The U.S. Bureau of Mimes evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pct, depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O, but it increased CO, and NO,. The increase in NO,, of about 12 pct, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.

The Cactus Springs Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) study area (No. A5188) comprises 12,800 net acres (5,180 ha) in San Bernardino National Forest in west central Riverside County, California, about 20 air miles (32 km) southeast of Palm Springs. Mineral investigations are made by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on National Forest lands identified as Further Planning Areas in the RARE II program. The Bureau of Mines reviewed literature, mining claim records, and production files; examined the study area; and mapped and sampled mineral properties where appropriate.

About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. Bureau of Mines, E. A. Holbrook and W. W. Odell; Illinois Gas Association, C. W. Bradley and R. B. Harper; University of Illinois, Dean C. R. Richards, Prof. S. W. Parr, and Prof. H. H. The Washington National Cathedral is one of the largest masonry structures in the USA, and like many of its European Gothic counterparts, it required nearly a century to construct. The design was altered during this period, resulting in greater loadings than were originally anticipated on the soil beneath the foundation. When signs of continuing differential settlement were observed in the early 1990's, the Cathedral approached the US Bureau of Mines (now the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)) for assistance in monitoring the movements of the massive towers and walls. An array of dual-axis tiltmeters was installed about 40m above ground level to measure wall and tower inclination, with the data sent over a dedicated phone line to the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory for processing. Mechanical gages and string-potentiometers are also being used to measure motion across cracks and joints, and differential pier settlement is being monitored with optical-level surveying. Data have now been collected for almost 7 years, and they show a long-term settlement trend masked by dramatic diurnal and seasonal thermal movements. The paper discusses the major findings of the study, implications for the future of the Cathedral, and conclusions regarding the use of geotechnical monitoring at major national monuments.

A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a joint survey to determine the range of coal particle sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways of US coal mines. The last comprehensive survey of this type was performed in the 1920s. The size of the coal dust is relevant to the amount of rock dust required to inert the coal dust, with more rock dust needed to inert finer sizes of coal dust. Dust samples were collected by MSHA inspectors from several mines in each of MSHA's 10 bituminous Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Samples were normally collected in several intakes at each mine. The laboratory analysis procedures included acid leaching of the sample to remove the limestone rock dust, sonic sieving to determine the dust size, and low-temperature ashing of the sieved fractions to correct for any remaining incombustible matter. The results indicate that particle sizes of mine coal dust in intake airways are finer than those measured in the 1920s. This finer size coal dust in intake airways would require more incombustible matter to be effectively inerted than the 65% incombustible specified in current regulations.

Computer modeling of rock flow in ore passes is being investigated and compared using MSC Soft-ware’s Working Model 2D1 (WM2D) and Itasca Corp.’s Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions (PFC2D). This work is being carried out by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to determine the usefulness of computer modeling to improve ore pass design. The types of tests included pendulum tests to validate WM2D simulations and simulated single-rock drop tests in both WM2D and PFC2D to understand their contact models. Simulated rock impacts at the ore pass chute and the use of inclined ore passes and doglegs were investigated in both programs. A PFC2D simulation showed that dynamic loads at the chute gate were reduced significantly when a dogleg transition was used, and simulations in which the ore pass was inclined showed significant reductions in chute impact loads compared to simulations of a vertical ore pass. A released hang-up was simulated using PFC2D.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations for the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest.

In this report estimates are presented of the impact of the passage of five recently proposed "acid rain" bills on electric utility costs for coal-burning utilities servicing the domestic aluminum smelting industry, and on the costs of production for affected aluminum smelters. As aluminum smelting is an energy-intensive industry, domestic increases in electricity prices could affect the industry's competitiveness. Energy costs in U.S. aluminum smelting are compared to aluminum smelting energy costs in the rest-of-the-world. Governmental policies affecting these energy costs are discussed.

As part of a respirable mine-dust research program at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, spark-source mass spectrometry has been used for the semiquantitative determination of trace elements (200 ppm weight or less) in raw coals. In addition, several minor and major elements have been determined using this technique. Sixty-four elements ranging in concentration from 0.01 to 41,000 ppm weight were determined in one anthracite, two mvb, four lvb, and six hvab raw coal samples. The samples represented 10 coal seams located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Utah, and Colorado.

Colorado coal-mine fatalities, which have gradually decreased since 1914, have shown a marked decline since 1924. Data on coal-mine fatalities in Colorado published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines5 indicate that the deaths per thousand 300-day workers have decreased from 9.13 in 114 to 6.14 in 1926, and that the deaths per million tons produced have decreased from 9.18 in 1914 to 4.98 in 1926. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

A study of the combustion emission products of rigid ventilation ducting was completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The ducting was composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Four properties of the ducting were evaluated: (1) propensity to ignite, (2) smoke characteristics, (3) gas emissions, and (4) heat release. Particle sizes, obscuration, optical densities, and production constants for gas and smoke were also calculated. These results provide comprehensive data about the emission products, detectability, and relative hazards of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting and other mine combustibles under realistic fire conditions.

In conjunction with its research program on separation, recovery, and recycling of metal, mineral, and energy-based materials in urban refuse, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing means to reuse and recycle plastics discarded in raw municipal waste. Experimental work on plastic waste from a community collection has produced some guidelines for systematic methods of processing, including air classification, cleaning, separation, and use or disposal. Sink-float methods are a practical means of separation into types. Methods for final disposition of the plastic waste include refabrication, thermal decomposition, and incineration.

GaAs has advanced from a laboratory curiosity to a material with important "high-tech applications within only the last few years, and although protected North American gallium supplies are currently considered adequate, consumption could grow to the point that this assessment would need reevaluation.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 165 natural gas samples from 21 States and 1 foreign country. Of the total samples, 155 were collected during calendar year 1988. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1988. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.
