The high-sulfur bauxite in Henan Province was used as raw material. The grinding fineness, pH value and collector dosage on its desulfurization performance, and industrial flotation desulfurization process were studied. The best flotation desulfurization conditions were grinding fineness of 75%, pH of 8.5, and collector of 600 g/t. “One coarse, one cleaning and one sweep” closed-circuit flotation was established as the industrial flotation desulfurization process. After the closed circuit test, the sulfur content of aluminum concentrate with the yield of 93% was 0.23%, and the sulfur removal rate was 83.16%, and the sulfur content of tailings (sulfur concentrate) was 15.09%. "SynopsisThis study proposes a methodology for evaluating the risk of coal bumps in multiple-seam longwall mining. Both the stress field and the total energy release (TER) during retreat were evaluated in the specified case involving multiple-seam mining using the LaModel program. The results of numerical simulations indicated that both the peak vertical stresses on the panel edges and the peak TERs in the outby longwalls increased significantly as the horizontal offsets were reduced from 60 m to zero. With the comprehensive consideration of the stress field and TERs, a conservative offset of 60 m was ultimately adopted when developing the gateroads of the lower panel in the field. The field measurements indicated that coal bumps were avoided completely by employing the proposed design, and the maximum roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib convergences of the tailgate during retreat were only 360 mm and 576 mm, respectively.IntroductionCoal bumps – sudden, violent bursts of coal – pose a serious threat to the safe excavation of coal. Their occurrence depends on the properties of the surrounding rocks, stress field, and dynamic disturbance. The complexity of the mechanism of coal bumps is further enhanced in multiple-seam mining due to seam interaction. Multiple-seam mining is most frequently found in the coalfields in eastern China, such as Xuzhou, Xinwen, Zaozhuang, and Huainan. In the past, due to issues of availability, economics, and ignorance of the potential risk in multipleseam mining, coal seams in such conditions were mined without proper planning to account for seam interaction. Fortunately, studies published over the past three decades have raised awareness of the problems associated with multiple-seam mining, and indicated that the ground control issues induced by multiple-seam mining can be avoided and/or minimized with proper planning.A number of technical studies pertaining to the design of multiple-seam mines have been published. These studies can be divided into two groups based on their methodologies of design: empirical (Chekan and Listak, 1993; Haycocks and Zhou, 1990, Matetic et al.; 1987a, 1987b) and numerical approaches (Li et al., 2000; Maleki, 2007; Mark, 2007; Peng, 2007; Zipf, 2005). The majority of the extant studies on the interaction mechanisms in multiple-seam mining have focused on the load transfer during operation, resulting in the proposal of the pressure bulb theory (Forrest et al., 1987; Haycocks and Karmis, 1983; Peng, 2008; Peng and Chandra, 1980) and pressure arch theory (Holland, 1973; Oram and Ponder, 1997) to guide multiple-seam mine design. However, neither, of these theories can be used to evaluate the potential for coal bumps."

JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. The water separation pump is a highly effective alternative for medium pressure (1.6?6.4 MPa) slurry pumping requirements and has been widely used in industry since it was invented in the 1980s. The water separation pump is powered by a single or multi-stage clean water centrifugal pump. The water separation pump combines the advantage of high flow centrifugal pumps with the high pressure capability of reciprocating pumps. The clean water pressure is exchanged to slurry kinetic energy through the separating chamber, the principle component of the water diaphragm pump. Currently in its the third generation, the separation chamber uses a ball and flexible water seat that provides a true separation mechanism and can completely isolate the two fluids with near zero water loss.

A modified germanium recovery process in conventional zinc metallurgy, based on the understanding that ferric hydroxide has strong ability to coprecipitate germanium element, was presented. The relaxed lab-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate its technological feasibility. The experimental results obtained show the new process has great competitive advantage over the conventional one.

