Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques that will help to identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and can provide the kind of information, needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety, to mitigate roof fall injuries.

Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management's familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client's business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client's shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant's report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant's method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. Thus, consulting services may range from evaluating an existing system and upgrading to a larger piece of equipment, to selecting a new first-for-the-organization computer. First, Define and Summarize Needs Regardless of circumstances, the most valuable document required before equipment selection is the information system plan (I/S plan). It helps insure that the company's information needs are met in a cost-effective manner. An I/S plan is usually a comporient of the mining company's overall business goals. Since an I/S plan is a formal vehicle for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to satisfy information requirements needed to achieve goals and objectives, most initial systems services are likely to center around creating such a document or updating an existing document. Nuclear power currently produces about 20% of the electricity in the US, with 104 nuclear power plants located in 31 states. The commercial US nuclear industry contributes over $4 billion annually to US workers in salaries and wages. 25,000 new jobs need to be filled in the next 5 years. There are over 30 new power plants under consideration by US utilities. The operating reactors use uranium oxide fuel enriched to about 4% U235 and fission is the process used to generate heat to form steam to drive the turbine generators. Nuclear energy is an important element in the US generation portfolio and represents the largest producer of nearly emission-free electricity. Most, if not all, of the operating plants will secure an extended 20 years of operation or more. The last plant constructed was ordered in 1978. New smaller, modular reactors are under design to provide less expensive, expandable generation options.

"Frac sand is industrial silica sand much like glass, foundry, filtration and blast sand. The sand must meet certain specifications set forth by the industry that consumes the product. The production and consumption of frac sand has experienced record growth in the last 10 years because of new oil and gas drilling, new horizontal well drilling, multi-stage fracturing and the stimulation of older wells that have little or no production. Frac sand is needed to “prop open” the fractures in the rock reservoirs to allow oil and gas to flow out more freely.According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the estimated production of frac sand in 2015 was 71 percent of the total production of industrial silica sand or 67.4 Mt (74.3 million st). This is a decrease of about 12 percent from 2014. However, the silica sand industry and other industry sources estimate only 50 Mt (55 million st) of frac sand were produced in 2015. In recent years both the USGS and industry studies have been very close in estimating the production of frac sand but with the recent downturn in frac sand production, perhaps, reporting to the USGS was not as accurate. These discrepancies may be that the USGS statistics are based on voluntary reporting by the industry and some companies report their approximate production, others may not. It is always difficult to obtain accurate production figures of any industrial mineral or construction aggregate operation as most companies tend to keep those figures somewhat confidential. It is certainly accurate to report that the production of frac sand had decreased since the last quarter of 2014 and through 2015. The oversupply of oil and natural gas has led to this decline in frac sand usage. Oversupply has idled drilling rigs and well completion activities. World Oil Magazine reports that 2015 was the worst year for rigs in a quarter century. The only wells being completed are those that have contract agreements to do so, others have been capped. Very few new wells are being drilled. Since about 98 percent of well completion is sand and water, the sand supply has caught up with the demand. There are some bright spots in the “oil patch” as the Permian Basin in Texas and the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma have kept pace somewhat with drilling and completion. It has been reported that the frac sand producers in the Brady-Voca, TX area are producing to nearly capacity. The northern frac sand producers like those in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota are feeling the downturn because of the cost of shipping sand to these moderately active basins and plays. The “rule of thumb” is that freight is 2/3 and sand is 1/3 the cost."

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.

The prevention of AMD in situ is more attractive compared to subsequent downgradient treatment alternatives that do not involve source control. AMD source control can be achieved by shifting the microbial activity in the sulfidic rock from pyrite oxidation to anaerobic heterotrophic activity. This is achieved by adding biodegradable organic carbon amendments to the sulfidic rock. This technique was applied in an abandoned mine pool with a pH of 3-3.5. Following treatment, near-neutral pH and decreased effluent heavy metal concentrations were achieved. In situ bioremediation by enhancement of bacterial iron and sulfate reduction is a promising technology for AMD prevention.

When SME’s 2006 Arizona Conference convened in December at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, AZ, there was considerable excitement among the 387 attendees. There was a noticeable buzz surrounding the progress of Phelps Dodge’s Safford copper mine in southern Arizona, one of the first new major copper mines to be permitted in more than 30 years in the United States. There were also plenty of good feelings about the mining industry in general. Commodity prices remained high and with no signs of a slowdown in the immediate future. Things were good in Arizona. But there were also cautionary tones at the conference and the Mining Foundation of the Southwest banquet that preceded it.

