This contribution describes rock mechanics features of the Davis Cavern at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, U.S.A. The mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. In 2003 and again in 2008, the mine site was recommended for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in cooperation with the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory under the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). The original Davis Cavern was excavated about 9.1x16.8x9.7 m high (30x55x32 ft high) in 1965 (Mitchell 2009) at a depth of 1,478 m (4850 ft). The purpose of the cavern was to house apparatus for detecting solar neutrinos. The experiment ultimately proved successful and earned R. Davis a share of the 2002 Nobel Prize in physics. Recently, a new experiment (LUX=Large Underground Xenon detector for dark matter particles and WIMP's=weakly interacting massive particles) was proposed for the Davis Cavern that required an increase in height of 2.4 m (8 ft). For many years, the Homestake gold mine was the deepest operating mine in North America. Development extended to the 8000 Level (2,438 m). The mine closed in 2003. Pumps were shut off and the water level rose to the 4350 Level, about 150 m (500 ft) above the Davis Cavern. Some six years later after selection for DUSEL proposal development by the National Science Foundation (NSF), access to the 4850 Level and the Davis Cavern was regained. Pumping has lowered the water level to well below the cavern floor. Figure 1 shows the layout and location of the Davis Cavern (Cavity). Detector tank, supporting steel, and so forth were subsequently removed. The cavern was re-supported and new access was developed. By August, 2010, 13,000 ft3 had been removed during enlargement and renovation of the Davis Cavern. Figure 2 shows the detector tank under construction in 1965.

The definition of high sulfur coal varies from plant to plant and is subject to changes over time as the environmental regulations change. In plants constructed after September 1978 hardly any domestic coal can currently be burned without the use of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) because a 70 percent reduction in potential S02 emission is mandatory even when the potential emission is less than 0.6 lbs. S02/106 Btu heat input. On the other hand older power plants may in many cases be legally emitting up to 6 lbs. S02/106 Btu or more under some State Implementation Plans (SIP). The Clean Air Act requires, however, that in the long run all stationary sources of S02 pollution must abide by the ceiling of 1.2 lbs S02/10 Btu heat input.. Coals with a potential to exceed this limit must, therefore, be considered as high sulfur coals. Such a definition would be unrealistic because many SIP's aim at an emission level of 1.8 to 2.0 lbs. SO2/106 Btu for existing plants and a stricter limit does not appear to be enforceable in the next 5 to 10 years. As a result, coals with an emission potential of greater than 2.0 lbs of S02 per 10 Btu heat input are considered high sulfur coals for the purpose of this investigation. Based on this definition and the 1984 actual consumption of coals by U.S. electric utilities (table 1) only 7 out of the 24 coal producing states could be categorized as low sulfur states. The actual S02 pollution, however, depends on total tonnage of a type of coal as well as the sulfur content of the coal. Table 1 also indicates that only 6 states--Kentucky, Illinois, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana-account for nearly 77 percent of S02 pollution potential in the United States. These 6 states have therefore been chosen for this investigation.

"In 2018, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 3 percent from 2017 to $82.2 billion. The estimated value of metals produced domestically decreased by 4 percent, and the estimated value of indusrial minerals produced domestically increased by 7 percent (Table 1).Some idle U.S. metal mines and processing facilities restarted in 2018, including two primary aluminum smelters in Indiana and Missouri, a rare-earths mine in California and a zinc mine in New York. In contrast, four iron ore mines in Minnesota and a pelletizing plant in Indiana were shut down. Increased oil and natural gas drilling activity in 2018 led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling, including barite and industrial sand and gravel. Production of industrial minerals primarily used in infrastructure and residential construction — including, cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum — increased in 2018. Overall, mining activity trended upward for the second consecutive year because of increases in oil and gas extraction and industrial mineral mining (Table 2).Mineral industry performanceDiscussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as natural aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of natural aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities, thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1)."

