As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. "In this study, a low-grade ferruginous low-grade chromite ore was subjected to reduction roasting by using conventional heating as well as microwave heating. Sukinda chromite ore deposit contains majorly iron-bearing minerals as gangue phase. The magnetic susceptibility of these minerals enhances effectively after reduction roasting. Alteration of crystalline structure and magnetic property of these metals enables separation of low-grade ore by using magnetic separation. Conventional roasting studies by varying the temperature, time of reduction and reductant dosage were changed for low-grade ferruginous chromite ore. Similarly, microwave power, retention/exposure time and reductant dosage varied for reduction roasting studies under microwave environment. It is found that low-grade ferruginous chromite ore can be upgraded by reduction roasting and 61.2% Cr2O3 was recovered with a chromium-to-iron ratio of 1.93 from feed chromium-to-iron ratio of 1. Microwave reduction roasting studies resulted in upgradation of chromium-to-iron ratio to 1.73 with a recovery of 21% Cr2O3.INTRODUCTION The chromite ore occurs as a spinel containing oxides of chromium, iron, magnesium and aluminium. Most of the Indian chromite deposits are of ferruginous (rich in iron content) which indicates the abundance of ferruginous gangue minerals along with chromite. The primary use of chromite ore is towards the production of ferrochrome alloys. Chromite ores with less than 40% Cr2O3 and the chromium-to-iron ratio (Cr-to-Fe ratio) <1.8 is considered to be unsuitable for the smelting process (Tripathy et al. 2012, Tripathy et al. 2012a). A considerable amount of low-grade chromite ore and overburden excavated during chromite mining is getting accumulated every year, causing a threat to the environment. Its disposal poses a significant challenge and, hence, the beneficiation of low-grade chromite ore and its utilisation has been attracting a lot of attention. Different physical method of beneficiation methods is generally employed for the improvement of the Cr-to-Fe ratio (Tripathy et al. 2012, Murthy et al. 2011, Tripathy et al. 2012a, Tripathy et al. 2013, Tripathy et al. 2016, Tripathy et al. 2017, Tripathy et al. 2017a). It is observed that the enrichment of the chromite ore is carried out by using gravity and in some places by magnetic separation. However, the enrichment of Cr-to-Fe ratio from low-grade ferruginous chromite ore is difficult by using the above-mentioned beneficiation methods due to the presence of near gravity and near-magnetic susceptibility minerals along with chromite. However, an alternative beneficiation method is needed to explore for the beneficiation of such mineral deposits. Reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation is an alternative option for the separation of these types of ores which is widely reported for the iron and manganese ore (Li, et al., 2010; Chun, et al., 2014, Rath et al., 2018). These processes are majorly focussed on differentiating the magnetic susceptibility between minerals and subsequent separation by using magnetic field. The main advantage of such method is dry process option along with the pre-processed product for the costly smelting process. Also, the roasting of minerals in a microwave environment is also an active research topic in the recent time. So, the amenability of the separation feature of the roasting process by using conventional heating as well as microwave heating can be can be studied for the low grade ferruginous chromite ores."

"The purpose of this research was aimed at increasing recovery of metals from rebellious sulfide polymetallic ores of nonferrous and rare metal deposits. The ores under consideration have common processing features, including textural and structural complex characteristics, irregularity of impregnation and wide range of grain size, up to nanoparticle size, variable complex mineral composition, low content of precious metals etc. This all predetermines the need for advanced processing schemes with deep selective liberation and separation of minerals with intercycle release into rough concentrate and fractional products with the use of multi-stage cycles of individual dressing, based on an optimum combination of various integrated beneficiation and hydrometallurgical processes. The application of existing standard processes does not enable the production of high-grade selective concentrates without reducing the recovery rate due to incomplete separation of fine mineral intergrowths and overgrinding of brittle ore and rock minerals.The combined beneficiation processes for such type of resources, aimed at increasing recovery of nonferrous, rare, and precious metals are based on flotation methods in combination with gravity concentration to produce rich rough collective or selective concentrates, comprising readily floatable mineral fractions. At the same time, hardly recoverable and non-separable mineral associations are released into separate concentrated products for following dressing by individual processes. The proposed combined process provides for successive selective liberation of minerals with release of rich readily recoverable mineral fractions at the preparation and ore beneficiation stages. The hardly recoverable mineral associations shall be released in subsequent operations with the use of dressing, based on a combination of beneficiation and pyro- and hydrometallurgical methods."

