Early in 1965 the Surface Combustion Division of the Midland-Ross Corporation was awarded the contract to engineer and construct a taconite pelletizing plant for the National Steel pellet plant, administered by the Hanna Mining Co., near Keewatin, Minn. This plant, which will have an annual capacity of 2,400,000 long tons, will produce pellets from magnetite concentrate using a new process developed through a joint research program by Midland-Ross, Hanna Mining, and the National Steel Corp. The work that culminated in the decision to construct this plant is the result of a research program for the development of the Midland-Ross heat fast process for the production of prereduced or metallized pellets. PELLETIZING PROCESS There are many acceptable methods for producing oxide pellets from ground iron ores and concentrates, and all of these give an acceptable product for blast furnace utilization. The vertical shaft furnace, the traveling grate, and the grate-kiln have been installed in many pelletizing plants in the northern hemisphere; therefore, the acceptance of these methods and the problems associated with them are well understood. However, this research project investigated a method for improving upon these processes to produce a high quality oxide pellet at a low operating cost.

The ß decomposition of Zr-U-O alloys was studied during an interrupted quench from the a + ß region. Decomposition was more rapid than in binary Zr-U alloys of the same uranium content or qf equivalent ß composition. The rapid transformation has been ascribed to the presence of the primary a phase which provided nucleation sites and which permitted preferential partitioning of oxygen to the a phase and of uranium to the COMMERCLAL heat treatments are designed to produce certain strength and toughness character- istics by controlling the microstructure of an alloy. A desired distribution of microconstituents is achieved in practice by treating an alloy under the correct time-temperature conditions. OPERATION of a modern steel plant presents a curious anomaly. Large-scale operations, in which large volumes or heavy weights of materials are involved, are not usually subject to close control or narrow specifications. On the other hand, operations that call for a high degree of precision are usually carried out under carefully controlled conditions with delicate, precise machinery and tools, and production is made secondary to quality. In a modern steel mill both extremes are taken as a matter of course. A strip mill making auto-body sheets must supply its customers with sheets that all come within a tolerance of plus or minus 0.003 in. in gauge at any point from side to side or end to end, and without blemishes either of color or surface. Sheets that were considered par excellence as recently as ten years ago could not even find a market today. Such exacting requirements have made necessary a nicety of control that approaches the watchmaker's art. Notwithstanding this necessity for precision, the scale of operation is stupendous.

Photogrammetrists are studying with new interest the problems of mine mapping and mining engineers are beginning to see what photogrammetry can do for them. Administrators in a number of European and U. S. mines have tried photogram- metric methods and are finding that better maps and data, needed for mine development, can be produced with savings of time, men, and money. In addition to wide use in small scale mapping projects, photogrammetric methods are now used for producing large scale plans and maps in German coal and lignite mines, in some U. S. open pit mines, to inventory TVA coal stock piles, and to compute highway excavation volumes. In each case surveying and map compilation has been made more efficient and accurate by photogrammetry and at significant savings over ground methods.

Several investigators have measured the heat capacity of cementite, using different methods of attack, but the agreement between the values obtained cannot be considered good. Naeserl has made measurements of "average heat capacities" of iron carbide between 1026" and 85" K., using a water calorimeter. His computed true specific heat at 78.1" K. is 11.22 cal. per gram-formula mass, which, if correct, is much too high for any reasonably accurate extrapolation to 0" K. The cementitc used by Naeser was obtained from a steel containing 0.9 per cent carbon, by electrolytically dissolving out the iron in a neutral bath of ferrous chloride. The cementite remained as a coarse, crystalline, gray powder. Andes2 has measured the specific heat of iron carbide, from 102" to 323" K., as it exists in steel. The specific heats of several slugs of steel of known iron carbide content were determined, and the specific heat of the iron carbide (Fe3C) calculated by plotting specific heat versus percentage of carbon, and extrapolating to pure Fe3C (6.7 per cent C). The heat-capacity values for temperatures below 100" K. were obtained by comparing the temperature-specific heat curve for Fe3C to that of Fe. Since the two were very similar in the range examined experimentally and approach more closely at low temperatures, it was assumed that near the absolute zero the form of the curve for Fe3C would be similar to that of Fe. Andes calculates for the entropy of Fe3 C,S298 = 23.55 e.u. The heat of formation of Fe3C has been studied by several workers. Kelley3 has reviewed these measurements and calculations, and selects those of Roth* and Naeser6 as worthy of most consideration. Roth has given AH = 5400 cal. + 30 per cent as a result of his own and other work. Naeser has determined the heat of formation from Fe and different forms of carbon, and for graphite (0) he finds AH = 5600 cal. Kelley accepts the rounded figure AH = 5500 as the heat of formation at 298.1" K., but this value is quite uncertain.

