Enormous amount of iron ore fines is generated, due to partly soft and friable nature, during mining. Coal fines are also produced during their processing. These fines cannot be used directly in ironmaking reactors. Utilization of these fines for extracting metal is of vital concern for resource conservation and pollution control, and therefore, a novel concept of agglomeration by cold-bonding is developed. Composite briquettes/pellets of iron ore fines with coal fines were prepared in the laboratory by cold-bonding technique. Various binders such as lime, Ca(OH)2, slaked lime, dextrin, molasses, fly ash etc were employed either alone or in combination in different proportions for making composite briquettes/pellets. It was possible to obtain dry strength of composite briquettes more than 300 N/briquette in some cases and more than 200 N/briquette in many trials. The combination of fly ash with slaked lime and molasses produced the highest strength, more than 400 N/briquette. Drop strength and shatter index values of composite briquettes/pellets were also measured. In briquettes, best compressive strength (978 N/briquette) is observed by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) binder. In pellet, best compressive strength (362 N/pellet) is achieved by PVA; shatter index (0.1%) and dry drop strength (158 numbers) are also good. Compressive strength above 200 N/pellet is obtained by fly ash, slaked lime and molasses combination.

The flotation-related properties of hexanol derivatives and mono-alkyl ethers of propylene oxide, which include many important flotation frothers (e.g. MIBC, DF-200, DF-250, DF-1012, etc.) have been studied. The obtained results show that the DFI (Dynamic Foamability Index) - CCC (Critical Coalescence Concentration) plot can be used to classify flotation frothers. The frothers characterized by low CCC and high DFI values have properties of strong flotation frothers, while those with high CCC and low DFI values are more selective. The proposed frother classification system, based on simple CCC and DFI measurements, provides, for the first time, a solid ground-work for characterization of the flotation frothers.

"More complex ore comminution and concentration operations have found increasing application in the mining industry due to lower grades and higher complexity of the available ores. An alternative to coping with the higher capital and operating costs of ore processing plants is the use of pre-concentration stages. They allow removing a significant mass of material with little or no content of the relevant mineral before the ore is fed into the processing plant, with the consequent reduction in the mass to be processed in downstream operations. Significant benefits arise out of the use of pre-concentration, such as higher contained metal output without the need to increase the grinding or flotation capacity, and longer mine life. The grade of marginal ores could be enhanced to a level that would make their exploration economically feasible, which would result in increasing exploitable reserves. Nevertheless, few studies to date have assessed the resulting impacts on ore grinding energy consumption and wear after the gangue is removed through pre-concentration operations. This study evaluated the energy consumption and wear of grinding circuits in Brazilian mining operations in which the feed has gone through a pre-concentration stage. Such assessment was based on different samples of sulfide and oxide ores. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the power consumption and wear of grinding circuits with and without a pre-concentration stage. Laboratory test results were used to simulate industrial grinding circuits based on both alternatives and illustrate the environmental and economic benefits of each one.INTRODUCTION Increasingly complex ore concentration operations in several stages have found broadening application in recent years in view of lower grades and higher complexity of the available ores. An alternative to coping with the higher capital and operating costs of ore processing plants is the use of pre-concentration stages. Different ore processing technologies can be used for that purpose, such as magnetic separation, density segregation, and separation methods based on high-tech sensors (ore sorting). Currently, the most common methods are gravimetric processes, in view of their low cost, particularly jigging and dense medium separation methods, such as the drum and cone separators manufactured by Western Machinery Company, Teska, Drewboy, Norwalt, Dynawhirlpool and Tri-flo, and dense medium cyclones (CAMPOS; LUZ; BRAGA, 2010). The use of dry ore sorters has also grown significantly in recent years (Jose Neto et al. 2017). The selection of the separator type depends essentially on the ore particle size, required flows, and operating density ranges. All these methods may even be used after preferential blasting in mining (Grigg & Delemontex, 2015)."

