Tunneling requirements are presenting designers with greater challenges. The design and construction of the 2000-ft long unidirectional twin highway tunnels for the approach to one of two bridges of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges (LSIORB) Project is no exception. Excavation under low cover, beneath an historic site, with each tunnel of 70-feet wide and 50-feet high dimensions will set precedents for US highway tunnel excavation size. To investigate ground conditions to supplement final design of the highway tunnels, an exploratory tunnel excavated through karstic limestone and shale will be located within the confines of the proposed final alignment. With the LSIORB Project, Jefferson County, Kentucky and Clark County, Indiana will have improved cross-river mobility between them. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) are developing the LSIORB Project jointly, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Section 4, one of six sections, as shown in Figure 1 is the East End Kentucky Approach and Connections to I-265. Key elements of Section 4 are the twin three-lane highway tunnels under the historic Drumanard Estate. The property is located on the north side of US Highway 42 (US 42) at the intersection with the Gene Snyder Freeway (also KY841) as shown in Figure 2. One aspect of the project consists of the excavation of an Exploratory Tunnel along the southbound alignment tunnel. At the time of preparation of this paper, KYTC has not awarded the Exploratory Tunnel Contract. This paper will focus on the planned geotechnical investigation program that will occur during excavation of the exploratory tunnel and how the design of the twin highway tunnels will incorporate the findings to achieve an innovative and efficient configuration.

Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

The Pinto Valley Concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulphide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and moly concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/moly circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the moly concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the moly circuit were completed, the final moly concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns was chosen. The column design and construction were done utilizing in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing moly concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high moly tenors and low copper and iron content. In this paper, the operating parameters, mass balance, design, installation, commissioning and operation of the new flotation columns will be discussed.

Because of the high cost of obtaining coal washability samples, it has been difficult in the past to obtain washability variograms. As a result, it could not be determined if the geostatistical prediction tool known as kriging can be applied to predict in situ coal washability characteristics. This paper presents the obtained variogram models for the Upper Freeport coal seam in western Pennsylvania. Variogram model parameters are presented for a total of 27 models. They are for four different variables: float- weight, ash, sulfur, and Btu, at seven different specific gravities: 1.275, 1.300, 1.325, 1.400, 1.600, 1.800, and 1.80,Sink. Based on the obtained variogram results, it can be con¬cluded that all attributes of coal washability show definite spatial correlation structures, and, consequently, geostatistics can be used to predict the in situ coal washability characteristics.

It is very seldom that a completely new project is initiated. Most projects consist of a new and different combination of proven techniques or a combination of proven and new techniques. The theme of my discussion today falls in the second category. Proven methods of water transportation and proven methods of bulk material handling were combined with some new techniques which resulted in a new market for the coal industry and a cheaper fuel supply for the power industry. In this respect I refer to the water transportation of coal from the West Kentucky coal fields to coal burning power plants on the west coast of Florida. Peabody Coal Company, Florida Power Company, Gulf Coast Transit, and Mid-South Towing combined their individual requirements and "know how' to make this project possible. I feel the results speak for themselves since it proves that coal can be mined in the West Kentucky coal fields, transported some 1,200 miles by river barge and some 450 miles by ocean going barges, be delivered to power plants on the west coast of Florida and still meet the competitive prices of gas and residual oil. The unique parts of this project concerns the storage and trans loading facilities for coal from river equipment to ocean equipment near New Orleans; the return haul of phosphate and it's trans loading from ocean to river equipment at the same facility and the use of large ocean going barges. In detail it works as follows: Coal is mined in West Kentucky and loaded into 1,500 ton river barges on the Green River. It is then transported some 100 miles to the mouth of the Green on the Ohio River, then 200 miles down the Ohio to it's convergence with the Mississippi, and then 900 miles down the Mississippi to the trans loading facility some 40 miles South of New Orleans. There it is transferred from the 1,500 ton river barges to 18,000 ton ocean going barges and hauled some 450 miles across the Gulf of Mexico to the Gannon Station of Tampa Electric at Tampa entailing a total haul of approximately 1,650 miles.

It seems probable that more and more minerals will be used in plastics as time goes on. This must occur because the minerals will; aid in processability, enhance the engineering properties, reduce the cost, and above all conserve large amounts of petroleum based chemicals. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of using the minerals and the ability of the domestic minerals industry to support this possibly very large undertaking. In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. The mechanism shown here (Fig. 1) may not be all that it appears to be. To many of you it may look like a hopper car, a thing of mobility, in which you would ship coal, ores, limestone, or other bulk materials. It is approximately 50 feet long, 12 feet high, and can be placed on tracks which are on approximate 14 foot centers. But far too often in the past, and all too often today, this mechanism has been made to serve as an immobile storage box, with its primary role -- the transportation of products, seemingly incidental to the storage function. Our engineering training teaches us to conserve resources, despite some of the popular and misconceived philosophies being advanced these days. Those of you who work for companies with traffic departments know that they are always striving to reduce the price which is paid to move your mine products. Today, let's consider and analyze the ways in which the cost of transporting your mine products might be reduced, based on particular reference to coal. Bear in mind that in this context, cost and price are not necessarily synonymous. Until a few years ago, most coal and other bulk materials handled by railroads moved under standard tariff rules. These rules, which still exist today, provided transportation vehicles (railroad cars) for extended periods at no added price to the shipper or receiver. Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.

