The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water, and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper, and a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5 pct P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88 pct of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9 pct copper at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate 4 times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80 pct of the phosphate in a l6.9-pct P2O5 concentrate.

A traveler driving across desolate central Nevada to the Round Mountain property can easily identify with turn- of-the-century prospectors seeking a fortune, or at least an existence, from the high desert. But now a shadow passing overhead is as likely a sophisticated fighter aircraft from Stillwater Naval Air Station as a circling bird, and the famous trails west show only as historical markers along the highway. Even the approximately 400- km (250-mile) trip southeast from Reno or northwest from Las Vegas takes hours now, not days. And the camps of Round Mountain’s early prospectors have been replaced by one of the world’s largest gold heap-leaching operations. While Round Mountain’s uniqueness begins with its scale, it doesn’t end there. Consider the mine’s low cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold, made possible by a new dedicated (not reusable) leach pad. Also, the operation’s degree of automation means that ore dropped in the south crusher system is not manually handled until it is stripped from the pads. There is the bonus of a geothermal field that is tapped to heat the leach solutions in the winter. And, of course, there was that “unexpected” hitch expected in all mining operations. For Round Mountain, it meant buying a gravity plant to process the gold nuggets discovered last summer in a fault gouge.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes approximately 142 billion kWh/a of energy. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the industry’s annual energy consumption could be reduced by 49%. This constitutes nearly $3.7 billion of potential savings on coal production costs at 5.3¢/kWh of energy. Additionally, with climate change regulation on the horizon, any benefits from energy savings in the near future are compounded by associated reductions in CO2 emissions. Research indicates that operating conditions significantly affect energy efficiency. Modeling and simulation have been shown to be a cheap and reliable means of evaluating the effects of process interactions and operating conditions. The goal of this work was to apply stochastic process simulation to model the energy efficiency of a typical truck-and-shovel mining system and use the model to evaluate production strategies to improve energy efficiency. The research team conducted energy audits of truck-and-shovel overburden removal and used the results to develop regression models describing truck and shovel fuel consumption. The team then built a stochastic simulation model of the truck-and-shovel overburden removal operation and used it to assess a variety of improvement measures by simulation experimentation. Valid fuel consumption models for shovel loading and truck haulage have been formulated, based on the energy audit results. Valid stochastic process models of truck-and-shovel operations have been formulated to study energy efficiency. The following strategies, in decreasing order of impact, provide the most energy savings for truck-and-shovel overburden removal at the mine: (1) shorten haul roads, (2) increase shovel capacity and (3) increase shovel utilization through optimal truck matching. Additional data will be required to adequately describe operator effects on energy efficiency.

Utah has produced about one billion troy oz. (31.7M tonnes) of silver, more than any U.S. state except Idaho. Several very high grade ore systems, now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These Utah mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham porphyry mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcano sedimentary rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement meta quartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d’Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to porphyritic plutonic rocks.