"The copper mining industry in Chile and perhaps in other countries as well is faced with the challenge to implement the best practices in order to achieve a sustainable and more environment-friendly growth. Relationships between mining industry and society have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. Whereas the ore grade has declined continuously, this has involved an intensive energy and water consumption thus increasing operational costs at different stages of the concentration process. In the case of copper sulphide ore concentration, froth flotation is the main technology used worldwide. The amount of the different chemical reagents used in flotation plants (i.e., collectors, depressants, frothers and modifiers) affects significantly production costs and has a negative effect on the environment as well. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the use of biosolids and their main components (i.e., glucose, proteins and humic substances) as more environment-friendly flotation collectors for chalcopyrite and molybdenite. For this purpose, microflotation tests were conducted in a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, FTIR and zeta potential experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of biosolids with these sulphide minerals. Biosolids and their main components may interact through physical and chemical ways due to different affinities with such sulphide minerals as chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite, which are present in copper sulphide ores. In alkaline pHs, biosolids and their main components make the zeta potential of the sulphide minerals investigated more negative. These results may provide important information concerning the behavior of the main sulphide minerals in the concentration of copper sulphide ores at industrial scale, wherein mill processes could affect their surfaces properties. Therefore, biosolids and their main components may open an opportunity to be used in copper sulphide flotation plants to partially replace conventional reagents, which are more hazardous and less environment-friendly."

"Seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits have been identified as important marine metal resources for the future. However, literature on mineral processing of SMS is currently limited, and to date, no research has been published on processing of SMS from either active or inactive hydrothermal vent fields on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge. In this paper, individual SMS rock samples from the Loki’s Castle area were tested. Chalcopyrite, isocubanite and sphalerite represented the main copper and zinc bearing minerals in the SMS samples, whereas the gangue consisted of barite and silica. Based on the X-ray transmission response (XRT), i.e. differences in the atomic number of elements in tested samples, and using portable XRF (PXRF) values of elemental composition, individual particles were classified as a either product (low barium / high to low silicon / high copper and zinc) or waste (high barium / high silicon / low copper and zinc). The classification was based on the elemental composition of the samples with the cut-off grade equal to 0.5% for copper. It was shown that the XRT discrimination analysis correlated well with elemental (PXRF) data classification. The results clearly indicate that X-ray transmission sensor-based sorting can be used a useful technique for preconcentration of SMS rock samples. INTRODUCTION Due to different compositions of investigated samples, sensor-based sorting is a useful technique for preconcentration of different materials. The aim of using sensor-based sorting is to upgrade an ore by reducing the quantity of overall waste material reporting to the next processing stage. This can be achieved by eliminating (reducing) the waste fraction. By applying sensor-based sorting, the energy consumption for particle comminution as well as the required process water and reagents can be decreased. The total volume of the waste rejection leads to a proportional reduction in the total energy costs (Lessard et al., 2014, 2016)."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. The froth zone in a flotation cell is recognised as a region which contributes to the overall flotation performance. Froth recovery is a measure of the efficiency with which the froth phase delivers particles arriving at the pulp-froth interface to the concentrate. Poor froth recovery in scavenger stages is generally attributed to poor froth stability. The key indicators of froth performance: froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery were measured in an OK3 pilot cell installed at a zinc concentrator in Australia and supplied with scavenger feed. Cell hydrodynamic and pulp chemical conditions during the operation of the cell were also measured as well as bubble growth across the froth phase. The objective of the work was to assess the impact of a number of commercial frothers on the froth performance in the OK3 cell and assess the suitability of using bubble growth as an indicator of froth stability.

Reverse flotation is usually used for hematite/silica or bauxite/clay flotation separation in which the silica or clay is floated and rejected. Some properties of these silicate minerals such as particle size and surface characteristics have significant effect on their flotation behaviours. Firstly, the silicate mineral particles (especially clay minerals) generally have fine particle size (< 5 microns) in their natural states or due to overgrinding and they display poor flotation kinetics, consequently having low flotation recovery. Secondly, the wettability difference on different particle basal planes influences the affinity for adsorptions of different types of chemicals such as collectors or macro-molecule. Common polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants can be used to minimize the exposure of the most hydrophilic planes of clay particles via hydrogen bonding but they can not efficiently enhance the overall particle surface floatability due to the hydrophilic properties of this type of macromolecules. A novel method to improve both flotation kinetics and surface wettability of silicate minerals has been developed and studied. That is to use a temperature-sensitive polymer, poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM), as a process aid in the flotation of silicate minerals. Unlike PAM polymers, PNIPAM can induce a hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition on the particle surface when the temperature is changed to be lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST). At a lower temperature, the PNIPAM adsorbs on the particle surface via hydrogen bond similar to PAM. It induces strong hydrophobic aggregation when the temperature is increased above the CST. Thus, both floc size and mineral floatability are greatly increased. The flotation results show very good flotation performance and the addition of conventional flotation collector was no more required because the increased particle surface hydrophobicity induced by PNIPAM. Contact angle measurements explained the role of PNIPAM in manipulating particle surface hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition.

