Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

The gold mining industry has mainly relied upon the use of highly polluting chemicals, such as mercury and cyanide to recover gold from its ores. The Coal Gold Agglomeration (CGA) process was developed some years ago and has the advantage in that gold is recovered by a procedure which has little or no negative impact on the environment. A gold ore containing liberated gold particles is contacted with coal-oil agglomerates, where by the gold is recovered into the coal/oil phase. Laboratory scale batch tests were performed on an artificial mixture gold slurry and gold recoveries of up to 85% were found under optimized conditions. By recycling the coal/oil phase, it was found that the gold loading onto the agglomerates was increased. Tests performed on an industrial ore yielded slightly lower gold recoveries, and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis on the coal/oil phase showed that minerals other than gold was recovered into this phase. A comparative study was conducted whereby the CGA process was compared to mercury amalgamation. Gold recoveries obtained through amalgamation were 15% lower than by the agglomeration process, which indicates that this process can be considered favourably as an alternative to amalgamation.

The kinetics of the dissolution of colloidal silver in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated with the aim of developing a relatively rapid and convenient method for monitoring the ?leaching power? of solutions typically used in the cyanidation process. Experimental results obtained are consistent with an electro-chemical model, in which the mixed potential is set up in the active region of the polarization curve for the anodic dissolution of silver, giving rise to a rate of dissolution which is controlled by the rate of mass transport of either cyanide or oxygen to the surface of the silver. The rate of dissolution of colloidal silver was found to respond to variations in the reactant concentrations in a similar manner to gold (and silver) in a typical free-milling ore. The use of this technique for the monitoring and control of the cyanide leach process is discussed.

The validity of a steady state assumption made by Adams and Nicol (1986) in the modelling of the elution of gold from activated carbon was investigated. It is shown that the accuracy of the steady state approximation is dependent, not only on the magnitudes of the solution flow rate and reactor volume, but also on the lumped elution rate constant. Under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady state assumption was inaccurate. This could be circumvented in this instance by applying a rigorous general model which accounts for unsteady state behaviour in the solution and in the activated carbon to the experimental data.

The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers. The issues that need addressing are generally well known and include: ?South Africa was ranked 45th out of 46 i.r.o. productivity ?SMMEs contribute 1% to exports compared to 40-60% for the ?tigers? ?High unemployment ?Limited skills of the majority of workers ?Slow growth rate of the economy ?The vast majority of suppliers are not world-class ?The vast majority of suppliers are not export or marketing orientated. In order to survive, all parties, i.e. government, labour and business, will have to play their part.

Molten NaNO3-NaNO2-KNO3mixture is used as a heat transfer medium at high temperature. One of the most important properties of this mixture is the heat capacity. In the present work, the enthalpy change with temperature was measured by the drop calorimetric method to evaluate the heat capacity. The results are summarized as follows: The enthalpy of the mixture increased linearly with the temperature. From the slope of the line, the heat capacity was evaluated. The heat capacity of pure NaNO3, NaNO2and KNO3was 0.129,0.110 and 0.142 kJ/mol/K, respectively. These values are in fairly good agreement with the published data. In the binary and ternary systems, the molar additivity of heat capacity, which is well known as Neumann-Kopp’s law, was obtained. The heat capacity of HTS1and HTS2, which are well known ternary mixtures of practical use, were in the range of published data.

Mineral processing models have been discussed for many years but it was not until digital computers became available about 1960 that serious attempts at circuit simulation could be carried out. Even then the work was primarily academic until PCs could be used by engineers in plants and design offices in the mid-1980s. Since then simulation has moved quickly and it is now at the point that most processes can be simulated reasonably accurately for purposes of design and optimization. There are still some significant deficiencies, notably in dry grinding and separation, and in the chemical interactions in flotation. Future work will involve: ?improvements of existing models ?dynamic simulation for automatic control and, in particular ,for training which is a weak link ?using advanced simulation models to predict liberation and separation from data acquired from SEM-based liberation analysers. Eventually mineral processes models will be part of total simulation systems which will incorporate mining and downstream processes including all environmental impacts.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology?s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested in developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late Eighties and early Nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. Beneficiation studies were conducted on a Portuguese feldspar ore, in order to obtain final products capable of being used in the ceramic industry. A simple scrubbing operation is enough to break the lumps in the feed. The ore deposit contains ca 35 x 106tonnesfrom which, by screening, three main products could be obtained. This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the 500/74 µm fraction, which constitutes about 27% of the ore, assaying 9.42% Al2O3,equivalent to approximately ca 46% feldspar, with a mean iron content of 0.29% iron oxides. Magnetic separation and froth flotation testwork was carried out, in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. Magnetic separation alone decreased the iron content of the feed to values between 0.04 and 0.08% iron oxides with an average yield greater than 90%. Flotation with HF, provided a feldspar recovery of 45?46% with a concentrate assaying 17.6% Al2O3. The use of H2SO4, gave a recovery of 35?36% of feldspar concentrate, assaying 16.1% Al2O3. However, economic and environmental advantages of using sulphuric acid may compensate for the lower mass recovery. The iron content of0.12% iron oxides in these concentrates, could be reduced to 0.04?0.05%, by further magnetic separation.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.