l, INTRODUCTION Uranium mine and mill workers are exposed to external gamma and beta radiation fields from radioactive ore. In the past the average uranium content of ores mined in the United States and Canada ranged from about 0.1% to 1.0% U308 with pockets of much higher grade ore. Holiday (1973) reported that radiation surveys in the U.S. uranium mines found mean gamma "radiation rates ranged from 0.20 to 0.70 mrem/h. Such radiation rates cause relatively insignificant exposures." Others also concluded that the external gamma radiation fields associated with uranium mining did not result in significant worker exposures (Federal Radiation Council, 1967; Simpson, S.D. [et al], 1959) Gamma exposure levels in most modern-day Canadian uranium mines are reported to be low with average annual exposures estimated to be less than 1 rem/a (Frost, S.E. [et al], 1981). However, two developments are taking place which affect the potential significance of external radiation fields in the uranium mining environment. The first development stems from the most recent system of dose limitation developed by the ICRP which is intended to limit the workers' overall risk from exposure to ionizing radiation through the adoption of a sum rule (ICRP 26, 1977) which combines external and internal radiation exposures. In the case of exposure to radon daughters the sum rule will have the effect of reducing the annual exposure limit below the recommended limit by an amount that depends on external radiation and other sources of internal exposure such as the inhalation of ore dust (ICRP 1980). The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB) is reviewing this subject and is expected to produce its recommendations shortly. Irrespective of the form of the sum rule eventually adopted by the AECB, it is clear that the net effect of the sum rule will be a collective reduction of the individual dose limits for individual exposure pathways. The second factor is the increasing development of high grade uranium deposits in Northern Saskatchewan. Some of these ore bodies have an average ore grade of 1% to 5% U308 or greater. Since the potential external radiation fields increase in proportion to the ore grade, it is apparent that increased effort in radiation protection planning is required in order to develop safe yet workable methods for mining and milling such ores. This paper is intended to provide information which can be of assistance in the formulation and development of a mining and milling plan. The principal focus of the paper is source identification and the design of radiation protection measures to limit external gamma radiation exposure. The exposure of workers to external beta radiation fields is also discussed. The paper is organized as follows: - Section 2 deals with source characterization. - Section 3 discusses the effects of finite source size and distance (i.e. geometry effects). - Section 4 presents selected data that are useful in evaluating shielding requirements. - Section 5 discusses the potential beta radiation fields. - Section 6 discusses practical data requirements for worker exposure scenarios. - Section 7 presents a variety of work exposure calculations. - Section 8 is a summary of this paper. 2. SOURCE CHARACTERIZATION This section develops the basic formulae for estimating the fluxes and doses from external gamma radiation. The calculation of the radiation flux due to a distributed source (i.e. a linear, area or volume source) as a function of distance assumes that any distributed source can be treated as a summation of point sources. [ ] Uranium ore contains radionuclides from both the decay chains of U-238 and U-235. In this paper the radioactive daughters are assumed to be in secular equilibrium with the uranium parent. (If natural thorium were present in the ore in significant quantities, the gamma rays originating from Th-232 would have to be added to the gamma rays from the uranium series). In all, there are over 50 separate gamma rays (as well as alpha and beta particles) emitted from the U-238 and U-235 radioactive decay series (USHEW 1970). The total

For thousands of years gold has been not only a commodity, valued for its comparative scarceness, immutability and homogeneity but also a medium of exchange which has no nationality. Approximately 90% of the gold produced is still accessible in the world, although some of it in museums, galleries, jewellery and dental work is not immediately available for circulation. The majority is held as bars by central banks for their reserves; the balance circulates as coinage or bullion held for investment. The value is further enhanced by the political aspect that gold cannot be debased as paper currency can and, therefore, it always becomes an investment refuge. It has always been possible to buy and sell gold at a price which is readily established by reference to bullion's weight and purity; and it is this fact which makes a loan denominated in gold, rather than one in currency, a viable alternative means of finance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some general aspects of what is considered to be one of the more effective and presently popular methods of financing the development of a gold mine - the gold loan. This is not intended to discuss all the minute details which must be uniquely designed to fit each individual situation, but rather to provide general guidelines. You will all be aware of the traditional sequence whereby companies primarily finance exploration work by the raising of equity through the sale of shares to the public or by that unique Canadian form.

When limestone (Ca03) is calcined in rotary kilns to produce quicklime (CaO), it is not unusual for 10% to 20% of the stone to abrade and emerge from the kiln as quicklime fines (-6.3 mm or -0.25 in.). While there are various industrial processes that can use fines, handling and shipping is tricky and dangerous. Due to the highly caustic nature of quicklime, airborne dust easily bums eyes and skin. On the other hand, money has already been invested in mining (or buying) the raw material and in the equipment and energy needed for calcining. Discarding the fines will not only waste that investment, but add even more cost in transportation and possibly dumping charges. So the question becomes, how can fines best be turned into a revenue-generating asset? Some plants convert leftover quick-lime fines into calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2, also known as hydrated or water-slaked lime - for sale into agricultural applications. For farm uses, hydrated lime fines are preferred over quicklime because they are easier to handle. And they are favored over raw limestone fines for their higher concentration of calcium and greater solubil¬ity. From the producer's viewpoint, quicklime fines are ideal for this use because they go through hydration faster than the larger chunks of quicklime. Those larger chunks, or "pebble lime," are more readily salable and more easily handled, for such uses as steel, copper, aluminum and magnesium production, water waste treatment, chemical, paper, glassmaking and flue gas desulfurization in coal- fired boilers.