In an ever increasing ?carbon? society; management and growth will be measured by one?s carbon footprint (or output). Industries, especially mining, are under an ever increasing scrutiny of carbon, water and environmental mandates. These mandates are measured by the emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. The fundamental building-block for any business, strategic or management decision must be based on an understanding of one?s ?footprint?. The scrutiny is most stringent for the commodities producers, power producers & fuel suppliers in the energy market. An overview of currently acceptable standards, application of those standards and nuances experienced in collecting the data necessary to analyze and complete a company?s carbon footprint will be presented. A lack of regulation, the fear and expectation of new and ever constraining rules, regulation and a change in the federal administration is a recipe for uncertainty in the marketplace.

Mine land reclamation is a comparatively new science-Although some mining companies point with pride to reclamation efforts of 20 to 30 years ago these were the exception rather than the rule. In the last ten years the skyrocket of environmental awareness has been awesome to behold. Future shock gripped mine operators everywhere as they struggled to cope with rapidly changing and escalating demands. The initial result was that two divergent points of view became dominant. Environmentalists said, "Put it back the way it was," and the miners responded, "Let's grow some weeds and hide it." These views are not surprising as they represent rather obvious alternative responses, albeit at opposite ends of the decision spectrum. The former case has prevailed more often than the latter, as most state and federal legislation -- both proposed and passed -- has required drastic alteration of the post-mining landscape so that evidence of prior mining is largely obliterated. An exception to this has been in porphyry copper country where the infrequent abandonment of mines has given emphasis to the second philosophy -establishing vegetative cover on mine waste materials. Now, it should come as no revelation to most mining people that both of these approaches to mine reclamation suffer from serious drawbacks when applied to open pit copper mines. First, whereas waste dumps and tailings dams can be vegetated with some aesthetic benefit, the massive presence of copper mining operations remains very prominent. It is difficult to conceal an open pit copper mine. Second, returning open pit copper mines lands to their original topography and productivity is simply not a reasonable alternative.

Energy Metals Corp. (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin. The JAB property is one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope uranium project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report was completed for the JAB property. This report estimated total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 1.6 kt (3,555,022 lbs) U3O8 contained in 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st) at an average grade of 0.073 percent U3O8 at a 0.25 grade times thickness (GT) cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42° 14’ North and Longitude 108° 00’ West (Fig. 1). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming state mineral leases com-prising approximately 850 hm2 (2,100 acres).

Energy West Mining Company (EWMC) has implemented a geologic program for improving stability and support requirements along deep two-entry longwall gateroads at its Deer Creek Mine operations located near Huntington, Utah. Together with geotechnical monitoring and concurrent review of mine seismicity in cooperation with MTI staff, it has become possible to improve longwall layout designs for two seam extraction of the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon seams. The geologic program consists of surface and in-mine exploration drilling, surface and in-mine geologic mapping, rock mechanics testing and detailed measurements of changes in depositional and structural conditions during development of every longwall gateroad. The geotechnical program consists of underground measurements at seven locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon coal seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on seismicity and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program for verifying the insitu coal strength and load transfer mechanisms for improving two-seam designs and support systems. Geologic mapping results are also used to predict local stability of headgate and tailgate entries, combining mine roof mapping, stratigraphic profiles of the coal and roof, and depth-of-cover information and dual-seam mine overlays, for use by operations personnel in planning roof and rib support for the retreating longwall sections.

INTRODUCTION The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina is the fourth largest airport in the southeast region of the United States. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is currently underway with planning, designing and constructing are placement Passenger Terminal as part of the Major Capital Improvements Program at Raleigh Durham International Airport. The Terminal C Expansion and Renovation Project will replace the existing Terminal C structure with a new processor building and concourse. The project is separated into several contracts. The early stage contracts are constructing a west side storm water management facility, relocating taxiways, installing new drainage systems, installing new aircraft apron pavement, Demolition, the Central Energy Plant and Early Foundations. The later projects are the Terminal Building, Passenger Boarding Bridges, Information Technology Systems and Integration, Furniture, Furnishings & Equipment and Specialty Millwork. The Terminal Building will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 constructs the north half of the new terminal. Airline operations will move to the new terminal at the completion of this phase. Phase 2 completes construction of the south processor building. The full build out of the project, subject to funding availability, will replace the remainder of the south concourse. The Program’s primary focus is to replace the existing passenger Terminal C with a new terminal that will provide more passenger gates and larger passenger screening, ticketing and baggage handling facilities. The planning for the New Terminal C Program began in 2002 with construction starting in March, 2003. The continuing growth of passenger airline travel in the Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area requires RDU to expand its facilities to keep up with the present and future growth within the Region. In October of 2002, the RDU Airport Authority selected Parsons Transportation Group as the Program Manager/Construction Manager to help assist in the development of the Terminal C expansion program. RDU Airport Authority selected the Seattle Washington Office of URS Corporation as the Engineer of Record for the West Side Storm Water Management Facilities. The Westside Storm Water Management Facilities Project became one of the early critical path activities of the overall RDUAA Terminal C Expansion Program. The Briar Creek Reservoir had been constructed to accommodate storm water runoff to the west of the Airport. The existing 1.5 m culvert that drained runoff from the airport terminal (area) to the reservoir was insufficient in supporting the additional flows

