The gypsum industry makes significant contribution to the wealth of our nation. This non-metallic mineral ranks in the highest order with America's most precious resources. Evidence of this is borne out by the fact that gypsum is a vitally necessary element in the building, industrial and agricultural industries. In 1967, the United States consumed 14 million tons of this valuable ore. Of .this amount 69% was required by the building industry for the manufacture of building materials. An additional 21% was directed to the industrial market, for the manufacture of Portland Cement and for other industrial uses. The remaining 10% was used for agricultural purposes.

The Cameco Key Lake mill began processing U-bearing waste rock from the McArthur River mine in 2000. This ore often contains elevated levels of calcium (>4% by mass), resulting in less than favourable conditions in parts of the Key Lake mill, yet still contains U3O8 at a concentration of about 0.3%. To recover the U3O8 and reject as much calcium as possible, modifications were made to the grinding circuit in late 2007 to include a gravity concentrator. The concentrator allows this mineralized waste to be processed separate from the regular blend material, rejecting calcium and concentrating U3O8, thus improving the operating conditions in areas such as SX. This will be presented in greater detail along with results and further work.

When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and, education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing mineral substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. In the 1970's, the energy crisis raised the national consciousness concerning our limited supplies of domestic mineral and fuel resources. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels.1

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

Phosphate deposits on the southeastern U.S. coastal plain have long been the major force in world phosphate markets. World markets continue to grow, but the role of U.S. resources is rapidly declining. This situation results from a complex interaction of economic, political, and environmental factors. Causes for this ongoing erosion of the U. S. market include 1) escalating costs, 2) changes in land-use patterns, 3) environmental pressures oh conventional mining techniques; 4) exhaustion of shallow, high-grade resources in Florida, and 5) increased, low-cost production in other countries throughout the world. In fact, some agencies and commodity personnel predict that the U.S. will become a net phosphate importer early in the next century. If this projection is correct, the U.S. industry must look towards major changes in the near future in order to continue to compete in the world market. One possible change includes development and application of unconventional mining techniques to cheaply recover vast 'new' potential resources in areas with lower land-use pressures. These 'new' resources include 1) deep phosphorites within major sediment basins of the southeastern coastal plain and 2) subsurface phosphorites on the continental shelf and within the U.S. EEZ. These latter resources include extensive deposits in Onslow Bay, N.C.; broad regions offshore of Savannah, Ga. and Cape Canaveral, Fla.; and the central portion of the west Florida shelf. The U.S. economy continued to expand during 1986, although at the slowest pace since 1982 when the current business expansion began. Real gross national product (GNP) grew about 2.6%, slightly below 1985 growth but significantly below that of 1984. The continuing expansion was fueled pre-dominantly by rising personal consumption expenditures as well as growing Government purchases of goods and services. Fixed investment, although positive, failed to grow at the rate of the overall economy. The trade deficit, which increased more than 30% over the record 1985 level, continued to depress economic growth despite significant declines in the price of petroleum and the value of the dollar. On a more positive note, domestic employment continued to grow--increasing over 2 million from the 1985 level--and inflation and interest rates declined. The unemployment rate dropped slightly to 7.0%. Of direct importance to the mineral-producing industries, expenditures for consumer and producer durables as well as investment in residential construction each grew faster than the overall economy, but investment in nonresidential structures fell more than 10% from the 1985 level. The level of real capital spending declined about 3% in 1986, following strong gains in 1985 and in 1984. Capital expenditures for new plant and equipment bottomed out in the second quarter and expanded in the third and fourth quarters. The decline in the first half of the year was partially attributed to uncertainty arising from the then-proposed tax bill. Also, there was little impetus for corporations to invest in new capacity since factories were operating at less than 80% of capacity during most of the year, in part because of continued competition from imports.

The industrial minerals industry in the Atlanta, Ga., area was studied in order to better understand problems associated with exploiting mineral resources in and near metropolitan areas. A method for delineating the Atlanta urban area and its component parts was developed so that the factors affecting the location of the minerals industry could be viewed mere objectively in the urban context. Major attention is focused on the area's dominant crushed stone subindustry Demographic and socioeconomic analysis of the Atlanta, Ga., area shows that expansion of the metropolis and its environs will probably eliminate potential mineral resources from the mineral resource base in the area, and that the expanding metropolis will be the primary determinant of future mining sites. Competition for land is accentuated to varying degrees by the incompatibility of wining operations with residential and other environmental requirements. Areas of consideration are suggested to provide maximum development of land and resources for greatest economic benefits it minimum social cost. Further research is recommended to determine market locations in urban areas, optimum operating levels for industrial minerals plants, and alternatives to surface mining.

