Equilibrium carbon monoxide pressures were measured over the reaction between chromium oxide and a number of solid ferrochromium alloys in the composition range 0.4 to 4.8 pct C and 0 to 49 pct Fe. Measurements were also made for the carbides Cr23C6 and Cr7C3 which agreed well with previous investigations. Between 1050°and 1400°C the pvessures varied from 0.1 to 56 mm and increased markedly with the iron and carbon contents of the alloys. The data were used to estimate the activity of carbon in the alloys and to calculate the equilibrium conditions for the decarburization of a useful range of ferrochromium alloys. WHEN ferrochromium is produced by the reduction of chromite with carbon in an electric arc furnace it invariably contains up to 10 wt pct C. For many purposes such as the production of stainless steel, it is necessary that the carbon content be as low as from 0.02 to 0.05 pct. Thus an important part of the ferrochromium industry consists of the production of low carbon ferrochromium. The classical Bessemer steelmaking technique cannot be used to oxidize low carbon contents in chromium and ferrochromium alloys without also oxidizing the chromium. Recently a new commercial process2-4 has been introduced for oxidizing carbon from high chromium content alloys which consists of heating the solid alloy with such oxidizing agents as Cr2O3, Fe2O3, or SiO2 in a retort at reduced pressures. By maintaining the carbon monoxide pressure below the equilibrium value for the system, the carbon can be removed as carbon monoxide without oxidizing the chromium. The equilibrium conditions for the decarburization of solid chromium carbon alloys have been determined by Boericke5 who measured the carbon monoxide pressure over the reaction between the various chromium carbides and chromium oxide. A typical reaction is shown below. Cr23C6 + 2Cr2O3 =u 27Cr + 6CO [1] These values are not applicable to the decarburization of commercial ferrochromium alloys which invariably contain major amounts of iron. The present investigation was therefore undertaken to measure the change in the equilibrium carbon monoxide pressure brought about by additions of iron to the Cr-C-0 system, thus extending the work of Boericke into the region of the production of low carbon ferrochromium. IN THE BEGINNING Contrary to popular myth, the personal computer can trace its roots back to a time before 1981 and the IBM PC. The seeds of the personal computer revolution were probably founded in 1975 with the release of the Altair (kit) personal computer, first advertised in Popular Electronics. June of 1975 marked the beginning of the Homebrew Computer Club in San Francisco. The founding membership list of the Homebrew Club now reads like a "Who's Who" of those involved in the early development of the personal computer industry. The Apple I computer was created by Steve Wozniak in early 1976 from the newly manufactured MOS Technology 6502 chip. It had 4,000 bytes (4K) of Random Access Memory (RAM] memory, a revolutionary amount of memory in 1976. Another early pioneer, the Commodore Pet computer, was another 6502 machine, but with 8K of memory. Tandy Corporation made its name in the hobby industry with leather kits. They embarked on a new path with the production of the TRS-80 line of personal computers. Most were based on the Z-80 chip, but again, were memory limited. A number of other Z-80 based systems followed later, including the Osbourne and the KayPro Computers. These systems were based on the Digital Research CP/M operating system and had a maximum of 64,000 bytes of memory (64K). The Apple I1 Computer appeared in 1977. Newer models of the original Commodore Pet and an Atari computer followed. These machines were also limited to 64K of memory addressing, and the early models typically shipped with only 16K, 32K, or 48K of memory. The Z-80 and the 6502 were the first truly commercialized CPU chips touting boxes with key- boards, monitors (sometimes a TV), and the ability to expand (peripheral slots for serial communications, centronics parallel communications, etc.1. They all shared one technology, audio tape as a storage media. The use of a portable tape recorder provided inexpensive, if not always reliable, magnetic storage. The tape recorders were typically finicky and required patience to use. Adjustments to the volume control were often needed to find "just-the-right" setting for loading or saving information. This kept the personal computer from being accepted in many markets, and gave it a reputation as a hobbyist or experimenters' toy. In early 1979, Steve Wozniak finished the design of a floppy disk drive and controller. This was a revolutionary design which reduced the "then" standard number of controller chips from fifty-plus, to just eight. With the advent of an affordable floppy disk drive mechanism, the personal computer was about to gain respectability. From a business standpoint, it was now possible to save and reliably retrieve business information. It also provided a superior means of distribution for commercially created software. Commercial software became a commodity rather than an oddity.