The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

The indirect estimation of intact rock properties is particularly useful for preliminary investigations in engineering projects. In this paper we examine the usability of electrical resistivity, a nondestructive measurement, for the prediction of physical and mechanical rock characteristics. Physico-mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, Brazilian tensile, density, and porosity tests) and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on specimens of 36 rock types. Before the resistivity tests, the specimens were completely saturated with saline solution. Evaluation of the test results showed that there are medium or strong correlations between resistivity and rock properties. There are also strong or stronger correlations between the two parameters for the rock classes. The regression equations developed were statistically tested, and their validity was confirmed. The results were also compared with previous studies. The conclusion is that electrical resistivity measurement can be used for reliably estimating physical and mechanical rock characteristics.

Strategic mine planning is concerned with the decisions that determine the value of the business, while tactical planning deals with the tasks to realize that value. When tasked with formulating a strategic mine plan, the mining engineer often turns to commercially available software. However, these software packages have limited applicability to the RBM situation. Adopting a simpler, back to basics approach founded on a deep understanding of the economics of the orebody has the advantage of providing a clear logic to guide tactical planning. By creating a coherency between strategic mine planning, and tactical planning the likelihood of successfully executing the plans and attaining the value promised by the strategic plan is increased. This paper describes the reasons why RBM embarked on a strategic mine planning process, the rationale of choosing the process, and the process itself.

The MRMR Classification System was developed specifically for mining applications, namely caving operations, and is one of three rock mass classification systems used in the South African mining industry today. Increased usage of the MRMR Classification System has raised concerns that it does not adequately address the role played by discontinuities, veins and cemented joints in a jointed rock mass. To address these concerns, Laubscher and Jakubec introduced the In-Situ Rock Mass Classification System (IRMR) in the year 2000. Although the IRMR System is more applicable to a jointed rock mass than the MRMR System, a quantitative comparison of the MRMR and IRMR Classification Systems indicates that there is not a significant difference between the resultant rock mass rating values derived from the two Classification Systems.

It is desirable to have a model, or method, for major project development, which will enable flexible modelling of separation circuits. This ability improves the understanding of circuits and how they should be operated, especially in a design phase, where various options are evaluated and decisions are made on the required number of stages and configuration. This paper describes existing gravity separation circuit modelling theory and concepts, as defined by Holland-Batt1 (separation window, separation efficiency and proportionality of efficiency). The crux of the paperis the application of numerical analysis to fit raw separation data by means of a modified Bézier-Spline. The paper proposes an alternative to the theory developed by Holland-Batt that provides more flexibility in the modelling of separation stages and curves, which include S-shaped curves. The paper proposes a solution to the challenge of continuously extrapolating data, and the first difficulty normally encountered, which is the fitting of an appropriate empirical formula to raw data.

This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. The dual-electrode direct current (DC) arc furnace uses two graphite electrodes, one connected as cathode and one as anode. Such an arrangement avoids some of the design difficulties associated with the anode hearth traditionally used in single-electrode and twin-cathode DC furnaces, but can introduce other design and operational difficulties including deflection of the arcs toward the furnace walls. Counter-intuitively, both arc jets in a dual-electrode furnace travel from the electrode down to the bath surface, despite carrying electric current in opposite directions?this is suggested in the theory of the governing equations of arc formation, and confirmed by experiments using high-speed photography. The dual-electrode arc system at small pilot-plant scale is studied using a transient magnetohydrodynamic model capable of predicting arc deflection and interaction from first principles, and the results are compared to the behaviour of twin-cathode systems at similar power. Finally, a simple arrangement of the furnace busbars, M configuration, is shown to provide some passive protection against arc deflection.