Results of studies of reservoir and wax-precipitation temperatures relating to wax deposition in the reservoir of the Bradford oil field are presented in this report. During 1949 and 1950 Bureau of Mines engineers made temperature measurements in 42 wells, which indicate that the Bradford Third-sand temperatures range from 59.7° F., at 1,150 feet, to 71.9° F., at 2,040 feet. Reservoir temperatures measured at the same depths in newly drilled wells and oil-producing wells differed as much as 4.5u F. Injection-well temperatures measured during water injection showed that the temperature of the water entering the sand was 11.5° F. lower than reservoir temperatures before injection. The cooling in the formation resulting froth the injection of low-temperature water was 11.5° F. in the vicinity of the injection-well bore, and a maximum of 2.1° F. 200 feet from the injection well. Sand temperature, after 5 months of water injection, was reduced 1.5° F. 90 feet from water-injection wells. The temperature at which wax begins to precipitate from solution in crude oil was determined at atmospheric pressure for 26 samples and ranged from 51° to 67° F. Oil samples from wells producing no water had wax-precipitation temperatures ranging from 51° to 58° F. and wax contents from 2.20 to 2.97 weight percent, whereas the samples from wells producing water and oil had wax precipitation temperatures ranging from 580 to 67° F. and wax contents from 2.57 to 3.42 weight percent .

The Haines-Klukwan-Porcupine subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is located in the northern portion of the JMD and consists of the land between the Alaska-British Columbia boundary, the Chilkoot Valley, Glacier Bay National Park boundary, and extending south to the Davidson Glacier and the Chilkat Peninsula and Islands (fig A-I). This area was studied as part of the larger JMD study in a cooperative effort between the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS) and the Bureau during 1985 to 1988. Prior to this, during 1984, the ADGGS and the Bureau cooperated in a study of the Porcupine mining area and during 1981 to 1983 conducted separate studies in the area. Field work was conducted by foot, boat, truck, and helicopter. Figure A-I shows the Haines-Klukwan-Porcupine sub-area and shows the areas covered by previous Bureau and ADGGS studies. PHYSIOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE The physiography of the subarea ranges from gentle to rugged. Glaciers formed the major features in the sub-area and left "U" shaped steep walled valleys and rugged mountains. The Chilkat, Chilkoot, Klehini, Tsirku, and Takhin are the major rivers in the subarea. The higher mountains are glacier clad and some valleys still harbor glaciers that reach the valley floors. Lush forests and dense brush predominate up to timberline at about the 2,000-foot elevation. Low point in the subarea is at sea level in the area around Haines while the high point is 7,434 feet at: Mount Henry Clay in the Porcupine mining area.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. A preliminary investigation has been conducted to determine the conditions for the precipitation of phosphate from the liquor produced after a hydrochloric acid pre-leach and rare-earth recovery from a rare earth containing fluorapatite concentrate from the Nolans rare earth deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The results show that at 50oC the phosphate can be precipitated in two stages using limestone to produce a Stage 1 precipitate containing most of the impurities including iron (94%), aluminium (92%), fluoride (98%), uranium (84%) and thorium (94%), followed by a relatively pure Stage 2 dicalcium phosphate precipitate (DCP) containing only 0.05% Fe, 0.05% Al, 0.1% F, 0.01% U, and <0.01% Th. The initial Stage 1 precipitate contained about 25% of the phosphate while the remaining 75% reported to the Stage 2 phosphate precipitate. Depending on the required radioactivity specifications, the amount of phosphate in the Stage 1 precipitate could be reduced. Reagent requirements were 11.4 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre of solution for the Stage 1 precipitate and 39.7 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre for Stage 2. The analysis of radionuclide balance indicated that radionuclides deported mainly to the final filtrate (86.4%) compared to Stage 1 precipitate (5.4%) and Stage 2 precipitate (8.2%). Settling and pressure filtration tests indicated the precipitates were both readily settled and filtered. The final moisture contents of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 precipitates were 62.5% and 49.3%, respectively.

