The deposit was discovered during systematic reconstruction of the geological history of glacial overburden, which averages 6 m in thickness over 80% of Sweden, by geochemical sampling and searching for small grains of eroded bedrock. The gold is mainly concentrated in and around high-grade quartz veins within a broad shear zone, though the correlation coefficient between quartz and gold in samples is not significant. Production from two pits, now connected, in the Central and Eastern orebodies has increased steadily from 1 238 kg Au in 1989 to 2 120 kg in 1994, the highest in Europe. The mine has adapted and improved its mining methods to achieve significant productivity increases and cost reductions. Most of the improvements have been achieved through a better understanding of the controls on mineralisation and of the implications of those controls for selective mining. Geostatistics has played an important role in the quantification of grade variability and gold occurrence. Better blasting and loading techniques have improved selectivity, grade control has been enhanced by a grade-control drilling programme, and significant improvements in mineral processing have been made

The Neves-Corvo copper-tin mine is the highest-grade large-tonnage copper operation in the world and is now arguably the most significant producing base-metal mine in Europe, rating in the top ten world producers of both copper and tin. A description is given of the initial exploration work and the development of the project from the orebody discovery in the Iberian Pyrite Belt of southern Portugal in 1977 to full operating capacity in 1990. The chronological account includes discussion of the main organisational, financial, technical and environmental decisions and of the various difficulties encountered, and the challenges of the future are identified. An artificial standard material has been developed and used to examine the robustness of some of the procedures for correcting stereological bias. Different mineral liberation distributions were constructed from the standard material. The particles were mounted, sectioned and the sectioning data measured with an electron microscope interfaced to an image analyser. Four correction procedures were used and the corrected and true liberation distributions compared. It was found that the large-sections correction provided a simple, uncorrupted correction. Hill's fast approximation performed well except in cases of narrow liberation distributions; the sectioning data appeared to support the assumption that the locked section and locked particle distributions are identical. Barbery's correction performed well in most cases, having difficulty only with the very irregular liberation distribution. The PARGEN correction was able to provide a good estimate of the true amount of free material, but had difficulty in predicting the locked particle distribution

The optimal maintenance and control of the air flow and pressure distribution in a mine network are achieved by the correct positioning of the mine fans and regulators within the mine ventilation circuit. The principal considerations are the location of the main and underground fans or regulators and the attendant control of mine leakage. Air flow control is achieved by either passive or active regulation. Passive regulation adds resistance, usually in the form of a regulating door. Active regulation adds pressure sources in the form of underground booster fans. Ventilation engineers are increasingly turning to analytical tools to assist them in the design and operation of ventilation systems. The financing of large mining projects in developing countries is often achieved, at least in part, by limited-recourse financing methods. Financing agreements are affected by the basic accord that is struck between the host government and the sponsors of the project. It is concluded that governments and project sponsors should take into account the requirements of lenders when structuring such mineral development agreements to maximise the potential for attracting project financing. Lenders are likely to be most interested in aspects such as fiscal arrangements, calculation of taxable income and general accounting rules, royalties, transferability of payments/dividends overseas, corporate structure and control, staged development, financing, loan support and state guarantees/approvals, political risk, provisions for default, product marketing, settlement of disputes and environmental issues

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: The database: a pre-requisite for large-scale use of AI in mining). Artificial intelligence is a term which has been widely applied to different techniques including rule-based systems using inductive and deductive logic algorithms, neural networks, learning systems and genetic algorithms. In principle it should be applied to adaptive statistical techniques. Some of these applications have been coded in languages which are specifically suited to the novel requirements of AI but are not easy to integrate with more traditional computing methods. Efforts have been made to bridge the gaps, particularly with database management systems and such efforts at integration should provide the key to future success in the application of AI. A field which has been termed "knowledge engineering" cannot be credible as such if it fails to provide easy access to raw materials of "knowledge" i.e. the data residing in databases. In the mining industry there are a number of significant areas in which AI could usefully be applied throughout the industry, but its advance is slow because of the lack or inefficiency of such database links. Current development of object-oriented database systems for geology and mining holds out hope for such integration in the foreseeable future

Extensions to a correctional institution at Wabash Valley, Indiana, required development over abandoned coal-mine workings, at 90 m depth, where subsidence was possible at surface. Backfilling of the flooded mine in critical areas was determined to be the most cost-effective method of limiting the risk of damage to the buildings. Containment grout was first placed in selected entries and cross-cuts of each mine area; the remaining volume was then filled with a readily flowing infill grout. Where a high proportion of an area was taken up by rubble, calcium lignosulphonate was used as a retarder and plasticiser to increase penetration. Grout movement was monitored from adjacent boreholes with an electrical resistivity probe during grouting, while after the work was finished core samples were obtained from verification holes drilled in the backfilled areas

