SYNOPSIS The theory of elasticity has been shown to provide a means of determining the stresses and displacements induced by mining in deep level hard rock mines. This theory has been incorporated into an electrical resistance analogue on which the plane of a reef or ore-body can be modelled to enable the rapid determination of stresses and displacements at points in the plane of the reef. This electrical analogue has been used to determine energy release rates caused by scattered mining, which, to some extent, is a measure of the degree of hangingwall fracture. A correlation between predicted energy release rates and actual underground conditions in stopes in the O.F.S. goldfields has been encouraging enough to define parameters on which future stoping layouts can be based. The use of the elastic theory through the analogue has been extended to the assessment of the influence of stoping operations on off-reef excavations. Underground conditions at damaged and undamaged areas have been compared with predicted elastic stresses at the positions under review, resulting in the derivation of design parameters for use in siting off-reef excavations in the prevailing geological conditions in the O.F.S. and Klerksdorp goldfields. The analogue has also been used to assess the vulnerability of certain un mined dykes to bursting. Correlations between stresses induced on dykes by stoping and dyke behaviour underground has enabled critical stress levels to be determined for several persistent dykes occurring in the O.F.S. and Klerksdorp goldfields. A number of long and short term planning projects at mines operating in the Anglo American Corporation and General Mining and Finance Groups are described, where the data derived from the electrical resistance analogue is processed by computer programmes and assessed on the strength of the design factors derived from the correlation of field work and the elastic theory.

In the previous chapters we did not concern ourselves with the fact that the geostatistical properties of the regionalized variable x (z) are affected by the size of the support w. Ideally, when analysing an ore body O, we would like to determine the properties of point values in O, i.e. the properties of a regionalized variable with an infinitely small support, say w°. In practice, point values are never known. To measure the value of x at a point z we must take a sample of size w centred at z. For example, if we are interested in the grade at point z, w will be the volume of the sample 'centred in z; if we are interested in the metal accumulation at point z, w will be the area of the cross-section of the sample centred in z. We say that the measured property is a regularized variable, and so the semivariogram (or covariogram) calculated from the values obtained is also regularized. In the majority of the mining problems which can be solved by geostatistical methods, we are interested in the properties of blocks of ore and of samples with a finite non-point support. It will be shown in the following chapters that these problems can be solved by calculating the average value of the point sernivariogram in volumes or areas of finite dimension, or between such volumes or areas. These calculations would be simple if we knew the point semivariogram. This means that the point semivariogram has to be estimated from the observed regularized semivariogram(s).

[Consider a square block W in an ore body S2, to be valued from one centre sample w, and one corner sample w2 (Fig. 9.1). The sample set is ws = Iw,;w21. We can estimate the block average µw by the average of the sample values x, and x2: µw = 'z (x, + xz). (9.1) The error made is measured by the estimation variance: o' (ws to W) = 2 - (ws; W) - - (ws;ws) - - (W; W). In the example studied in § 8.4, where w, and w2 were considered to be points, we found that of (w, to W) was nearly one third smaller than o2E (w2 to W), therefore when estimating W one should give more weight to w, than to w2. Two methods of stress measurements have been executed on the surface and underground to con-struct an oil storage cavern using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method. The first measurement has been performed to make a design of the caverns before excavating and the second to confirm the stress state during excavation. Six measurements have been carried out in the hydro-fracturing test at the depths between –17.8 and 54.5m from the sea level and a single measurement in the overcoring test in a single borehole at the depth of –21m from the sea level. The ratios of the maximum horizontal to vertical stress measured using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method are 2.95 and 3.1, respectively. Also, the orientations of the maximum horizontal stress are N53E and N58E. These measurements show that both methods give almost same results and significant horizontal stresses are acting on this cavern. Deux méthodes de mesure de contrainte ont étè exécutées sur la surface de terrain et sous la terre pour construire une cavité de stockage de pétrole en utilisant l’hydro-fracturing et l’overcoring. La première mesure a étè faite pour le plan des cavités avant l’excavation et le seconde pour con-firmer l’état de contrainte durant l’excavation. "Underground mining is subject to various natural hazards such as seismic events, rockbursts, fire, and gas (methane). In general, an increase in the extraction depth causes an increase in the likelihood of these hazards, especially seismic activity and rockbursts. Dynamic phenomena such as rockbursts and tremors have been recorded on six continents: Europe (Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovenia), Asia (India, and China), North and South America (USA, Canada, and Chile), Africa (South Africa), and Australia. To select appropriate mine working supports for such dynamic phenomena, the performance characteristics of such support types must be determined under both static and dynamic load conditions.This article presents information regarding the application of rockbolts in Polish underground hard-coal mines. Dynamic phenomena occurring in the mines from 2004–2013 are also characterized. A methodology developed at the Central Mining Institute (GIG) for the laboratory testing of rockbolts is presented. In this methodology, the bolts are loaded by the direct impact of a free-moving mass (up to 20 000 kg) at speeds of up to 1.2 m/s. The facilities at GIG used to test the support under static and dynamic load conditions are characterized, and the results of laboratory tests on yielding bolts with a nominal capacity of 420 kN are presented. These types of bolts are commonly used for reinforcing steel arches and the surrounding rock mass in Polish coal mines. The results of the laboratory testing of yielding bolts are discussed.IntroductionSeismic events such as rock bumps and tremors occur with great frequency during underground mining. These phenomena have been reported in such countries as Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Slovenia, Russia, India, China, the USA, Canada, Chile, South Africa, and Australia (Brauner, 1991; Potvin, Hudyma, and Jewell, 2000; Kidybin??ski, 2003; Driad-Lebeau et al., 2005; Li, Cai, and Cai, 2007; Whyatt and Loken, 2009; Durrheim and Riemer, 2012; Holub, Rušajova, and Holec?ko, 2011). Descriptions of the dynamic events and their effects in the form of damage to or destruction of supports have been presented in many publications, both for hardrock mines as well as for coal mines (Brauner, 1991; Dubin??ski and Konopko, 2000; Heal, 2010; Heal and Potvin, 2007; Simser, Joughin, and Ortlepp, 2002; Kaiser and Cai, 2012; Cai 2013; Nierobisz, 2013; Mark, 2014; Masny and Prusek, 2015). One of the main goals of the research has been to develop methods, criteria, and guidelines for the selection of an optimal and safe support for mine workings located in areas of rock bumps or tremors. Example of such studies include the Canadian Rockburst Support Handbook (Kaiser, McCreath, and Tannant, 1996), or the principles presented in the literature (Li, 2010; Cai, 2013)."

