The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .

4. Guidelines for Implementing the Emergency Escapeway Standards for Metal and Nonmetal Mines The technical discussion of each escapeway component precedes the specific guidelines for the component. Generally, the technical discussion provides the background and reasoning behind the guidelines. Section 5 is a discussion of general escapeway requirements, including the escape route, fire retardants, warning systems, ventilation systems, escapeway signs and signals, auxiliary transportation and fuel storage. The discussion is followed by a list of guidelines pertaining to the escapeways. Section 6 is a summary of the computer simulation of an escapeway system for Mine "C". A complete documentation of the simulation is included in Appendix A and B. Section 7 covers emergency hoisting requirements and concludes with the guideline, for emergency hoists, their inspection and use. Section 8 is a discussion of refuge chambers and life support and is concluded with guidelines for the application o f this equipment.

The extent of this interest has been evidenced to the Bureau of Mines by numerous requsts for information as to the factors that must be considered if Diesel engines are to be used safely underground.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the analysis and eveluation of the field measurement results of a comprehensive ground control study conducted in a mechanized longwall coal mine in West Virginia. Emphasis is placed on the three basic ground control parameters: ground pressure, ground movement, and geomechanical properties. Specific topics include premining ground pressures, front-abutment pressure in the longwall panel, histories of pillar loading, differential roof-strata movement and bed separation, differential floor strata movement, entry roof-to-floor convergence, in situ moduli of rigidity of coal seam and roof and floor strata, and mechanical properties of coal and coal measures rocks.

The Quartz Hill Molybdenum Project, In Southeast Alaska, was the first mining project to attempt the permitting of a submarine tailings disposal system in the United States, since the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and the Clean Water Act of 1977. Over $20 million was spent by the project developer in baseline data gathering and In funding the preparation of the four Environmental Impact Statements and other environmental documents required at various stages of the project between 1977 and 1988. Because of the timing and a unique set of environmental, legal and regulatory requirements which applied to this project, innovative approaches were developed. This report describes those requirements and the developments, and gives a full historical account of the campaign for permitting submarine tailings disposal at Quartz Hill, until denial of the NPDES permit application by EPA in September 1 990. The extensive studies done for Quartz Hill suggested that under certain conditions the selection of submarine tailings disposal can be the overall environmentally preferred alternative for a mining project. The Quartz Hill story illustrates the complexity of the existing permitting structure and paints out the desirability of rationalization to achieve a more effective system.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Field measurements utilizing a seat pad accelerometer were made on 25 underground coal mining machines in order to quantify the vibration levels experienced by the operators. Those data were combined with information on the statistics of the operating times of those machines in order to compare the operator's vibration exposure to the criteria in ISO 2631, "A Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole Body vibration." The comparison showed that about 30% to 40" of all underground coal mining machine operators can be expected to be exposed to vibration exceeding the fatigue decreased proficiency criterion, whereas only 10 to 15% would be expected to experience vibration exceeding the exposure limit. The primary sources of the exposure are shuttle cars and possibly scoop trams. Detailed exposure statistics are presented and the implications of the results are discussed.

This cost bibliography, covering the period from January through December 1960, is a continuation of the series which began with the publication of Information Circular 7516 in October 1949. It is also the second report in the series to be prepared as a cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers. The cooperative agreement between the two groups provides for the publication of an annual bibliography with the work load involved in the preparation shared equally. The smelting of lead ores has been carried out in southeast Missouri for centuries, and modern smelting practices have generated a variety of waste products. Lead blast furnace slag is one such product, which typically contains 10% zinc, 25% iron and 2% lead. This slag has often been stockpiled on the producing smelter site and accumulations have now reached several million tonnes. It is possible that in the near future these slags will be classified by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as hazardous, and therefore there is considerable interest in possible treatment processes to render the slags non-hazardous by removing the offending metallic elements. To ensure that the overall slag processing costs are kept to a minimum, it is imperative that lead and zinc be recovered in a form suitable for sale or further processing. There are two generic routes for processing blast furnace slags and they involve hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical techniques. With hydrometallurgy, the slags would be leached directly and the metal values recovered from purified leach solution(s) by electrowinning. One problem with processes of this type is that the zinc and lead grades of the slags are low and the iron content is high, and thus the economics of metal production are often not favorable. For pyrometallurgical processing (1), it has been shown that the slags can be fumed to produce an oxide dust containing all the lead and zinc, and representing only a fraction of the weight of the initial slag. The oxide dust may then be processed hydrometallurgical to recover zinc and lead.