The present work reports a study of production of thorium concentrate from Egyptian monazite by decomposition of ammonium carbonate solutions containing ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes. These solutions were obtained from the processing of monazite by alkaline leaching in ball-mill autoclaves, followed by selective separation of thorium and uranium from lanthanides by autoclave leaching of the hydroxide cake obtained with ammonium carbonate - bicarbonate solutions. The separation of thorium and uranium in the form of thorium concentrate from their carbonate complexes was achieved by different methods, including neutralization of solutions at pH = 6.7 by acid, addition of alkali at pH = 11.5, heating of solution at 100°C and processing of carbonate solution with steam under pressure in steel autoclaves. Processing of solutions of thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes in an autoclave with steam causes their decomposition. Complete recovery of thorium 99.8% and 98.4% uranium recovery in thorium concentrate was attained at 120°C and steam pressure 2 atm, within 10 min. Meanwhile, the recovery of lanthanides was low and did not exceed 1.1%. The thorium concentrate produced contains 67.82% Th, 4.6% U and 3.14% REE. All methods achieve complete separation of thorium and uranium from their carbonate solutions, but the first two methods are unfavourable for the industry due to the high cost of reagents and their inability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes with steam under pressure is recommended for industrial application for its simplicity and the ability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate.

Phosphate mining and beneficiation in the State of Florida are presently being carried on by 12 different mining companies with a total of 21 mining and flotation plant locations. Their combined production of both washer rock and flotation concentrate was approximately 28,000,000 long tons in 1968. This accounted for 70-72% of the total U. S. production and close to 30% of the world&apos;s output of this mineral. From this extensive activity in the Florida phosphate field, one basic flow sheet for beneficiation of the ore has developed over the years as the most commonly employed. In fact, all of these plants with the exception of two beneficiate Florida pebble phosphate using a basic operation as illustrated in Figure I. The two plants which differ from this general approach are not using raw matrix as feed. In one instance, +14 mesh pebble is ground in a rod mill to release free silica which is subsequently removed in a cationic froth flotation circuit using an amine acetate blend and kerosene. This technique generally results in a 4-7 BPL unit upgrading of the feed pebble. The other exception to the standard flow sheet illustrated in Figure I is an operation which is beneficiating tailing piles. In this case, the material is first subjected to cationic froth flotation in order to upgrade the feed to a point comparable to normal matrix. Thereafter, after, the phosphate is floated in an anionic rougher circuit followed by cationic flotation of the silica in a cleaner circuit.

A rock mechanics instrumentation and monitoring program was implemented during pillar extraction at Gulf Mineral Resources&apos; Mt. Taylor Mine, the deepest uranium mine in the U.S. Three types of monitoring were employed: (1) drift convergence around stopes (using a portable tube extensometer), (2) stress changes in pillars (using vibrating wire stressmeters in horizontal boreholes), and (3) load changes in haulage ways under stopes (using vibrating wire load cells in jack stands). Results include convergence-time graphs, convergence contour maps, stress-time graphs, a stress increase contour map, load-time graphs, and abutment load limit maps. Major factors influencing results include (1) size of pillars around the extraction area, and (2) presence and orientation of a major fault adjacent to one extraction area. These factors, combined with pillar extraction, produced evidence of load transfer over 120 m from a stope measuring only 55 m x 45 m. Vertical stress increases of 7 to 17 MPa (1000 to 2500 psi) within 60 m of the stope were obtained using the stress- meter manufacturer&apos;s method. The fault apparently prevented load transfer in the down-dip direction but increased load transfer in the up-dip direction. Convergence rates of up to 1.3 cm/day (0.5 in/day) were measured at two stations. Instruments were generally reliable despite adverse underground conditions. The instrumentation and monitoring program at Mt. Taylor provided a warning system against ground control problems and a characterization of ground behavior for future development and extraction of pillars. Recommendations are made for future mining and instrumentation practices.

ABSTRACT Sooner or later, every producing mine faces the question of fill. This paper invites consideration of mill tailings as an economical, efficient, and quantitatively adequate source of such fill. Some of the advantages, disadvantages, methods of utilization, and methods of treating mill tailings for sand recovery are covered. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SAND FILL DISREGARDING economic com-promise, that material which supports the greatest applied load with the least compression is the best choice for fill. Table I, reproduced from U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 60, is offered as evidence of the adequacy of hydraulically placed sand. Table II gives the results of tests made in an effort to determine the reason for the difference between load hearing qualities of dry-placed and hydraulically-placed sand. From these, it would appear that hydraulic placing gives a denser initial packing, with corresponding higher, and faster development of, load bearing qualities. Assuming this to be true, then if sand from mill tailings can be placed underground economically, it is the superior fill material. Table III summarizes cost data available. The most cursory glance through the available references (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) will show .that the major benefit from the adoption of sand fill is a decrease in the non-productive fill ?cycle of a working place. This, it is estimated, increases the output of an individual stope by from 25 to 50 per cent. The advantage of reducing the number of required working places for a constant daily production is obvious.