Atomaer (Pty) Ltd is a technology-driven company with interests in Western Australian nickel. Atomaer (RSA) Pty Ltd is a process technology company operating in Southern Africa. It is a subsidiary of Atomaer Holdings Pty Limited (Atomaer), which has operating companies in Australia, Africa, South America, and Europe. In addition, Atomaer has substantial shareholdings in Braemore Resources Plc, a nickel company with interests in sulphide nickel projects in Western Australia and Southern Africa listed on the Alternative Investment Market of London Stock Exchange (AIM); Mintails Limited, a gold company with interests in gold operations in South Africa listed on the Australia Stock Exchange; and Brinkley Mining Plc, a uranium company with interests in Southern Africa listed on the AIM. Independence Platinum Limited (IPt) has been formed by Atomaer to undertake the commercial development and exploitation of Mintek's ConRoast technology with the strategic objective of providing independent smelting and refining facilities with lower capital and operating costs for the treatment and processing of platinum concentrates, including those with high chrome and/or nickel and/or low platinum group metal values, for the development of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa. The platinum mines of South Africa have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Complex for platinum production. However, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade, all of the platinum producers have begun to mine the UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. UG2 ore usually has lower platinum group metal contents and higher chrome values. The new junior resource companies have gained access primarily to UG2 reefs. Consequently, platinum mining is becoming more UG2-based and the resulting concentrates contain high levels of chromitite. UG2 concentrates are difficult to smelt in the current six-in-line submerged arc furnaces, and this leads to increased capital and operating costs for those smelting operations. The platinum mines of South Africa produce the majority of the world's platinum metal used in automotive catalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at a healthy rate into the future, the SA producers Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin, and Northam are planning to expand mining operations in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller new producers who are accessing other mineral resources are entering the buoyant market and will produce platinum concentrates for purchase or toll treatment. Hence, a shortage in both smelting and refining capacities is anticipated. Further smelting and refining facilities independent of the major platinum producers will be required in South Africa by 2010. Mintek's ConRoast technology is best suited to fill the need to treat a high proportion of UG2 concentrates in a cost-effective and technically efficient manner. Atomaer base metals technology has been developed for rapid leaching of nickel and other base metals from alloy. Significant reductions in capital and operating costs are expected from the combination of the two advances in process technology compared with that installed at the existing smelters and refineries that were established over 20 years ago. Independence Platinum will be listed on AIM and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2007, and developed as an independent, vertically-integrated platinum company using its independent smelting and base metals refining facilities as a strategic platform to promote the development and mining of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa through technical co-operation, strategic alliances, joint ventures, off-take, toll-refining, and marketing agreements.