Lab-scale flotation of copper and cobalt oxidized ore from the Luiswishi deposit in the Katanga province (DRC) has been done focusing on the influence of the degree of process water recycling on metals recovery. Results have shown that at 20 % recycling rate, the recovery of copper and cobalt in the cleaner stage have been respectively reduced to 23 % and 45 % in comparison to 53 % Cu and 63 % Co if process water has not been recycled. At 10 % recycling rate however, the system could still tolerate the effect from recycling, since Cu and Co recovery has remained respectively at acceptable levels of 52 % and 60 %. In order to explain the reasons for the observed worsening of flotation results if process water was recycled at rate higher than 20 %, electrochemical investigation of the pulp has been performed. It has been established that the chemical compounds formed in the pulp when process water was recycled, do influence the sulphidization of malachite and heterogenite and impact further collector adsorption. To confirm these assumptions, the effect from thiosulphate ions presence during the sulphidization of high purity malachite has been studied. It has been found, that thiosulphate ions depending on their concentration in water induce variations in pulp properties such as DO content, pH, Es and contribute to formation of undesirable chemical compounds on mineral surface as identified by DRIFT spectroscopy.

"Flotation of arseno bearing minerals from their copper ore has been an interest due to the increasing awareness on protecting the environment by minimizing the possibility of exposed arsenic compound. Some approaches have been proposed, but the mechanisms of separations have not yet fully understood. In this study, oxidation using oxygen was applied. Instead of the complex copper ore flotation results, pure single mineral of tennantite and chalcopyrite foatability was conducted using Hallimond tube. Resembled with the flotation results of copper concentrate containing tennantite, the separation possessed the best result at alkaline condition (pH 11) at where the arsenic content was reduced from 3300 ppm to 1800 ppm. In order to be able to understand the mechanism of the separation atomic force microscope (AFM) was utilized. AFM images showed changes in morphology and behavior when minerals were treated in both acid and alkaline condition. It was found that the morphological change showed the reaction products representing the rate of reactivity of tennantite and chalcopyrite. From the measured force of adhesion, it can be observed that in alkaline condition the surface of both minerals is more hydrophilic than that in acidic condition possessing higher value. This is in accordance with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra in which hydroxide moieties occupied the mineral surface in alkaline condition while elemental sulfur is in acidic condition."

"The paper supports applicability of satellite imagery at regional and local level for rapid quantitative assessment of natural environment in zones of activity of mining complex enterprises. Exacerbation of environmental problems during mineral mining and processing associated with their scale and geography of field distribution through the vast territory of our country requires constant monitoring of natural environment status, which necessitates engagement of space surveillance nowadays. It is proposed to use the monitoring of land cover and land use at regional and local level for the environmental assessment of a particular production or complex productions. You must establish the dependence of NDVI change trend with the magnitude of anthropogenic impact on the source or multiple sources of environmental pollution a particular area.. We present the results of studies of vegetation remote sensing methods in a number of territories placing mining enterprises. INTRODUCTION Ensuring a healthy environment is necessary both in untouched areas and disturbed. The condition of the developed territories should be monitored with particular attention, since the restoration of the disturbed territories requires great efforts and financial costs. More narrowly, the health of the environment (Zakharov V.M. and etc.,2001) means its quality ensuring the health of man and other species of living organisms, which includes two aspects (Zakharov V.M. and etc, 2000): - ensuring an environment conducive to human health as a biological species: - maintaining the health of the natural environment, i.e. its constituent species of living organisms and plants. The consequence is the disturbance of natural ecosystems, which determines the quality of the environment, favorable for human habitation and the state of health of the population in total determine the status of the territories where enterprises for the development of georesources are located and allow them to be ranked according to the degree of environmental danger. Without knowledge of the trajectory of ecosystem successions, it is impossible to offer adequate requirements for the technologies used to ensure the implementation of the preserved natural potential after the removal or reduction of man-made stress."