HYDROGEN effects in titanium alloys have been the subject of extensive research in recent years. Lenning, Craighead, and Jaffee1 showed that hydrogen embrittles a titanium and, at the same time, elevates the temperature at which the transition from brittle to ductile failure occurs during impact testing. In later work: the same investigators concluded that several all-ß alloys tolerate large amounts of hydrogen without serious damage to mechanical properties, but two-phase alloys suffer varying degrees of embrittlement, depending upon the specific ß-stabilizing addition used and whether or not an a stabilizer is also present. The mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement has not been clearly established. Strain rate has been shown to be an important factor and, therefore, a strain-aging phenomenon is suspected to cause the effects that hydrogen has produced on mechanical properties.3-5 Ripling6 has pointed out that ductility damage varies inversely with strain rate in a-ß alloys and directly in a alloys. This effect in a alloys can be associated with transition-temperature behavior, but the embrittlemeat mechanism in two-phase alloys remains in question. During the course of research conducted for the U. S. Air Force, a dark-etching phase has been observed at the grain boundaries of certain two-phase titanium alloys after duplex (solution plus aging) heat treatments.5-7 An example of the dark-etching interface phase is shown in Fig. 1. Decrease in ductility accompanies the appearance of the minor phase but has not always been attributable solely to the presence of the phase. Although the dark-etching phase has been observed in alloys under a rather narrow range of heat-treatment conditions, it is of general interest since it is always associated with the presence of hydrogen. The known embrittling effect of hydrogen makes any facet of its behavior of particular importance. The intergranular phase has been observed in titanium-base alloys with relatively high amounts of the ß-stabilizing elements. ONE of the problems studied by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Washington has been the re-treatment of table middlings. Hydraulic classification has given the best results. Instead of using the classifier to prepare the feed to the tables, as has been the practise for many years in ore dressing, it is used to separate part of a middling product that cannot be re-treated successfully on the table. Middlings are desirable in a table plant because the separation according to specific gravity is incomplete; that is, in the products of the table there is always an overlapping of free particles of coal and refuse that can be distinguished with heavy liquids such as are used in the float-and-sink test. The causes of this overlapping may be divided into two groups, those outside the table separation itself and those inherent in the table separation. The first of these groups includes, among other causes, the following: (1) poor adjustments of the table, (2) overloading or underloading the table, (3) irregularities in the quantity and quality of the feed, (4) irregularities in the power and water supply, and (5) a vertical danc-ing motion of the table deck due to weak foundations. These causes of overlapping are largely unnecessary in a properly designed and constructed plant; but whenever they are present they materially affect the character of the middling product, and hence the problem of re-treatment. The other group includes three additional causes: (6) small differences in specific gravity between coal and impurities, (7) a size-specific-gravity relationship of the coal and refuse particles in the table feed such that the sizing action of the table opposes the separation according to the specific gravity, and (8) shapes of particles that prevent a separation. The sixth, small differences in specific gravity, may be a very important reason for an incomplete separation. The change in specific gravity from coal to shale is always gradual and the designation of one part as coal and another part as refuse is arbitrary. P. B. Baxendell is to be complimented for an exccllent piece of work. To our knowledge there has been no previous publication of field data on the flow of oil and gas through the annulus of a well. It is certainly gratifying to see this work on annular flow confirm the previous published correlation procedure on tubing flow. It extends considerably the range under which reliable gas-lift calculations can be made. Baxendell discussed this work with us about a year ago and was kind enough to send a large scale plot of his correlation. We had been designing gas-lift installations on flow through the annulus, assuming that the original correlation of the f factor based on tubing flow' was valid as long as we stayed within the same mass velocity range on which the correlation was based. Doing this work necessitated the use of an equivalent diameter for the annular flow. The equivalent diameter is defined as area' of stream cross section wetted perimeter and for the case of an annulus is D, — D,. Substituting this in the basic equation correlating energy loss along with the area to flow required to convert the velocity, to volumetric flow rate, D (Baxendell's Eq. 7) becomes dell's expression, D,). Similarly, the D in 1.4737 X 10 (M&/D) becomes (D, + D;) for annular flow. On receipt of Baxendell's data, we. of course, recalculated it to put it into the form we were using, and to see how well it agreed with the correlation based on tubing flow. Fig. 1 shows the results, which were certainly gratifying. For low values of (D, - D,) pv, the data coincide with the data on flow through tubing, whereas at high values the data on flow through the annuli appear to be leveling off to a constant value. For very high rates of flow where the turbulence is very high, one might expect the value f to level out and become constant. Two special tools for recovering gamma-ray probes and logging cable from drillholes have been designed by Ohm and Bunker and constructed by Ohm. Though intended specifically for U. S. Geological Survey equipment, they may be used with other equipment of the same general type. Fishing Tool for Probes: A fishing tool of the overshot type (Fig. 1) was designed to retrieve logging probes (sondes) that become disconnected from the logging cable and are trapped in the drillhole. When the tool slides over the top of the gamma-ray probe, studs on the bottom engage the shoulder near the top of the probe (Fig. 2), which is then pulled to surface. The barrel can be constructed from brass or steel tubing. Wall thickness is not a critical dimension, but the tool should be heavy enough to sink through mud or water in the drillhole. The internal length of the tool must be enough to prevent interference with the upper end of the probe head as the tool slides over it. The design of the probe head used by the USGS required a minimum free space of 2 1/2 in. inside the fishing tool, which was made 7 1/2 in. long to increase the weight. The lower end, which engages the shoulder of the upper end of the probe, contains three studs placed at 120" around the circumference of the tool and held in the engaging position by the tension of a spring wire. The studs can be made of any metal, such as steel, having high tensile strength. As the tool slides over the probe the studs are pushed outward from the center against the spring tension, allowing the tool to slide into position below the shoulder of the probe head. The spring tension forces the studs inward into the engaged position after they pass the shoulder. When the tool is raised the studs stop against the shoulder, preventing the tool from sliding up over the top of the probe. Once it engages the shoulder of the probe it cannot be freed until both probe and fishing equipment are recovered from the drillhole.