Uranium of the Grants region occurs predominantly in continental sandstones of the upper part of the Jurassic Morrison Formation, but significant lesser deposits are found in limestone of the Jurassic Todilto Formation and in black shale of the Cretaceous Dakota Formation. The deposits are disseminations that form runs ranging from a few hundred tons to several million tons. The ore consists mainly of uraninite, uraniferous carbonaceous material, coffinite, and such secondary oxidized minerals at tyuyamunite, carnotite, and uranophane. In sandstone, the ore runs were locallized by mudstone, interstitial carbonaceous material, and primary sand channel trends. In limestone, ore deposition was related to folds and fracture zones. The great bulk of production has come from the Ambrosia Lake mines in the Grants district and the Jackpile and Paguate mines in the Laguna district. The ores, which generally have been 0.20 to 0.30 per cent U3O8, are treated at mills operated by Kerr-McGee Corporation, Homestake-Sapin Partners, and The Anaconda Company, all in the Grants district. In 14·years after discovery in 1950, the deposits had yielded concentrates valued in excess of $800,000,000. Since deposition of the Jurassic host rocks, a geologic history involving tilting, faulting, erosion, changing ground-water environments, and oxidation has considerably influenced the existence and character of the deposits. It is evident that their ongm is not simple. However, a degree of agreement appears probable for a pre-Dakota age for the original ore runs, and, at Ambrosia Lake, two principal stages of ore formation, separated by Laramide faulting, are recognized. All earlier ores have been modified by Quaternary oxidation, solution, and enrichment during which time much secondary tyuyamunite, metatyuyamunite, carnotite were formed.

Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

Stillwater Mining Company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in the Bear tooth Mountains of southern Montana. Portals for the two access tunnels required at the new site were excavated in limestone talus to accommodate4.6 m (15 feet) diameter tunnel boring machines. A review of the technical design, field conditions and construction of the portals is presented.

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.

This report describes the use of the sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system for methane and dust control on continuous miner sections to potential users. The sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system is a modified water spray system which directs intake air to and across the front of a continuous miner to prevent build up of methane gas and dust concentrations. This user's manual contains practical information concerning sprayfan: a. Description and capabilities b. Design c. Installation d. Operation e. Maintenance. Underground tests, independent laboratory tests, tests by MSHA, and independent installations by coal producers have confirmed the performance of the sprayfan system. There are currently 150 sprayfan systems in operation in underground coal mines.

A mineral survey of a portion of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area (No. 5807), Trinity County, California, was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Approximately 8,650 acres (3,500 ha) of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area not examined for this report had been previously investigated by U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey personnel and published as part of USGS Bulletin 1371-B, (Hotz, 1972) Mineral Resources of the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area, California. The report showed that the section included in the rake Eleanor RARE II area contained no metallic mineral resources. Geochemical sampling indicated that the Lake Eleanor RARE II area contains no potentially important mineral resources. About 4,650 acres (1,880 ha) of the eastern part of Lake Eleanor RARE II area were examined for this report. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination and sampling of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. This area is underlain mainly by granitic rock and serpentinite.

In this environment, the Owner’s engineer would typically provide performance requirements for the design-builder, and the Contractor’s designer would work with the contractor to design the tunnel lining based on the Contractor’s means and methods and manufacturing process. This paper will describe the typical requirements provided by the Owner based on its design objectives, and the means and methods by the Contractor that would significantly impact the design. Project examples and recommendations for Owner’s requirements will be provided that can optimize the design and still achieve the Owner’s performance objectives.

In response to a request from the President, the Department of the Interior joined with other agencies in a comprehensive study of the land and water resources of the New England-New York region. As part of this study, chemical engineers of the Bureau of Mines have visited 1,025 mineral-industries plants to inventory the waterborne wastes of mineral origin, discharged by the mineral industries of the New England-New York region. Four-hundred and sixty-two of these plants disposed their wastes to a public sewer of some type, but waste control remains a problem for moat of them. The 1,025 plants are discussed in main industry groups according to their production: Chemical and allied products. Stone, clay, and glass products. Iron and steel and their products (except machinery). Nonferrous metals and their products. Electrical machinery. Machinery (except electrical). Transportation equipment. Miscellaneous mineral industries.

Decision theory is the formal theory of the logic of decisions in view of the decision maker's objectives, preferences, I beliefs, and available information, It usually deals with weighty economic problems involving irrevocable (or costly to reverse) decisions. Capital investment planning problems constitute an instance par excellence for application of the decision theory concepts. Decision theory as it is presently conceived has evolved in recent years. At first it concentrated on decisions in the face of total lack of information and on games with intelligent adversaries. The results of these efforts proved theoretically interesting, but practically of little applicability. In the last few years, stress has shifted to the introduction of subjective probabilities and preferences, and the results have been eminently successful in applications both in government and with- in business firms in the resolution of complex problems.

"Ore deposits containing rare earth elements normally contain small amounts of the radioactive elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U). These are the naturally-occurring isotopes U238, U235, and Th232 (and associated decay-series daughter products) that are ubiquitous in nature, and that contribute a small percentage of the natural background radiation exposure encountered by humans. The presence of these radioactive materials in the ore deposit creates potential hazards to human health and the environment that must be dealt with properly in the mining, processing, and refining of the ores, as well as management of waste streams and residues. This paper presents an overview of the environmental and safety issues associated with U and Th, with particular emphasis on rare earth mining, processing, and refining projects; the regulatory approaches followed to ensure that rare earth deposits are developed, operated, closed, and decommissioned safely; and the development of information during the project predevelopment work and permitting processes that feed into the design, operation, and closure of tailings impoundments and milling/separation/refining facilities. Case studies will be presented subject to the availability of relevant public information. INTRODUCTIONNearly all ore deposits containing economically-recoverable rare earth minerals also contain small amounts of the radioactive isotopes for the elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U) and their associated radioactive decay products. Therefore, the handling and management of these materials in mining and mineral processing operations must be performed so that workers and the environment are protected from harm from Th and/or U (and their radioactive decay products), just as they must be protected from any other potentially harmful constituents present in the ore or introduced in processing. Examples of these might include ores with high sulfide content, which may pose a risk of acid rock drainage, or chemicals used in ore processing and metals production.The purpose of this paper is to present information on how rare earth mining and processing projects with ores containing Th and/or U can be developed, operated, and decommissioned safely according to applicable regulations intended to protect worker health & safety and the environment.It should be noted that some countries are considering developing Th as a feedstock for producing nuclear energy, which could have some effect on future development of rare earth ore deposits. To avoid confusion, that issue is not discussed in this paper."

