Barite, or barytes as it is sometimes called, belongs to one of the lesser groups of nonmetallic minerals, of which 15 to 20 varieties are mined in California in amounts varying in value from a few hundred to almost half a million dollars annually. Commercial production of barite in California, according to the records of the State Mining Bureau (now Division of Mines), began in the year 1910 with shipments totaling 860 tons, valued at $5640 f.0.b. rail shipping point. With the exception of the years 1924 and 1925, when no shipments were made, the output has varied, reaching a maximum of 17,993 tons, worth $90,617, in 1927. The 1928 output was 13,406 tons, worth $55,888 f.0.b. rail shipping point, bringing the state total to the end of 1928 to 59,972 tons, valued at $313,930. Consumption of BaRitE in United States Crude barite sold or used by producers in the United States for the year 1927 amounted to 248,219 tons, valued at $1,594,423, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines.l In addition, there was imported, principally from Germany, a total of 70,274 tons, valued at $253,284. Manufactured products from these tonnages combined were distributed in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are at present available) as follows: ground barite, 57,658 tons; lithopone, 174,083 tons; barium chemicals (including carbonate, 4,960 tons; chloride, 3,541 tons; binoxide and sulfate or blanc Jixe combined, 13,354 tons). Missouri accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic crude barite, followed by Georgia and Tennessee, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia. George E. Collins, Nacoochee, Ga. (communication to the Secretary): The results tabulated below were obtained at the Reynolds mill, White county, Ga. They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.

The object of the following is to discuss a few of the problems encountered in the practical field application of reflection seismology. Very little has been published on this phase of the work and it is to be hoped that discussions will be presented by many seismologists who have met with these problems in the field. No attempt will be made to discuss the general principles of reflection prospecting, nor to outline the general field procedure. These phases have been presented more or less in detail in previous publications1 while economy of space and time prevents their being repeated or amended here. If, in the following pages, some criticism is offered of those who have already given their time and efforts to present valuable papers on reflection shooting, we trust that it will be accepted in the constructive light under which it is offered. We do not wish to give the impression that the following paragraphs represent ultimate achievement in field procedure; they are presented more to illustrate methods we have found satisfactory thus far. We believe that the following three subjects are inexorably linked with the continued future successes and more widespread use of the reflection method which, at the present time, is the most

In their account of chromium, Roscoe and Schorlemmer (Treatise on Chemistry, London, 1879) state that "In 1762 Lehmann, in a letter to Buffon, de nova minerœ plumbi specie crystalline rubra, described a new mineral from Siberia, now termed crocoisite." In 1786 Lehmann analyzed it (Nicholson's Jour., Dee., 1798) and found that it contained chiefly lead, and that the " mineralizers " were arsenic and sulphur. It was next examined in 1189 by Macquart and Vauquelin, who stated that it contained an intimate mixture of iron, alumina, and lead peroxide. The account of their work was published over the name of Macquart. Vauquelin (Louis-Nicolas) was a Norman peasant, who had studied in the village school, and at the age of fourteen was a laboratory-boy in a pharmacy at Rouen. Later, he found his way to Paris, and in 1789 was assistant to Fourcroy, a pharmacist and a teacher of note. It was here that he met Macquart, with whom he did the work on Siberian red lead, and at this time his friend Cheradame taught him his Latin.

The mechanism by which the supersaturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications.1'2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;³ at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate but that of a transition lattice . Sincc this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the (III) matrix planes with the [IIO] direction in the matrix parallel to the [II.O] direction in it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the (00.1) plane in y' are identical with those on the (111) matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures y' and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, y' is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructurc, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. Preparation of Samples and Experimental Procedure The preparation of the 20.2 per cent Ag alloy has been described2 Alloys containing 9.9 and 29.7 per cent Ag were prepared from 99.97 per cent A1 and 99.99+ per cent Ag using a similar procedure. Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include: land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys ; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the relative merits of the large 31/8 in. machine and the small 21/4-in. tappett machine in driving development-headings ; and although the . data here presented were obtained from cross-cut headings alone, experience has shown that the results are equally true in drifting, raising and winning. Recently we drove two parallel cross-cuts through the same formation, using a 3k-in. machine at the breast of one cross-cut., and a 2k-in. machine of the same make at the breast of the other. The results of this work afforded an ideal comparison, since in both cases the headings were advanced through rock practically of the same hardness and breaking-properties ; the amount of sludging was equal, and there was no difference in the condition of the steel or the machines, in the air-pressure or in the experience of the operating-crews. Some operators in the Cripple Creek district contend that there is ground which cannot be handled with the small machine, the holes being too small to contain enough powder to pull the ground, etc. The results obtained in working the property of the Portland Gold Mining Co., however, show that the ground worked by them does not fall in this class. During a period of two years there have been driven, with the small machine, 4 miles and 308 ft. of development-headings, through a diversity of ground, including Pike's Peak granite (a coarsely porphyritic type of granite), highly indurated, andesitic or phonolytic breccia, true massive andesite, trachytic phonolyte, tuffas, and along dikes of decomposed basalt and hard phonolyte; in every instance a satisfactory record was made. The headings here described were driven through highly indurated, andesitic breccia, having a hardness of from 5.2 to 7.2