The object of this paper is to give a brief description of the coals in the different districts of Arkansas and Oklahoma, their present commercial classification, and the need for a scientific classification that shall be more nearly in accord with their physical and chemical properties and shall place them in their proper position in a general scheme of classification. The paper is based on two seasons of field work in the Oklahoma coal field in 1930 and 1931 and on several weeks spent in visiting most of the operating mines in Arkansas in the same years. Most of the productive districts of the Arkansas-Oklahoma coal field lie in an east-west trending belt immediately north of the Ouachita Mountains, but the northwestern districts in Oklahoma trend northward toward Kansas. With the exception of the Muskogee district, where very little coal has been mined, the coal beds of the last-mentioned districts are all younger than those of the districts in the east-west trending belt. Description of the Coal by Districts Lehigh District, Oklahoma (5).1—In the Lehigh district mining has been extensive, but only three or four mines are operating at the present time. Two coal beds of workable thickness, Atoka and Lehigh, are known in this field. The greater part of the mining has been in the Lehigh, or younger bed, and all analyses available for the field have been of that coal. The Lehigh coal is very tough and blocky, the moisture and ash contents are fairly high, 6.5 and 10.7 per cent respectively, the volatile content is 39.5 per cent, fixed carbon 43.4 per cent, B.t.u. value 11,525, and the fuel ratio 1.1 (average 15 analyses). So far as the writer has been able to ascertain, laboratory attempts to coke this coal have been unsuccessful and no attempt has been made to produce coke commercially. Tulsa District, Oklahoma (l).—All commercial mining in the Tulsa district has been by stripping from the Dawson bed, and production has never been very great. The coal is blocky, contains 6.5 per cent moisture, 36.8 per cent volatile matter, 48.4 per cent fixed carbon, and 8.3 per cent

Copper production in the. United States in 1972 amounted to 1,658,000 tons according to the USBM. This figure is up over 1971 but falls below 1970 production of 1,719,101 tons. This report is essentially about the status of copper mining operations in the U.S. and is an update and expansion of the report "Southwest Copper-A Position Survey" published in [A=], October 1965. At that time, the trend was toward using larger equipment to mine lower grade ore and toward the expansion of dump leaching practice. That trend continues today but, it is overlain by intensive activity to comply with existing environ¬mental legislation and uncertainty over proposed revisions of venerable laws governing mining. In the U.S. today there is, practically speaking, no excess smelting capacity so that expansion of copper production through the startup of new mines is inhibited. Owners of a large undeveloped orebody would have to decide before going into production whether to sell the concentrates offshore, which has many problems, whether to try one of several unproved chemical processes for producing refined metal from concentrates or embarking on the construction of a traditional pyrometallurgical plant in the face of considerable uncertainty over the pollution standards that eventually must be met. The situation is such that not only is the present rate of U.S. copper production threatened but the ability to meet projected increased demand in the years ahead may have been severely retarded.

