"The majority of tunnels for civil engineering applications are now being constructed using some form of mechanical excavation. Beginning in the 1960s with rock tunnel boring machines (TBM), the tunneling industry has introduced both earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry pressure balance (SPB) soil machines; mixed soil and rock machines and a variety of different mechanical devices for the construction of small diameter tunnels. Over time, these machines have become more powerful and more adaptable to a wider variety of ground conditions; so much so that tunnels are now being constructed in ground conditions and in the vicinity of third-party impacts that would have been considered beyond the state of the art just 10 years ago. Figure 1 is an example of a mixed ground crossover TBM used successfully at Mexico City’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II.All of the above is highly advantageous for the tunneling industry, but it has also placed a much higher level of risk on the performance characteristics of the tunneling machines, on the contractors operating those TBMs and on the manufacturers of those machines. Most of the risks for a tunneling project are associated with creating the space inside of which the finished facility will be constructed. In order to create that space, the tunnel contractor must make many decisions about the best way to excavate the ground, the best way to control the ground at the face of excavation and the preferred method for supporting the ground around the tunnel in a manner that is safe for the workers and stable with respect to all of the overlying and adjacent existing structures. If it is proposed to use some form of TBM in order to build the tunnel, then the TBM becomes central to all three of these activities and becomes an integral part of managing the risks associated with these activities."

With ore grades continually decreasing and finer mill feed requirements, it becomes increasingly important to have the capability to handle the larger tonnages economically. With the 10 ft. Standard capable of reducing 1,633 metric tons per hour (1,800 short tons per hour) to 80 percent passing 50 MM (2 inches) and the 10 ft. Short Head following to produce a mill feed of all minus 12 MM (1/2 inch) at a rate of 608 metric tons per hour (670 short tons per hour), we feel significant savings will be realized in installation and operating costs. The largest concentration of cost in the secondary and tertiary crushing stations is the building itself that houses the process equipment. An example of the savings to be attained can be seen from an examination of a 40,820 metric ton (45,000 short ton) per day crushing plant. A total of nine 7 ft. Symons Cone crushers is used to generate 12 MM (1/2 inch) ball mill feed. The average center distance between units is 6.1 M (20 feet) and allowing a 6.1 M (20 feet) nominal distance from the centerline to the wails, the building becomes 61 M (200 feet) long. For this production rate, four 10 ft. Symons Cone crushers would be required. With the 10 ft. crushing plant requiring a center distance spacing of 7.6 M (25 feet), the building length totals approximately 38 M (125 feet). Construction costs vary depending on location, but a reduction in building length from 61 M (200 feet) to 38 M (125 feet) will result in estimated savings of between $2,500,000 and S4,000,000. While the 10 ft. Symons Cone has been involved in a number of feasibility studies for some time, the Process Machinery Division of Rexnord commenced detail design work on the 10 ft. Cone crusher in 1972. For comparison purposes, the 10 ft. and 7 ft. capacities are given in Table 1.

