) Mg in ßT1, 15.4 T1 in Mg; W-Ti system, -21 W in ßTi, -25 Ti in W; Zr-Ag system, probably small amount of Zr in Ag, 20 Ag in ßZr.7 Considering the large number of examples, the exceptions are few. It is remarkable that metals may be so arranged without considering other factors such as size, crystal structure, electronic structure, and so forth. A limitation to the use of the scale is the fact that it cannot be tested for two metals forming a continuous series of solid solutions. DURING the early years of Homestake operations, shaft signaling from the cage tenders to the hoisting engineers was done by mechanical means. Small steel cables or jointed steel rods were suspended in the shaft compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers&apos; stations by means of bell cranks and steel wires. The system was simple and economical and served the purpose well until the mine reached a depth of 1000 ft., then the system became slow and cumbersome and required a considerable amount of muscular effort to operate it with much speed, because of the inertia of the heavy moving parts. The mechanical signaling was superseded by a simple electrical system consisting of a single pair of wires in steel conduit for each shaft compartment. In the shaft at each station a pull switch was connected to the wires. The switches were operated by means of bell cords, which extended from station to station. This electrical system was a great improvement over the mechanical one, but it had one serious drawback, which also applied to the older system; namely, the engineer did not know where a signal originated. Later on this signaling was improved to overcome this drawback, and to give the engineer a positive indication of a signal&apos;s origin. In this system a separate return wire from each pull switch is carried to an annunciator at the engineer&apos;s station, where it indicates the signal&apos;s origin. While the annunciator system used by Homestake is very safe and reliable, it has the inherent drawback of all wire-connected systems in that it is impossible to send a signal from a moving cage. A number of years ago Homestake became interested in the possibility of using some sort of radio transmission for shaft signaling. The company did much experimental work with purely radio signal transmission, but no practical way was discovered to use radio transmission in a mine shaft for signaling to or from a cage. Therefore, all efforts were directed to devising a practical way of using the hoisting rope as part of the circuit. It was realized that the return circuit from the rope would need to be through electrostatic coupling between the cage and the earth or ground sides of the shaft, because the guides would not always be wet enough to make possible good electrical contact between the cage and earth, therefore relatively high-frequency alternating current was chosen as the medium of transmission. Soon a practical system was developed for transmitting an electric current from a moving cage over an electric circuit of which the hoisting rope was a part. No precise geographic limits can be given for the zinc- and lead-region of North Arkansas. In general terms it lies N. of the Boston mountains and W. of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern railway; but the prospecting and the development of the ore-deposits have not gone far enough to outline more than vaguely the areas over which workable deposits are to be expected. The tardiness of the development of the region is due in part to its topography, as a hilly and partly mountainous country, through which there have been no railways until recently. There is no longer any doubt, however, about the existence in that region of large bodies of zinc-ores. I. General Geology. The general geology of the region is, in the main, quite simple, but that of the ore-deposits is less so. The zinc-regions of North Arkansas lie about the southern flanks of the Ozark dome. The rocks are approximately horizontal, but have a gentle southward dip away from the axis of this dome. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the broad features of the to-. pography and geologic structure. South of the zinc-region, the sandstones and shales of the lower Coal-Measures form the north-facing escarpment of the Boston mountains. Beneath the Coal-Measure rocks are the limestones and cherts of the Lower Carboniferous; and these rest upon Silurian and Ordovician beds. The uppermost beds (Coal-Measures) have been cut into by erosion along the mountain-slopes so that their edges or outcrops have a meandering or dendritic form. The same thing happens with the Lower Carboniferous beds; but these, haying been more or less protected by the overlying Coal-Measured, have broader bases, and cover a much larger area. In places,

The material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

Northwest frontier is here defined as Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. The mineral potential of this area is great and will unfold in the decade ahead but now the largest single producer is the Pine Point lead-zinc mine in the NWT about 1200 km north of Edmonton, Alta., close to the south shore of Great Slave Lake. The mill, initially designed for 4540 mtpd, was expanded to 7250 mtpd in 1969. This operation is described in detail in Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc, Vol.1, Chapt. 17, SME/AIME in the article by W. H. R. Gibney.

DESPITE the war, the First Pan American Mining Congress, held in Santiago, Chile, Jan. 15-23, was attended by about 300 persons including the official delegates from sixteen of the American republics. The United States delegation consisted of Elmer Pehrson, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines; D. F. Hewett, of the U. S. Geological Survey; William H. Hobbs, of the Carnegie Foundation; and C. W. Wright, delegate of the Board of Economic Warfare and of the A.I.M.E. Mr. Wright was elected to head the delegation. Among the other members were Edward Steidle, of Pennsylvania State College and also an official A.I.M.E. delegate; John Huttl, of Engineering and Mining Journal; W. 0.