A prediction model, developed by Central Mining Research Institute (India) for evaluation of fire risk rating of underground coal mine panels in bord and pillar working in respect of their proneness to spontaneous heating, is presented in this paper. The concept used in this model is innovative and user friendly. This model may be applied to a panel where extraction is carried out using any of the techniques: i) depillaring with formation of small pillars as final operation, ii) extraction by broadening of galleries, iii) depillaring with hydraulic sand stowing, and iv) depillaring with caving. Here, major fire risk parameters are short-listed and divided into three broad groups in accordance with the nature of their contribution to the spontaneous heating of a mine panel. The paper describes the procedure for estimating the fire risk rating of individual groups using separate objective type models developed for this purpose. Then it evaluates the overall fire risk rating of the panel by combining the fire risk ratings of all the three broad groups. The model is tested with the field data collected from different collieries spreading across the country and with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness. Input-output analysis is a major branch of quantitative economics, and is used to analyse the flow of goods and services between production sectors in a national economy. Its purpose is to determine the relative value-adding capacity of each sector. The model has also, in recent years, found increasing use in assessing the environmental and ecological impact of development projects. It has, however, never been applied to individual production facilities, such as large mines, which themselves have complex economic structures, through which there is a flow of goods and services. Conventional cost and accounting systems, as used on mines, treat production sectors as separate cost centres, and do not determine the inter-relationships between them. This can lead to incorrect conclusions on the relative value of sectors and their impact on the total economic performance of the facility. This paper explains the basic principles of input-output analysis, and presents an example of its application to a simplistic model of a mine, which is used in the absence of any real data. The paper concludes that, by forcing definition of the value adding function of each sector, input output analysis will facilitate control of inputs, or costs. This will result in optimal application of resources and exploitation of ore reserves. The authors realise the model needs to be tested on an operating mine, and hope this paper will result in an opportunity to do so. The concept of selectively extracting copper from a low-grade dump leach solution followed by stripping the copper into an acid solution from which electrowon copper cathodes could be produced occurred to the Minerals Group of General Mills in the early 1960s.This simple, elegant idea has resulted in a technology by which about 2.2 million tonnes of high quality copper cathode was produced in year 2000. The growth of this technology is traced overtime with a discussion of the key plants, the key people and the important advances in leaching, plant design, reagents and electrowinning that have contributed to the growth of this technology. Some thoughts on potential further advances in the technology are also given.

Detailed investigations have been conducted into 21 rockbursts which caused damage to excavations in deep South African gold mines, in many instances resulting in the death or serious injury of workers. The objective of this study is to determine the principal factors controlling the severity and distribution of damage, so that strategies to reduce the hazard of rockbursts may be developed. It was found that the source mechanism is often controlled by the mine layout, and regional structures such as faults and dykes; while local rock conditions and support systems strongly influence the location and severity of damage. In the short term the most important lever for reducing the rockburst hazard is the effective implementation of existing rock engineering knowledge and technology.

The junior and small-scale mining sectors in South Africa play an important role in the livelihoods of numerous communities. Mining presents an opportunity, in the post-1994 democratic era, for many individuals to obtain access to much required empowerment and socio-economic development. These sectors are, however, not without numerous characteristics that pose problems for operators, legislators, and other role-players. Mining is inherently risky, with operators experiencing frequent difficulties and challenges throughout the life of mine. Opportunity exists, and needs to be enhanced, for junior and small-scale prospects and operations to include technical risk assessment techniques in documentation presented in search for funding, and in optimizing monthly planning and longer-term functioning. The focus here is to explore how the risk management cycle may currently be applied to a mineral resource suitable for exploitation by the junior and small-scale mining sectors. No management process can create additional value in the ground, but various available mechanisms can go a long way to quantifying the inherent risk that exists, highlighting the need to manage the risks and hopefully allowing the entrepreneur access to the intrinsic opportunities of the emerging mining sector in South Africa.

Ongoing rockpass problems on mines within the South Africa region, prompted AngloGold Ashanti to embark on a risk assessment of major rockpasses. This commenced with the collection of relevant data to identify gaps in the available knowledge and identify existing problems. This was followed by an assessment of rockpass layouts to determine existing and potential interactions with other excavations. An initial risk assessment has been completed and the rockpasses have been ranked in terms of their risk profile. The lack of geological data and an easy and reliable method of surveying rockpasses have been identified as problem areas. Shortcoming is terms of rockpass management procedures have also been identified. Further work is required to quantify the risk in terms of probability of occurrence and consequences.

The distinction between real estate ownership and that of interests in the property is fundamental to the appraisal of mineral properties. This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

Nevertheless, a practitioner knows that there is a broader context in which the practice of sampling takes place. This broader context, being less well defined than the theory of correct sampling, receives correspondingly less exposure which this commentary??prompted by?