The practice of dust abatement or control is not new to any operation of United States Steel Corporation. This report will review those activities, past and present, within the five operating districts of United States Steel-Coal Operations with specific reference to mechanical and continuous mining, and including both the health and safety aspects of the problem. Obviously, the first principle of dust control is to inhibit its formation If this is not practical, steps may be taken to prevent its becoming airborne. Airborne dust control can be realized by either collecting it at the point of generation, diluting it with large volumes of air to reduce concentration, settling it by various means, or with reference to ignition hazard only, render it incombustible by neutralization with an inert material. These basic principles have been verified by the work of many, including the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of Interior, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board of Great Britain. Their application to every day mining problems is best illustrated by the following examples.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. Even though several improvements in the molybdenum circuit were completed, the final molybdenum concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns were chosen. The column design and construction were done using in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing molybdenum concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high molybdenum tenors and low copper and iron content. The Pinto Valley operations, are comprised of the Pinto Valley concentrator, the Pinto Valley dump leaching and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. The concentrator operated from 1972 to 1998 when mining and milling operations were curtailed for economic reasons. The SX/EW plant continued operations for copper cathode production. After a cessation of mining operations of almost 10 years, Pinto Valley operations began a restart project in January 2007, to bring the mine and the concentrator back into production. Copper concentrate production started in October 2007 after refurbishing and upgrading the facilities with a new DCS system and filter plant. The daily targets of the concentrator were to treat 56.7 kt (62,500 st) of ore, produce 762 t (840 st) of copper concentrate containing 27.5 percent copper at recoveries of 86 percent and produce 2.2 t (2.5 st) of molybdenum concentrate containing more than 80 percent MoS2.

Dr. Ft: L. Handy of Iowa State University's Engineering Experiment Station very handily reduced the relatively complex cement making process to ultimate simplicity: "Take two cups of crushed limestone; add one-half cup of clay or pulverized shale (plus perhaps some sandstone or iron ore; depending); mix thoroughly and grind up fine. Bake in white-hot oven at about 2,600 F. Cool. Add a tablespoon of gypsum: and, again, grind very fine. If you can do this for about a penny a pound, you can almost compete.' Before Dr. Handy's time, is the early days of the U. S. Cement Industry, from 1817 when the Erie Canal was started to 1895 when the first rotary kiln was built, this was the recipe, more or less. Dr. Handy's raw materials were deposited in a natural "cement rock" found in the Hudson, New York and Lehigh, Pennsylvania valleys. At first the natural rock was pulverized (not ground fine) and interlayed with wood for "baking" at about 1,800° F in a batch process vertical shaft kiln or beehive oven; then the calcined pozzalonic (lime and silica) product was cooled and ground fine for shipment in wooden barrels. Later, in 1871, true portland cement was made. The same natural rock was ground fine to make briquettes; interlaced with wood or coal in the "Beehives"; and baked at a clinkering temperature of about 2,6000 F to produce clinker (calcium silicates) which was ground fine for sale. In those days, the crude cements dropped in price from over 1 cent to 1/2 cent per pound. In 1895 the rotary kiln introduced-continuous instead of batch processing. The countercurrent process allowed the same raw materials (now finely ground to about 80% minus 200 mesh like face powder) to be fed at one end of the rotary kiln. Heat from a coal burner was introduced with combustion air at the other end to produce the requisite clinkering temperature. The clinker product was discharged for atmospheric cooling, mixed with gypsum, and again ground fine as face powder. The cement was sold primarily in barrels, later in jute or cloth bags, then paper bags, and now primarily in bulk truck and barge carriers. The price dropped to a 1/4 cent per pound by 1910, but with recent inflation it now sells for 2 cents per pound.

One often sees in the papers, in these days of ecological consciousness, estimates of the quantity of land that has been "devasted," "ruined," or "destroyed," by surface or strip mining, especially for coal. One feels sure that coal miners must have been the first to discover the art of excavation and that the public didn't know of its existance until five or 10 years ago! Estimates of the acreage vary widely with most of them sounding somewhat unreal. One estimate of 175,000 acres in Alabama appeared in one newspaper article and the implication was that all of this was mining for coal. The question was raised anew last summer when the author began working on a land use estimate utilizing aerial photographs, a preliminary project to the Alabama Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) contract presently being fulfilled. One land use category was barren or waste land and aside from some sand beaches in the two coastal counties in Alabama, recently strip mined land constituted most of that category. It quickly became apparent that old stripping was very hard to detect so that estimates from aerial photographs are not accurate. With regard to relatively new stripping, a thin veneer of reflective dirt washed over the countryside may result in a considerable overestimate of the excavated area. Actually, there is a way to estimate the area excavated by strip mining using published Bureau of Mines figures. At least three sets of data are needed: (1) Coal production figures, (2) average thickness of coalbeds mined, and (3) an accurate recovery figure.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

A 4.5-mile-long, 96-inch-diameter outfall pipeline was constructed between North Texas Municipal Water District’s proposed Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility and the Stiff Creek Discharge Structure. Two TBM-mined tunnel segments were excavated for the outfall pipeline through rock and mixed-face conditions within the Austin Chalk Formation. The TBM mining performance was tracked in detail and evaluated during mining. This paper discusses the TBM configuration, TBM utilization, advance rates, and challenges of both tunnel segments.

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.