Coal production in the United States in 2009 de-creased to 972.8 Mt (1,072.8 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is a decline of 8.5 percent, or 90 Mt (99.1 million st) below the 2008 record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.8 million st) (Table 1). In 2009, U.S. coal consumption decreased in all sectors while total coal stocks increased for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2009 was lower by 10 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 30.6 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 16.6 percent. The commercial and institutional sector (which prior to 2008 had been called ?residential and commercial?) is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors and it declined by 8.4 percent in 2009. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports fell from the 2008 levels, while coal imports decreased for a second year in a row. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of the domestic economic conditions combined with the weather in 2009, which resulted in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2009. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 94-Mt (104-million st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the non-electricity sector decreased by 20.1 percent to a level of 57.9 Mt (63.9 million st). The international coal markets for most of 2009 were reflective of a worldwide economic slowdown. U.S. coal exports and imports both declined for the year. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.6 Mt (59.1 million st). This is a decrease of 20.3 Mt (22.4 million st) from the 2008 level.

This is one of a series of pacers being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These pacers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production cost might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called o this differentiation in order that there will be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Plainville plant of the New Haven Trap Rock Co., which produces annually between 275,000 and 300,000 tons of trap rock, Although pct the largest quarry operated by the company, it typifies the standard methods used by all the quarries in producing crushed stone and has one or two rather unique operating features. The cost of production at this plant is close to the average cost at all quarries of the company.

This report on the Venezuelan coal industry is the seventh in a series of studies on coal exporting countries requested by the House Appropriations Committee, The committee asked that the basic differences in mining costs for U.S, and foreign mines be identified, especially those costs incurred in complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.1 Basic costs in extracting raw coal are analyzed in this report for surface operations, This report also provides a limited analysis of the relative market competitiveness of selected Venezuelan and U,S. steam coal mines in three electric utility markets: New England and the east coast of Florida in the United States, and western Europe. Although some Venezuelan coal has coking characteristics, all coal-producing regions of Venezuela sell coal in steam markets.

The prevention of coal-mine explosions has been one of the chief purposes of the Bureau of Mines. In facti the first Federal appropriation relating to mining methods, in 1908, authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and the possible methods of preventing them. When that investigation started the mining industry had not determined the real causes of a succession of terrible coal-mine explosions in various countries, culminating in the great disasters at CoulTièl'es, France, and Monongah, W. Va. Coal dust as an agent of widespread explosions had been under suspicion, and watering to allay the dust was recommended by some mining engineers but the watering of coal-mine dust was adopted in comparatively few mines of the United States and Great Britain, and had not been introduced widely in any country except Germany. Rock dusting, another method of preventing explosions of coal dust, was early tested with success by the Bureau of Mines in its fist gallery at Pittsburgh and, beginnig in 1911, at the experimental mine, Bruceton, Pa. Several of the fist publications i of the bureau suggested that rock dust be used in gaseous or dusty bituminous mines, and in 1915 Technical Paper 842 strongly recommended it. Since that time additional tests in the experimental mine have fully confied this :ft judgment.

The minerals that enter welding-rod coatings and fluxes are the main subject of this report. Few mineral producers know just what minerals and what grades and quantities of minerals are required by the welding trade, and it is for their information that this report has been prepared. The various methods of welding are discussed extensively enough to inform this type of audience. Specialists in welding probably will find little on welding that is of value to them, but they may learn something more about the minerals or mineral products that they use. The authors did not find it easy to prepare this publication, and any needed corrections will be welcomed. Regarding welding, research, Jenks4/ 1 points out that while the process of welding in simple in operation, the phenomena attending its use are extremely complicated, and the efficient and safe use of welding requires an understanding thereof. Although the fluxes and the coatings used have solved many problems, many other problems require the joint effort of the whole industry; therefore, it is hoped that this report will be found of practical value.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 34,000 acres of the 58,040-acre Little Jacks Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-6) in order to evaluate the mineralized resources. The study area is located in Owyhee County, 10, about 21 miles southwest from Bruneau. No mining districts are in the study area, nor were any mines or claims recorded or found. The northern half of the area was covered by oil and gas lease applications; all were cancelled prior to 1985. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Little Jacks Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.
