"INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."

Criteria that suitable models must possess include: (1) input requirements necessary to generate large volumes ofprobabilistic simulations; (2) the capability to output injuries with the necessary details and resolution;(3) the ability to capture the variety of different scenarios inherent in an assessment; (4) acceptablecomputational requirements; and (5) sufficient stakeholder buy-in for community acceptance."

Higher coal quality is being recognized in potentially lowering the cost of power as measured at the bus bar. Assessment of potential coal supplies for most power plants is now going beyond buying at the lowest delivered fuel cost. It is now taking into consideration other factors, such as handling, storage, pulverization cost, boiler fouling, post combustion cleanup, and waste disposal costs. New measurements of quality are being considered now by those producing and those consuming the fuel by assessing numerous variables in the total fuel cycle to achieve the lowest possible power costs.

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2005 was estimated to be 653 kt (720,000 st). This was a 5-percent increase compared with 2004. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $179 million in 2005. Production was from six companies with 12 processing facilities in four states. California and Nevada were the principal producing states. They accounted for about 70 percent of U.S. production in 2005. U.S. diatomite exports were about 144 kt (159,000 st). Imports were negligible. The internal structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an excellent raw material for filtration, absorbent and filler applications. Filtration, especially the purification of beer, liquors and wine and the cleansing of greases and oils, continued to be the largest end use for diatomite. Other applications include the removal of microbial contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses in public water systems, and the filtration of human blood plasma. The use of diatomite as fillers and in pharmaceutical applications, including the filtration of human blood plasma, continues to increase as has its use as an insecticide base and as pozzolan. The relative rank of end uses of diatomite were filter aids, 75 percent; fillers, 11 percent; absorbents, 7 percent and other (mostly cement manufacture), 7 percent.

The industrial diamond review arrived too late for the June issue. Since the economy is showing a resurgence of strength, diamond tool consumption is similarly on the rise. Tool makers indicate that sales are picking up. They expect that 1994 will see about an 8% increase. Fabricators expect this positive trend to continue through 1995. In the industrial sector, sales of grinding wheels, honing stones, cutting tools and the like are expected to grow 5% and 8% during the next year. Users still are buying only those products necessary for "just-in-time" production cycles.

Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. "Madawaska Mines produces a uranium precipitate (83-85% u3o8) using a magnesium oxide slurry to precipitate the uranium from solution. The solution, at approximately 9""0 g/l u3o8 is neutralized to a pH of 7.0. At the Eldorado Nuclear Refinery in Port Hope, the precipitate is not acceptable as a single feed to the refinery process. It was discovered that a 2% silica impurity caused emulsion problems in the solvent extraction column.After extensive studies of possible solutions, such as two-stage precipitation and solvent extraction, an acceptable solution was found. The selective precipitation of uranium at a pH of 3.5-4.0 using Hydrogen Peroxide produces an almost silica free product of higher purity (90-93% u3o8) to that of straight magnesium oxide precipitation. Introduction Madawaska Mines Limited is located four miles southwest of Bancroft, Ontario. The annual production of u3o8 is approximately 610,000 pounds. To produce the final product or yellowcake, nine separate steps are required. These are (1) grinding, (2) dewatering, (3) leaching, (4) acid filtration, (5) clarification, (6) ion exchange, (7) precipitation, (8) washing, and (9) drying and packaging. To illustrate these steps, a complete flowsheet of the mill is displayed on page three.The yellowcake is sent to Eldorado Nuclear Limited in Port Hope, Ontario for further concentrating and refining. As part of their routine specification check, a test called the amenability test is performed. This test indicates how a particular dissolved yellowcake product reacts to solvent extraction. The Madawaska yellowcake did not pass the test."

Coal production in the United States in 2007 totaled 1.03 Gt (1,145.6 million st), according to preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Ta-ble 1). This is a decrease of 1.5 percent, or 15.6 Mt (17.2 million st) from the 2006 record level of 1.05 Gt (1,162.7 million st). Although coal production declined in 2007, U.S. total coal consumption increased for the year. Coal consumption in 2007 in the electric power sector was higher by 1.9 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 1.1 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 5 percent. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2007, while coal imports remained at about the same level. Total coal stocks increased slightly during the year, as some consumers continued to rebuild their stockpiles that had been seriously depleted in 2005 due to transportation issues. The growth in coal consumption during the year was primarily a result of the weather-related increases in the demand for electricity in 2007. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers) in the United States grew in 2007. Coal-based generation also increased, resulting in a 17.9-Mt (19.8-million-st) increase in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the nonelectricity sector decreased by 3.8 percent to 74.7 Mt (82.4 million st). In the international markets in 2007, U.S. coal exports increased to levels not seen in recent years while coal imports were mostly static. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.7 Mt (59.2 million st), an increase of 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st) above 2006. Coal imports in 2007 ended the year at 32.9 Mt (36.3 million st), 91 kt (100,000 st) higher than in 2006. Coal prices in 2007 were split, with most domestic prices higher for the year while the international prices were overall lower. This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Boltsfork 7 1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the study area. Results indicate that of the original 280.2 M tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 99.8 M tons (35.6%) is recoverable at a mining cost of $25 per ton or less.

The early part of the decade was marked by world-wide problems and economic difficulties. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter ordered the failed military mission to rescue hostages in the U.S. Embassy in Iran, Mt. Saint Helens, WA erupted killing 60 people and the Soviets and Mujaheddin guerrillas clashed in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion. Later in the year, Ronald Reagan was elected president, defeating Carter. The first launch of a space shuttle (Columbia) occurred in 1981. Also in 1981, the first IBM-PC’s begin to roll off the lines. In 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and Mexico’s economy was in collapse. In 1980, the U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.1 percent, and by 1982 the rate increased to 9.7 percent. 1980 marked SME’s first full year in its new office building in Littleton, CO. The new facility was dedicated in November 1979. Claude L. Crowley was executive director of SME in 1980 and remained in that position throughout the decade. SME’s membership stood at about 26,000 throughout this period (1980-1982).

