The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a series of laboratory tests in a full-scale model to determine the respirable quartz dust capture efficiency of an irrigated-filter collection system while testing different filter densities, different filter materials, preconditioning water sprays, and wetting additives in the spray water. Impactor samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the filter unit to determine overall dust collection efficiency. The impactor filters containing the 0.7-to 4.7-J.l-m size fractions were analyzed for quartz content, and these data were used to calculate quartz dust collection efficiency. The results of this testing indicated that (1) increased ftIter density improved quartz dust collection, but also resulted in a significant increase in pressure drop across the filter, (2) an alternate synthetic filter material improved dust collection without increasing pressure drop, (3) preconditioning sprays mounted in the system ductwork can have a beneficial effect on dust collection, and (4) additives to the spray water did not significantly increase dust collection.

O presente trabalho foi realizado com a finalidade de estudar o efeito dos elementos titânio (teor de 0,05%) e de níquel (teor de 0,03%) na liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,24-0,28] %Fe-0,7%Si para fins de transmissão e distribuição de energia elétrica. Dessa forma, foi adotada uma sequência operacional a fim de caracterizar as estruturas apresentadas pelas ligas. Os processos de solidificação foram realizados via coquilha de aço (forma de “U”). Depois de solidificadas as ligas, os lingotes passaram pelos processos mecânicos de usinagem e laminação para obtenção de corpos de prova com quatro distintos diâmetros (2,7; 3,0; 3,8; 4,0) mm a fim de aproximar estes das bitolas utilizadas em indústrias de cabos elétricos. Todas as ligas foram caracterizadas macroestruturalmente analisando as estruturas brutas de fusão, eletromecanicamente por meio do ensaio de tração [?] e condutividade elétrica [%IACS]. Posteriormente, para a melhor compreensão dos resultados foram avaliados os valores de alongamento [?%] indicando que o diâmetro 3,00mm é a modificação com 0,05%Ti foram os de melhor resultados apresentados.

Engineered Scavenger Compounds (ESCs), developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, are a novel class of compounds that can selectively recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (Li2Ti3O7 or L'20-3T'02) is being used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from Aluminum-Lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that lithium titanate undergoes a phase change from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of Li in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of Li from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering Li from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. Both the orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti3O7 have similar scavenging capacities for Li. This paper proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

The mineral industry of Afghanistan improved substantially in 1976 as asbestos production was begun and feasibility studies were made of possible copper and iron and steel industries. The remarkable event of the year was the introduction of Afghanistan's 7-year economic and social development plan which covered the years 2976-82. The 7-year plan established ambitious goals for a gross national product (GNP) annual growth rate of 6.3% during its duration. To achieve this target, large increases in expenditures for economic development were programed in virtually every sector of the economy. Foreign assistance, in particular, was expected to finance a large share of new development projects. The major components of the plan were the development of transportation (highways and railroads), oil and gas exploration, construction of a copper smelter to exploit the copper deposits near Kabul, and development of an iron and steel industry to exploit the rich iron ore deposits in the central part of the country. Exports during the plan period were to continue to be principally agriculture products and natural gas to the U.S.S.R.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels — basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP during 2004 increased by 4.4 percent. The nominal GDP was about $11.7 trillion. Housing starts were up by slightly more than 4 percent for the year. And the nation’s unemployment rate decreased to5.5 percent in 2004 from 6 percent in 2003. Interest rates continued to be low (prime rate was 5.25 percent at the end of 2004) but have risen gradually, following rising inflation.

INCREASED production and utilization of minerals fuels and power accompanied the overall expansion in U.S. economic activity during 1963, which saw continued advances toward higher production, employment, and purchasing power. During 1963, record levels of wages, profits, and consumption were attained, while costs and prices maintained the stability exhibited throughout most of the recovery period. Expanding industrial production, the average index of which went from 118.3 in 1962 to 124.3 in 1963, narrowed the gap of unused manufacturing capacity to an estimated 5 percent. Gross national product (GNP), another major indicator of economic activity, reached a record level of $583.9 million (current dollars) during the year, this being $27.7 billion, or 4.9 percent above 1962. These achievements were somewhat marred by unemployment, which remained at 5.5 percent of the labor force in 1963, and the continued deficit in the U.S. balance of payments. Against this general background, total national consumption of energy resources for the year was equivalent to 49,816 trillion British thermal units (Btu), an increase of 4.2 percent over 1962. This represented a somewhat lower rate of growth than for GNP during the year.

"The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. THIS REPORT gives results of an investi¬gation of the carbonizing properties of coals from Pittsburgh bed, Jamison No. 9 mine, Marion County, W. Va., and from Upper Freeport bed, Bull Run No. 1 mine, Preston County, W. Va. The study included Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate the plastic, expanding, and agglutinating properties of coal. A blend of each coal was carbonized in the 500-pound slot oven. The carbonization sample of Pittsburgh coal contained 2.7 percent moisture, 35.8 percent volatile matter, 54.4 percent fixed carbon, 7.1 percent ash, and 0.9 percent sulfur. It contained 60.9 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and had a heating value of 14,780 B. t. u. per pound on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. It therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous and was blended with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. Upper Freeport coal contained 2.8 percent moisture, 27.7 percent volatile matter, 60.9 percent fixed carbon, 8.6 percent ash, and 1.0 percent sulfur, as carbonized. It contained 69.5 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and therefore ranks as medium-volatile bituminous. It was blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh coal from Allegheny County Pa.