The application of high power microwave energy to secondary crusher products has been shown to induce micro fractures and cracks in the ore. This suggests that heap leaching could benefit from microwave-induced fractures, as the extent and kinetics of heap leaching processes depend on the accessibility of grains to lixiviants, which can potentially be improved through microwave treatment. The density and pattern of microwave induced cracks and how these cracks subsequently affect heap leaching recovery has not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to apply X-ray micro computed tomography (X-ray CT) to investigate microwave induced cracks in large cone and HPGR crushed sphalerite particles within 3D space. The ore particles were microwave treated in a single mode microwave applicator coupled to a switched mode power supply and a water cooled microwave transmission sub system operating at 2.45 GHz. The ore particles were treated at specific absorbed microwave heating energies of between 2 and 3kWh/t by treating at 6 kW of forward power for treatment times of 1 s. X-ray tomography analysis was conducted on fine (-5+4.75) mm, medium (-16+9.5) mm, and large (-25+19) mm sphalerite particles before and after microwave treatment at voxel resolutions of 5 µm, 15 µm and 25 µm respectively. Image segmentation, thresholding and spatial registration techniques were used to study crack patterns in 3D images of HPGR and cone crushed particles. Analysis of the X-ray CT images after microwave treatment shows considerable micro crack formation within the Cone and HPGR crushed particles. The cracks pattern showed interphase cracks propagating across all phases, with no evidence of preferential cracking. A greater density of microwave induced cracks was observed on fine (-5+4.75) mm particles compared to the medium (-16+9.5) mm and (-25+19) mm large particles. The results showed overall increased particle porosity following microwave treatment.

The Rhodococcus opacus microorganism was evaluated as a biocollector for flotation of barite. The electrophoretic behaviour of the mineral, before and after R. opacus interaction, was evaluated and showed that the cells adhesion shifted the mineral zeta potential curves. Adhesion tests were suggested a high affinity of the bacteria for barite. The experiments of the adsorption rate of the R. opacus on the mineral surface showed fast kinetics, achieving a maxim of cell adsorption after 5 minutes. Adsorption isotherm curves for barite could be categorized as Langmurian (L) type II. The best bioflotability results for barite achieved values around 75% for a R. opacus concentration of a R. opacus concentration of 250 ppm in the pH around 5.0. The studies were compared with the flotation of barite using a traditional collector. The bioflotation experiments were discussed considering the obtained adhesion tests. The results were supported by the Thermodynamic approach for selected pH values. The fundamental flotation studies showed the paramount potential that R. opacus presents as a biocollector and its possible application in the mineral flotation industry.

"Comparison of flotation efficiency of the new multi-zone flotation cell (MZFC) and different conventional cells was carried out at lab and pilot scales on the various samples: high contrast pyrite tailings and old copper containing tailings. MZFC is a cell of intensive flotation, which provides optimal hydrodynamic conditions for all flotation sub processes. Enhancing of particle attachment, creation of conditions for coalescent flotation, selection of spatially separated zones according to optimal hydrodynamic conditions for flotation sub-processes are proposed as main principles to design an MZFC. The bubbles/pulp stratification was pointed out as a limiting step in the existing intensive flotation machines. Two strategies to improve bubbles/pulp stratification in the MZFC were studied: (a) impact of pulp-bubble jet to the surface of a prismatic insert inside of cell, which provides the detachment of low hydrophobic particles from bubbles, and (b) profiling the pulp/bubbles jet from the reactors due to a specific geometry of cell walls. The new continuous MZFC devices were demonstrated similar or higher efficiency in comparison with laboratory batch flotation cells for pyrite flotation. Higher flotation efficiency (82%) with pure pyrite concentrate (51.2% of sulfur) and a recovery level of 92% was obtained in MZFC when the cell with stratification by impact was used. Similar results were obtained with old Cu-containing tailings. Although MZFC had 1.5 times greater yields of concentrate than a batch flotation cell, it provided the increase of chalcopyrite recovery by 29.4% and concentrate grade by 4.8%. An original organization of pulp/bubbles stratification in the separator part of the new intensive flotation machine using variable geometry inserts allowed the best flotation selectivity with a bubble mineral loading coefficient 1.5 fold higher than the laboratory mechanical or pilot cells."

