The Ti-Al system certainly merits the investigative attention it has been receiving and this latest contribution by Blackburn is therefore to be welcomed. The titanium-rich end of the phase diagram shown here, as well as the diagram by crossley,17 Clark et a1.,18 and Tsujimoto and Adachi,29 reveal no other intermediate phase than Ti3A1, although a previous work by Ence and Margolin20 had reported an additional intermediate phase. Since then, Buerger Precession pictures of single crystals of 10.5, 11.5, and 12.5 wt pct A1 were made at New York university21 and the extinctions were found to be typical of a D6h a Ti structure. Some superlat-tice spots and/or streaks suggesting the presence of an Mg3Cd structure, i.e., Ti3Al, were also found. Since these specimens had been quenched from the y region20 and had revealed a Ti, it was concludedz1 that y does not exist and the structures interpreted as m + y could not be so considered. The absence of normal two-phase behavior in these structures had been indicated in the paper. Accordingly, the two-phase region y + 6 becomes a + Ti3Al and there is some agreement between the results of Blackburn and of Ence and Margolin20 as to both shape and existence above 900°C of an a + Ti3Al field. Crossley 17 proposed that Ti3Al is a line compound which decomposes congruently at 900°C. It is difficult to discount entirely the fact that clear two-phase structures, varying in amount with position in the two-phase field, could be detected above 900°C by Ence and Margolin.20 Precipitation during quenching could not have been so regular and the twin-phase syndrome17 does not apply. The heat treatment and quenching technique was essentially the same as was used by Crossley, whereas Blackburn, who used a rapid quenching procedure, also showed a two-phase a + Ti3A1 field above 900°C. If the two-phase field exists above 900° C, it is easy to picture a two-phase field which could account for the data of Crossley below 900°C without invoking a line compound existence of Ti3A1. All that would be necessary would be an 0 + Ti3Al/Ti3Al boundary which curved sharply to higher aluminum contents below 900° C. It is clear that the controversy must be solved by techniques which obtain data at elevated temperatures without quenching. It is conceivable that the difference in width of the a + Ti3N fields reported by Blackburn and by Ence and Margolin is due to the longer annealing times used by the latter investigators. It deals with 1) size distribution functions, 2) energy-particle size relationships, and 3) criteria for grinding efficiency. The method of analysis used consists of tracing the increase and decrease of successive Tyler scale screen fractions as grinding progresses. The treatment is based upon the assumption that the work done in grinding is concentrated entirely upon the coarse size fractions in the mill. It is postulated that when a feed consisting entirely of particles of one size fraction is batch ground that finer fractions increase at a constant rate as grinding progresses, until finally each in turn begins to be ground and to decrease in amount. It is shown that under these conditions the empirical Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann log-log size distribution plot can be logically explained. It is difficult to imagine any condition of ball mill operation, or any probability analysis, which would result in no grinding contacts on the finer particles present. However, the authors' postulate must be accepted if their conclusions are to be sustained. They conclude that the equation expressing the for mation rate of each size fraction can be resolved into the G.-G.-S. size distribution equation, and that the curvilinear portion of the log-logsize distribution line represents the only particle sizes which are being ground as well as produced. The author's statement that the G.-G.-S. Eq. 4 applies only to the finer portion of the size distribution while the Rosin-Rammler Eq. 6 applies over the whole size distribution range certainly supports the view that an exponential equation of the Rosin-Rammler type corresponds more closely to actual size distribution than does the power law G.-G.-S. equation. However, the G.-G.-S. equation is used to derive Eq. 8 and Eq. 9, which state that the energy required to grind a ton through a particular mesh varies inversely as the particle size to the exponent -a , whic h is the slope of the extended G.-G.-S straight line. This is stated to apply to both batch and continuous grinding. The G.-G.-S. slope exponent thus becomes very important in all crushing and grinding analyses by this method. The authors include some data which can be used to test their conclusions, as described below: We will consider grinding a feed composed of 14 mesh (1190u) to -200 mesh (74u). The average of 17 Allis-Chalmers grindability tests on quartz gives a work index (Wi) of 12.77. The -200 mesh product should have 80 pct passing 41.6u or P = 41.6. The equivalent 80 pct passing size of the 14 mesh feed particles is considered to be the particle diameter, as is true for spherical particles. Thus F is 1190u. In the work index equation 10 wi 10 wi 127.7 127.7 P f 41.6 1190 = 16.1 kw-hrperton. In Table I the ball mill exponent for quartz is 1.0 and from Eqs. 9 and 10: w=kw-hr/ton =Constan/(do/di) = 16.1 ton so that (1190) Constant/ Constant and the Constant equals 259. The tons per horsepower-hour value is 0.0464, in agreement with Table IV. The exponents for other minerals are listed in Tabl e 11. In Table IIA, the kilowatt hours per ton required to grind these minerals between the same sizes as the quartz, both by the authors' method and the work index equation, are listed. According to the authors kw-hrperton = 259/(16.1)".

