In this paper the process of sampling and assaying as it relates in particular to the platinum group elements (PGEs) is presented. A discussion of the geology of PGE deposits is included to provide an understanding of the mineralization that is considered necessary prior to sampling, as this has a direct bearing on the mineral resource estimate and also the selection of an appropriate mining cut. The discussion includes the selection of the sampling technique (drilling or face sampling), the size of the sample relating to the requirements of the laboratory, the potential mining cut, as well as a reference to sampling theory. The selection of an assay technique that is appropriate and will yield the optimal result based on sample turnaround, precision, accuracy, and cost is then considered. Examples are drawn from work undertaken on the Bushveld Complex (Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite Layer, Platreef) and Great Dyke (Main Sulphide Zone). In this paper the authors describe the developed algorithms of short- and medium-term planning of underground mining operations. The algorithms were developed using the example of the flat-back cut-and-fill method, and provide multifactor accounting of mining conditions, technical and technological limitations: state and properties of the rock mass; the current mining situation; mining rules; availability of safety pillars; properties of the filling; additional characteristics of technological objects that complicate the driving of workings; sufficiency of human and technical resources; employee specialisation; existing machinery and equipment; opportunities and limitations of the transport scheme of the mine, and work schedule. The paper is presented by means of a dynamic model of mining development, which shows the sequence of mining operations in the mine workings. Besides animation, the tool provides an opportunity to form tabular and graphical reports.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

In South Africa reprocessing used oil into industrial fuel is commercially attractive. The reprocessed product is sold as a substitute for heavy fuel oil that is derived from crude oil (Rose Foundation, 2008). The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the use of petroleum products such as oil, petrol and diesel in Driefontein Gold Mine. The recovery of oil through recycling has costs implications to the mine while the release of petroleum hydrocarbons due to the poor management of the use of petroleum products has potential to cause pollution and negatively affect soil and water. Environmental legislation such as the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act 28, 2002) requires that such negative impacts to the environment be rehabilitated. The rehabilitation cost of pollution caused by petroleum products to the environment increases operational costs in business. Field assessment is conducted to identify the main sources of petroleum product contamination such as leaks in piping, overfills and petroleum spills. The areas that require mitigation would be mapped in the study. Recommendations for mitigation measures will focus on using the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) as well as the best available technology not exceeding excessive cost (BATNEEC). The recovery of oil from the mining industry is generally low and very poor. In this study, the effect of proper management of petroleum products to the mine?s operational costs is investigated and compared to there mediation costs of the impacts caused due to poor management of these products. The study investigates the financial benefit that could be obtained from proper environmental practices and efficient usage of petroleum products in the mining.

Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.

The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

South Africa produces about 400 Kt zircon (ZrSiO4) per annum. This represents about 30 percent of the global demand. However, very little is beneficiated locally and more than 95 percent is exported with little or no value addition. Zircon is a very inert material and needs to undergo high-temperature alkaline melting processes to produce valuable zirconium products. The conversion of zircon to plasma-dissociated zircon (PDZ) produces a chemically reactive species (ZrO2.SiO2) which consist of finely divided submicron monoclinic ZrO2 crystals dispersed in a SiO2 matrix. In this paper, an in-flight, non-transferred arc pilot plasma plant with a capacity of 100 kg/h and which consists of three 150 kW DC plasma torches, is described. The optimization of the plant, which includes the use of different zircon concentrates, the influence of particle size, feed rates, plasma gas, and energy utilization, is discussed.

Electrowinning consumes a substantial amount of electrical energy, and owing to the ever-increasing unit cost of electrical power there is a need to improve current efficiency in the process. This research was carried out to design a continuous quality improvement framework for improving electrowinning current efficiency by applying statistical process control (SPC) on an online industrial copper electrowinning operation. A sequential mixed research methodology was applied and a statistical software package utilized for analysing data. It was concluded that metallurgical short-circuits (hotspots) had the most significant effect on current efficiency. Bringing hotspots under statistical control resulted in a 5.40% improvement in current efficiency, which is equivalent to approximately 74 t of 99.999% pure grade A copper cathode production over a period of 1.5 months.

The effects of welding current, electrode force, and welding time in a resistance spot weld were studied to investigate the effectiveness of welded joints between a thin EN10130: DC04 material and a thicker 817M40 part, through analysis of the microstructural and mechanical properties. All welded specimens were subjected to tensile testing at room temperature (25°C) and sub-zero temperature (–46°C) to test the strength of the welded joints. No full button failure was observed at either room temperature or sub-zero temperature after optimization of the weldng parameters. The fusion zone was observed to consist mainly of martensitic phase, due to rapid quenching, while the HAZ was composed of clusters of martensite in a ferrite and bainite matrix. The base 817M40 metal remained fully ferritic after welding. The hardness was found to increase with increasing welding current. An increase in nugget size, indicating good fusion of the weld, was observed with an increase in the welding current.

