Improve the safety, reliability and overall effectiveness of mine stench warning systems and to provide a means of remote control stench injector operation. Approach Industrial gas odorants were analyzed for their suitability for use in mine stench warning systems. A prototype stench injector capable of precise flowrate control was designed, fabricated, and tested using the odorant chosen as having the most favorable properties. Based on the results of the field tests, a second generation injector was developed. The second generation unit features optional remote control operation, and in addition, is simpler to refill and is less expensive than the original injector. A complete second generation system, consisting of two manually operated injectors and one remote controlled injector was in-mine tested through actual mine fire drills. The new MSHA diesel rules have stone mine operators looking hard at pos¬sible upgrades to their ventilation systems. There are existing methods to reduce diesel engine emissions (MSHA, 2001)(Head, 2001b),but many operators will decide that a ventilation upgrade is necessary is well. NIOSH hay several stone mine ventilation projects underway, but in the meantime a good information resource is the work done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 70's and 80's on ventilation for oil shale mines. The Bureau conducted this research because oil shale mines were projected to be gassy and would, therefore, require a lot of ventilation air. The focus of this oil shale work was on the use of jet tans for lace area ventilation, and on stoppings that would he low Lost and leak-tight. The work also considered changes in mine design to reduce the number and size of stoppings. The findings are still applica¬ble to stone mines.

To assist coal mine operators and regulatory agencies in selecting the most appropriate method to treat coal mine drainage utilizing expert system computer technology. The software package is called the Coal Mine Drainage Treatment PRO. Approach Experts in the field of coal mine drainage treatment were interviewed to determine their methods of assessing mine drainage treatment problems and their rationale for selecting a treatment protocol. These diagnostic, selection, and design criteria were codified in an interactive set of computer programs. Expert systems permit the user to input specific site data and receive treatment advice customized to the user's site and treatment objectives. How It Works The Coal Mine Drainage Treatment PRO package developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) consists of four programs or modules: (1) a control module, (2) a mine drainage treatment tutorial module, (3) a treatment advice module, and (4) a reference module (figure 1). The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. Accidents occur when least expected, from sources that we rarely anticipate and with outcomes that can vary greatly. Anyone who has ever been involved in an automobile accident knows, the transition from driving comfortably and safely down a highway to being involved in a potentially life-threatening situation can occur in a heartbeat. Accidents on the job are no different. The mining industry has a relatively small number of electrical injuries, compared to industries such as construction or agriculture, due to the small total employment in mining. Mining does, however, have one of the highest occupational electrocution rates of any U.S. industry, at 2.8 for every 100,000 workers per year. This is approximately four times the average for all industries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) shows that 75 electrical fatalities occurred in the mining industry between 1990 and 1999. Of these, at least 17% involved high-reaching mobile equipment that contacted overhead power lines.

A preliminary investigation has recently been made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine whether or not the ordinary mine- type telephone is entirely safe in gaseous atmospheres . Two well known makes of mine- type phones were purchased for this investigation . It is not conceivable that the current necessary for talking over telephones could ignite gas . However , such phones are provided with efficient magnetos , and it was believed that danger might result from the ringing of the magneto . Again , while this type of phone has been designed to have a certain measure of dust and moisture tightness , evidently it has not been designed as an explosion- proof device . either with regard to cover joints and fastenings or strength of castings . Therefore , the problem was simplified . First it was assumed that owing to the construction of the telephones the gas would penetrate into their interior , and the question was to ascertain whether or not the gas would be ignited from the operation of the magneto .

The inplace cyanidation leaching of gold from placer deposits is a potential method for treating gravels too deeply buried and too low in gold content to be processed economically by conventional dredging methods. Laboratory experiments were made to evaluate those placer cyanidation factors adaptable to small-scale studies. The variables investigated included gold particle size and location in sand beds, cyanide solution flow rate, and cyanide solution strength as factors affecting gold solubility rates. The solution flow rate, in turn, was influenced by variables such as bed slope, solution head pressure, and sand size, and the effects of these factors were studied. Free gold, minus 150-mesh and finer in size, is rapidly dissolved by dilute cyanide solutions from mixtures of gold and silica sand prepared to simulate placer deposits. About 94 percent of minus 325-mesh free gold was extracted in 5 hours from silica sand mixtures, and 94 percent extraction of minus 150-mesh gold was obtained in 21 hours with 0.1 percent NaCN solutions. Moving solutions were almost twice as effective in leaching free gold from silica sand mixtures than stagnant solutions.