DOUBT in anyone's mind that this is the age of metals, industrially speaking, could easily have been dispelled by attending the National Metal Congress in Chicago, Sept. 22 to 26. Iron, copper and aluminum; zinc, lead and nickel, often alloyed with each other or with some of a dozen minor metals, make the materials without which the modern world could not run. Science, pure and applied, is doing marvels in finding new mixtures, new alloys to meet new needs; in developing new means of rolling, fabricating, casting and welding metals cheaply-and effectively. These and related matters were the subject of 100 papers presented at 33 seperate sessions of the organizations that participated in the congress.

During the boom period of 1928 and 1929, several oil companies took advantage of high security prices to sell stocks, thereby securing money for the company very cheaply. Few if any of those companies realized that the money received was not at all cheap in view of the fact that it was for investment in fixed assets at inflated prices. Suppose a company borrowed twenty millions of dollars to expand its marketing facilities during the boom. It diluted its capital and acquired fixed property which could not earn its interest requirements during the following deflation and therefore consumed income from other company activities. The company also had to stand the deflation in the capital value of all the property it bought. Since the mistaken expansion during the boom accelerated the decline in net income during deflation, the financial position of the company was harmed in proportion to the amount of that expansion. Thus the company was unable to get money to buy fixed assets in the depression when all property is cheap. The same condition holds for the company that sold common stock for the purpose of developing potential production in a newly discovered oil field. Regardless of what the ultimate value of the new field may be, potential production does not increase the net income of the company. The difficulty of meeting the enlarged dividend requirements due to the increased number of shares outstanding impairs the financial position of the company during deflation in some relation to the probability of decreased dividends. This company also is not in a position to expand during the depression when properties and companies can be bought for a fraction of their real value. Expansion of fixed assets during boom times has been the ruin of many otherwise good companies. Some of those which most extensively bought property during the post-war boom have not yet recovered. A number of cases could be cited in sugar, leather, fertilizer and wool. This does not seem to be governed by the quality of the property bought, for examination shows the assets to have been of individual high quality in many cases. When recovery is long deferred it is likely to be true, as in sugar or textiles, that the industry has a large "potential" capacity for overproduction.

The objective of the model studies described in this paper is to determine the effect of planar discontinuities on the strength and deformability of a rock mass. A model material was used because it satisfied concurrently three requirements that available natural-rock samples did not: (1) low strength, which was desirable for minimizing the loads that had to be applied in the laboratory; (2) ease of producing test specimens with geometrically regular joint patterns; and (3) uniformity of the test specimens. The model tests were performed on specimens made from a single modeling material and tested under triaxial stress conditions with [u,=u,]. Results are presented in this paper for tests on specimens that had (1) a single joint set inclined at several angles to the major principal direction, including 0º and 90°, and (2) two joint sets that were mutually perpendicular, one set perpendicular to and one set parallel to the major principal direction. Several different joint spacings were used in each series. Future tests will include a series with two sets of joints that make oblique angles with each other and with the major principal direction. The results of model tests and tests on cores of jointed rock by several investigators (e.g., Müller and Pacher,l Moore,2 Krsmanovic and Milic,3 Hayashi,4 Rosenblad,5 Jaeger,6 and Lane and Heck 7, have contributed significantly to the design of these experiments, which are believed to be the first in which a comprehensive study has been made of the combined effects under triaxial loading of joint spacing and joint orientation (Fig. 1).