A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for the expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated ?risk? via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Carbon Modelling Technology and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

The in-service degradation of the mechanical properties of steel components through the damage mechanism of high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), is a topic of concern in the refining and green hydrogen industry. This damage mechanism occurs in susceptible steels operating in environments at high temperatures and hydrogen pressures. The current investigation deals with the indirect monitoring of mechanical degradation via tracking of the swelling strain in affected structures. An autoclave with an AISI 316 shell was utilized to simulate accelerated HTHA damage at 550 °C and 46 bar for exposure times ranging from zero to 700 hours. The progress of the HTHA damage was tracked using encapsulated high-temperature strain gauges. The correlation between the swelling strain and mechanical property degradation was studied to develop a methodology for the continuous monitoring of embrittlement. The tensile sample orientation of the carbon steel plate was included as a variable, i.e., samples parallel, transverse, or perpendicular to the plate rolling direction were included, since it has been shown that the sample orientation influences the HTHA damage features. For the through-thickness orientation, and upon exceeding a threshold value of exposure time, all tensile properties were severely degraded, with values in the order of a 90 per cent reduction being observed. It was found that the degradation of carbon steel mechanical properties can be correlated to the swelling strain measured during exposure. The critical point for mechanical property degradation in the plate through-thickness orientation, whereafter a severe decrease in the ductility of the material occurs, was found to be in the order of 1% of the total swelling strain measured during exposure, equivalent to 65 microstrain. This threshold was found to be significantly lower than that expected from the literature, where limits of 400 to 1000 microstrain were postulated.

The risks associated with operating water reservoirs and tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are different because of their different purposes, methods of construction and operation, and characteristics of the materials impounded and their flow behaviour. Regardless of the differences, these two types of structures are often put in the same category when it comes to risk assessment and the application of relevant methodologies, which may result in unrealistic outcomes. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to apply the risk ranking methodology designed for water reservoirs to TDFs and overview the key differences between these two types of structures. We also provide a comparative analysis of the results obtained by conducting a risk assessment of the operation of a TSF, applying the method recommended by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and analyse the results using the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique. It is concluded that a more realistic evaluation of risk levels can be obtained by adopting a systematic approach to risk assessment in accordance with the traditional risk definition on which the FMEA technique is based.

The aim of this paper was to establish if mineral resource scarcity is a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The project objectives were achieved by investigating economically viable, and critical or strategic minerals remaining in South Africa, as well as resource scarcity, as a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The study found that some minerals in South Africa, such as iron ore, lead, manganese, gold, and cobalt have less than 50 years of economically viable mining remaining. At least 18 minerals can be classified indicatively as critical or strategic: aggregates, bauxite, chromite, cobalt, copper, gold, graphite, iron, limestone, lithium, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, platinum group metals, rare earth elements, silver, titanium, and vanadium. The classification was based on the minerals’ economic importance, supply risk, and potential use in the development and manufacturing of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that the scarcity of mineral resources is a critical driver for the country to transition to a circular economy. Other identified drivers include socio-economic factors, climate change commitments, and business objectives. All minerals are non-renewable resources and at risk of depletion, therefore sustainable extraction and use are critical. Priority should be directed at investigating circular economy opportunities and substitutes for commodities at risk of being depleted within the next 50 years. There is an opportunity for South Africa to transition from a minerals export-based model to one that promotes local mineral beneficiation and manufacturing of end products.

A computational model of a submerged arc furnace (SAF) used in the production of ferrochrome is presented. The model‘s intended use is to investigate the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the raw materials affect burden distribution and electrical resistance within the furnace. The model is built on the discrete element method and calculates the mechanical interactions of particle distributions resulting from the flow motion of typical raw materials used in the smelting of chromium ore. This model excludes the effects of thermodynamics, furnace chemistry, and heat transfer. It illustrates how the consumption of materials (chromite pellets, flux, and reductant) is affected by changes in electrode length, reductant fractions, and reductant sizing and density during the formation of a reductant bed. The resistance calculation algorithm developed by Mintek was applied to construct networks developed from particle contacts, which can quantitatively generate estimates of the electrode-to-electrode and electrode-to-bath electrical conduction conditions.

