The exploiting of geothermal steam is a new endeavor in this country and is for that matter a very new science in the world. With the majority of steam wells in the world having been drilled during the last twelve years relatively little experience and knowledge has been gained that can guide us as compared to the techniques the oil and gas producers have developed for their use. We few technical personnel associated with the field find it a continuous challenge to understand and explain what effects or causes the various unusual phenomenon experienced. We have had unending discussions attempting to formulate pet theories which we can use as guides. We know, so the geologists tell us, that the source of the heat is from the hot magmatic core of the earth. Theory has it that the magma is cooling off and that hot gases are given off as this magma cools and shrinks. In volcanic' areas along fault lines where the magma reaches closer to the surface than in other areas, there is a higher concentration of gas evolution; consequently, geyser or geothermal areas are developed. As these hot gases rise toward the surface they encounter various minerals, including overlying bodies of water. It is into these underground lakes that our wells are penetrating. As the heat enters these lakes it spreads out by conduction, convection and water migration. We can strike this hot water over quite large areas in many of the geothermal fields. At present there is one anomaly to this in the United States as there is in Italy where our wells do not penetrate a hot water lake. This is at The Big Geysers in California. Here superheated steam is produced with a heat content, so high that it could not have been boiled off of a fresh water pool. This puzzled us until last year when a well was completed into a large body of brine in the Imperial Valley. This brine exists at close to 500°F and at a hydrostatic pressure sufficient to preclude any boiling. It is now believed by some of us that a similar pool of brine must exist below The Big Geysers area, from which the steam is emanating. If there is such a brine pool, it offers a plausible explanation of the high-heat content, for brine boils at a higher temperature than fresh water. I am now beginning to think that a similar brine pool may exist under all the geothermal basins for if it is under two of them, it is highly probable that it is under the others. The partial understanding of what we are drilling toward, and formulating a theory to explain its behavior helps guide us in our steam well drilling.

"The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. "It has been nearly eight years since rare-earth elements (REE) became the subject of frontpage headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomized in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al., 2016c; Mancheri, 2015).The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries such as the United States that was, and still is, totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand, and the Chinese sovereignty of the REEmarket on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016).The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly in late 2017 and were in six-year lows, before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REEmarket entrants (Barakos et al., 2016b; Rollat et al., 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China have impelled REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation process of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

Bingham Canyon lies in the heart of the Oquirrh Mountains, 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. In it is located the world's largest open-pit copper mine, owned and operated by the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation. From the beginning of open pit mining operations in 1906 until 1963, the pit haulage, or materials transportation, was primarily by rail. In 1963, phase-in of a truck haulage system in the upper two-thirds of the pit was begun. The details of that conversion, its associated problems and the resulting pit operation have been covered in an earlier paper.1 The purpose of this paper is to discuss various factors for consideration in transportation system selection, and to discuss some of the alternatives considered prior to making the change from rail haulage to truck haulage for a portion of Bingham Canyon.

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

Working in gassy ground conditions is an everyday occurrence for the U.S. coal mining industry. As tunneling operators begin to venture into projects that expose them to the additional hazard of potentially explosive atmospheres, lessons learned by the mining industry over years of experience should be transferred into this industry. This paper will present practices developed by the U.S. coal mining industry for dealing with the problem of excavating material in potentially explosive atmospheres. Procedures will be discussed that can be used to detect and quantify gas prior to mining that have application to the construction industry. Degasification or drainage practices, including predrainage from vertical and horizontal boreholes, will be discussed. Also, ventilation practices commonly used in the mining industry will be presented.

An entirely new level of magnetic filtration technology was put into full commercial production by the kaolin industry of Georgia, U.S.A. during 1973-1974. At present, four kaolin producers in Georgia are operating large magnetic filters each capable of processing over 1000 gallons of kaolin slurry per minute or over 65 tons of kaolin per hour on a dry basis. A fifth large filter will go on stream in August, 1975. Four of these units are 84" machines manufactured by the Pacific Electric Motor Company of Oakland, California. When operated at the maximum 1000 g, p. m. rate, these five large magnetic filters have a combined capacity approximating the entire waterwashed coating and filler kaolin produced in the U.S.

In a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy, laboratory column-flotation tests were conducted to evaluate fluorosurfactants as selective fine coal flotation collectors. A Middle Kittaning seam coal responded to flotation with both anionic and nonionic fluorosurfactants. These fluorosurfactants were no more selective than MIBC alone. However, for increasing coal yields, nonionic fluorosurfactant systems did not increase total sulfur and ash contents as sharply as MIBC systems. Flotation selectivity also improved slightly when a combined anionic fluorosurfactant-MIBC system was used in acidic pulps (pH < 3.6). While the fluorosurfactants examined will not likely have direct application in current coal flotation practice, other fluorosurfactant systems could eventually prove beneficial for floating fine coals.