The bioremediation capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells was investigated for the biosorption of lead ions from aqueous solution. The various parameters such as pH, kinetics, biomass loading and concentration of lead affecting the biosorption process were studied. Complete bio removal of lead could be achieved for an initial concentration of 12.4 mg/L at pH 6.2, corresponding to typical industrial effluents. The biosorption isotherm followed Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy (?G) was determined to be-30.8 kJ/mole, indicative of chemisorption between the functional groups of the bacterial surface and lead. The biosorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second order model. The possible mechanisms of interaction of lead with the bacterial cells are discussed. A carbon paste electrode with a coating of biomass was developed for lead ion detection in aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetric technique. Concentrations of lead up to 5x10-5 M could be successfully detected using cyclic voltammetry, which could be improved to a detection limit of 1x10-8 M adopting differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The solubility of wollastonite and its Hallimond flotation behavior as a function of dodecylamine concentration and pH are examined. The flotation response is characterized by adsorption and surface energy in the presence of amine. The methods of UV-Visible and FT-IR spectroscopy for adsorption and sessile-drop contact angle for surface energy estimation are employed. The results of wollastonite dissolution clearly showed its non uniform dissolution. The surfaces are depleted with calcium ions and became rich in silicon within 10 min of flotation time. Maximum flotation of wollastonite corresponds to a half monolayer coverage of amine, which is substantiated by the surface energy parameters. A good correlation between flotation, adsorption and surface energy as a function of amine concentration and pH was observed. The sudden increase in wollastonite flotation and amine adsorption at and above 5x10-5 M initial amine concentration is thought to be due to two-dimensional precipitation of amine on surface in accordance with the recent 2D-3D precipitation model of amine adsorption on silicate minerals.

In India, bauxite deposits are concentrated in Central India, Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats. Bauxites from various regions in Gujarat were identified during the present investigations of geochemical mapping. Different types of Bauxites samples were collected from Kachchh, Jamnagar, Porbunder, Junagarh, Bhavnagar and Amreli areas of Gujarat state and were studied in detail for their geochemical signatures to plot the data on Geochemical map. Raw bauxites were characterized by using powder XRD, XRF, ICP and optical microscopy techniques (with the help of Model microscope having both transmitted and reflected light setups) and were later examined to grade their quality. Most of the bauxites from Kachchh region were of high-grade (gibbsitic) type; while those of Sourashtra region were of low-grade (lateritic / calcitic) types. Most of these bauxites were either of ferruginous/lateritic or of calcareous/calcitic types. Based on the mineralogical composition, such as gibbsite, hematite and/or goethite, Kaolinite and calcite minerals present in particular bauxites, the deposits were graded. Finally, the Geochemical mapping of Bauxites for Gujarat region was prepared and discussed.

Some of the Indian origin iron ore deposits located in Bellary, Karnataka province are having peculiar characteristics of Iron ore deposits (Hematite) having Iron above 64% and 30-40% lump (-30+6mm) recovery which are not suitable to use in blast furnace due to not meeting the specification of Tumbler Index and Abrasion Index. In general for high grade Iron ores, process flow sheet involves crushing and screening (dry/wet). In the contest of high grade Iron ores located at Bellary sector of Karnataka state in India, lump generated from this process could not attain the required physical properties (Tumbler Index, Abrasion Index) and metallurgical properties , even though the grade of the lump ore is above 64% Fe. Washing techniques like Drum scrubber and Log washer play major role in improving the metallurgical properties of Iron ore lumps by removing the light and hard layers of clay, silica coated over the lumps. In this study the effects were compared of drum scrubbing and log washing on iron ore lumps. It is found that by incorporating simple washing technique i.e. drum scrubbing or log washing, Tumbler Index of Iron ore Lumps could be increased from 74% to 78% which is acceptable for use in Blast furnace. From the Drum scrubber and Log washer tests, it is clear that Log washers have an edge over Drum scrubber in removing hard coated clay on surface of Lumps. This simple washing technique facilitate us to utilize the lumps directly in blast furnace and eliminate the unnecessary crushing and grinding of the ore so as to meet the specifications of Sinter fines and pellet feed.