A three-year project focusing on the depth profiling of respirable coal mine dust particles using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis resulted in the development of statistically classified particle-behavior models. The models depict the changing silicon fraction for 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-keV accelerating voltages, thereby giving a clear indication of the nature of various types of particles. This paper will focus on the results for respirable quartz particles that occur in underground coal mines across the U.S. The relationship between the amount of surface-available quartz and coal seam rank is well established for Pennsylvania

Innovative hard rock narrow-vein, longwall, and stope leach mining systems concepts are described and evaluated economically. The principal tool proposed for use in these systems for both mine development and production is the U.S. Bureau of Mines radial-axial splitter. The mining systems concepts are prefeasibility level costed and projected to be cost competitive for steeply dipping veins, 0.6-1.2 m wide, for horizontal tabular ores 2 m -5 m thick, and for leachable ores with greater than a 1.7:1 stripping ratio. In all of the systems the orebody, less swell, is retained underground for use as backfill.

The Cigar Lake project will develop the world’s second largest high-grade uranium deposit. The Cigar Lake Phase 1 orebody contains approximately 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7% U3O8. The mine, to be operated by Cameco Corporation, will use a unique water jet boring mining method to cut previously frozen ore. A distinctive ore handling design is required to handle the highgrade ore slurry exiting the mining machines. The ore will be crushed and ground underground, with the ore slurry then pumped to surface. Loaded into purpose-designed containers on tractor-trailer units, the ore slurry will be trucked to Cogema Resources Incorporated’s McClean Lake mill. McClean Lake will leach all of the ore. Forty-three percent of the resulting uranium solution will remain at McClean Lake for processing into yellowcake. The other 57% of the uranium solution will be shipped to Cameco’s Rabbit Lake mill for processing into yellowcake there. Detailed design for the Cigar Lake project is now underway. Barring regulatory or market delays, production could start up as soon as early 2006.

The Appalachian Mountains divide Pennsylvania into two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite. The western region of the the state, where the majority of bituminous mines are located, is characterized by mountains and gently rolling hills. Bituminous coal seams underlie about 12,000 square miles in 28 counties. The anthracite coal region, located in the northeast, covers approximately 3,300 square miles. This area contains more than 20 different coal beds that vary in thickness from a few inches to 50 or 60 feet. The anthracite region is characterized by steeply pitching seams that require highly specialized mining techniques and present unique challenges for solving problems such as the mine subsidence associated with abandoned underground anthracite mines. For more than a century, coal has played a major role in the economic and industrial development of Pennsylvania, particularly the steel industry. Estimated bituminous reserves total 23 billion tons, or 5.3 percent of U.S. reserves, and anthracite reserves total 7.1 billion tons, or 97 percent of U.S. anthracite reserves. Pennsylvania received conditional approval of its regulatory program July 31, 1982. Pennsylvania's Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved on the same date.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a human factors analysis of hazards associated with roofholting activities in underground coal mines. Emphasis was placed on hazards related to the movement of the drill-head boom or mast of a roof bolting machine. The objective was to identify hazards and recommend solutions. The data-collection effort consisted of analysis of U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration accident data; visits to underground mines and interviews with experienced roof bolting machine operators; discussions with roof bolting machine manufacturers; interviews with workers injured while performing roof bolting tasks; and reviews of research on roof bolting safety. A set of recommendations to increase the safety of roof bolting operations was developed. In particular, the following list of recommendations was presented in ranking order: (1) use an interlock device to cut off power to controls when an operator is out of position, (2) place fixed barriers at pinch points, (3) provide appropriate control guarding, (4) reduce fast-feed speed, (5) use automatic cutoff switches at pinch points, (6) redesign control bank to conform to accepted ergonomic principles, and (7) use resin insertion tools and resin cartridge retainers.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine (CMM) is first among all equipment, accounting for 35% of noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a "JOY Designed for Noise Reduction" (JOY DNR; patent pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of CMM operators. Underground testing shows a 45% to 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when comparing the JOY DNR tail section results to those for a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide CMM operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA permissible exposure limit (MSHA-PEL). The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed test procedures and criteria for evaluating explosive reactivity of explosive contaminated solid waste substances generated by U.S. Army Ammunition Plants. These substances are produced as explosive-contaminated sludge from waste water treatment plants, residues from the burning of munitions and explosives on open ground, and residues from deactivation furnaces. The characterization of explosive reactivity is a prerequisite for disposal of such waste materials, which may be contaminated with primary explosives, propellants, or pyrotechnic materials. The Bureau has proposed two tests for this purpose. These tests were developed to evaluate the explosive reactivity as defined in Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 261.23(a)(6) and (7). These are Bureau of Mines Gap and Bureau of Mines Internal Ignition tests, which determine the sensitivity to shock and thermal stimuli, respectively. This paper also includes gap and internal ignition reference data for typical blasting agents, high explosives, propellants, and marginally reactive substances. These reference data were used to establish test criteria. The Bureau has evaluated over 400 samples of contaminated soil, sludge, and burning residues using these two test methods.