In the recent past, there have been numerous projections of the capital requirements for additional mine and processing capacities required to meet projected non-Communist World demand for minerals during the next 15 years. A consensus judgment would place this currently at $14 billion per year, with the largest expenditures required for increases in aluminum and copper production. Until the early 1960's, internally-generated funds were used to finance nearly all of the large mining companies' capital requirements. Since that time, however, the enormous rise in capital costs per ton of capacity, accompanied by a relative stagnation in the financial condition of many of the major mining companies, have caused the industry to begin to rely on external sources for financing expansion, most notably, project financing from commercial banks and institutional lenders. Seven years ago, it was estimated that, in the five-year period 1972-1976,75% of the total capital requirements of $10 billion per year would come from internally-generated funds, with the balance to be provided by external sources. l There is little doubt that, in the coming decade, the percentage provided by external sources will increase. There should be little difficulty in attracting the necessary investment within the U.S., particularly in view of the expected continuation of companies in diverse industries seeking mineral investment opportunities. The more serious question lies in the availability of internal and external sources of funds for the expansion of mine and smelting capacity in the developing countries. Recently, R. F. Mikesell projected an average annual investment of $4.7 billion (in 1977 prices) over the 1977-1990 period would be required from foreign sources to expand metal producing capacity in developing countries. Mikesell concluded that external financing of mining projects in the developing world has averaged less than $1 billion per year over the past five years, thereby requiring more than a quadru1ling of this financing over the next decade.

The paper presents the evaluation method of the thermal power potential of the salt lakes developed in collapsed salt mines in Romania. It is well-known that the hydro-chemical stratification of these lakes favors warmer internal layers. The degree of heat varies during the year, but, taking into account the large number of genetic lakes of this type, it can be used as a local utilizable power source. The authors analyze the correlations between the physico-chemical parameters of the water and the degree of heat stored as a function of the morphological parameters of the lakes, as well as the technical parameters for capitalizing on this power.

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. [Table 1] affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak- type brines, produced mainly for lithium. MARKET ATTRIBUTES Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are: 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities. 8. Purchases are generally by contract of one year or longer term, with spot buying playing only a minor role. 9. Contract prices are usually fixed in short term commitments, but may vary according to assay, with premiums and penalties for content above or below the norm; however, general practice is for specifications to be fixed in the contract with minimums being set for the desired material and maximums for undesired elements. In longer term contracts, prices are often escalated on labor, fuel, and other vendor processing costs. 10. Suppliers of individual commodities to the chemical industry tend to be limited in number and are generally medium- to large-size producers that supply a few major consumers. 11. The bulk of the mineral volume is for basic chemical uses, sulfur suppliers to sulfuric acid producers and fluorspar for hydrofluoric acid producers being typical examples. These basic chemical products then are used for the production of other products. 12. Shortage of a supply of adequate quality leads consumers to seek substitutes. In the case of fluorspar, much work is being done on recovery of fluorine from phosphate rock. Success in the form of fluorosilicic acid and/or hydrofluoric acid production could, in time, affect the hydrofluoric acid chemical industry. 13. Markets tend to be characterized by cycles of shortage followed by oversupply, with attendant wide price fluctuations. 14. Baniers to trade can have an adverse effect on the necessary movement of industrial minerals used by the chemical industry in international trade. Antidumping laws, quotas, and tariffs can disrupt or dislocate normal markets. 15. Chemical industry consumers may back-integrate for security of supply or for favorable economics, sometimes by joint ownership and often with experienced mining partners.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is beginning to provide compliance assistance visits to various industries, including mining, for Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) compliance. The EPA inspectors may consist of a multi-media team deployed to review systems and procedures for EPCRA Sections 302, 304, 311, and 312. The Team’s focus may include emergency response plans, training programs, qualifications of personnel, and release notification protocols. This presentation takes a look at the EPCRA compliance challenges faced by Arizona copper mining and processing facilities.