QUANTITATIVE knowledge of the time element involved in austenite transformation in a particular steel provides a sound basis for understanding and planning heat-treatment. Such knowledge is conveniently obtained by measurement of austenite transformation as it occurs at each of a series of temperature levels. The results of these measurements usually are summarized in the form of the now familiar isothermal transformation diagram (I-T diagram, TTT diagram, or S-curve). Although a considerable number of such diagrams already have appeared in the literature, there remain many compositions of commercial importance for which no I-T diagram is available. The diagram for many such steels may be predicted from published data with sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes, but for others no satisfactory prediction can be made because the effect on austenite transformation of one or more of the important alloying elements present is not well enough known. Such a steel is Nitralloy, Type 135-Modified, which, containing about 1.25 per cent aluminum, differs from any whose I-T diagram has been published. This paper presents results of a study of the isothermal transformation behavior of a sample from a commercial heat of this aluminum-chromium-molybdenum steel, together with pertinent supplementary data including the equilibrium transformation temperatures (Ae3 and Ae1), the temperature range of martensite formation, and the end-quench hardenability. These data are directly applicable to the heat-treatment of this type of steel and are of interest in revealing some of the fundamental effects of aluminum as an alloying element in steel. MATERIAL All specimens were prepared from a 13-in. diam bar forged from a 5 by 5-in. billet from a commercial heat made in an electric arc furnace. The composition of the bar was; C, 0.41 per cent: Mn, 0.57: P, 0.016: S, 0.005: Si, 0.24: Ni, 0.17: Cr, i.57: MO, 0.36: Al, 1.26. The forged bar was normalized from 1750°F (955°C) and then tempered for one hour at 1200°F (650°C), this tempering treatment having been given to facilitate the machining of specimens. EQUILIBRIUM TRANSFORMATION TEMPERATURES In hypoeutectoid steel the minimum temperature at which austenite is completely stable, Ae3, and the maximum temperature at which austenite is completely unstable, Ae1, are of great significance in heat-treatment. The year 1942 in Michigan was devoted largely to the development of fields discovered in 1941 but was also characterized by a great increase in prospecting for new productive horizons below the Dundee limestone. Some new fields were discovered but as yet these have shown few signs of being of major importance. Michigan's total production for 1942, of 21,754,000 bbl. of oil, as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, was second only to the record year of 1939 when 22,799,000 bbl. of oil were produced. All important fields were prorated throughout the year, and it is obvious that without proration a new all-time high would have been established for the state this year. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which started the year with ro producing oil wells, ended the year with 41 wells aid 1240 proven acres. Approximately 2,300,000 bbl. of oil was produced in 1942. Kawkawlin Field.—Although not a 1941 discovery, the Kawkawlin field has been actively developed on the 40-acre spacing plan during the last year, 42 producers having been completed, bringing the total number of wells at the end of the year to 77. Nearly 500,000 bbl. of oil was produced during the year.

ONE of the important mineral discoveries of the eighteenth century was , that of the Minas Geraes, Brazil; diamond fields. The production of this and of .other diamond discoveries in neighboring states made Brazil the premier producer of diamonds, succeeding India; its 140 years of supremacy finally passed to- South Africa- 60 years ago. Three times have diamonds contributed heavily to Portugal's somewhat checkered financial history; first in the sixteenth and seventeenth- centuries when the diamond trade of India was controlled by its citizens residing in ,Goa, later in the late eighteenth and the first 75 years of the nineteenth century when the Brazilian fields were the world's source of diamonds, and now, when the Angola diamond mines are the principal source of revenue of its colony, Portuguese West Africa. Certain phases in the history of the administration of the Brazilian field are sufficiently curious to warrant description.