Although not generally recognized, Arizona has rock salt deposits unique in the United States. This uniqueness stems from a combination of two factors: (1) relatively youthful geologic age and (2) nonmarine origin. Although Arizona shares one deposit with Nevada (Figure 1, No. I) there are three others within the State (Nos. 2, 4, 5) that are believed to be both late Cenozoic in age (less than 15 million years) and nonmarine in origin. The only other recognized nonmarine salt deposits in the U.S. are much older, being in the early Cenozoic (Eocene) Green River Formation of Colorado and Wyoming. According to Johnson and Gonzales (1), the remaining rock salt deposits in the United States are marine and either Paleozoic or Mesozoic in age. Of the seven localities shown in Figure 1, six in the Basin and Range geologic province are believed to represent nomarine late Cenozoic phenomena and one (No. 7) in the Colorado Plateau geologic province is Paleozoic (Permian) in age and marine in origin. The following comments are intended to update the general geologic highlights of these deposits and to summarize the nature of their present utilization.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD, under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments, including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Current plans include construction of large rooms (up to 55 m in width) at depths of 1.48 km (4,850 ft) and 2.25 km (7,400 ft) below the surface. Preparation of the preliminary design required the development of a geotechnical characterization program, including preliminary drilling and coring, core logging, drill hole mapping with a televiewer, drift mapping of the geology and rock structure, in situ stress measurements, and laboratory testing of the mechanical properties of the rocks and discontinuities. Overall rock quality is very good to excellent. Site investigations included geotechnical assessments for the construction of caverns and laboratory modules. The results are favorable and reaffirm selection of the Homestake site for establishment of a Deep Underground Engineering and Science Laboratory.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

Resin bolting has enjoyed wide acceptance for coal mine roof support. Beginning in 1973, the first year of significant resin bolting in coal mines, we estimate that 2.5MM resin bolts were installed. This grew to 7MM resin bolts in 1974 and 13MM in 1975. Resin bolts are currently being used in over 300 coal mines throughout the major coal producing areas of the U.S. and barring major work stoppage we expect more than 17MM will be installed in 1976. Although not a cure-all, the number of unintentional roof falls occurring in many mines has been dramatically reduced as a result of converting to this "new" method of support. 1 The improved anchorage strength of resin bolts provides better roof support. (Slide #1) This anchorage strength provides a mechanism to resist changing roof stresses along the entire length of the fully grouted resin bolt, thereby assuring stabilization of rock strata over long periods of time. The ability to resist roof displacement is borne out by readings obtained from strain gauged bolts. These findings can be summarized as follows.2

"When Dr. Joseph A. Holmes was named the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, the challenge in front of the mining industry was urgent and profound. Just three years before the Bureau was formed, the United States’ coal industry saw a spike in fatalities, as 3,242 miners lost their lives, including 918 miners killed in 18 major disasters. Holmes, who is often called the Founding Father of Mine Safety, was charged with researching and finding new and safer methods to conduct mining activities as well as more efficient ways to conduct mine rescue to educate miners.The U.S. Bureau of Mines was dissolved in 1996, but the mission of the Holmes Mine Rescue Association remains intact, although the challenges have changed greatly.During the 102 years between its formation and the 2018 Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association & Holmes Mine Rescue Association Annual Meeting and Training Seminar in Denver, CO June 5-7, the mining industry has evolved to become one the safest industries in the United States, with an injury rate on par with school teachers and better than retail workers. The work of Holmes and the Bureau of Mines plotted a course for others to follow, and the fatality rate has plummeted to historic lows. However, those who work in the mining safety and health sector remain diligent to their cause and are slow to celebrate too much the accomplishments of the past century, focusing instead on the work that lies ahead.“The nature of mining accidents has changed and it is very difficult to make changes when you get down to the asymptotic part of the equation,” David Zatezalo, assistant secretary of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) told Mining Engineering. He was the featured speaker at the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association annual meeting’s banquet dinner and presented a thorough overview of the mission of MSHA and his goals as its top man.Nominated by President Donald Trump, Zatezalo was sworn in as the ninth assistant secretary for MSHA on Nov. 30, 2017 and brings with him a lifetime of experience in mining. During his presentation, he displayed the chart (Fig. 1) showing the dramatic improvement in safety that the industry has achieved during the past century, but he noted that, as the industry gets closer to its end goal of zero fatalities, it has become increasingly more difficult to cross the finish line."

Regulatory pressure to mitigate the cement industry’s environmental impact has intensified recently, spurring innovation in low-carbon cement technologies. In the United States, cement production, consumption, and carbon emissions are accelerating. Despite this trend, the adoption of environmentally friendly dry clinker production technology with combined preheater-precalciner systems has surged from 53.3% in 2002 to 88.5% in 2019. Concurrently, reliance on wet technologies, known for their higher environmental impact, has dropped from 16.5% to 0.6% within the same period. This paper presents the results of our comprehensive study, utilizing over 100 years of industry data, to analyze these technological shifts and their environmental implications.