In every business today costs come under almost microscopic scrutiny. It's hard to conceive that less than 30 years ago there was no such cost consciousness apparent in overall industry. Railroads, through their almost absolute monopoly on freight handling, were one of the industries where little thought was given to overall costs. True regulation kept rates in line, but railroads did very little in the area of supplying equipment intended to help the shipper minimize his costs and at the same time result in savings to the rail carrier. During this period, except for isolated cases, railroads placed standard cars for loading. Most railroad car fleets consisted of box cars, hopper cars, flat cars and low side gondola cars certain roads having unique movements developed special cars to accommodate the particular product, but seldom did these cars move in general interchange service. Most of you are aware that several large companies built railroads of their own as an integral part of raw materials handling from remote sources to production plants located near concentrations of usage. On these railroads special cars were built with little thought to inter-change service. Examples of such railroads are the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, the Union Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie and the Birmingham Southern.

A senior design project is required by all accredited mining engineering degree programs. Often referred to as the capstone of a student’s education, this project is expected to include all the important components of the preliminary economic assessment of a mineral prospect, including orebody modeling, grade and reserve estimation, selection of mining and processing methods, preliminary mine design, access and utilities, environmental compliance and reclamation, and financial analysis. Two of the authors (Campbell and Holdsworth) completed a senior project in 2021. They analyzed the Akie zinc deposit located in Canada. This paper summarizes the economic analysis portion of that project. The two primary objectives of this economic analysis were risk reduction and integration of economics and engineering. Addressing risk is important as risk is one of the primary concerns in mining investments. Risk reduction was the primary concern through the entirety of this economic analysis. Integration of financial analysis and engineering design was the first component of a risk reduction design. This allowed for financial and engineering design to be optimized in conjunction with one another. This produced benefits from both a financial and an engineering prospective. From a market, economic, and financial risk perspective, risk was reduced by forecasting multiple metal price scenarios, and then addressing the Akie project’s economic viability at each price point. Lastly, risk was address through consideration of nontraditional financing options. The project also sought to minimize financial and human capital risk, by proposing mutually beneficial cooperative social relationships and favorable work, schedules. Description of that work is not included in this paper.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. Bolting the mine roof is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. The main contribution to the high noise is the drilling of the roof bolt holes, especially in hard rock. A previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling the bolt holes is inversely proportional to the bite depth (i.e., penetration per drill revolution). Less specific energy at a reasonably high bite depth means less energy is wasted in the drilling process to produce heat, bit wear and noise. Therefore, control of drilling operation to achieve a higher bite depth can provide an opportunity to reduce drilling noise from its sources as a proactive noise control approach. In order to explore the feasibility and to develop the proactive technology for reducing drilling noise, drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings. The preliminary results show significant reduction in noise dose can be achieved by drilling in medium hard rock at a reasonably high bite depth. This paper presents the findings from the laboratory experimental studies conducted so far.

A mining operation begins with prospecting and exploration-stages with long periods of investment and high risk of failure. However, success in exploration ultimately determines survival of the mining industry. Prospecting and exploration may discover evidence of a mineral occurrence and outline its size and character, but ore deposits that support mining are "made" through the collective efforts of project geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, metallurgists, engineers, chemists, lawyers, and even politicians (Joralemon, 1975). Some deposits may go through multiple cycles of rejection and recommendation, discovery and development, decline and abandonment, rediscovery and development, etc., as economic, technological, or political conditions change or geologic understanding is improved. Peters (1987, p. 233) graphically illustrates the normal life cycle of a mine and the position of exploration in the cycle (Fig. 4.0.1). During the past fifty years, mineral exploration has evolved from comparing evidence of mineralization of prospects with that of known deposits to a more quantitative science employing many facets of geochemistry, geophysics, multispectral sensing from space, computer data storage, analysis, modeling, and most importantly, a better understanding of ore genesis. This modem approach to exploration began in the late 1940s and continues to develop. Exploration efforts peaked in the 1960s with emphasis upon the search for porphyry copper deposits, Mississippi Valley lead-zinc deposits, and volcanogenic massive sulfide copper-lead-zinc deposits. It peaked again in the middle and late 1980s with emphasis upon micron-size disseminated gold and epithermal and stratiform precious metal deposits.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide) are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines (about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in Arkansas and Michigan. Arkansas, with its six plants, was the leading U.S. state in bromine production. Bromine being the leading mineral commodity valuewise produced in the state. The Michigan bromine production was a byproduct of magnesium compounds production.