A goal of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is the advancement of minerals technology through the development of improved metals and minerals processing. In support of this goal, the Bureau of Mines has developed a general method for preparing solutions from a wide range of metal and mineral samples for chemical analysis. The development of the method from current knowledge of vessel material, pressure dissolution techniques, and the fluoride-boric acid reaction is given. The method uses 7 ml of a mixture of HC1-HNO3-HF acids in a ratio of 3.5:2:1.5 sealed in plastic bottles that act as pressure vessels when heated in a boiling water bath. A final volume of 100 ml is obtained by the addition of 93 ml of a 1. 5-pct H3BO3 solution to the bottles, which are reheated; precipitated fluorides as well as sample residue are dissolved by the fluoride-boric acid reaction. A copper slag and a steelmaking slag treated using this method were analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy yielding values for Si, Mg, Ca, AI, Fe, Mn, Na, As, Pb, Sb, and Zn very close to certified values with an average relative standard deviation of 2.13 pct. The low cost, reduction in preparation time, ease and safety of sample handling, conservation of reagents, and ability to dissolve volatile materials without loss make this method superior to traditional wet digestion techniques for many materials, and ideal for use with atomic absorption, and optical emission or X-ray emission spectroscopy.

This report summarizes the program to develop and construct an improved light-scattering dust monitor (ILSDM). This improved light-scattering dust monitor, which operates on the forward light scattering principle, provides instantaneous measurements of airborne dust concentrations in units of mg/m. The program was divided into two phases. Phase I involved the design of the ILSDM which was reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. Phase II included the fabrication of a prototype ILSDM based upon the design developed during Phase I. After completion, the ILSDM was delivered and demonstrated at the Bureau of Mines. A description of the final ILSDM design, operating instructions, maintenance instructions and recommendations for additional work are also included in this report.

Downstream dispersion curves for certain trace metals were obtained from two mineralized areas in the southeastern U. S. In Lincoln Co., Georgia, 7 sample sets were collected downstream from the Magruder mine, a polymetallic sulfide deposit (Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag-Au) in metavolcanic rocks. Five sample sets were collected along Joe Mill Creek in Grainger Go., Tennessee, downstream from a zone of zinc mineralization in carbonate rocks (Mississippi Valley-type). In both areas, analyses were made of Fe-Mn oxide coatings on lithic fragments and quartz pebbles, and the -80 mesh fraction of the stream sediment. A comparison of the dispersion curves reveals the following: 1.) the anomaly/background ratio is markedly higher in the Fe-Mn oxide coatings for zinc and copper; 2.) the anomaly/background ratlo is markedly higher in the -80 mesh fraction for lead which is not concentrated in the coatings; and, 3.) the Zn/Mn and Cu/Mn ratios in the coatings are useful in that they enhance downstream derectability of mineralization as well as provide for a simpler analytical procedure. There are several potential advantages of using coatings vs. the conventional -80 mesh fraction in stream sediment surveys. Because soluble metal is brought into the stream mainly in groundwater, deeper anomaly sources may be detectable from the oxide coatings than from clastic fractions of alluvium where much of the metal is derived from erosion of soils. Variability due to sampling may also be reduced, providing better discrimination of anomalies. In areas of glacial or alluvial cover, coating surveys may be particularly applicable.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In order to throw some light on this interesting subject, a series of experiments were made with strips of mild steel, containing about 0.14 per cent. of C and 0.22 per cent. of Ma. These strips were thoroughly cleaned and brightened before use, salts were added to distilled water until it corresponded as nearly as possible to the analysis given by Mr. Lee, and in this water at different temperatures were placed four strips of steel; while four other strips, at corresponding temperatures, were placed in the water used at the Washoe Reduction Works. The latter plant has had no trouble from corrosion of furnace-jackets, pipe-lines or boilers. The analysis of the water used at the Washoe works is: Grains er U. S. Gallon. CaCO3........... 2.92 CaSO3........... 0.76 MgCI3........... 0.64 MgCO3........... 0.58 A1203........... 0.12 Fe2O3........... 0.12 SiO2........... 0.58 NaCl........... 0.35 Organic matter, etc.,........ 1.16 7.23 This water is neutral to litmus; while the artificial Copper Queen water was very slightly alkaline, which Mr. Lee informs us is also true of the water at Douglas. Both waters mere well aerated by pouring from beaker to beaker, and by blowing in air from the experimenter&apos;s lungs. The results of these tests, given in Table I., show that there is no significant difference between the effects of the two waters.