ABSTRACT: Short-term strength, damage and healing boundaries for rock salt are experimentally determined and integrated into the Hou/Lux-MDS damage-healing model. This model can be used to describe the mechanical behaviour of rock salt during a damaging process (under high stress to strength ratios) as well as during a healing process (under very low stress to strength ratios with high confining pressure). The development of the damage and the stress to strength ratio in the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) of a storage cavern under a minimum internal pressure as well as the development of the healing of damage and the stress to strength ratio under a subsequent maximum internal pressure are investigated project-related. The results of the investigation make it possible to shift the permissible minimum pressure boundary down, allowing the optimisation of decisive economic characteristics of storage caverns. RÉSUMÉ: Le comportement court terme, l’endommagement et les conditions de colmatage pour le sel gemme ont été étudiés expérimentalement et intégrés dans le model endommagement-colmatage Hou/Lux-MDS. Ce modèle permet de décrire le comportement mécanique de sel gemme pendant le processus d’endommagement (sous fort rapport contrainte-résistance) et le comportement du processus de colmatage sous très faible rapport contrainte-résistance avec forte pression de confinement. Le développement d’endommagement et le rapport de contrainte-résistance dans une zone d’endommagée (EDZ) d’une cavité de stockage avec un maximum de pression de soutènement ont été étudiés. Les résultats de cette étude permettent de conclure qu’il est possible de baisser la pression de soutènement, et par conséquent d’optimiser les caractéristiques économiques décisives des cavité de stockage. ZUSAMENFASSUNG: Für Steinsalz werden Festigkeits-, Schädigungs- und Verheilungsgrenze experimentell ermittelt und in das Schädigungs-Verheilungs-Modell Hou/Lux-MDS integriert. Damit kann das mechanische Verhalten von Steinsalz sowohl bei einem Schädigungsprozess (mit hohen Ausnutzungsgraden) wie auch bei einem Verheilungsprozess (mit niedrigen Ausnutzungsgraden) beschrieben werden. Projektbezogen werden die Schädigungs- und Ausnutzungsgradentwicklung in der Auflockerungszone einer Speicherkaverne unter einem minimalen Innendruck sowie die Verheilungs- und Ausnutzungsgradentwicklung unter einem anschließenden maximalen Innendruck untersucht. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse erlauben, die zulässige Minimaldruckgrenze nach unten zu verschieben, so dass entscheidende wirtschaftliche Kenngrößen von Speicherkavernen optimiert werden können.

"As part of the planning system at each division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, the Mine Planning Department is required to produce a detailed production schedule for each shaft.Because of the difficulties in producing a schedule which satisfies all the mining constraints, and because of the large clerical effort involved, the full range of possible schedules can never be considered.It has been found possible to produce a schedule using linear programming which satisfies the majority of the many varied mining constraints. Computer programs have been written to enable the mine planning department to use this mathematical system without assistance.The system has a large degree of flexibility to enable the planner to include conditions which cannot be incorporated readily in the linear program. This system permits the more efficient production and evaluation of schedules and reduces the amount of clerical effort."

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) in South Africa is administered by the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) for the mining industry, and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) for all other sectors. Thus far, EIA research has focused on the process under the auspices of DEAT but none has focused on the EIA process that has been mandatory in the South African mining industry since 2004. Using the Lee and Colley(Lee et al.13) review package as a basis, a review model specifically tailored to the needs of the mining industry was applied to review the quality of a sample of 20 environmental impact reports (EIRs)approved by the DME. Results reveal that 85% of the EIRs are of a satisfactory quality. Presentational and descriptive components generally achieved higher quality grades than the analytical components such as impact magnitude and alternatives. The results show that in spite of some areas of weakness, and in spite of being conducted in terms of different legislation, EIR quality in the mining sectors appears to conform to the overall standard of quality of EIRs in other sectors in South Africa, and is also on a par with quality abroad. Hence, despite the criticism that DME is usurping the role of DEAT, it is concluded that EIRs of comparable standard are being produced, and that the quality of EIRs in the mining sector do not provide supporting evidence for this criticism. However, EIR quality is only a single aspect of EIA effectiveness, others including action and implementation of EIA proposals and mitigation measures.