Results are presented that were gathered during field-scale testing of an innovative technology, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), designed to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). The project was performed under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy through an Interagency Agreement. The MWTP is implemented by MSE Technology Applications, Inc., located in Butte, Montana. A field-scale test is described in which the subsurface workings of an abandoned mine were used as an "in situ biological reactor."

Since the introduction of shield supports in 1975, safety and production in U.S. longwall faces have improved considerably. Many faces had a daily production of up to 8,000-10,000 tons and productivity reached 600 tons per man-shift. But a longwall face requires expensive equipment which slows down the growth rate of the percentage of longwall production. Among the equipment cost the shield support accounts for 50-60%, a very large proportion. Therefore, it will have a large impact on the growth of longwall mining in the U.S. to reduce the support cost (1).

The chemistry of the element uranium enables industry to employ either an acid or alkaline carbonate leach solution for most uranium ores. Either method my be used for conventional, in-situ, or heap leaching. Uranium recovery in the leaching process depends both on the solubility of the uranium minerals and, on the access of the leach reagent to them. The uranium leaching rate is proportional to the liberated mineral surface area and the chemical reactions involved in the dissolution step. The dissolution of U(VI) and the oxidation of u(IV) to U(VI) are the basic chemical reactions in the leaching process. The active surface area is a function of the effective porosity and the particle size of the ore (1). Ore pieces, with a high porosity and high permeability, may provide a large active surface area even in coarser fractions. This type of ore might be suitable for heap or in-situ leaching techniques. Nonporous and impervious ores are usually more amenable to conventional milling where the active mineral surface is exposed by grinding the ore down to the liberation size of the mineral.

Investigations of underground coal gasification (UCG) have been actively pursued by the U.S. Department of Energy since the early 1970s; the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) conducted its first field experiment in 1976. In conjunction with field and laboratory studies of the process of recovering energy in the form of combustible gases from the burning of coal deposits in situ, an extensive environmental program has been conducted at LLNL under the auspices of both the U.S Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program has focused on groundwater contamination and ground surface subsidence caused by UCG. The material presented in this paper is a summary of results from the environmental studies of UCG activities conducted by LLNL as described by Mead, et al. (1981) and supplemented by the author's experience with this program in 1980 and 1981. The following sections describe specific groundwater contamination and surf ace subsidence problems encountered during field experiments in northeastern Wyoming, and will discuss implications of preliminary findings from geohydrological investigations of a site in southwestern Washington. Finally, possible environmental control technologies that are most likely to be effective in mitigating environmental impacts are discussed.

Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) are required when using air from conveyor belt entries to ventilate working sections in U.S. underground coal mines. AMS technology has the potential to increase fire safety mine-wide, but research is needed to determine the detection and response times for fires of a variety of combustible materials. To evaluate the potential of an AMS for fire detection in other areas of a coal mine, a series of full-scale fire experiments were conducted to determine detection and response times from fires of different combustible materials that are found in U.S. underground coal mines, including high- and low-volatility coals, conveyor belts, brattice materials, different types of wood, diesel fuel, and a foam sealant. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) located in Pittsburgh, PA, using a commercially available AMS that is typical of current technology. The results showed that through proper selection of sensors and their locations, a mine-wide AMS can provide sufficient early fire warning times and improve the health and safety of miners.

We are proud that one of our predecessor companies originated the phrase "Safety First". That phrase remains today as the guiding principle that governs our total approach to safety and well being in U. S. Steel. U. S. Steel management is totally committed to this attitude and our objective is to have every employee as deeply conscious of his safety responsibilities. Safety is a state of mind but like most things it must have a physical side - both intertwined and inseparable. You might say each promotes the other; and this gives us confidence that with hard work, cooperation from all individuals, and proper application of knowledge and experience, our ultimate objective of frequency "0" will be attained. It is in this vein of thought we present a paper today which gives you briefly our progress, mainly in the physical, or mechanical, protection of miners at work in the Southern District mining operations of U. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.