A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8' ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,' dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,' carbon in a Fe,' and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith's data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken's model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry's law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound's discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms. ZrB2 was produced in batches of 4 to 6 Ib by interaction of ZrO2, B4C, B203, and carbon at around 2000°C in a simple graphite resistance furnace. Techniques of production are discussed and the final design of a suitable furnace is described in detail. Several other borides were made by the same technique and the process appears to have possibilities for commercial production. N seeking out new hard and refractory com- pounds, many researchers have turned to the investigation of the borides and excellent papers have been published on the properties of these compounds. Few papers, however, have appeared on the techniques and problems concerned with the production of these high temperature substances. This report describes progress made in developing a method for preparing zirconium diboride, ZrB2, on a pilot plant scale. The literature of the borides and other refractory hard metals recently has been reviewed, annotated, and classified so completely' that it is needless to attempt such an outline here. It is enough to say that three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB, ZrB2, and ZrB12.2 ZrB2 is the most stable of these and is especially stable in the presence of carbon up to and including its melting point of around 3000°C. Like most borides, it can be prepared in several ways. It can be prepared by synthesis of the elements, but these are expensive and difficult to produce in a high state of purity. Obviously, production directly from the oxides would have decided economic advantages. In electrolytic production such as that of calcium boride,:' the product is recovered as a sludge mixed with electrolyte; and separation of product from adhering electrolyte and regeneration of the electrolyte is an involved and difficult process. The work on borides was started on a small scale in 1948. Late in 1949, Naval Ordnance expressed a specific interest in ZrB2 and the project then centered on this compound. After the usual experimental work necessary in a new field, ZrB2 of good quality was produced by heating mixtures of B4C, ZrO2, B2O3, and carbon to a temperature of about 2000 °C in a resistance-type electric furnace. Over 100 lb was made for experimental use tests, and the method of production probably could be expanded into a commercial operation. A similar process has been described by Kieffer and coworkers.' The main chemical problems were the development of proper charges to insure complete reduction of the elements, determination of the proper temperature range at which these reductions took place, and adoption of techniques necessary to pre- vent inclusion of such impurities as carbon and nitrides. The mechanical problems consisted of developing a simple practical furnace that would attain the high temperatures required and permit use of a controlled atmosphere when necessary and determining of suitable refractories. Both problems were solved by designing a crucible resistance furnace. Crucible Resistance Electric Furnace Attempts were first made to produce ZrB2 in an electric arc furnace, but such a furnace would not provide the degree of carbon control required for producing clean graphite-free borides, so it was decided to try working in a crucible. Obviously, the furnace would have to be constructed of graphite, as the temperatures required are too high for other refractories or heating elements. Crucibles were made by hollowing out segments of graphite electrodes, which were fitted with a cover and clamped between two electrodes so that the current passing through the thin wall of the crucible would generate heat, using the principle of the Helberger crucible furnace."? Preliminary tests with this type of furnace were encouraging and led to the furnace design shown in Fig. 1. The essential components were a thin-walled graphite crucible resting on a graphite block, which formed the lower electrode assembly, and a top electrode assembly swung from a pipe column making contact with the top of the crucible. The space around the crucible was filled with graphite prepared from waste electrodes crushed to about ¼ in. This packing had excellent insulating properties, both electrically and thermally, and could be removed easily and quickly from around the crucible by means of an industrial vacuum cleaner. The largest resistor crucibles were machined from 8 in. electrode stock and were 26 in. long, with a side wall Yi in. thick and a 1 in. bottom. Temperatures were determined optically by sighting down a 1 in. hole drilled longitudinally through the top electrode and the crucible cover. Sealing this hole at the top was a water-cooled brass sight-glass assembly, shown in Fig. 2. An opening was provided for a light flow of helium to keep the sight opening clear of smoke, and a glass prism above the sight glass changed the line of sight to the horizontal for easier reading. More recently, the prism and optical pyrometer were replaced by a photoelectric recording pyrometer. At first the charges were placed directly in the resistor crucible but this meant that everything had to be withdrawn from the furnace every time the charge was emptied. A theoretical developtment is presented which provides a straightforward method of handling the drawdown analysis for both oil and gas wells flowing at variable rates. In the past our inability to analyze variable-rate drawdowns has been a major obstacle in using them for formation evaluation. This method should permit wider use of these tests in the future. INTRODUCTION Pressure build-up analyses are widely used to obtain reservoir data such as the effective flow capacity of the formation. On the other hand. although pressure drawdowns have been run for a long time, they have not been used extensively to evaluate reservoirs because they are difficult to analyze. One of the difficulties in analyzing pressure drawdowns has been that the theory developed until now has required the test to be run at a constant rate. For both oil and gas wells this is a difficult requirement to satisfy. especially during the early period of a well's life when drawdown tests are usually run. In spite of this limitation, drawdown tests are often run with build-ups as a check. In this paper a theory, which handles the drawdown analysis for variable rates, is presented for both oil and gas wells. Thus, one of the biggest deterrents to running drawdowns is removed, and they should become a much more useful engineering tool in the future. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS 011, RESERVOIRS The general equation used for describing the unsteady-state radial flow of slightly compressible fluids in homogeneous porous media can be written in cylindrical coordinates as where r is the radial distance in cm, t is the time in seconds, p is the pressure at r and t in atmospheres, + is the fractional porosity, p is the viscosity in cp, c is the compressibility in vol/vol/atm, and k is the permeability in darcies. There are a number of solutions of Eq. 1 for various boundary conditions. One of these is the so-called "point-source" solution, which approximates the case of an infinite oil reservoir with a well located at r = 0 and produced at a constant rate. MINING geology was granted two sessions, Wednesday morning and afternoon, Feb. 17. The morning session, at which H. Foster Bain presided. first considered Paul M. Tyler's paper, "Economic Notes on Steel-making Alloys." The elements used in these important alloys are chromium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, phosphorus, silicon, titanium, tungsten and vanadium. Edward Sarnpson and C. K. Leith asked whether chromite concentrates could be used, Mr. Tyler replying that they could if not too high in iron. G. W. Pawel said that they were used at Niagara Falls, nlixecl with coarse ore. In reply to a question asked by A. O. Hayes, Mr. Tyler said that molybdenum had not affected the price of tungsten. After this discussion, E. S. Moore's paper on nickel was considered. H. Foster Bain thought that nickel is well controlled and in good hands, technically and politically. The popular stainless steel in America is the 18:8 Cr-Ni metal. In Germany a Cr-Mn steel has possibilities. It is easy to make, cheaper. has better workability, will stand 85 per cent reduction between heats.