An emergency is defined as an unforeseen combination of circumstances that calls for immediate action. When applied to a coal mine, an emergency may call for prompt removal of the men to the surface through travelways other than the haulageway or intake airways, which are generally contaminated with irrespirable air as a result of an explosion or fire. Therefore, maintenance of adequate and travelable escapeways from all working areas of a mine is vitally important insurance against disaster. Several mine disasters could have been avoided if well-defined escape routes had been provided and made known to all mine employees. Such occurrences, unnecessary as they generally are, unfairly indict the industry when only a small segment thereof is involved. As a result of a rather recent disaster, which might not have happened if good escape routes had been provided, the Bureau of Mines decided to delve into the escape procedure to determine (1) what is being done in the industry and (2) what might be done at reasonable cost.

Abstract—Overhead electric power lines present a serious electrocution hazard to personnel in a variety of industries. Overhead lines, typically uninsulated conductors supported on towers or poles, are the most common means of electric power transmission and distribution, and are exposed to contact by mobile equipment such as cranes and trucks. Equipment contacting energized overhead lines becomes elevated to a high voltage, and simultaneous contact by personnel of the “hot” frame and ground can cause serious electrical shock and burns. Industries where risk of these accidents is greatest include construction, mining, agriculture, and communications/public utilities. An estimated 2300 accidental overhead line contacts occur each year in the U.S. This paper describes a practical low-cost concept to detect actual contact of mobile equipment with a high-voltage line and provide a warning. Accident statistics indicate that more than half of the fatalities could be prevented by such a device. The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation of copper electrowinning from electrolytes produced by solvent extraction. The purpose of the research was to gain a better understanding of the fundamental relationship between copper electrowinning conditions, anode corrosion, and cathode purity. Processing variables were evaluated in a cyclic semicontinuous system in which the depleted electrolyte was used to strip copper from loaded organic extractant. For the production of high quality copper cathodes, the electrolyte was dosed with cobalt and stripped of organic solvent extraction reagent. An optimum cobalt addition of 60 ppm, and removal of the entrained extractant with activated carbon provided the best conditions for electrowinning copper containing the least amount of lead and controlling anode corrosion. As little as 13 ppm of the entrained organic extractant, LIX 64-N, significantly accelerated anode corro-sion. However, the addition of 1,000 ppm of organic diluent kerosine did not affect anode corrosion. After cobalt dosing and removing the entrained extractant, cathodes containing less than 2 ppm lead were consistently electrowon at widely varied current densities, electrolyte copper and acid concentrations, and temperatures. Dosing of the electrolyte with selected impurities including magnesium, aluminum, manganese, and iron did not affect the cathode purity. However, 0.05 giL of chloride ions markedly increased anode corrosion and the sub-sequent transfer of lead to the cathode copper.

The objective is to provide effective training on refuge chambers for underground coal miners. This training will increase knowledge about how to teach miners to operate, transport, and inspect a refuge chamber; what to expect psychologically and physiologically inside a refuge chamber; and how to decide when to use a refuge chamber. Background During 2006?2007, several disasters occurred at U.S. underground coal mines, resulting in 28 fatalities. These disasters led to new approaches to mine safety and health, as well as new federal regulations. One new technology mandated by federal legislation is the refuge chamber. Refuge chambers are movable shelters that are either made of steel or inflate from a steel skid as a tent. They can potentially save the lives of miners during an underground mine emergency by providing breathable air, food, water, and a safe environment for up to 96 hours. Because the refuge chamber is a new technology, recommendations, information, and training products are greatly needed.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most pervasive health problems in the mining industry, despite over 25 years of regulation. One of the loudest pieces of equipment used in underground mining is the continuous mining machine. Noise sample data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration indicate that 42% of noise overexposures between 2000 and 2005 involved continuous mining machine operators. Previously conducted field and laboratory tests have determined that the continuous mining machine conveyor system is a dominant noise source. Loud impacts occur as the conveyor chain flight bars, used to move the mined aggregate, traverse their path from the top to the underside of the conveyor deck. Various noise control treatments have been applied to abate noise caused by the conveyor system. A durable polyurethane coating has been developed for the conveyor flight bars, resulting in a time-weighted average reduction of 3 dB(A) for an eight-hour work shift. In an attempt to further reduce continuous mining machine operator overexposures, a similar urethane coating has been applied to the tail roller component of the conveyor system. Laboratory results showed a 2 dB(A) reduction in sound power levels, but the component failed during underground durability testing. An outer steel sleeve has been added to the urethane coating of the tail roller to enhance wear resistance during mining. The urethane jacketed tail roller is the latest effort, combined with previous noise treatments, to bring the continuous mining machine into compliance with federal noise regulations.

