During the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of streamlined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other industries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phosphorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater importance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appearance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements. In addition to questions of quality, the subject of cost has greatly altered the southern furnaceman's viewpoint on many things. Investigations conducted by the Bureau of Dines pertaining to the reduction of evaporation losses of petroleum have shown that such losses may be reduced 70 to 80 per cent by the use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with vacuum and pressure relief valves, and vapor-tight thief hitches. Additional studies have shown that it is often economical to supplement this type of construction with other measures that will reduce evaporation losses still further. Water-cooling systems, insulation, and light colored paints are the measures most often used in connection with vapor-tight tanks. Painting with light colored paints probably is employed in the greater number of cases. On account of the cost of insulation, or of installing water cooling systems, the use of these methods are restricted to tanks containing gasoline or crude petroleum with a very large content of low-boiling fractions. The effect of cooling systems has been discussed in a previous report.2 In choosing paints for tanks many factors must be considered. Probably the three most important are cost, protective value, and color. Many companies have adopted a standard color for all of their tanks in this way they reduce the initial cost of paint by buying in large quantities. The tank farms of such companies usually have a neat appearance, resulting from the uniform painting of all tanks. This procedure also has advertising value. Unfortunately, most of the paints used to protect steel are of the darker colors, usually red or black. These colors accelerate the rate of evaporation. Several companies have solved this difficulty by using a dark colored metal-protective paint as a primer coat, and a paint of any desired color for the final coat. Special metal-protective primers to be used under light-colored cover coats have been placed on the market by several paint manufacturing companies.

Mine to Mill (MTM) optimisation, a total systems approach to the reduction of energy and cost in mining and mineral processing operations, is well-established technology. However, successful applications of MTM optimisation have been largely confined to gold, copper and lead/zinc semi autogenous grinding (SAG) operations, where the goals of tweaking the blast design to increase fines and hence throughput through the mill have been relatively easy to meet. The application of MTM optimisation in a more demanding environment, like that of a multi-stage crushing and screening aggregate operation, was conceived as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) initiative in 2004, aiming to reduce the energy consumption in the US aggregates industry. Two quarries operated by the Luck Stone Corporation of Richmond, Virginia, were selected for the demonstration sites. Dealing with ore variability and a requirement to maintain a fixed feed size distribution to the tertiary plant, whilst still aiming to increase yields of saleable products, presented some unique challenges. Despite these variables, the implementation of the MTM approach at Luck StoneÆs aggregate plant in Pittsboro, North Carolina, has led to a tangible improvement in productivity, particularly in the primary and secondary plants. The successful outcome was dependent upon several key factors, including reliable blasting and processing models, careful analysis of the rock conditions and plant configuration, understanding and buy-in from the Luck Stone operations staff, excellent collaboration with Virginia Tech staff and students, and long-term monitoring made possible through comprehensive PLC logging. This paper presents a review of the work conducted at the Pittsboro quarry and highlights the key reasons behind the successful implementation of the MTM approach in a complex plant environment.

After the war that was nearing an end In early 1945, regular consulting work for Bralorne, the Bradleys, Pennsalt Chemical Co., and a directorship and occasional consulting for Homestake Mining Co. made it almost certain that in spite of my 61 years I would have enough work to feed my family. But this routine work would not provide enough income to lay up funds for the inevitable future when I could no longer do arduous work. And it would not give me the adventure that had first lured me into mining. Therefore I was greatly relieved as well as pleased when, in the 18 months from April 1945 to November 1946, I was asked to make three of the most adventurous as well as profitable examinations that ever came my way. Pati[n]o Mines, Bolivia The first of the exciting jobs was an examination of the Pati[n]o tin mines in Bolivia. After I had unsuccessfully tried to induce Anaconda to purchase these mines In 1915, the World War I crisis that had forced the half-Indian accountant to try to sell the mines had come to an end. The European market for tin improved dramatically, and "Don Simon" was able to borrow money for expenses while the concentrates were still In Bolivia. He took advantage of the favorable conditions by buying adjacent properties and increasing development work until his Bolivian tin mines were the greatest in the world. And his daughter had marled the French Count de Boisrouvain and was cutting a swath In high International society. Pati[n]o wanted to get rid of the drudgery of running a complicated mining Industry in a remote area In Bolivia when the fleshpots of Paris were much more seductive. An added incentive was the fact that his miners had become unruly and had even threatened his 11fe.