Many recent mine developments in North America are located in remote northern regions with extreme winter temperatures in the range of -20oF to -60°F. In addition, many locations are subject to very heavy snowfall. This paper discusses some of the key considerations in the planning and design of mine plant buildings, particularly concentrators, located in these regions. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS The subject is considered under three main headings: I. Building Out line and Structural Frame 2. Wall and Roof Materials 3. Foundations The plan outline of a mine plant building will naturally be governed by the scope and layout of the process equipment it contains. The selection of roof profile, on the other hand, will generally depend upon a number of factors extraneous to the process e.g. snow conditions. When these factors are considered for concentrators in cold locations, a flat or stepped roof will usually be more economical and suitable than a sloping roof. The materials normally used for the structural framework of concentrators are the same as used for other industrial buildings, namely steel, concrete and wood. On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). On July 13, 1967 the San Bernardino County Planning Commission approved publicly a request by American Smelting and Refining Company for a zone variance to conduct a silver mining and milling operation in the Calico district, southern California, Coincidentally, on July 14 the U.S. Treasury halted its sales of silver, and the U.S. free market price quoted rose immediately from $1.30 to $1.77 per ounce. In its request to the commission Asarco stated that about 13,500 to 15,000 tons of rock would be moved daily by surface mining, including 7,000 tons of ore. The ore would be crushed to minus three-quarters inches and the silver recovered "by a chemical process." The grade of the ore was not given, but the company said that it might also recover barite as a byproduct, The operation would employ 150-160 people. Additional activity in the district includes exploration programs by Superior Oil Company and Calico Silver Mines, Ltd. History and production: In retrospect, as the price of silver began to rise in 1961 from 91 cents an ounce, and as Asarco began its exploration program in late 1964, a new era for an old bonanza silver district would seem to have begun. The Calico district has been mined for silver only on a very, very small scale since 1882 to 1896, when an estimated $12 to $20 million (perhaps 15 to 20 million troy ounces) of that metal was produced from the 50-odd mines of the district and vicinity. These mines include the Silver King, Oriental, Waterloo, Garfield, Odessa and Waterman (which is about 8 miles west of the district). Much smaller-valued amounts of barite, gold, lead, and copper also have been produced from the ore deposits of the district; and from 1884 to 1907 the region yielded about $9 million worth of borate minerals.

To address the U.S. Department of Energy’s critical minerals strategies regarding rare earth elements (REE) in the U.S.A. This study evaluated apatite-rich mine tailing from the historic Pea Ridge Iron Mine (PR) for possible enrichment of REE by the froth flotation process. Comprehensive characterization studies were performed on the tailing samples to quantify the REE content, identify the REEbearing minerals and their liberation behavior. The aforementioned characterization studies were: x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and TESCAN’s Integrated Mineral Analysis (TIMA). The ICP-MS analysis showed that the concentrations of heavy-REE and light-REE were 8000 ppm and 3000 ppm, respectively. TIMA showed that monazite was the major REE-bearing mineral. Additionally, it was shown that monazite and other REE-bearing minerals were strongly locked within larger apatite grains. Findings from the characterization studies suggested that REE could be enriched using phosphate minerals’ direct froth flotation process. Flotation feasibility tests were performed using selected organic and inorganic iron oxides’ depressants, including polyacrylamide (PAM), in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (HyPAM), chitosan, sodium silicates, and corn starch. Results showed that the depressant’s efficiency at pH 9 was in the following order: HyPAM > chitosan > PAM > sodium metasilicate > corn starch. Zeta potential studies on the selected depressants indicated that chitosan had the highest adsorption on magnetite’s surface at pH 7. Therefore, additional batch flotation experiments using chitosan as an iron oxides depressant were conducted as a function of chitosan dosage. Results indicated that the highest P2O5 recovery of 55% and grade of 28 wt.% were obtained at 150g/t of chitosan. However, the concentrate’s highest total REE enrichment of 1.07% was achieved at a 200 g/t dosage of chitosan. The low enrichment of REE highlighted the complex mineralogy of the PR tailings and the need to implement additional beneficiation strategies before and after the froth flotation process.

7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent.