Significant improvements have been made in the ursine systern for epitaxial vapor gvowtlz of Gds. The electron concentration has been reduced to below 1015 cm-3 with electron-mobility values as high as 7200 sq on per v-sec at 30PK and 60,000 sq cw7 per v-sec at 77°K. These high-purity layers have been successfully gvown on n&apos; layers with thicknesses as snzall as 1 p and as large as 125 p. Furthermore, high-purity layers have been incorporated into an structure without degradation of electrical properties. Different impurity gradients at the n&apos; to n interface were achieved. Using these structures, Gunn oscillators have been operated at frequencies as low as 0.4 GHz and as high as 40 GHz, which equals the highest valzle yet reported. The frequencies nleasured are in reasonable apeenlent with those calculated fron7 the n-layer widths and the transit times. CW operatiolz has been achieved from 3 to 20 GHz. In Gunn devices for >40 GHz operation (i.e., witk an n-layer tkickness below 2.5p), the n layer has been generally too pure to permit oscillations to occuv. ThE mechanism of the Gunn oscillator&apos; is now generally understood.2-5 Electron transfer from the (000) minimum to the ( 100) minima leads to a voltage-controlled negative resistance, which results in the formation of domains of high and low electric fields which travel through the crystal with a characteristic velocity of about 107 cm per sec. When a constant voltage is applied to the sample, this domain motion generaliy leads to oscillations at the transit time frequency, fT = 107/L, where L is the thickness of the active n layer.&apos; In this case, a single high-field domain is nucleated at the cathode and grows until it reaches the anode, where it is absorbed; a new domain then forms at the cathode.5 There are related modes of oscillation of the same device in which a tuned circuit causes a periodic variation of the voltage across the device. The frequency then may be either above or below fT. It has been shown that oscillations will occur when n • L 2 1012 cm"2, where n is the carrier concentration in the active region. At lower doping densities, 10" 5 n . L 5 lo&apos;&apos;, the doping is said to be subcritical for oscillation and the description of the device operation changes since the domains become comparable in thickness to the device thickness, L. Nevertheless, such devices have been found to be "active" and, in fact, are useful as amplifiers.778 For CW operation, one wishes to minimize the power dissipation, which is related to the electric field, E, and the low-field resistivity, p. Below threshold, the power dissipation density is approximately Typically, at threshold where E -- 3 x 103 v per cm, the dissipation density is 107/p watts per cu cm, p in ohm-cm. Furthermore, it is desirable to provide good conduction of the heat generated in the active region. The temperature rise, AT, across the active layer of a sandwich structure, with a heat sink on one side, is given by AT = (E&apos;/P)(L~/~~) where it is assumed that the thermal conductivity, u, and resistivity, p, of GaAs do not vary appreciably over the range of temperature and electric fields existing in the layer. This expression shows that, subject to maintaining an appropriate (n . L) product, CW operation is favored by a higher resistivity, a lower threshold field, and a thinner device. The above device requirements place some severe restrictions on the materials to be used, especially for high-frequency (>10 GHz) operation. Here, it is necessary to prepare very thin (<10 µ) layers of GaAs, in a state of high purity (-1 ohm-cm), complete with very low-resistance ohmic contacts. Problems of handling such thin and fragile samples become inereasingly severe as the frequency is raised. Furthermore, while good low-resistance ohmic contacts are easily applied to low-resistivity GaAs, contacting difficulties are encountered for these higher-resistivity materials.