"The design, development, and verification of the Lovat 7.6metre diameter full-face tunnel-boring machine is reviewed. Programmatic and technical challenges are outlined with a review of the specifications and the design to meet these requirements. Subsystem designs are presented for the waste material removal, ventilation, cutter head, structural support, advance technique, water removal, and interfaces with the Donkin-Morien Mine. The techniques used to verify that the design meets the requirements is by testing in the Lovat factory and in the field. Certification of the machine for use in a methane environment is discussed.IntroductionStudies have concluded that the average annual worldwide tunnel construction is 500 kilometres at an estimated average co st of $3,400 U.S . per linear metre. The total market value of the tunnelling industry is estimated as approximately $1.7 billion U.S. per annum. Of this, the current market for tunnelboring machine excavation is approximately $270 million U.S. per annum worldwide with a further potential of $250 million if more contractors are convinced that Tunnel-Boring Machines (TBM) are more suitable than conventional techniques. The worldwide civil tunnelling market has the potential to double each year in the next 5 to 15 years. Growth has been identified in the energy and mineral resources sectors of the economies of many nations and a significant volume of machine tunnelling studies and trials are presently underway for the extraction of coal, uranium , heavy oil or oil sand fuels, metallic and non-metallic industrial minerals and base metal or rare earth ores. Further tunnel projects for regional transportation, waterpower, irrigation , high density urban transportation, storm water sewers and water supply purposes are continually being implemented with new concepts like military security facilities and underground storage schemes being considered.Lo vat Tunnel Equipment of Rexdale, Ontario, the only Canadian manufacturer of TBMs was incorporated in 1973 to manufacture so ft ground tunnel-boring machines to satisfy this growing market demand. Lovat has produced an average of 5 machines per annum during the period 1972 - 1982 and has established an international reputation for competitive costs, quality of construction, after-sales service, and reliability. As of June 1982 Lovat TBM's have been used to tunnel over 240 km in projects throughout the world."

among uranium alloy systems are the U-Zr, U-Ti,and U-Mo binary systems, in that an intermediate phase, of limited solubility range, exists in each system. These intermediate phase alloys offer a promising field of investigation, both as binary alloys and as ternary alloy combinations. While a limited amount of work has been done on the binary alloys, none has been done on ternary combinations of these alloys. As a possible prelude to more intensive investigation of these systems, a study of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems was undertaken. The solid-state portions of the binary constitutional diagrams for the U-Ti,1 Zr-Ti,2 and U-Zr3 systems are shown in Fig. 1. The solid to liquid transformations are not shown, as these transformations were not studied in the ternary system. The phase designations employed are based upon those shown in the uranium constitutional diagrams. The crystal structures of the various phases are given in Table I. Experimental Materials and Methods The ternary section presented is based upon the results of thermal, metallographic, and X-ray analyses of a series of alloys ranging in composition between the phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems (U-74 atomic pct Zr to U-35 atomic pct Ti). After preparation of the alloys, thermal data were obtained. On the basis of these data, specimens were heat treated and examined metallographically. Specimens were then selected from those heat treated for X-ray determination of the phases present in what were considered critical phase regions. Alloy and Specimen Preparation—Alloys for this investigation were prepared from selected as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium and titanium. For nominal compositions, see Table 11. Charges were arc melted from five to seven times under a helium atmosphere, finally being cast into wire-bar form for fabrication. A zirconium getter button was used to clean the furnace atmosphere prior to melting. The alloys were homogenized 20 hr at 900 °C and furnace cooled. A portion of each bar was then removed for thermal analysis; the remainder was saved for fabrication. Alloys 8 through 14 were placed in steel tubes along with zirconium getter chips and, after flushing with argon, the tubes were welded shut and rolled at 1500 °F to a 50 pct reduction in diam. The remaining alloys were annealed 24 hr at ll00°F to insure transformation of the ? phase to the 8-U2Ti phase and were then hot rolled from a salt bath. Attempts to roll alloys 6 and 7 at 1100 °F were unsuccessful. Following this, attempts were made to roll pieces of alloys 1 through 5, which had cracked rather severely during casting, at 1200 °F, but these efforts were also unsuccessful. These alloys were, therefore, further treated in their cast and homogenized condition. All alloys were pickled to remove oxide formed during rolling. Thermal data were obtained on these alloys by conventional differential thermal analysis at a heating rate of 30C per min, and by a high-speed heating method at rates of approximately 10°C per sec. The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.