IRON ORE fields are situated in both the East and West of France (see maps). The eastern deposit is by far the most important from a tonnage point of view, not only in France, but in all Europe. The ores of this region are known as minette, and are situated in the Lorraine ore fields and the Briey plateau. The iron ores of the West are those of Normandy, Anjou and Brittany. Before the war, a large number of important German companies had acquired considerable interests in these western fields and a heavy trade with Westphalia had begun. Recently, however, conditions have changed and some of the mines of Brittany and Anjou are now idle. From a geological point of view, in Anjou and Brittany, a series of synclines extends from the northwest to the southeast, containing a number of seams of varying thickness and generally intercalated in Silurian and sometimes in Devonian formations. The ore is generally a hematite or a magnetite. The composition varies from 48 to 52 per cent of iron and from 8 to 12 per cent of silica. Con¬servative estimates indicate a con¬siderable tonnage of workable ores (150,000,000 metric tons).

From its modest beginning in 1957 with one mill grinding section handling 3000 tpd Pima has steadily expanded. In July 1966, work was completed that allowed the concentrator to treat in excess of 18,000 tpd. Almost immediately Pima embarked on another expansion program that will increase plant capacity to 30,000 tpd during the summer of 1967. This repeated expansion has corresponded with the development of additional low-grade ore deposits and with the improved operating economics realized by handling larger masses of material. Early in the life of Pima it was known that a mineralized area was present on the flanks of the high-grade orebody which systematic drilling had shown to be a low-grade copper orebody. Many months of engineering studies revealed that this was sufficient to allow Pima to compete with other large scale, low-grade copper operations in the Southwest.