For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. "Lindgren (1933) defined a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks associated with large quantities of gold and rare earth elements (REE) that extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Texas and eastern Mexico. The North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt since has been exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits. In New Mexico, Mid-Tertiary alkaline to calc-alkaline rocks are found with seven types of deposits in these districts: (1) polymetallic epithermal/mesothermal veins, (2) gold-bearing breccias/quartz veins, (3) Cu-Au, Au and Mo porphyry deposits, (4) skarns and carbonate-hosted deposits, (5) iron skarns and replacement bodies (with some gold), (6) gold placers, and (7) Th-REE (with some U, Nb) epithermal veins. Some of New Mexico’s largest gold and REE deposits are found within this belt. Their origin is not well understood, but a compilation of new data (age dates, isotopic and chemical analyses) allows for a better understanding. The diversity of igneous rocks and associated mineral deposits along this belt suggests that this region is characterized by highly fractionated and differentiated; multiple pulses of magmas and involves both upper mantle and lower crustal sources. Once magmas and metal-rich fluids reached shallow levels, local structures and wall rock compositions determined distribution of and final style of intrusions and resulting mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION Lindgren (1933) was one of the first geologists who noted that a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Trans-Pecos Texas, and eastern Mexico (Fig. 1) and that these rocks contain relatively large quantities of gold, fluorine, zirconium, rare earth elements (REE), and other elements. Since then, the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt has been explored and exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits, especially gold. The North American Cordilleran alkaline belt is a north-south belt of alkaline igneous rocks and crustal thickening, roughly coinciding with the Great Plains physiographic margin with the Basin and Range (Rio Grande rift) and Rocky Mountains physiographic provinces (Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Bonham, 1988; Thompson, 1991a; Richards, 1995; McLemore, 1996; Jensen and Barton, 2000; Kelley and Luddington, 2002). Deposits within this belt have produced significant amounts of gold in the United States and Canada and include Cripple Creek, Colorado (702 metric tons of gold production), Black Hills, South Dakota (235 metric tons gold production) and Landsky-Zortman, Montana. In New Mexico, the North American Cordilleran alkaline belt extends from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Raton, southward to the Cornudas Mountains, in the northern Trans-Pecos alkaline belt (Fig. 2). The alkaline-igneous related mineral deposits in New Mexico have been referred to as Great Plains Margin (GPM) deposits by North and McLemore (1986, 1988) and McLemore (1996, 2001). Alternative classifications by other workers include Au-Ag-Te veins (Cox and Bagby, 1986; Bliss et al., 1992; Kelley et al., 1998), alkalic-gold or alkaline-igneous related gold deposits (Fulp and Woodward, 1991a; Thompson, 1991a, b; Bonham, 1988; Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Richards, 1995), porphyry gold deposits, and the North American Cordilleran belt of alkaline igneous rocks (Woolley, 1987; Mutschler et al., 1991)."

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY World mineral trade during 1960 to 1984 has shown substantial changes both in value and tonnage. Although fuel commodities dominated total mineral trade during this period, this paper will focus attention primarily on nonfuel minerals. Brazil and Australia, modest producers of iron ore in 1960, have become dominant producers and exporters, together accounting for about half of major iron ore exports in 1984, far surpassing traditional export suppliers such as Sweden. Australia has also become the largest producer and trader of bauxite and alumina, and worldwide alumina trade has increased at the expense of bauxite trade. Similarly, shipments of ferroalloys have increased more than shipments of ores such as those of chromium and manganese. Canada, retaining its first rank in world export of zinc, has become also the leading source of potash and sulfur in world trade, and South Africa has been the dominant factor in chromite, manganese and their respective ferroalloys. Developing countries' share of world copper trade has increased, with Chile maintaining first rank, but developed industrialized countries have continued to dominate production and trade of lead and zinc. Phosphate, sulfur, and potash have been the principal crude nonmetallic minerals traded worldwide. Looking to the near future, dramatic increases in export of iron ore, phosphate, potash and sulfur are not envisaged. Bauxite exports will continue to decline relative to alumina but at a slower rate than in the recent past. Zinc concentrate will continue to be exported but lead will be traded more as metal than as concentrate. For iron and steel, there will be some production shift from traditional producers to certain developing countries and recently industrializing developing countries such as Brazil, India, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan. In the following sections dealing with specific commodities, it should be understood that information is presented only on the major forms of each commodity that move in trade, and only for a selected group of countries for each commodity or major form of each commodity. Thus, totals shown or mentioned generally represent only the totals of figures presented here and do not include estimates for minor forms of material or for countries that are not listed. However, the data provided is regarded as sufficiently complete to reflect major patterns and trends, and exclusions are there- fore not seen as affecting conclusions that may be drawn from the material provided. FUEL AND NONFUEL TRADE Values of Fuel and Nonfuel Trade The value of world export trade in major mineral commodities (ores, concentrates and scrap, crude minerals, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, nonmetallic minerals and mineral fuels) in 1983, the latest year for which comprehensive data are available, was reported by the United Nations in May 1985 to have totaled over 514 billion current U.S. dollars (Table 1). This was 79% of the historic record high of nearly $649 billion ,current dollars set in 1980, but almost 18 times the current dollar value reported for 1960. [1/] The value of these 1983 exports in constant 1960 dollars was $164 billion (Table 2), only 66% of the record 1980 high of almost $250 billion, and only about 5.7 times the 1960 dollar level.