IN a recent paper Kuczynski' studied the rate at which the crack between a metallic plane and a spherical particle of the same material is filled up gradually when heated at temperatures near the melting point. If x is the radius of contact between plane and sphere (fig. I), Kuczynski shows experimentally that x5 = At [1] where t is the time. Assuming that the mechanism of transport of matter is the volume diffusion of vacant lattice sites, he is also able to prove Eq 1 theoretically. The constant A contains as a factor the self-diffusion coefficient of the metal and he shows that the values for this coefficient deduced from his experiments yield the same activation energy as that calculated by other methods, which is a confirmation of this point of view. Kuczynski has also considered theoretically the law of growth of x which would be expected if surface diffusion were the important mechanism. He suggests that x should then obey a law of the form x7 = At, and claims to be able to decide the mechanism involved from the observed law of growth., The purpose of this note is to prove this incorrect. On the contrary, when the mechanism is surface diffusion Eq 1 is also obeyed, but with a different constant A. Following Kuczynski, we suppose the bottom of the crack (surface A A) to have an average radius of curvature p. As a result of this curvature the concentration of adsorbed atoms in this surface, n(p) per cm2, will be smaller, and the concentration of vacant lattice sites in the neighborhood, N(p) per cm3, will be larger than the corresponding concentrations, n(w) and N(w), for a flat surface. In the spring of 1950, just two years after the inauguration of the domestic uranium program by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, the company entered the uranium mining and milling business through a newly formed subsidiary, Climax Uranium Co. This was the first venture into a new field of mining for Climax, which became the first old-time mining company, other than the vanadium producers, to become active in the embryo uranium industry. Twenty-five years earlier, Arthur Bunker, president of Climax Molybdenum, organized and operated the U. S. Vanadium Co. at Rifle, Colo. With this background, he viewed the budding industry of the Colorado Plateau with much interest. Upon its formation, the new subsidiary entered into a con- tract with the U. S. Government and the potential uranium-vanadium properties of Minerals Engineering Co. were assigned to Climax Uranium Co. Funds for the construction of a processing plant and working capital were advanced by Climax Molybdenum Co. The old sugar mill building of the Holly Sugar Co. in Grand Junction was leased to house the extractive plant. Construction of facilities, which were based upon a new process developed for the treatment of both uranium and vanadium ores, was completed and the mill was placed in operation early in 1951. Subsequent to that time several alterations were made and the capacity of the plant increased. In terms of recoveries, the plant has proved to be one of the most efficient on the Colorado Plateau

BY rapidly cooling alloys from the liquid state, it is possible to obtain solid solutions beyond the equilibrium concentrations, provided that the components are miscible in the liquid state. Typical such cases include CU-Ag,1 Pt-Ag,2 CU-Rh,3 nickel-base alloys with silicon, germanium, and tin,4 and cobalt-base alloys with silicon, germanium, tin, aluminum, and gallium.5 In the present note it is shown that terminal solid solutions can be appreciably extended in A1-Mg alloys. The alloys whose compositions are given in Table I were prepared by induction melting in tantalum crucibles under an argon atmosphere. Both aluminum and magnesium were 99.99 pct pure. Weight losses after melting were less than 0.2 pct for the aluminum-rich alloys and less than 0.4 pct for the magnesium-rich alloys. From these weight losses it was estimated that the compositions of the ingots after melting were accurate within 0.3 at. pct for aluminum-rich alloys and within 0.5 at. pct for magnesium-rich alloys. As indicated in Table I, the compound AuCd10 in which there is an ionic contribution to the bonding. The authors thank Dr. J. H. Westbrook of the Research Laboratory, General Electric Co., for arranging the supply of materials and for his interest. This investigation was supported by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT(30-1)-1002, Scope I. some of the alloys were also chemically analyzed and the results confirmed the limits of uncertainty based on weight losses. Rapid quenching from the liquid state was achieved by techniques previously described.8,7 The principle of these techniques consists of propelling a small globule of liquid alloy (about 20 mg) onto a copper substrate. The thin foils easily detached from the copper substrate were analyzed by X-ray diffraction using a Debye-Scherrer camera 114.6 mm in diameter and either nickel-filtered copper Ka or iron-filtered cobalt Ka radiation. Since the back-reflection doublets were resolved, the wavelengths used in the computatioas were CuKal = 1.54050A and CoKa1= 1.78892A. Lattice parameters were obtained by extrapolation of the Nelson-Riley function, and the tables compiled