Theo. B. ComstocK, Los Angeles, Cal. (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Blake's recent paper upon this topic undoubtedly partly explains the rationale of a part of the known facts bearing upon discolorat'ion and encrustation of rocks. His quotation from Humboldt, with reference to certain South American examples, may be questioned in the light of further facts, which do not appear to bear out the great traveler's theory of causation. There is no available evidence that the waters of the tropical rivers referred to by Professor Blake contain dissolved organic matter in the varying proportions required to demonstrate Humboldt's guess, nor do the concomitant facts in any manner bear out the hypothesis that the blackening in one case and its absence in the other may, perhaps, be traced to differences in the chemical reactions of the respective waters. Careful consideration of Professor Blake's illustrations, in connection with numerous personal observations extending over widely-scattered areas, convinces me that elements of

To note that environmental considerations had a major im¬pact on the minerals processing industry in 1971 would be something less than a profound observation. The degree of its importance was demonstrated by MBD when it established the Environmental Committee as a new unit committee within the Division to achieve greater participation in exchange of information relating to the technologies and problems involved. It is appropriate and necessary to devote special attention to this timely aspect of minerals processing, as its influence penetrates the research, engineering and operations of almost all unit technologies that comprise minerals processing. The pollution abatement aspect of this industry has been such a dominant factor in recent years there is reason to wonder whether progress in unrelated technologies has been curtailed. Perhaps so, to some degree, but unit committee reviews presented in this article suggest rather that it would appear to have served as a catalyst for accelerated progress in development of new methods and improvement in more conventional ones. Present concepts regarding primary metal or mineral recovery and by-product potential may change considerably as a result of improved technology in waste product treatment.

The temperature and strain rate dependence of the flow stress ratio and the stvain rate dependence qi the flow stress of annealed polycrystalline a zirconiur were determined over the temperature range 30 0" to 1000°K. Some evidence was found for strain aging and discontinuous flow in the temperature ranges 520" to 650°Kand650" to 760°K, respectively. The Cottvell-Stokes relationship was obtained when deformation occurred by twinning as well as slip. The flow stress ratio showed a strong dependence on temperature and strain rate above 800°K. The expevirnental evidence indicated that the rate-controllitzg mechanism for the deformation of a zirconium above 800°K was dislocation climb, and that the deformation was not thermally activated in the range 520" to 800°K. The stacking-fault energy of a zirconium was estimated to be about 250 ergs per sq cm. A knowledge of the temperature and strain rate dependence of the applied stress necessary to deform a crystalline solid is essential for understanding the thermally activated processes occurring during deformation.' Several experimental techniques have been developed for studying these processes.273 One of the techniques is the deter mi nation of the strain rate dependence of the flow stress at constant temperature. In close-packed crystals, it has often been observed that the change in stress due to a change in the strain rate varies linearly with the flow stress, (~1,' This relationship, known as the Cottre ll-Stokes law, is obeyed when deformation occurs by glide alone. However, when deformation occurs by twinning as well as glide, there is disagreement among different investigators on whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is observed. Whereas Thornton et ~1.~find departures from Cottrell-Stokes law when twinning occurs in copper, ~avis~ and sasinski? find that Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip in cadmium and magnesium, respectively. One of the main objectives of this study is to determine whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip. The second technique that has been used extensively to study the thermally activated deformation of crystals is the determination of the ratio of the flow stresses, at identical dislocation structures and con-

Discussion of the paper Of JAMES JOHNSTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133. CHAIRMAN E. GIBBON SPILSBURY.-I would like to call attention to the fact shown in this paper that less than five years or perhaps seven years ago nobody had thought it possible to cyanide with success silver ores. The cyaniding of silver and gold ores was first of all started in Mexico, and gradually extended to this country in the case of the silver ores alone. The average extraction, I think, for the metals in Mexico, in the case of the silver ore, is less than 85 per cent., whereas here, in the case of a very complex ore, carrying a high percentage of sulphur and arsenic, and other objectionable elements, the ore has been treated so as to extract an average of 95 per cent. of the silver contents of the ore. It is really a phenomenal revolution in the metallurgy of silver ores which has been demonstrated and worked out at the Nipissing mines. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Boston, Mass.-I would like to suggest a slight modification, perhaps, of the statement which is made that no one considered cyaniding of silver ores up to five, or perhaps seven years ago, because in 1897, when I was at Mercur, Utah, one mill near there was operating on silver ores. It did not operate very successfully from a commercial standpoint, because they did not have a great deal of ore, but the extraction, I was told, was very satisfactory, and I am quite confident that it was, because, as suggested by the name, Chloride Point, the ores were silver chloride ores, and of course very easily soluble. Some years before that, in 1892, I made some tests myself. I spent three months making tests on more or less complex silver sulphide ores at Virginia City, Mont., and while our tests on the plain sulphide ores, finely ground, were quite successful, on account of the presence of a small amount of copper we did not work out a satisfactory solution of the problem at that time; although since then a cyanide plant has been erected and for at least eight years these ores have been treated by cyaniding at Virginia City, and the mill is still in operation. The period of five to seven years should, therefore, be modified considerably, in justice to the pioneers in the cyanide processes. REGINALD E.