We present three technological scenarios for the recovery of valuable components from gangue, stored in the tailings dam at Kremikovtzi metallurgical plant in Bulgaria, into marketable iron-containing pellets. In the first approach the iron concentrate was recovered through a two-stage flotation process, desliming, and magnetic separation. In the second proposed process, the iron concentrate was subjected to four sequential stages of magnetic separation coupled with selective magnetic flocculation. The third route entails the not very common practice of magnetizing roasting, followed by selective magnetic flocculation, desliming, and magnetic separation. The iron concentrate was pelletized in a laboratoryscale pelletizer. Each technology has been assessed with regard to the mass yield of iron concentrate, the iron recovery. and the iron, lead, and zinc content in order to identify the most effective route.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10 ? 15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

The large scale of cave mines leads to many challenges, including operational logistics and geomechanics design. In current practice, pillar stability assessment relies almost exclusively on stress analysis. However, stability is also affected by other factors including those related to operational aspects of the mining method, the effects of which are difficult to account for during the design stages. In this paper we present a case study of the application of a machine learning approach to evaluate the influence of these operational factors on pillar stability at the Chuquicamata underground cave mine in northern Chile. Due to the likely multi-factorial damage process leading to collapses and considering the different pillar conditions, a tree-based machine learning method was used and analysed to improve the understanding of the relative importance of the various contributing factors. Unlike stress analysis methods, it does not require any a priori knowledge of failure mechanisms, nor the calibration of associated controlling parameters. The proposed random forest model predicted pillar collapses with 80% accuracy despite limited samples to model from. The main contributing factors to collapses were found to be related to available pillar volume, cave front geometry, and time under abutment stress conditions. The effects and interactions of such factors were also studied, showing that careful and improved control over operational conditions can significantly reduce the likelihood of pillar collapses. These conclusions could not have been obtained from stress analysis alone, illustrating the complementary nature of conventional stress analysis and machine learning approaches.

To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms. More than twenty years ago Sasol, ISCOR, and some parastatals played a major role in ensuring that South Africa had sufficient technical skills. When the economy became tight and business and government were pressurized to decrease costs, the first budgets that were reduced were the training budgets. It seemed to be too expensive and too time-consuming to train apprentices. According to Stacey2, this is a major strategic issue facing the mining industry in South Africa. Two factors added to the shortage of skills challenge: ? Skills erosion and job losses ? Artisans ? currently the economy produces 5 000 but the need is 12 500 ? Level of mechanization in South Africa less than 10 per cent ? Average age of operators and artisans is 50 ? Greater awareness of occupational health effects of hand-held drilling. ? Workplace challenges ? The impact of HIV/AIDS and other employee wellness issues ? Changes and challenges in workplace environment i.e. the mining industry.

This study was aimed at determining the effects of industrial action on profitability in the South African platinum mining sector. We compared companies where employees engaged in industrial action (affected companies) to strike-free companies (competing companies). Industrial action refers to strikes by rockdrillers, as these strikes typically result in the shutdown of production at the mines affected. A t-statistics analysis of significant differences in revenue and earnings of affected and non-affected platinum companies was conducted using data from platinum mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2015. Contrary to international studies, which suggest that the spillover effects of industrial action positively affect competing companies, our findings show that profits in the platinum sector decrease significantly during strike periods for both affected and competing companies. The results indicate industrial action is a threat to the profitability of all companies, and that employee demands should be prioritized and negotiated before they result in industrial action. Improved dialogue between management, labour unions, and employees in the platinum mining industry is recommended. The study contributes to the scanty literature on the effect of industrial action on the profitability of mining companies in a developing economy.

A procedure for designing an optimum pit to yield maximum profit is described. The volume in which a possible pit is considered is divided into discrete blocks, each of which is assigned an economic value equivalent to its worth as a block of mineable material. The profitability of a pit can then be generated by summing the blocks within the pit. The optimizing procedure starts at the surface level and proceeds downwards level by level, to obtain the optimum pit at each level. The method makes use of the fact that an optimum pit at a particular level must be completely contained in any optimum pit at a lower level. Procedures for generating block costs, and pits with various slope angles under the restriction of complete block removal are considered briefly. The main description is of the theory of the method and the computer program based on this. Iron ore pellet feed pressing has been one of the first and most successful applications of High- Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) in the minerals industry. Vale S.A. has been one of the pioneers in this application, currently with six HPGRs in operation in the pelletising plants of the Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil). In spite of the important advances in the technology, risks still exist when scaling-up the process from small-scale information. The present work takes advantage of the recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the HPGR performance, using the population balance model to evaluate the modified Torres and Casali model prediction in iron ore pellet feed pressing for different scales of operation. Results are presented that compare the HPGR performance in different operational scales for iron ore pellet feed pressing, demonstrating the confidence of this model-based approach for scale-up to full-scale HPGRs used in pressing iron ore concentrates. Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.