The presentation named 'Dewatering of fines by Rotary Vacuum Disc Filters' has an opening why the filtration process is important to the Iron Ore Industry. It goes on to describe the various types of dewatering machines which have been used in this industry in the last 30-40 years, and where the vacuum disc filters now dominates. It presents also the most important design changes which have been made during this period to enhance performance. Further are discussed the principles of filtration and the factors and parameters which influence performance and operating costs. As a closing is presented today's ideas and thoughts about what can be foreseen of design modifications and improvements in disc filter design in the coming ten years.

In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.

"Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanodynamic and chronopotentiometric techniques were used to characterize the effects of DXG-F7®, a commercial smoothing agent, on copper electrodeposition onto 316L stainless steel from a synthetic electrolyte containing 40 g/L copper (Cu2+), 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 20 mg/L chloride (Cl-) at 40oC. The findings were compared against results using HydroStar® 4208, a modified polysaccharide. The nucleation overpotential and plating potential observed in cyclic voltammetry and galvanodynamic testing showed that neither DXG-F7 nor HydroStar significantly polarized acidic copper electrodeposition. Subtle differences between the additives were found during EIS testing and modeling, but more research will be needed to fully understand these differences. Surface-roughness measurements of two-hour deposits indicate that DXG-F7 and HydroStar produced smoother deposits as their concentrations in the electrolyte increased. No difference in the surface roughness of deposits was detected between the additives. Based on the experimental evidence resulting from the laboratory testing, no significant difference was found between DXG-F7 and HydroStar at 20 mg/L Cl- concentration, with the exception that DXG-F7 dissolves more easily in water than HydroStar. Introduction Cathode deposits obtained from acidified copper sulfate electrolyte(s) without organic additives are often soft, coarsely crystalline and nodular (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Therefore, small amounts of organic additives are added to the electrolyte to produce level and dense cathodes during copper electrowinning. The action of organic additives is thought to be due to their adsorption on the surfaces of the newly formed copper grains. Hence, any copper grain that grows excessively fast adsorbs a layer of organic additive, which inhibits growth. The result is a smoother and harder deposit of suitable purity (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). In part I of our four-part series on the examining of copper electrowinning smoothing agents, a review of previously published work on organic additives used during copper electrowinning was presented (Moats, Luyima and Cui, 2016). In the review, it was noted that many tankhouses had switched from guar to other saccharide-based products such as HydroStar and DXG-F7."

INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. Tar sand deposits in Utah represent more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, 96% of the known U.S. reserves. The technological development of a hot water processing strategy for the Canadian tar sands and the commercial Production of synthetic crude oil from this natural resource suggest that similar success may be possible for the utilization of Utah tar sands to provide our country with a new domestic source of synthetic crude oil. In this regard an active research program to develop a hot water processing strategy for Utah tar sands has been sustained at the University of Utah for the past five years. The hot water process for Utah tar sands differs significantly from that used for Canadian, tar sands due to the inherent differences in the respective bitumen viscosities and the nature of the bitumen-sand association. These differences have led to the identification of certain design criteria necessary to achieve satisfactory phase disengagement during digestion. (8,9) Subsequent flotation of the digested tar sand is a subject of current attention and is considered in this contribution for the Asphalt Ridge tar sand deposit. Although contact angle measurements of pure Asphalt Ridge bitumen indicate moderate hydrophobicity, air bubble attachment to the bitumen concentrate taken from a 37 liter flotation cell is not possible. This surprising result suggests that the flotation separation is dependent on air bubble entrapment rather than on attachment due to surface hydrophobicity. The occlusion of air bubbles in the bitumen is apparent from visual examination of the concentrate, especially at lower temperatures. It seems that a bitumen bubble agglomerate forms in the impeller region of the flotation cell, the effective density of which is such to allow the agglomerate to float to the surface. A factorial design of the major operating variables in the flotation separation indicated that the quality of separation was significantly dependent on the flotation temperature and to a lesser extent on the degree of agitation. For a flotation temperature of 77C recovery of 96.7 percent was realized at a grade of 61.0 percent bitumen. The improved separation at higher flotation temperatures was found to be due to the decrease in bitumen viscosity resulting in more effective rejection of coarse sand from the concentrate.

"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

This paper presents a summary of basic requirements for the design, installation and operation of booster fans in coal mines, especially in deep and/or extensive mines. It includes a brief description of the major steps that should be followed to ensure that these units are used in coal mines safely and efficiently. The guidelines were prepared based on the standards and regulations adopted by two prominent coal mining countries, the best practices developed by the mining industry, and the applicable standards used in the United States for the fail-safe operation of main fans.
