The U.s. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the utilization and design of mine roof support systems. This report describes methods to evaluate resultant loading on longwall shields, defined as external resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy and base. Four models are considered: two rigid-body models, an elastic model, and a numerical model. The rigid-body models equate measured internal shield forces to unknown external resultant shield forces (loads) through rigid-body analysis of static equilibrium requirements. The elastic model develops a solution to shield mechanics by evaluation of the load-displacement relationship and stiffness characteristics of the support structure. The numerical model is a two-dimensional finite-element representation of a shield structure. Model determination of resultant shield loading is compared to controlled loading of a shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Parameters investigated are shield height, canopy contact configuration, canopy and base horizontal constrainment, and boundary conditions imposed by vertical and horizontal shield displacements. It is concluded that rigid-body models are most applicable to in situ measurement of shield loading. Applications requirements and potential error sources are discussed.

During 1981, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral resource survey of the 6,400 acre (15,800 ha) Lincoln Creek RARE II area (No. 5983) in the Toiyabe National Forest (fig. 1). Samples of outcrops and stream channels contained no significant amounts of economic minerals. A radioactive deposit in a pegmatite dike occurs 1.25 mi (2.02 kin) southeast of the study area, hut similiar deposits have not been discovered within the area boundary. No coal or deposits were found.

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of the Sheep Creek West Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-36A), Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Wilderness Study Area consists of 11,680 acres centered approximately 20 miles south of Grasmere, 10. It contains no mines, claims, or prospects. No mineral resources were identified; however, a geode occurrence within and adjacent to the Wilderness Study Area, and minor amounts of placer gold along Sheep Creek, may be of interest to rorkhounds and recreational gold panners.

The mineral industry consisted primarily of natural gas production and of urea fertilizer, which was manufactured for domestic agriculture. Copper and iron deposits were being developed. Information regarding the mineral industry of Afghanistan was sparse. The Government continued to emphasize the development of mineral resources that could benefit the economy of the U.S.S.R. and repay Soviet grants. The northern half of the country, north of the Hindu Kush mountain range and adjacent to the U.S.S.R., received considerable Soviet aid to develop mineral resources.

The technology of clay and the manufacture of ceramic products therefrom, and also the clay resources of most of the individual States, are already covered by a voluminous literature. The present resume touches these matters only briefly; its purpose is essentially to bring together in small compass certain of the elementary factors affecting the potential commercial value of a clay deposit. In its preparation the author made extensive use of the annual chapters on Clay in Mineral Resources of the United States and in the two annual issues of the Minerals. Yearbook that succeeded them. For careful review and constructive criticism of the manuscript, the author is indebted to Hewitt Wilson. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The term ?clay? includes a great variety of substances that may differ widely in chemical mineralogical and physical properties. No two clays are exactly alike. All of them however, have the prominent characteristic of becoming more or less plastic when wet. Nearly all of the useful clays can be molded into articles, will hold their shape while being dried, and can be converted into a hard, rocklike substance by heat. Clay may, and in fact usually does, consist of a number of minerals among the commonest of which are kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, iron oxides, mica, bauxite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Organic matter is often present. Pure kaolinite, which has the formula A1203. 2 SiO2. 2H2O, is ordinarily, considered to be the parent "clay substance," butt most clays contain other hydrated mixtures of alumina and silica (aluminosilicic acids) along with indefinite amounts of sand and other nonessential minerals3/ Even, this so-called inert matter affects the plasticity, drying shrinkage, ease of drying, and final density, and at high temperatures may react chemically with the clay substance.

This is one of a series of papers describing mining and related subjects affecting mining in western mining districts and mineralized areas. The parts of this paper pertaining to current production, mining and milling methods and practices, and general conditions affecting mining were collected principally during a field survey made in May 1935. Some original data obtained on previous visits to the area are also included. The history, geological background, and past production of the mines and district are largely abstracted from previous publications, for which due credit is given later in the test. The principal districts in the Black Mountains are the Oatman or San Francisco and the Union Pass or Katherine. This range contains the principal producing mines of the State, in which gold is the only important metal. Although the total production of gold is relatively small as compared to other districts where the precious metals are obtained as a by-product in copper min¬ing, the area is one of considerable economic importance to the State.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

This Bureau of Mines report is an expansion and update of Information Circular 8719 and comprises maps and tables listing the name, location, and other pertinent data concerning certain fuel-related projects. The maps show the locations of the planned or proposed facilities. The tables include information on projects involving the proposed or planned development of fuel resources, as well as the development of storage, transportation, and conversion facilities. The report covers the 24 States west of the Mississippi River including Alaska and Hawaii. Of the 808 projects for which information is provided, 219 concern coal mines, 246 concern electric generating plants, and 115 concern uranium mines; Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act coal conversion notices are also included. Because of the dynamic nature of the energy industry, many uncertainties exist and some of the listed projects may never become realities. Also, no attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of the Interior commissioned the development and design of a Simulator for research and testing of mine roof supports used in long-wall mining. The purpose of the Simulator is to reproduce forces and displacements of a section of a mine roof in contact with one or more supports. This report is an account of the design process that resulted in the final configuration of the Simulator presented here. It includes discussions of engineering considerations that led to major changes in important details of the Simulator. These changes, however, did not substantially alter the basic design originally proposed, except for the elimination of certain originally-specified features that were adjudged as insufficiently cost-effective by both the Bureau of Mines and the design agent at an intermediate stage of the design.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel Co.'s Sunnyside No.1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pet.

Talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate having the chemical formula H2Mg3 (SiO8 ) 4 ; it is often called steatite, soapstone or potstorie, and by the trade names talc clay, agalite, asbestine, and verdolite. The term talc may be used to include all forms of the pure mineral, whereas steatite denotes particularly the massive, compact variety, and soapstone the impure, massive form that often contains only 50 per cent of talc. Merrill 1 says: The name soapstone is given to dark-gray and greenish talcose rocks, which are soft enough to be readily cut with a knife, and which have a pronounced soapy or greasy feeling; hence the name. Such rocks are commonly stated in textbooks to be compact forms .of steatite, or talc, but as the writer has elsewhere pointed out, and as shown by the analyses here given, few of them are even approximately pure forms of this mineral, but all contain varying proportions of chlorite, mica, and tremolite, together with perhaps unaltered residuals of pyroxene, granules of iron ore, iron pyrites, quartz, and, in seams and veins, calcite and magnesian carbonates. When pure, talc is soft, having a hardness of 1, but when impure or when it grades into its varieties, the hardness increases to 3 or 4. Talc ranges in color from pure white and silvery white through gray, green, apple green, gray green to dark green, nlso yellow, brown, or reddish when impure. It is rarely, if ever, found in wellformed crystals, but often occurs in foliated plates or in fibrous aggregates. It is commonly compact or massive or in fine granular aggregates. Several analyses of talc from different regions ·are given in Table 1. Talc has several varieties, the most important of which is Rensselaerite. This variety, found in a small area near Gouverneur, St. La.wrence County, N. Y., is a hard, fibrous, -waxlike mineral having the same chemical composition as talc, but lacking its softness and its peculiar greasy feel. Its hardness and its peculiar fibrous form, even when ground, have made its grinding and separation a separate problem. In addition to the varieties of talc and soapstone, the mineral pyrophyllite or agalmatolite, a hydrous silicate of alumina, with the formula H2Al2 (Si08 ), is also mined and sold as talc. It resembles talc in color, feel, luster, and structure, and may be successfully substituted for true talc for most uses. In this paper it will be considered as one of the commercial forms of talc.

This report on methods employed for dehydrating oil-field emulsions, is the second of a series prepared as a result of a study of oil-field emulsions recently completed by the writer. The first paper2 dealt with the factors responsible for the formation of emulsions. A third paper will discuss the physical chemistry involved in the formation and resolution of such emulsions. In the early development of the oil fields of Pennsylvania, no emulsion troubles of any consequence were encountered, nor to any serious extent in the oil fields of other Eastern States: However, with the development of fields west of the Mississippi in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and California, where heavier oils of different characteristics were found, the problem of dealing with cut oil soon became of great importance.

The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.

The techniques are discussed briefly in the following sections. However, detailed information on the techniques is provided in the cited references. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane, if not properly controlled in the underground mine environment, is a safety concern due to the potential risk for an explosion. This is a particular problem during longwall mining, where the high rate and volume of coal extraction can result in the release of large amounts of methane from the mined coalbed and other adjacent gas-bearing strata. The variability and potential hazards of these sometimes unexpectedly high gas flows provide the impetus to develop methods to predict methane emissions into the underground workplace. A forecast of the volume of gas that might be released during coal mining is helpful for designing ventilation systems and for implementing optimum methane drainage strategies to help mitigate expected gas emission problems. A complete assessment of the need for methane drainage prior to mine development generally requires both an empirical and a theoretical approach. If there are active mines in the general area with similar geologic conditions and coal characteristics, a review of gas problems in those mines provides an initial insight into the level of gas emissions to be expected at a new location. In addition, relatively simple methods exist to determine the in situ gas content (volume of gas per unit weight of coal) of the coalbeds in a particular mining area, as well as the gas-in-place (volume of gas in the coalbed(s) within a defined geographic area).

The value of raw nonfuel mineral materials production totaled an estimated $19.7 billion in 1978. The record 1978 value exceeded by 13 percent the 1977 value of $17.5 billion. This raw mineral output was the basis for approximately $200 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Output of both metals and nonmetals increased about $1 billion each, above comparable figures for 1977. Of the 22 metals produced quantitative output of 11 increased and the value of 13 increased. Among the 48 nonmetallic commodities produced, the quantities for 35 increased, and the values for 40 increased.