DATA in this report enable comparisons to be made within the bituminous coal industry and comparison as well with copper and steel in respect to capacity and overdevelopment. The conclusions reached from the data will tend to correct numerous current misconceptions. The data have been prepared by various members of the Coal and Coke Committee of the A.I.M.E., from the most authentic sources avail¬able, and cover the period 1913-1924 wherever possible. CAPACITY AND OVERDEVELOPMENT Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from the U. S. Geological Survey sources, but partly from the U. S. Coal Commission reports. The mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date is calculated for each state by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators, and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times the number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method-one that the total number of men employed is used instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. Covering the first, the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and this condition exists at all times. Regarding the second, the opinion is general among coal men that 280 days is as great a figure as should be used, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate as when it is working part time. The capacity, as estimated on this basis, is much more nearly the true capacity, although even with present railroad efficiency this amount of coal could not be moved.

Resistive measurements ulere made on superconducting niobium single crystals in transverse magnetic fields. Crystals were grouln in both high and ulfrahigh vacua, doped with stnall quantities of oxygen, and annealed in ultrahigh vacua at temperatures from 900&apos; to 1350°C. Maxima in the fluxoid pinr~ir~g force were observedfor the [100] and [210] directions. The increase of the critical current density with dissoved oxygen was seen to saturate at relatively low concentration. This behavior, and the variation of J, and residual resistivity (as a function of oxygen content and annealing) of both clean and dirty gassy) crystals, is seen as a consequence of the formation of clusters with (210)~b habit planes and (200)ffo common boundaries. These suboxide clusters are apparenlly stable at high temperatures and very low oxygen concentrations. It is generally known that dissolved oxygen at concentrations well below the solubility limit sharply increases the critical current density of superconducting niobium.&apos; Such a result would not be expected if Nb-0 solutions were random, not even as the result of segregation on the scale usually encountered in solid solutions. According to the Kim-Anderson theory of flux creep,&apos; the critical transport current density is determined by the pinning force Fp associated with some feature of the microstructure. As the Lorentz force. a or (J X R), of the transport current in the magnetic field approaches Fp, flux creep and then flux flow occur. The pinning force is expected to be quite small if the heterogeneity involved is significantly smaller than tte range of coherency which for niobium is circa 250~.~ Although the strain field of an individual oxygen atom in the niobium lattice is relatively large, it does not seem plausible that individual atoms could be so effective as to account for the data. Also, ~ramer~ found that straining and strain aging specimens containing small amounts of oxygen on occasion decreased the residual resistivity. A possible explanation for the above behavior may be found in the work of van Ooijen and van der Goot,= who found that annealing changed J, for niobium foils containing oxygen, and they attributed the changes to ordering of the oxygen atoms. This phenomenon has been observed by other investigators using X-ray and PROCEDURE Cylindrical 4-in.-diam niobium single crystals with axial orientations [ill], [110], [112], and [oo~] were grown from pure niobium, see Table I for analysis, in an ion-pumped ultrahigh-vacuum system using the electron beam floating zone technique. Total pressure during growth was lo-&apos;9 torr: the oxygen partial pressure was less than lo-" torr, as determined by a mass spectrometer. These crystals will be referred to as the "clean" crystals. Similar crystals were also grown in another system at a pressure of 5 X 10"6 torr. These crystals will be referred to as the "dirty" crystals. Specimens 14 in. long were cut from the as-grown crystals and one end was polished down to no. 600 carbide paper smoothness. A back-reflection Laue photograph was then taken in order to fix the crystallo-graphic directions transverse to the crystal. The critical current density J,, the current density necessary to produce a voltage drop of 1.0 pv between voltage leads placed a in. apart, was determined as a function of the magnitude and direction of the transverse magnetic field and of the oxygen concentration. The technique and experimental arrangement was essentially similar to that of Tedmon et al.&apos; In the remainder of this paper, the azjmuthal angle $ for the field H is referenced to the [ I101 direction in all four crystals, and oxygen was added in small equal increments by anodization and annealing.7 The resistivity ratio, RR, of the resistance at room ternperature to that at 4.2"K (H =7.00 kG) was determined as well.