"INTRODUCTION Sheet mica is one of the most important minerals in modern industry. It is used in many kinds of electrical devices, and up to the present time no satisfactory substitute for it has been developed. It is necessary for the successful operation of airplanes, ships, motor vehicles radios, and radar equipment. Early in World y r II, the Array and Navy, foreseeing the need for conserving the stock of sheet mica on hand and realizing that imports from India and Brazil were falling off, had strategic mica placed on the critical war-materials list.Examination and exploration by the Bureau of nines indicated that there probably are large undeveloped deposits of mica in Alabama, some of which are near the surface and others at greater depth. The quality of most of this mica is high.During World War I, Alabama mica producers added materially to domestic production, but after 1920 virtually all of the mines closed end miners scattered. During World War II, when imports from India, Madagascar,Brazil,,other foreign sources were reduced, sometime was required for Alabama to act into production. Operators began to produce small quantities in 1942.The Colonial Mica Corporation was created by the Government during 1942 to buy Mica for the Metals Reserve Company, end later Colonial was made sole buying accent for strategic mica. About this time the Bureau of Mines estab¬lished the graphite field laboratory at Ashland, Ala. Samples of mica wore submitted for examination, and advice was requested by property owners and mine operators. This continued during 1943, when as many as 400 visitors a month called at the Bureau's Ashland field laboratory."

THE ENORMOUS contrast between the mineral economy of Cuba in 1963 and in 1958 was the result of the overall Political changed to which the total economy of the country was intimately lined. Creation of the Cuban Mining Institute (Instituto Cubano de la Minería) to direct all mining activities in the country was an early act of the new Government after the revolution on January 1, 1959. During the next 2 years, the Government confiscated foreign holdings,2 including Unite States investments exceeding $1 billion in value. Foreign mining and metallurgical technicians-predominately from Communist areas-were brought in to reorganize the mineral industries. On January 3, 1961, diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States were severe and then on May 2, Cuba announced its full-fledged membership in the so-called Communist Bloc. Fifty-four international treaties assured Cuba of Communist economic support, technical and financial assistance, machinery, raw materials, and manufactures. The Soviet Union agreed to buy some Cuban mineral products, and Czechoslovakia stated that it would buy all mineral production offered for the next 20 years, but in both cases at prices said to be much lower than the world market. The mineral productivity segment of the mineral economy during and since the period of political metamorphosis, has withstood the political disruption better than has the economy as a whole, but with no direct measure of the magnitude of its cost. The overall economic record is marked with steady deterioration; the annual average per capita income has dropped from $374 in 1957 to $185 in 1963, when Cuba's deficit with the Soviet Union alone reached an admitted $1 billion.

Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines methodology developed to incorporate factors of coal production (mining and cleaning methods, recoveries, economics, etc.) into the definition of recover-ability of a coal resource. Project procedures and computer models that were developed to include mine and preparation plant production rates, recoveries, and costs are explained. The results of these procedures and models are reviewed and compared to the Energy Information Administration estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "demonstrated reserve base." The Matewan 7-1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected to demonstrate the methodology.

We believe that it will remain so as long as there are economic cycles.The fortunes of the industry are tied to those sectors of the economy where decisions can be postponed until more favourable times: automobiles, housing, appliances, inventory building and capital spending. Over the past two years, while U.S. GNP fell by 3.8%, automobile production declined by 31 %, from 9.7 million units in 1973 to 6.7 million in 1975. Housing starts plummeted some 43% from 2.1 million units in 1973 to 1.2 million in 1975. Little wonder that U.S. copper consumption fell by 37% and zinc consumption by 38% over the same period.With the rest of the world's economies moving in unison with that of the United States, it is also not surprising that times have been tough for mining.Arthur Burns, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, contends that each recession sows the seeds of its own recovery. The worse the recession, the better the subsequent recovery. If this is true, then the lot of the mining industry should improve significantly over the next two to three years."

THE briquet plant of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., at Lansford, Pa., has previously been referred to.1 It has passed. the stage of experiment and now rests,, on a foundation practically and financially sound. The purpose of this paper is to explain how success has been attained, and to set standards for the development of hard-coal briquetting which may eliminate future failures. All the conclusions are based on actual results, avoiding speculation and theory. Up to three years ago, the L. C. & N. Co. used coal-tar pitch as a binder in making hard-coal briquets. The plant operated with a monthly output of 300 to 600 tons and was unable to meet its own expenses. Naturally, no one was satisfied, especially as the ideals of a smokeless briquet were still unrealized. Then came the Dutch oil process, introduced in this country by the General Briquetting Co. of New York. This process uses as binder a small percentage of heavy residue of petroleum, which, being liquid, permits great economy of handling; it also did away with the most objectionable fumes of the former briquets. This oil2 is not absolutely smokeless; heating the fresh fuel to red heat liberates some low-volatile hydrocarbons, yielding a white smoke which is not objectionable. On the other hand, this oil adds to the briquet about 7 per cent. of volatile matter, giving the product a heating capacity equal to that of the best free-burning anthracite coal. The average silt used in the manufacture of these boulets averages 16.5 per cent. chemical ash, corresponding to 12,000 B.t.u. per pound of coal. The Hydrolene used as binder runs about 17,500 B.t.u. per pound, and approximately 7 per cent. of it enters into the mixture, hence 12,000 X 0.93 11,160 B.t.u. 17,500 X 0.07 1,125 B.t.u. A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6