There will be 3 billion people moving into cities by 2050. Permitting is both the biggest obstacle and the biggest opportunity for mining. The problem is not if we have the right minerals, but how we can permit and produce it in a ?Sustainable? manner. A ?Permit? and a ?Sustainable Development Plan? may soon be the same thing. How do we produce the minerals we need with: 1. The lowest possible carbon footprint. 2. Social license from community outreach by being a catalyst and not a problem in a ?Green World.? 3. Enhanced water supply during all stages of production. 4. Meeting requirements of our customers for service, quality, & cost. How important is it to have a complete ?Sustainable Development Program?? First, no plan is complete!!! It is a work in progress subject to continuous improvement. We need to work together to get the results we want. The goal of the world communities is to become carbon neutral by 2050. What is the mining community?s goal? Do we have one???? When a Clorox, Colgate Palmolive, Wal-Mart, Toyota, or Caterpillar buys a product, what are your chances of getting an order without a good program in place? The answer is it will be difficult or impossible shortly and you will be requiring the same thing with your suppliers. This is an opportunity if you are in the lead and it soon will be a necessity for most mining and processing companies requiring much extra effort to catch up. For some mines it was a necessity to get most of the SD plan to get permitted. The number of companies in the extractive industries with a full Sustainable Development Programs is expanding rapidly as shareholder demands for transparency continue to grow.

"The purpose of this paper is to report in a general way on the use of the Portaspec X Ray Spectrograph.At Manitou Barvue, we are milling two types of ores, copper and zinc. The control assay practice was to take grab samples at 4 hour intervals. These samples were dried in the mill, then taken over to the Assay Office where two operators would process them. Three hours later results were available at almost the same time as the operator was ready to take his set of grabs again, leaving no time for adjustments, if any were needed.After a reduction of personnel, there were no assays available on night shift. This practice was slow and inadequate, and a new way of doing control assays was investigated.After investigation the Portaspec was found suitable for the type of operation that we had in mind. The Portaspec is a conventional dispersive type of X Ray spectrograph. The instrument consists of three parts:The Power Supply The Spectrographic Head The Digital ScalerIn our case, where dried powder samples are analyzed, the instrument was provided with a two sample holder using one for the standard and the other for the sample. The operation of the instrment does not require any degree of skill or knowledge of chemistry or spectrography.Previous to buying the instrument, six sets of six to ten samples were sent to the supplier along with the assay for each sample. These samples were Cu. HDS., Cu. Conc., Cu. tls, - Zn. HDS., Zn. Conc., Zn. tls. A definite pattern was observed. For example - six Cu. HDS. samples ranging from .40 to .90 gave 10400 counts for the lowest to 16.040 counts for the highest. The number of counts were then plotted to give percentages."

J. L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-If a nickel anode is cast under commer-cial conditions, will it contain nickel oxide? Will the nickel oxide affect the rate of corrosion in a double sulfate solution; or will the nickel oxide dissolve in a double sulfate solution? I would also like to ask whether a 98 per cent. pure nickel anode will corrode as fast as a 96 per cent. nickel anode; whether electrolytic nickel will corrode less rapidly than nickel containing a small amount of carbon; and whether the materials some-times used in coating molds for casting nickel anodes will affect the rate of corrosion of the anode? In other words, whether an electrically non conducting coating is likely to be present that will prevent the nickel anode from corroding rapidly. JOHN F. THOMPSON.-The nickel oxide will not dissolve in the double sulfate solution, as far as we know. We do not make the ordinary nickel anode of commerce, but we supply nickel to the nickel anode makers. Those makers almost invariably buy a high-carbon nickel shot, ranging around 0.45 per cent. carbon. In their process, they even further, car-burize it so as to get nickel that will melt easily and be fluid enough to fill the mold, so that the ordinary cast anode on the market is unquestion-ably oxide free. The only time that such an anode will have oxide will be through an error in melting. Some cupola makers of anodes have had trouble with oxidation, but as a rule the anodes are thoroughly carburized; so much so that they probably carry a couple of per cent. of carbon of which around. 1.6 per cent. is graphite.