In 1917, U.S. Coal and Coke Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel, opened Mine 31 and built the community of Lynch, Kentucky. For the time this was truly a major engineering accomplishment. It was documented in Howard N. Eavenson’s 1939 AIME paper, “Coal Through the Ages.” In 1996, Arch Coal donated the Portal 31 property to Harlan County for public use. In 2003 the Southeast Education Foundation, Inc. and the Kentucky Coal Museum plan to open the Portal 31 Exhibition Mine to the public to tell the story of Kentucky coalmining through the decades. This presentation will summarize the history of the project, efforts to bring it to reality, the engineering problems, and the challenges of providing a safe environment for visitors.

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for the industrial and defense sectors. In 2018, the U.S. Department of the Interior presented the final list of critical minerals that are vital to the U.S. economy and defense [1], which included REEs among other mineral commodities. REEs are not rare, despite their name, but economically viable deposits of REEs can be found only in certain geographical areas, and the political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. Mining operations may be placed in great operational and financial risk if operations are planned in such areas. Erroneous decisions by decision makers may lead to a chain of events that can completely shut down a mining project.

It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry&apos;s problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

Concentrating plants, in common with other types of industrial plants, cannot operate without lectric power. The elctric distribution system and utilization equipment; therefore, must be carefully considered in all phases of plant design. Two important aspects of proper distribution and usage of electric power are the selection of voltage levels and the methods of system grounding. These are not necessarily the most important design considerations, but are perhaps more controversial than other major points, Modern plants demand increasing amounts of power which, since electric power is the product of voltage and current means higher voltages or currents. Higher voltages require more insulation, higher currents more conductor. The equipment designer?s problem is to obtain in his transformer, cable, switchgear, controller, motor, etc a balance of insulation and conductor to obtain a satisfactory design at lowest cost. To provide the most economical system, both in initial and operating costs requires the system designer to select the proper voltage level. Adequate voltage also permits expansion to meet future requirements, and results in better operation of utilization equipment, Relatively little advancement has been made in recent years in improving conductors; however, great progress has been made in improving insulation. Thus modern plants, in general, now find it more economical to use higher voltages than they did previously. For example plants which only a few years ago would have used 2400 volts as a system voltage often find nowdays that 4160 volts is their proper choice. If the plant requires 10,000 kva br more, then an even higher voltage, such as 13,800 volts, will prove economical. However, for the average concentration plant, with less than 10,000 kva demand, the choice of distribution voltages is between 2400 and 4160 volts, and 480 volts will be used for the low voltage utilization system.

The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been successfully applied to two very different tunneling projects in the U.S.. In the case of Pittsburgh&apos;s Mt. Lebanon Tunnels, two original design alternatives were prepared. The NATM alternative incorporating a reinforced shotcrete final lining was successfully bid and constructed. At Washington Metro&apos;s (WMATA) Section B-10 Glenmont Route, Wheaton Station and tunnels, a NATM value engineering redesign was prepared for the low bidder. The design incorporating a waterproofing system based on a PVC membrane between the initial and final linings was accepted by WMATA. In both cases, European experience and standards were meshed with U.S. standard practice. Examples of NATM flexibility as an original design and as a value engineering proposal are presented.

Since 1998, environmental extremists have waged war with the central Appalachian coal industry in West Virginia and Kentucky. In particular, they have filed three lawsuits challenging the legality of excess spoil ‘valley fills’ under CWA, NEPA and SMCRA: 1) Bragg v. INLAND STEEL COAL COMPANY&apos;S experience with a gypsum cement, with and without fiber glass filler, indicates that the concept of utilizing standard rock dust equipment to dry handle and apply gypsum cement as a mine sealant is feasible, simple and economical. Prior to 1975, Inland had casually experimented with a few sealants and had discussed the advantages and shortcomings of other sealants with various users. Hower in mid-1975, Inland foresaw the need to seriously acquire a practical sealant system. There were nearly a dozen sealant materials on the market at that time: silicate-based materials, Portland cements, vermiculite cements, gypsum cements, and magnesium-oxysulfate cements, each with their own fillers and additives. The applicating equipment ranged from simple to complex: wet mix or slurry machines operating on either a batch or continuous basis, high viscosity pumps, and pneumatic, dry conveying machines with water nozzles. Compounding the selection process, two or more products could often be used with the same machine, or a given material could be successfully applied with more than one type of machine.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for nearly 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In recent years, the number of some annual ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, the twin disasters at Crandall Canyon in 2007, in which nine miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990s, these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents since 2005. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery, where there has been just one fatal incident since 2005. On the other hand, more than 300 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting and inside control roof bolters could reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety.

The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary&apos; change in the history of underground ore mining.