The Aredor mine employs conventional dragline methods to exploit alluvial diamond deposits. Production began in 1984 with the policy of mining in the terrraces during the wet season and in the river flats during the dry season. Early production failed to meet predicted grades. A major geological programme to re-evaluate existing reserves was undertaken. This resulted in considerable increases in reserves in the river flats. Many of the reserve blocks included flats on both banks of the Baoule river. Methods of access into the river flats, normally flooded in the wet season, were developed to allow mining throughout the year. River diversions have been the main method used to provide access into the reserve blocks and, most importantly, to remove the risk of flooding. Aredor has carried out six main river diversions with a total length of 12 km. The diversions allowed production planning to be made on the basis of the economic evaluation of the reserve blocks, without undue regard to natural ground conditions or to seasonal factors. The Manning equation was used for the calculation of channel dimensions and gave satisfactory results. The practical aspects of the diversion preparations and flooding prevention are described

A method is proposed for the continuous calulation of a rock mass in real time while tunnelling with a TBM. Rock properties are investigated through models of the fracture stress under the disc cutters, the quasi-shear stress between the disc cutters and the specific energy of cutting under the disc cutters. Comparison of theoretical and monitored data of cutting specific energy can be used to determine theoretically the prevailing shape and size of the bulk debris. The shape and size of the chips from a given rock vary with the boring parameters. Introducing shape and volume corrections into the models of the evaluated stresses suppresses the influence of the boring regime and allows the rock properties to become dominant

Rittinger's and Bond's descriptions of rock crushing relate the energy input required to fracture rock and the surface energy required to form new fractures to the change in specific surface area of feed and product during comminution. The potential applicability of this approach to blasting is illustrated, using the results of data from bench blasting tests on Pinal schists and production blasting of Carboniferous limestones. The approach contributes to understanding of the mechanisms involved in blasting and to the design of test blasts. A modified form is presented of the relationship between blasting energy, specific surface area of the muckpile and a rock energy constant related to the discontinuity structure of the rock. The modified equation fits observed data and offers a simple basis for further experiments

Large, unpredicted ground movements resulting from open cast or underground mining present risks to the safety and economy of extractive industries. As large, sudden failures are usually preceded by small displacements at a much slower rate, the detection and monitoring of these minor changes to the ground surface provides a means of assessing the risks. It is recommended that a visual approach is often preferable to surveying or fixed instrumental measurements. An optical system has been devised, incorporating a 35 mm camera, which allows an immediate comparison on site between a colour transparency taken on a previous inspection and the scene it represents. The observer fuses the transparency stereoscopically with the directly viewed scene. The impression is close to that of normal vision except that differences in detail which have occurred since the transparency was taken are immediately obvious, enabling a qualitative assessment of changes to be made on site. If repeat photography is required it can be taken with exactly the same alignment and coverage. The two images are then available for office analysis using simple micro-photogrammetry

Paper presented at Geofluids '93, held in Torquay, UK, 4-7 May 1993. The tin field consists of a fragment of Lower Proterozoic volcanosedimentary rocks surrounded by granitoids. Almost all the significant deposits are hosted by arkoses and are classified as replacement and space-filling types, with particular styles of mineralisation dominating at different mines. Petrological and geochemical investigation of borehole cores from four centres indicated the presence of a stratified zone 500-600 m thick and continuous over at least 20 km along strike, consisting of pervasively altered clastic arenitic sediments. The alteration is zoned into a grey-green sodic albitised footwall, an 80 m thick sericitised-tourmalinised sulphidic tin zone and a red haematitic potassic hanging-wall. The zoning and the localisation of three cassiterite phases are consistent with the tectonic history and with multiple pulses of stanniferous hydrothermal fluids derived from late differentiates of the granites over a prolonged period. Areas of high fracture density acted as conduits for the fluids, whose initially rapid ascent was retarded by decreasing pressure contrast, limited development of fracturing and/or impermeable shaly arkose to cause lateral spreading and pervasive alteration over a broad, stratified front. Lateral overlapping of local fronts at the various centres suggests a continuous zone, while the many petrological and geochemical similarities point to a shared fluid composition