Within the technology field generally known as biological heap leaching or percolation leaching, lies a wealth of technological knowhow that is potentially patentable and therefore can form the subject matter of patent applications. An organization often overlooks the potential for generating intellectual capital during its research by dismissing the possibility that what it is working on may be novel and inventive and therefore patentable. The organization labours under the misconception that there is nothing patentable in its work mainly because the novel aspect is overlooked against the general background state of the art or, if identified, is not recognized as having sufficient inventive merit. In the field of biological heap leaching, patents have issued on inventions that extend across a large range of technology, including microbiological inventions-for example a particular strain of microbe used in a heap leach application, electro-mechanical inventions, for example a column simulator that simulates the heap leach environment, and thermodynamic inventions such as methods of generating and maintaining heat in a heap.

Muckpile fragmentation formed by blasting depends on the specific charge factor, the discontinuities in the rock mass, and the rock strength. Determination of the discontinuity characteristics and rock strength is a long and difficult process. These two parameters are directly associated with the rock drilling speed. Therefore, it is the drilling speed of the machine used for the blast-hole, rather than the blasthole discontinuity characteristics and rock strength parameters, that is used in the prediction of muckpile fragmentation before blasting. Primarily, it has been suggested that the muckpile fragmentation values can be correctly determined by establishing correlations between the efficiency of the loader and muck pile fragmentation, since fragmentation is directly correlated with the former parameter. Subsequently, a correlation predicting the drilling speed of the drill machine was developed according to the discontinuity characteristics of the blasting surface and the rock strength. Finally, a correlation was developed predicting muckpile fragmentation according to the specific charge factor and the drilling speed of the drill machine The data was obtained by conducting blasting tests in two different limestone quarries.

Diamondiferous linear beaches in Mining Area No. 1 have been the mainstay of Namdeb?s diamond production for more than 80 years. Most of the onshore beaches have been mined out, but in recent years mining has been extended offshore into the surf zone through a process of beach accretion. A total of 61.6 million carats has been produced from the gravel beaches since their discovery in 1928, and Mining Area No. 1 is considered to have great remaining potential from areas currently submerged under water. To date, the surf zone has remained largely unexplored due to the consistently strong winds, currents, and large waves which make access to this area extremely difficult. This paper describes the processes used in developing a practical methodology for exploration of the surf zone in a domain extending approximately 22 km long in a northwest?southeast direction and 0.3 km wide in a perpendicular direction adjacent to the current Mining Area No 1. The vigorous surf zone poses multiple technical challenges in terms of obtaining geological and diamond information. In order to access the area for sampling, a jack-up walking probe drill platform (PDP) with a 5-inch diameter reverse-circulation drill has been developed to carry out exploration drilling in the dynamic surf zone. The hydraulically driven platform has eight legs, each of which is 18 m long. Four of the legs are in fixed positions on the fore and aft sides of the platform. The other four moveable legs are fitted to sliding frames attached to the port and starboard sides of the platform. The sets of fixed and moveable legs can be raised and lowered by hydraulically powered jacking stations. By alternately lifting and lowering the sets of fixed and moveable legs in conjunction with the frames moving back and forth horizontally, a walking action is performed by the PDP. The platform can walk at a speed of 10?15 m/h, depending on weather and footwall conditions. Optimization of sampling for diamondiferous gravel occurrence in Mining Area No.1 was undertaken through creation of a virtual orebody on which different sample configurations were tested. The input data for the construction of a virtual orebody comprises a set of drilling data, collected from recently accreted areas directly adjacent to the 22 km × 0.3 km target domain. The input drilling data covers only 34% of the domain, and for the purpose of this study, a single realization is deemed to be sufficient. The texture obtained from using only the drilling data to construct a simulation did not make geological sense; hence it was necessary to make use of analog data in order to improve the simulation. The first analog data used consists of the gully patterns found in the metasedimentary Precambrian bedrock footwall. Gullies are, in general, gravel filled and it is fair to assume that gully patterns form a subset of the total gravel occurrence. Total gravel occurrence includes marine terraces (governed by sealevel stands) above bedrock peaks, together with gravel within gullies below bedrock peaks. The second analog ?data? introduced is through the use of ?expert interpretation?. The indicator drilling data is interpreted by expert opinion and the 2-dimensional result is hand-sketched, digitized, and then pixelated. The pixelated data set is then used as input for variogram calculation. This study cannot provide a single definite optimization result as the nature of the data does not permit this. The use of different validation approaches (conditioning data, where available; expert interpretation; and gully pattern data), however, can give a very good indication of how to balance sampling effort with de-risking aspects related to geological continuity. Work undertaken by sampling the simulation will give an assessment of the relative probabilities of determining gravel occurrence in the study area. This study showed that a 50 m × 400 m cross-configuration will be a good initial sample spacing for highlighting areas where gravel may be absent, and further infill drilling may be required. The relative efficiency of a 50 m × 400 m cross off-set sampling configuration has been demonstrated using a trumpet curve versus sampling effort when using kriging as the estimation method. Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