An alinement (steering) sensor for continuous mining machines has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. A laser source in the entry projects a beam parallel to the centerline of the entry. The beam is optically shaped to a narrow, vertical fan and illuminates an array of optical sensors bunted on the mini machine. These sensors interpret the location of the beam into meter readings of heading (angle) error and lateral displacement errors. The system, which was tested for 5 months in an operating mine, appears to be fundamentally sound, and with some modification, should be applicable to remote or automatic guidance of continuous miners and other machines.

"DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

To deftne the capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. The splitter investigated was capable of applying combinations of radial and axial loads to rock when placed in a predrilled hole. Experiments conducted with the tool in concrete, limestone, and granite proved it capable of excavating all three materials. Break geometry in these three materials was the same, which encourages the prediction of performance in all rocks. The design of the radial-axial loading splitter's feather components significantly affected the tool's performance. It appears the design of this in-hole component should be tailored for the rock to be excavated.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of December 6, 1974, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1974, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1975 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $20,799,800 for the 1 .06- million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $84,027,500 for the 4.99-MM-tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $32,506,800 to $1 22,983,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $12.87 to $11.64 per ton, assuming a 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

The Automated Breathing Metabolic Simulator (ABMS) is a versatile machine capable of performing almost any physiologically appropriate respiratory simulation. The first ABMS was delivered to the Bureau of Mines by IBM in 1973. Since then efforts have been made to refine the systems and components which make up the ABMS including the Breathing Simulator Module (BSM), Gas Analysis Module (GAM), and Supervisory Controller (SC)-each of which are also capable of stand-alone operation. Since September 1980, Reimers Consultants has been testing and modifying the ABMS and its components in order to improve the equipment and to develop simulation criteria and parameters. Changes have been made to the Phase I Design Plan and Performance Specifications; future improvements based on current experience are recommended; and test results of full scale testing conducted by Reimers Consultants in November 1983 on several types of breathing apparatus are reported and illustrated.

This document describes the direction and progress of the Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Program as of January 31, 1979. It is aimed at focusing the Bureau's role in environmental research supporting oil shale development with respect to the activities of other involved government agencies and private industry. Environmental considerations in oil shale extraction, such as ecological disturbances, health and safety hazards, waste management, and socioeconomic impacts, are discussed along with the type of research known to be planned by organizations to ameliorate these problems.

A continuous mining machine was redesigned for the installation of an integrated illumination system. The illumination system was designed by first calculating the theoretical number of luminaires required to meet the Federal Illumination Standards. Luminaires initially were placed using isointensity diagrams. A darkroom was used for "fine tuning" and demonstrating that the system met the illumination requirements. The luminaire mounts were installed on a machine underground. The performance of this illumination system was monitored in the working environment of an operating coal mine. Design changes were made as necessary during this evaluation period to improve the system.

This report summarizes the activities performed and the results achieved during a two-phased investigation of the technical and economic feasibility of disposing of coal mine refuse underground in active mines, Three coal regions in the United States that are most severely affected by coal refuse disposal problems are identified: southwestern Pennsylvania, southern West Virginia, southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. For each region, a conceptual mine model is presented that describes the geologic conditions, mining methods, and environmental circumstances typical of that region. The model mine that was prepared for the Kanawha Region in Southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky was selected as the basis for developing alternative conceptual designs of underground disposal systems in the second phase of this investigation. Procedures used in selecting the regions and in modeling typical mines are described in Part I of the report. Part II of the report describes existing methods for stowing refuse underground, presents three alternative conceptual designs of stowing system that would be appropriate for the model mine postulated in the first phase of the study, discusses technical characteristics and environmental effects relative to the various systems, and evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of the three alternative disposal system designs. Comparisons costs among systems and with costs or surface disposal are presented.

This report (Independent Functional Safety Assessment Guidance 7.0) is the last in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and after-market suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. Disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas is a continually increasing problem. The necessity for studying this problem has been realized more generally in recent years, and in August 1934 an agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the United States Bureau of Mines to conduct a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal. To date one paper in the technical press4/ and three reports5/6/ have been published in which are given results of studies carried on under this cooperative agreement. In the Mid-Continent fields, the methods used most generally for handling oil-field brines are: (1) Impounding in evaporation ponds; (2) controlled diversion into surface streams; and (3) injection into subsurface formations through wells assigned for this purpose. Various States recognize one or more of the methods as legally authorized procedure. Impounding brine in ponds and solar evaporation have proved inadequate as a general rule, owing, usually, to the porous nature of the soil, the low rate of evaporation, or both. Diversion, of