Small manganese ore bodies in south Odisha, India occurs both as stratiform and stratabound ore bodies. These two ore bodies show contrasting mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics. Stratiform type of Mn-ores consists of manganese, iron and silicate- phases in approximately same proportion. In contrast, stratabound ore bodies contain a high proportion of manganese oxides, silicates and phosphorus phases. Phosphorus is found within apatite in the stratabound ore bodies while in the stratiform ore it occurs as an adsorbed state with iron phase (goethite). Both ore bodies are low-grade (17-23% Mn) therefore do not have a market value. However, the stratabound ores are enriched in phosphorus (P2O5: >1%) compared to the stratiform ores. Both the ore types were processed through gravity, magnetic and roast reduction followed by magnetic separation techniques. The strata bound ore could be upgraded to 33% Mn from a feed of 23% by combination of dry and wet magnetic separation methods. But the phosphorus content also suits up (P2O5: 1.2%) in the processed product making it unsuitable for further use. The stratiform ores do not respond to either gravity or magnetic separation because of close association of manganese with iron phases. However, this could be beneficiated through roast reduction followed by magnetic separation. An ore with 17% Mn content could be upgraded to 40% Mn with a 42% yield and 78% recovery. The goethite, having phosphorus, converts to magnetite and is retained within the magnetic fraction, thereby reducing the concentration of phosphorus in the non-magnetic fraction, which becomes the product. This report demonstrates the influence of ore petrology in determining the up-gradational potential of manganese ore in the southern Odisha, India. The demand for high-grade iron ore has increased the importance of beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The captive mines of Tata Steel Limited, India has reserves of Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) ore assayed 40% Fe, 40% SiO2 and <1% Al2O3. QEMSCAN study has revealed haematite and quartz as a major iron bearing and gangue mineral phases respectively. Liberation characteristics have showed 80% liberation can be obtained at particle size below 10µm. In the present study, reverse cationic froth flotation of BHJ using ether diamines is explored in Denver-D12 flotation cell. Polynomial response surface regression equation coupled with six-factor Box-Behnken design of experiments is used to generate the correlation between process separation efficiency and flotation parameters. Flotation studies of BHJ indicated that concentrate of 62% Fe can be achieved with 62% Fe recovery from Jig concentrate at optimum conditions. "Copper(II) can be recovered or removed from acidic copper sulfate solutions as cuprite or metallic copper powder by reduction with carbohydrates (van der Weijden et al., 2001, 2002). In order to make this process suitable for a commercial scale pipe reactor, process conditions and reactor configuration need to guarantee proper throughput of the dilute suspension. This is where crystal engineering also comes into view. Copper powder characteristics, such as size and shape of particles, influence the tendency to adhere to reactor walls and to agglomerate, which in turn influence the throughput. Furthermore, separation, drying, packaging and product quality, are dependent on the powder characteristics.In this paper the effect of both chemical and physical parameters on the shape and size of particles were systematically studied in a number of autoclave experiments. These parameters include mixing, Cu(II) concentration, pH, temperature, seeding, use of additives and reactor materials. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations of copper growth inside a Kenics static mixer were made. Results show that the use of additives, and the use of static mixers influence particle characteristics the most."

The Separation in Froth (SIF) technique is based on the idea that the pulp is fed directly onto the froth layer prepared on the surface of liquid medium providing an effective method for separation of coarse particles up to a few millimeters size. Thus the SIF process can result in substantial savings in grinding energy and flotation chemicals. In this work flotation of apatite, calcite and silicate minerals from various industrial sources was investigated using laboratory and pilot plant-scale SIF machines. Flotation of diamonds was also investigated on laboratory scale. It was observed that all the minerals mentioned above can be successfully floated up to about 3 mm particle size. Beneficiation tests with the coarse fractions of classification circuits indicated that final grade calcite concentrate can be obtained with over 90% recovery in one SIF step in this grain size (typically 0,1 to 1,5 mm). Similarly, substantial upgrading of coarse apatite was achieved without grinding it to the fineness required by conventional flotation. SIF could also be applied to the recovery of coarse apatite from the tailings of a conventional flotation process. The capacity measured in the pilot plant test runs for a 1 m2 cell was typically 30 t/m2h. Presently, a full-scale process using the SIF technology is being installed for coarse apatite recovery.

Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

The design of a hydrometallurgical process starts with the analysis of the raw materials to be treated, for example mineralogy, chemistry, deposit size are analysed. Based on this information suitable unit processes for pre-treatment, leaching, solution purification and product recovery are selected. Typically, process design for the new ore deposit relies on laboratory tests such as pre-treatment and leaching experiments. The experimental work is the most time consuming and expensive part of the process design. Reducing the number of experiments would shorten the time of designing a new flowsheet or development of new process technology. A large amount of information is available about the hydrometallurgical experiments and the amount is increasing continuously. For example, word search using ?hydrometallurgy? from Scopus database results in over 4 000 publications with the word in title, abstract or keywords. This number consists of 2 500 articles, 900 conference papers, and 90 reviews since 1972. The number of hydrometallurgical publications per year has increased from 13 in 1972 to 150-200 in the last few years. The objective of this study was to analyze how detailed data of experiments about the gold extraction is published and how that data could be exploited more effectively when designing hydrometallurgical processing for new ore. The leading idea is that similar ores should have the similar response in leaching. If the published information was used more efficiently, the amount of experiments would be reduced. More than 200 cases of experimental data of gold leaching have been analyzed for this study. There are over 30 factors that could be used in comparison when selecting process alternatives, but challenging fact is that not all these factors are documented in all publications. Results show that the usefulness of the published data in the development of hydrometallurgical flow sheet for gold using decision-support tools is not that straightforward. The quality of the published information about gold extraction varied between the publications and the descriptions of the raw materials, experimental arrangements and results were often missing details. Methods to normalize the data for description of the cases and a system to describe different features unambiguously are needed. In the leaching of gold in aqueous cyanide solutions the rate of gold leaching may be decreased by the passivation of the gold, that may however be prevented or reversed in the presence of lead species in solution. In the present study potentiostatic, potentiodyanamic and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis were used to further clarify the action of lead ions on the anodic activity of gold in alkaline cyanide solutions. It was found that lead increased the gold dissolution rate as it deposited on the gold surface at potentials more positive than its reversible Nernst potential for bulk metal deposition, i.e. by underpotential deposition mechanism, but that it decreased gold activity if present as bulk plated lead on the gold.

Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

Newmont Batu Hijau operates with an accelerated mining rate to optimize life of mine (LOM) project economics. This results in a portion of ore mined being stockpiled for reclaim and processing throughout, and at the end of mine life. LOM economics can be further enhanced by preserving stockpiled ore value by mitigating oxidation effects. A detailed stockpile ore oxidation study was conducted to: ?? Develop a practical understanding of how oxidation affects ore value; ?? Determine how oxidation rate can be controlled, and; ?? Determine how oxidation effects can be mitigated to preserve ore value. The result of the study is a stockpile management strategy that significantly reduces oxidation related losses and, implementation of that strategy within practical constraints. Implementation includes installation of Controlled Potential Sulfidisation (CPS) flotation to facilitate oxidised sulfide copper recovery and, recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage solution into saleable product. This paper describes the study results including managing and predicting stockpile oxidation with time, monitoring performance of implemented CPS flotation and recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage. These are essential elements of successful long term mine operation in Batu Hijau.

In comminution research, ore breakage and wear are usually studied independently of one another. Much of this is due to the fact that wear is usually a slow process compared to ore kage. However, the abrasion wheel test used to determine the abrasive wear contribution to total steel media wear provides the opportunity to study not only abrasive wear and friction but also ore breakage. In this paper, we will explore the use of the abrasion wheel wear test device to study abrasive wear, friction and ore breakage using standard Ottawa foundry sand. We will look into the feasibility of applying the work index as well as t10methodologies to this test set-up. We will also look at how the work index results evolve with abrasive wear and friction. We will then discuss the merits of pursuing the use of this abrasion wheel test for not only wear characterization but also breakage characterization.

"DEM application in mineral processing has for many years been heavily focused on simulating mills of various types. This method can be used to simulate many other aspects of mineral processing operations and can be used both to enhance understanding of the underlying flows and of issues such a breakage, wear, blockage, product degradation, segregation and mixing. The application of DEM to four important classes of non-comminution problems and equipment commonly found in or near mineral processing plants are described. These are:- Particle transport (examples include a conveyor belt and an inclined screw conveyor)- Sampling (assessment of sample bias for cross-stream samplers)- Separation (the efficiency of vibrating screens)- Storage and reclaim (discharge from a multi-port hopper and segregation in a splitter bin with asymmetric ingoing and outgoing conveyor belts, apron feeders and impact plate)."