Computers and computer applications in geophysics are fairly recent innovations. The area of data handling is one that has found many immediate applications. Initially, the use of computers involved in almost all cases, a batch-input arrangement requiring a trip to the local computer center, a wait and another trip. Even though the computer worked at incredible speeds, the time-delays, in case an error in the input data developed, often could be several days. Use of computers in mining exploration by medium-sized or small-sized companies and contractors has been almost non-existent beyond simple data reduction work. The principle J. R. Sturgul, SME member, and J. C. Wynn, both affiliated with the Dept. of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, presented this paper at the Eleventh International Symposium on Computer Applications in the Minerals Industry, reasons appear to be the time factor and the inconvenience of the frequent trips involved. With the advent of time sharing systems, whereby a company need only have access to a terminal, the main objections can be overcome. An Apparent Solution An apparent solution to the time and distance inconveniences which would permit more extensive use of computers in geophysical exploration, is to buy or lease/purchase a medium-sized computer and install it in or near one's office. This is a formidable proposition in terms of cost and programming time on both respects, but several mining companies of larger size have already gone this route. In most cases, the computers have been expensive devices with a limited memory or core size. For routine data handling this memory size is not restrictive; however, for many geophysical applications such as three-dimensional modeling this can be critical.

This is the story of the Carlton Mill. But first-a little geography. For those who do not know where the Carlton Mill is, or, perhaps, have only a vague idea, its location is indicated in Figure 1. The plant is situated on the road between the two old mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor, 10 the west of Colorado Springs. From Denver, it's about 110 miles by road. The story of the Carlton Mill began with the discovery of gold at Cripple Creek in 1890. This discovery set off a major boom such that, by the turn of the century, there were 450 separate operating mines in the district. Gold production boomed early and declined rather rapidly as indicated by the graph in Figure 2. Significant factors affecting production are shown on the graph-the raising of the gold price in 1934 from $20.67 to $35.00 per ounce and the government executive order L-208 in 1942 requiring the closure of all gold mines.

"Large variability of ore types, escalating variables operating costs and increased throughput require large investment in sensors and systems in mineral processing operations. Mining and mineral processing plants collect and manage more data than a small city with much in real-time. The data is changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets, and reengineer their staff, the structure and tools that were used to understand this data is lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a smart operation. When data is recognized as a critical asset and managed as part of an infrastructure, it become a key enabler to help transform the entire operations. In many situations, all partners in business collaboration—such as join ventures, contract manufacturer, expert service providers, and operations and maintenance companies—need access to production and asset data. The emergence and maturation of Cloud technologies make it possible to easily connect the plants to external equipment suppliers and operational support service.This paper will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new data strategies such as self-service business intelligence, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main challenges in mineral and metallurgical processing plants is effective energy and water management. The lowering of ore grades requires higher throughputs while the ores are getting more complex with variable mineralogical compositions. Electrical energy supply is becoming a restriction in many countries. Rising water management costs has a direct impact on the profitability of the operations. Grade recovery versus energy consumption in copper production for both open pit and underground mines has been described by Fuerstenau (2001). Comminution uses over 55% of the energy to produce nonferrous metals while other operations require much less energy (Nelson, Richins, & Lelinski, 2013)."

Erwin S. SperRy, Bridgeport, Conn.: The analysis of refined copper is a subject of great importance, and has not received the attention it deserves. Copper metallurgists, therefore, will welcome the paper of Mr. Heath with satisfaction. The state of the art of the chemical analysis of copper has been such that consumers, if they could not afford to run any risk, have been obliged to buy copper from the smelter having the best reputation, and a specification for copper to meet certain requirements could not be drawn up by the mere giving of the chemical constituents. Mr. Heath has brought the analysis of the copper to such a state that when a specification calls for copper " equal to Lake copper " one will know immediately what percentage of the pure metal to expect. It seems to be a pretty well established fact that the copper of Lake Superior is practically free from antimony and bitmuth ; and, with the exception of arsenic, the other elements are easily separated from copper by electro-deposition in an acid solution. The authorities differ in regard to the question whether antimony is deposited with the copper in an acid solution. Classen* recommends the employment of a solution containing 10 per cent. of free nitric acid, sp.gr.1.21, and the strength of the current from 0.3 to 0.4 ampere, in order to prevent the other metals from being deposited with the copper; and for this reason, I presume, the method has been generally used. I, myself, have been accustomed to use such a solution for the analysis of copper-alloys, but have found that for such alloys only a small quantity of nitric acid is necessary, if sulphuric acid is present in sufficient amount to give the solution the required conductivity.