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The company has since committed US$1.5 billion to construct the mine, mill and associated facilities. The first of two 50-kt/d (55,000-stpd) mill and flotation lines is currently being commissioned while engineering and construction continues on the second line. A high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) will ultimately take total throughput to 130 kt/d (142,000 stpd). The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level and it is situated in a wide east-west valley. Except for one small outcrop (Peñasquito), the area is covered by up to 30 m (98 ft) of alluvium.

In July 1997, Krupp Canada obtained the contract to design and supply the conveyor system for Chile's Los Pelambres copper mine expansion project. Progress on the overland conveyor system is currently on schedule. It is a challenging task to convey copper ore from an open-pit mine located on a mountain site 3,000 m (9,840 ft) above sea level down 1,300 m (4,265 ft) to the processing plant at the valley floor below. The Los Pelambres conveyor system moves copper ore at a rate of 8.7 ktlh (9,600 stph) and at a speed of 6 ml sec (1,180 ftlmin) for 12,750 m (41,830 ft). The distance is divided in three conveyors, each 1,800 mm (71 in.) wide. The largest conveyor is 6 km (3.7 miles) long. To protect against avalanches and rockslides, the conveyors run through a 12-km- (7.4-mile-) long tunnel system. The lowest of the three conveyors is equipped with a shuttling head end. With this, the conveyor discharge point can be moved back and forth by 100 m (330 ft), allowing it to build up a longitudinal stockpile at its end. To meet the extreme design parameters, the limits of conveyor design had to be pushed to record-setting marks. For instance, the ST-7800 steel cord conveyor belt is the strongest belt ever installed in a conveyor system. A total drive power of 25 MW (33,535 hp), consisting of 10 2.5-MW (3,352-hp) drives, is included in the design plans. In loaded condition, the electric motors act as generators and feed electric energy back into the power grid. The motors are controlled by variable frequency inverters that provide an infinite adjustment of motor speed. This technology allows starting and stop- ping the conveyors precisely along predetermined acceleration and deceleration ramps. This is done so harmful belt jerking and stress waves can be avoided.

There is an old saying in Canada: "Mines are made as much as discovered." What follows is Young's perception of his experience developing and financing the Cochrane Hill gold mine project. In 1974, I came back from rutile and zircon exploration and mining in Australia. I became interested in a copper, lead, and zinc project in the Bathurst District, New Brunswick. Much field work had already been done but I was convinced that a reinterpretation of the geophysical work left room to enlarge on the known mineralization. So, with my own money I put a property deal together, found an underwriter willing to raise $100,000, and had a lawyer produce a prospectus. The prospectus was ultimately accepted for filing by the Ontario Securities Commission and I acquired funding and began work. It did not take many drill holes to determine that the interpretation was not geologically valid. However, while drilling was going on, geophysical and geochemical explorations indicated interesting anomalous zones elsewhere on the property. But by now the base metal market climate had soured and the $50,000 I had left was not enough to evaluate the new results. So I decided to farm out the property. A data folio was produced and the property was optioned to a major mining company, with Northumberland Mines Ltd. retaining a 20% free, carried interest. By 1976, the market for junior issues was so bad no under¬writer would even talk to a geologist and I still had the $50,000 in the bank and was looking for something to initiate. A Project That Went Nowhere Market research indicated that the Toronto area imported fine calcium carbonate fillers from Georgia, Alabama, and Vermont. I was aware of the specs and the fact that there is a large marble belt in Eastern Ontario. After some prospecting, I found an interesting deposit. The product was slightly high in silica and low on brightness. Research work eliminated the silica and corrected the brightness. So, with insufficient money we launched a feasibility study. This included diamond drilling, bulk sampling, special fine grinding and air classification tests, and an in-depth market survey. Our product was as good or better than those on the market. Our advantage was that delivery could be made by a two-hour truck haul to the customer. The present system of rail delivery had many problems, especially in winter. Despite everything looking rosy, we ran into a stone wall. The underwriters were singularly unimpressed because the public saw little glamour in a substance most people had never heard of. The issue would have been difficult-if not impossible-to sell. Banks and government agencies took the position that if we could get long term take-or-pay contracts then they would lend the required capital. None of the suppliers, however, would even consider a contract until production had begun and they could evaluate the production material. It was a classic "catch 22" situation. I have gone into this in some detail to show how tough the industrial mineral market can be. We eventually optioned this calcium carbonate property to a major corporation. The option agreement would give us a free, carried 15% and the right to buy up to 40% for contributing 25% of the production costs. But the experience left my company in poor financial shape. To survive, I think the entrepreneur-geologist must always have at least one project in reserve, an emergency plan. I had been searching out a new project to work on, after the calcium carbonate option was wrapped up. It was gold. Gold intrigued me and I knew quite a bit about Nova Scotian gold. I felt that with any rise in price, many of the former high-grade gold mines would have interesting potential for the larger, low grade portions of the deposits. That is how I happened on Cochrane Hill, where much work had been done in the early 1970s when gold as $4.82/g ($150/ oz). This time my timing was good. No sooner had Northumberland signed an option agreement than gold prices started to rise. In six months, they went to $27.331g ($850/oz). Even so, financing gold prospects in early 1980 was still not easy. It had been years since gold financing had been undertaken. A whole new generation of investors, with no knowledge of gold mining, had grown up. So, with accounting and legal council, we decided on a semiprivate "seed money" offering. Under the new Ontario Securities Act, this was a new-and partly tax sheltered-concept. At the time, it was very innovative.