The Kroll process is the traditional method of producing zirconium metal by reduction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium metal. This paper discusses the production of zirconium metal in a plasma reactor. Anhydrous low-hafnium ZrCl4 and Mg metal were fed continuously to a 30 kW non-transfer plasma reactor at a rate of 0.31 kg.h-1. Due to losses in the system the recovery of crude product was 77.5 %. After purification to remove unreacted feed material and MgCl2 by leaching, >98 % pure zirconium metal powder was obtained. The overall recovery of purified Zr was 74 %. The conversion efficiency of the process was 95 %.

There are many potential uses in gold mining for an initially stiff element of backfill that will yield at a predetermined load and maintain that load to beyond a compression of 30%. Such elements could be used as yielding rib pillars, as replacements for more conventional supporting packs, as con- fining bulkheads for mass backfill, as supports to provide lateral constraint, and load-carrying augmentation to overloaded rock pillars. The paper describes a system of reinforced cemented backfill that can be used to provide the above requirements. The necessary characteristics of the reinforcing and the cemented tailings are described together with the method of design to obtain a predetermined stiffness and yield load. The load-compression characteristics of the reinforced tailings elements are described and the effect of changing various of the design parameters is demonstrated.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

Successful management of mining operations depend on the accurate and reliable measurement of performance as a monitoring instrument in a feedback and control loop. However, when changes are being considered, the probable effect of the change on bottom line results requires different measuring techniques incorporating an in depth understanding which can identify hot spots in the operation which exhibit strong sensitivity to change. The CSIR's Division of Mining Technology has therefore been devoting a considerable effort to the establishment of techniques which enable changes to be analysed in terms of their impact on the two key parameters describing mine performance, i.e. profitability and safety. This paper describes these techniques, outlines their application to some example situations and discusses planned enhancements. The first section of the paper addresses the profitability model, and this is followed by a section considering the mine safety model.

There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

ABSTRACT: Geological conditions associated with alpine environments in combination with high overburden in many tunnelling projects lead to squeezing behaviour. The main problems associated with such conditions include large deformations, overstressing of supports, and lack of face stability. In the past during Alpine tunnelling the problem of large displacements incompatible with rockbolt – shotcrete support systems have been solved by leaving gaps in the lining to accommodate excessive deformations. In the late nineties, yielding elements have been developed, which are integrated into the lining. The paper deals with the basic concept, the design and the application of that system, which has been successfully used in several Alpine tunnels. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die geologischen Verhältnisse in den Alpen führen bei großer Überlagerung häufig zu starken Deformationen während des Baues von Tunneln. Die großen Verformungen führen in vielen Fällen zu einer Überbeanspruchung des Ausbaues und Problemen mit der Ortsbruststabilität. Früher ist man dem Problem der Unverträglichkeit des Ausbaues mit den hohen Dehnungen durch Freilassen von Deformationschlitzen im Spritzbeton begegnet. Vor etwa 10 Jahren wurden duktile Stahlelemente entwickelt, welche in die Spritzbetonschale integriert werden. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Konzept, der Planung und der Ausführung. RÉSUMÉ: Les conditions géologiques dans les Alpes conduisent fréquemment lors d'un grand recouvrement à des déformations fortes pendant la construction des tunnels. Les grandes déformations conduisent dans beaucoup de cas à une surtension du revêtement et à des problèmes avec la stabilité de front de taille. On a fait face plus tôt au problème de l'incompatibilité du revêtement avec les extensions élevées par libérer des rainures dans le béton projeté. Il y a environ 10 ans, des éléments sidérurgiques ductiles qui sont intégrés dans le béton projeté ont été développés. La contribution s'occupe de concept, de planification et de mise en oeuvre.