In response to the continuing problem of noise induced hearing loss NIHL among mine workers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH has conducted numerous noise surveys in coal preparation plants. The research, consisting of worker dose monitoring, task observations, and equipment noise profiling, was completed in eight separate preparation plants. Worker dose monitoring was conducted for three shifts in most cases. Workers experiencing higher than allowable doses were task-observed for one full shift to correlate dose to noise source(s). Finally, noise levels on all floors, and in lunchrooms and control rooms, were characterized. Results indicate that only workers who routinely spend a significant portion of their shift in the plants (away from the control rooms) are susceptible to overexposure from noise. Certain pieces of equipment (screens, centrifuges, sieve bends) are the loudest primary noise sources responsible for the worker noise exposures.

Twelve healthy, experienced underground cool miners performed lifting capacity tests in stooped and kneeling postures using a modified psychophysical procedure. Subjects adjusted weight in a lifting box to the maximum they could handle without undue fatigue in an asymmetric lifting task. Lifting periods were 20 min in duration and the frequency was 10 lifts/min. Tests were performed under a 48-in. roof that restricted the subject&apos;s posture. Psychophysical. physiological, and biomechanical dependent measures included the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), heart rate (HR), rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation volume rate (VF), respiratory exchange ratio (R), and integrated electromyography (EMG) of eight trunk muscles. Results indicated that the MAWL was significantly lower when kneeling than when stooped (p < 0.05), Furthermore, metabolic demands were greater in terms of HR (p < 0.005) mid VO2 (p < 0.05) when kneeling. Left and tight erectores spinae muscles exhibited increased EMG activity- in the kneeling posture (p < 0.001). It was concluded that psychophysical lifting capacity is decreased, while the metabolic stress and internal load on the spine are increased, in the kneeling posture. Results of this Bureau of Mines study indicate that it may be advisable to reduce the weight of materials that are handled repetitively in the kneeling posture.

The British Solomon Islands Protectorate continued developmental work on bauxite deposits on the Islands of Rennell and Vaghena. A feasibility study was completed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., and Pacific Aluminum Ltd. (a subsidiary of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd,), and negotiations with the Government were in progress. The Government will receive a 25% share if the project is realized. It was estimated that the Islands contain 60 million tons of bauxite with an alumina content of 45% to 50%.

A constitutive model for rock interfaces based on the principles of static fatigue is proposed. The model is applicable to weak rock or joints with cohesion. Friction and dilation are decreased as plastic work increases. At equilibrium, the creep time increases by one time-step interval, and interface cohesion at each node decreases according to a power function. A constant-load, direct-shear simulation showed that the model is cap- able of mimicking constant-rate and tertiary creep and predicting failure. Tests on core from a coal mine showed constant-rate and, sometimes, tertiary creep, but also weak transitory creep. The cohesion deterioration function may need modification to simulate primary-phase creep. If model parameters are known for a site, the model can predict the onset of tertiary creep and failure. Such predictions can help engineers make better entry design and support decisions, which will reduce the likelihood of roof falls and increase safety for underground miners.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. The research has demonstrated that the ventilation of large-opening mines improves significantly by including ventilation requirements in the mine planning process and implementing somepractical techniques during mining. Planning the location of long pillars to reduce the number of crosscuts between intake airways and return airways, positioning auxiliary fans in their proper locations, and establishing ventilation stoppings with minimal leakage all significantly improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Mine operators that adopt these techniques in the mine ventilation plan will reduce mineworkers’ exposure to airborne contaminants.

Fire is still a scourge of the mining industry, although many precautionary measures have been and are being taken to reduce the incidence of fires and to combat them. Generally, the success of fire extinguishment is directly proportional to the speed of attack, and the speed of attack in turn is dependent upon the availability of materials and trained personnel. Preparations for firefighting are frequently neglected because they are considered emergency needs and do not contribute directly to coal production. Fire incites panic--a fact often overlooked--but such chaos can be minimized by training people in the use of equipment and procedures. Heat, smoke, and fumes hamper the approach to a fire; however, a relatively new technique of attacking fires with high-expansion foam may well contribute greatly to firefighting. The foam is transported to a fire and used at a considerable distance, thus permitting the firefighters to work more safely.