In the U.S. coal mining industry, most spontaneous combustion fires occur in longwall or worked-out gob areas. In order to reduce the fire hazard caused by spontaneous combustion, it is important to understand how ventilation and gob characteristics affect the spontaneous heating process. Given the difficulty to conduct field tests in such an environment, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to investigate the effects of ventilation and gob characteristics on the spontaneous heating process in longwall gob areas. Two longwall panels with a bleeder ventilation system were simulated. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using the Arrhenius rate law and kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale studies. The heat generated from the spontaneous heating is transported by convection and conduction, and oxygen and the oxidation products are transported by convection and diffusion. Unsteady state simulations were conducted with different ventilation conditions and gob permeability distributions. The ventilation parameters varied in the simulations are the pressure at the bottom of the bleeder shaft and regulator resistance in the second entry inby the longwall face.

A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it comes into contact with the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb onto bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can facilitate the adsorption of oleic acid onto bastnaesite. Results from attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that all of these collectors adsorb strongly onto bastnaesite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected. The ATR-FTIR results confirm those obtained by AFM. In general, hydroxamic acid collectors (HA and SHA) adsorb onto bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

In a typical mining operation, run-of-mine (ROM) ore is crushed and screened to achieve a desired particle size distribution and then fed to processing equipment for further refining. For an operation to be profit-able, the ore handling system from the mine face to final product loadout must be reliable. However, the handling system components do not always perform as expected and production problems related to material flow occur. These problems include flow stoppages, limited live storage capacities, uncontrollable flow, segregation, spillage and dust emissions. These result in lost production, excessive maintenance, safety and environmental issues, and even structural failures, in some cases. Flow patterns Flow problems and their solutions can be best understood by first learning how bulk solids flow. As bulk solids discharge by gravity from a storage system, primarily two types of flow patterns can develop: funnel flow and mass flow. Figure 1 shows a schematic of these two flow patterns. In funnel flow, only a portion of the material is in motion during discharge, which flows toward the outlet through a channel that forms within the stagnant material. Funnel flow occurs when a hopper is not sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the walls or when the outlet is not fully effective. In mass flow, all of the material is in motion whenever any is discharged ? there is no stagnant material. Mass flow occurs when the hopper is sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the hopper walls. Shallow valleys are not permitted and the outlet must be fully effective. A third type of flow pattern, called expanded flow, can develop when a mass flow hopper (or hoppers) is placed beneath a funnel flow hopper or bin. The mass flow hopper is designed to activate a sufficiently large flow channel in the funnel flow hopper to avoid flow problems due to a rathole. The flow pattern in which a bulk solid discharges from a storage system strongly influences the flow problems that may occur in that facility.

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) was designed and built at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in 1992 for use in Antarctica. The TBM system was tested at the South Pole where a 120-m long tunnel was bored to prove the concept. Modifications were made to the system resulting from this work. In 1999,boring of a 600-mutilidor began as part of the new South Pole Station. Tunneler hydraulics reliability problems prevented the completion of the tunnel before the end of the short construction season. This paper discusses the design and operation of the TBM, proposed solutions to the problems encountered, and current operations of the system.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.