In the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Probably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section A0 at the start of the test, as a function of the strain e0, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwikl, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area A. a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain e0 = ?L0 is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?LO in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and e0 does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would be thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. Reed, the 8x8x8-in. square block was subjected to compressive forces from three sides, top, side, and rear. Let us refer to the stresses set up by these forces as Sz due to top pressure, Sy due to side pressure, and Sx due to rear pressure. At the section across the 2-in. hole (when failure occurred at 317 psi) the compressive stress Sy was equal to 317 x 8/6 = —422 psi, the top compressive stress S; is of the same intensity, —422 psi, and the rear compressive stress S, equals —317 psi. INCREASING attention has been given in the last decade to the possibilities of mine leasing in the West. The practice as described in this article does not refer to the leasing of entire properties for corporate operation. It is intended to deal rather with the advantages and problems incident to leasing portions of properties to individuals who themselves, individually or in groups, do the actual mining and transportation of the ore. These individuals are sometimes called "leasers" and sometimes called "tributors." The contracts under which they work set up an independent relationship of lessor and leaser, between themselves and the mineowner or operator. This relationship has many advantages to both sides over those created by the ordinary relationship of employer and employe. From the standpoint of the owners there is no liability on independent contractors for industrial injuries, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, or the manifold restrictions of the Federal Labor Relations and Wage Hour Acts and similar state acts where they exist. As the leaser&apos;s income depends on the quantity and quality of ore produced, there is a distinct incentive for maximum production of a good grade of ore. This in turn promotes careful mining of the areas under lease. Ordinarily in mining, labor cost is a high percentage of the total cost of operation. Under a leasing system, even if the leasers be allowed to retain half of the gross values that they produce, and the owner or operator gets half, in the case of marginal ore bodies this is ordinarily more than the lessor would realize if the property were worked by day labor. THE Clinton group of the Silurian holds the red or fossiliferous ore; its outcrops have been mapped by the State or U. S. Geological Survey. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama. There are places where it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step, faults bring up the ore in three or four separate ridges practically parallel. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. In examining some bore holes made in drilling for oil, the writer found the Clinton group continuing under the Warrior coal field wherever the drill has gone deep enough. It demonstrates the possibility of a source for red ore not seriously thought of until lately. The following bore holes made principally for oil, given in Bulletin No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 feet. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in section 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. The hole was continued by diamond drill from here. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton.

AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER and in greater or less amounts, gold has been mined in at least 40 of California&apos;s 58 counties. It may not be inappropriate, by way of introduction, to give a brief historical statement relative to her production of the yellow metal. The presence of gold in the gravels of San Gabriel, San Francisquito, and other streams near Los Angeles, was known and they were worked in a small way by the Indians, at least as early as. 1841&apos; and possibly 1820. -On March 2, 1844, Don Manuel Castanares, deputy for California to the Congress of Mexico, reported&apos; to his government that placers near Los Angeles had yielded up to December, 1.843, a total of 2000 oz. of gold dust, most of which had been sent (via Mexico) to tile United States Mint at Philadelphia.

THE Federation of Engineering Societies has been created for the sole purpose of public service. This initial meeting surely warrants some discussion of a few of the problems to which this organization, for expression of the --. engineering mind, can quite well give consideration. Some of the greatest of the problems before the country and, in fact, before the world, are those growing out of our industrial development. The enormous industrial expansion of the last fifty&apos; years has lifted the standard of living and comfort beyond any dream of our forefathers. Our economic system under which it has been accomplished has given stimulation to invention, to enterprise, to individual improvement of the highest order, yet it presents a series of human and social difficulties for the solution of which we are groping. The congestion of population is producing subnormal conditions of life. The vast repetitive operations are dulling the human mind. The intermittency bf employment due to the bad coordination of industry, the great waves of unemployment in the ebb and flow of economic tides, produce infinite wastes and great suffering. Our business enterprises have become so large and complex that the old personal relationship between employer and worker has to a great extent disappeared. The aggregation of great wealth, with its power of economic domination, presents social, economic ills which we are constantly struggling to remedy.