WHAT I would like to do is to talk for a while tonight about the Canadian mining industry in wartime-at least, the Canadian mining industry as viewed through the eyes of the Metals Controller. There is nothing quite like the Canadian system in the system of controls in the United States, because the Canadian Controller combines the functions of a good many of the organizations here. I think the nearest counterpart would be the Divisional Chiefs of the WPB-although they have perhaps less authority and operate in a somewhat narrower field. My own field, as you know, is the metals and minerals-all of them, as a matter of fact, with the exception of steel and iron and coal and oil. And as I am responsible for supplies not only from domestic sources but also from foreign sources, I exercise most of the functions of the WPB and some of the functions of the Board of Economic Warfare. As my department is also responsible for stock-piling and for the financing of new operations, I therefore exercise some of the functions of the Metals Reserve and also of the Defense Plants Corporation. Being an administrator under the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, I also have the same function in relation w the price of metals as the OP A. The Canadian system of controls is compact, relatively simple, and I believe reasonably efficient. I think two of the reasons for that are that both the Controllers and the Directors of production are clothed with very wide authority, and also the fact that all the buying for the three arms of the service is done through the Department of Munitions and Supply, of which we are a part.

In 1556, Agricola noted that "a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him"(1). In today's world, the owner rarely has the opportunity to visit the mine and, instead of reading about the `nature of the vein' in annual reports, prospectuses, government publications, et cetera he sees the words `reserves' and `resources'. Unfortunately, the subject of reserves and resources has become increasingly complex and Canadians, along with their counterparts in Australia and elsewhere, are still struggling with definitions which will attempt to cover all conceivable circumstances from national or regional resource endowment to the material to be extracted next week from a given stope or open pit bench. The providers and recipients of reserve and resource data are: - Government agencies who are concerned with questions of national endowment, strategic use of raw materials and other questions of public policy. - Stockholders who have a vested interest in the basic assets of their companies. - Financiers who are concerned about the security of their loans. - Regulatory bodies whose function is to protect a frequently naive investor from unscrupulous practices. - Management, at head office and on-site, who need basic information for decision-making, whether it be to open up a new mine, expand or close an existing operation, acquire or merge with other entities, or, more mundanely, for routine mine planning. To satisfy their demands with unanimously accepted definitions is a formidable task but, it is my impression that, little by little, a concensus appears to be growing within the industry.

The Institute is one of the five national societies that joined in organizing the Congress, the others being the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Each society has pledged from its general funds or some special fund a certain sum to guarantee the success of the Congress. To this the engineers resident on the Pacific Coast added $13,000, the total guarantee fund amounting to $37,000. It is hoped that this money, iii part or in whole, can be repaid to the guarantors of the Congress. The sums necessary to conduct the latter and to publish the proceedings, are to be derived from membership fees paid equally by all participating. A member of the Institute as such is not a member of the Congress and will not receive any of the publications of the latter. He is eligible to become a member of the Congress and it is hoped that he will do so. The membership fee is $5, and this entitles one to receive the introductory volume of the Congress containing the proceedings; a digest of the other volumes and a general index. It also entitles the member to one other volume of the transactions, to be chosen as he will. For moderate sums he can buy additional volumes, the whole set costing delivered, $30 or less. On Jan. 12 the total membership was 2,350, of which only 290 were recorded as mining engineers. Full details regarding the Congress have been sent to every member of the Institute, and the failure of the members to take a more active interest in the matter is believed to be due to some misunderstanding of the situation.

One of the best present-day yardsticks of the material welfare of a nation is its consumption of minerals, The United States, with only 7 percent of the world population, consumes 45 percent of the world wealth, pays the highest real wages, has the shortest working hours, and numbers the largest percentages of home owners among its population, and at the same time its per-capita consumption of minerals is far greater than that of any other nation. In 1937, British India, with roughly twice the population of the United States, used less than 2 percent as much lead, 4 percent as muck zinc, and 13 percent as much copper; even in Europe, which has three times our population and where war preparations have greatly expanded the normal needs of peaceful industries, the aggregate consumption of metals and industrial minerals other than lignite is less than the total for the United States alone. The march of civilization passed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age before the dawn of history. It may be questioned whether man or monkey first threw stones at an enemy, but only man could have fashioned rough stones into weapons. Eoliths rudely shaped by apelike men are believed by archaeologists to have antedated by hundreds of thousands of years the existence of our own human ancestors. The primitive people that followed the retreating Ice Cap northward in early quaternary period - at least a million years ago - were fairly adept in the shaping of flints and even used a little copper. The Bronze Age, so-called, superseded the Stone Age when, around 8,000 B. C., the news spread that chunk s of natural copper could be pounded into better weapons or cutting implements than ever could be made by chipping stones. The Bronze Age gave place to the Iron Age about 1,000 B, C., and though students of modern history may speak of the Coal Age, the Petroleum Age, and the Automobile Age, and so on, these ages have all been crowded into a brief century and a half. The truth is that we still are in the Iron Age, unless perhaps we choose to call it the Age of Many Metals.

Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC's lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today's fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. He suggested that if the auto industry had advanced at the same rate as the electronics industry, we could buy a Rolls Royce for $2.75 and it would run

The bulk of Australia's uranium resour- ces was delineated in the last 18 years when a total of $563 million (1984 dollar values) was spent on uranium exploration. Australia's share of the low-cost Reasonably Assured Re- sources in the World Outside the Centrally Planned Economies Area (WOCA) increased from 1.5% in 1967 to 29% by the end of 1984 and its share of the low-cost Estimated Additional Resources (Category I) then stood at 25%. As of December 1984, Australia's uranium resour- ces were estimated by the BMR to be: Cost range US$80/kg U (US$30/lb U301) Reasonably Assured Resources 463 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 251 000 t U Cost range US$80-130/kg U (US$30-50/lb U308) Reasonably Assured Resources 63 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 126 000 t U The increases in Australia's resources was sustained by a group of large and rela- tively high-grade deposits which were disco- vered during the period 1969 to 1975. Austra- lia's share of the low-cost resources was also enhanced by a contraction of WOCA's low-cost resource base due to escalation of production costs for smaller low-grade deposits. Most of Australia's uranium resources are contained in the Proterozoic unconformity- type deposits of the Alligator Rivers uranium field and the stratabound deposit at Olympic Dam on the Stuart Shelf. Most of the remain- der of Australia's uranium resources is con- tained in calcrete-type deposits. Less than 10% of Australia's uranium resources are in sandstone-type deposits. Total Australian production to the end of 1984 amounted to 26 241 t U, representing 3.4% of WOCA's cumulative production. Aus- tralia's share of WOCA's annual production has steadily increased from 1.3% in 1977 to 11.2% in 1984 (4390 t U). The increases in Austra- lian production took place in the face of reductions of production in WOCA countries, principally the US, from a record level of 43 988 t U in 1980 to about 39 000 t U in 1984. New low-cost production centres, mainly in Australia and Canada, have partly compen- sated the decline in US production. Computers are a valuable tool to the aggregate industry and should not be overlooked. The selection of proper mechanical components is necessary. Merely the addition of a computer to operate a mechanical system will not guarantee that the system will work. Material delivery by rail or truck for stock-piling and intra-plant material transfer can be accurately supervised by automation with simplified controls for the layman to use. There are mechanical problems that occur in material blending and load-out systems when such a system is automated. Such things as material flow, bridging, stockpiling methods, overloading of equipment and safety must be considered. How these problems can be overcome by proper selection of compatible mechanical and computer equipment will be discussed. Also, there are many individual material circuits in a plant that can be computerized at a nominal cost. This type of computer installation will not necessarily result in increased production, but it will produce greater efficiency in manpower. These small computers, binary counters, memory circuits and other devices and their application to the aggregate industry will also be presented. A careful evaluation of the mechanical and computer inter-relationship by someone understanding both "Rocks and Electronics" is essential to proper handling of material by computers. Computers for the mining industry may be either digital or analog computers. Unless the computer is to control some type of chemical process, such as a cement plant, the, analog computer is not required and the digital computer' will be quite adequate and less expensive.

This study investigates the mode of occurrence of uranium in a copper concentrate from the Prominent Hill mine. Mineralogical and liberation studies of a high grade Cu concentrate (monthly composite) containing uranium (U) were undertaken using QEM-Scan in combination with QXRD and ICP-MS. The study aimed at determining in what form U was recovered, and by which mechanisms. The deportment of U was studied in 3 size fractions; +20µm, -20+8µm and -8µm. QEM-Scan analysis showed that uranium was present as U(Cu)-silicates, U-silicates, UPbOx/FeOx or traces of UThOx and UTiOx, with the U-silicates present across the size fractions. The association of uranium bearing minerals with copper sulphides varied across the size ranges. Interestingly, most of the U (46% by weight) was distributed in the finest fraction (-8µm), in which the deportment of Cu was low (6%). Over 40% of the U mineralisation in the -8µm was liberated. In terms of the floatation response, while recovery of the uranium minerals as a result of their association with copper sulphides (as composite particles) was evident, recovery of UPbOx locked in hydrophilic haematite in the +20µm size fraction suggests, that other mechanisms (e.g. Inadvertent activation by Pb from radioactive U decay) are possible. Furthermore, the high amount of fine liberated U bearing particles in the concentrate points at entrainment as another major mechanism for uranium recovery, and therefore, a target for process optimisation.