The Bayer process used for refining bauxite to smelting grade Alumina serves as the linchpin of the Aluminum production industry worldwide. Even though the process is well established, the presence of impurities in the liquor affects the quality of product and imposes a major economic cost on the industry. This review article focuses on the issues pertaining to Gibbsitic (Al2O3.3H2O) precipitation circuit. The comprehensive review provides a basic understanding of the aluminum trihydrate precipitation and agglomeration phenomena. Crystal growth rate and agglomeration play a significant role in determining the output PSD of agglomerates. Hence, the effect of certain thermodynamic and hydrodynamic parameters along with the impact of impurities (oxalates, aldols, acids etc.) and additives on hydrate growth has been reviewed.

Copper nickel separation is performed by mineral processing techniques both pre and post smelting in Copper Cliff at Vale Canada?s Operations. The separation at Clarabelle Mill takes advantage of the ore mineralogy to affect a separation on the rougher concentrate where chalcopyrite and pentlandite exhibit high liberation and high recoveries thus their separation is simple although incomplete. The copper concentrate comprises only 50% of the copper in ore with the remaining copper being separated post smelting in the Matte Separation plant where the slow cooled Bessemer Matte is again treated by mineral processing operations using flotation to separate the chalcocite and heazlewoodite and magnetic separators to remove a metallic nickel alloy. This paper discusses the mineralogy, separation processes and work currently underway to improve the separation of copper from nickel in these plants.

The results of the test work on gold leaching using high strength of cyanide solution in the presence of activators are presented. The major physical and chemical relationships of gold leaching were determined. Intensive cyanidation results of gravity concentrates with various material compositions using an activator are given. In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.

Frothing behavior of surfactants originate from their preferential adsorption at the gas-solution interface. Different surfactants may demonstrate different adsorption behaviors depending on their molecular structure and surface activity. The quantity and rate of adsorption of surfactants at the gas- solution interface in flotation systems will certainly affect kinetics of reaction and fractionation of surfactant between bulk and foam phase and subsequently their frothing characteristics. In this paper, the frothing characteristics of sodium oleate which is the main constituent of fatty acids used in flotation systems is explained. The adsorption behavior of sodium oleate is then compared to a typical non-ionic frother (Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol, MIBC) in terms of different adsorption behavior at the gas-solution interface. Since long chain fatty acids are weak electrolytes, their behavior is a strong function of pH. Also semi soluble salts including apatite contain considerable amounts of ions like calcium in their lattice, so the effect of presence of ions on the frothing behavior of fatty acids requires an investigation. A mass balance on the surfactant transferred to the foam was solved to estimate the bubble surface area flux in foam, which explained how the adsorbed surfactant at gas-solution interface controls the bubble surface area flux at foam. Since sodium oleate adsorption at foam takes place gradually, frother concentration as a function of time was monitored by the total organic carbon measurement (TOC) to compare the surfactant uptake rate at different concentrations, pH and ionic strength. The surfactant concentration adsorbed within foam together with the value of adsorption density from the Gibbs adsorption, leads to the calculation of the surface area flux and prediction of average bubble size in the foam at a specific time frame. This value was compared at different concentrations of sodium oleate. Dynamic surface tension measurements were accompanied to explain the adsorption behavior, though finally equilibrium surface tension turns out to better explain the foamability characteristics. An approach to environmental sustainability and improved process economy, in sulphide minerals production is recycling of process water in flotation of complex sulphide ores, although the chemistry of process water may be a critical issue to flotation efficiency. The influence of major components of calcium and sulphate ions in process water on xanthate collector adsorption and flotation response using pure chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite minerals were investigated by Hallimond flotation, zeta-potential measurement, FTIR and XPS spectroscopy studies, while bench scale flotation tests were also carried out using complex sulphide ores. The impact of the species in flotation was comprehended using deionised water, tap water, process water and simulated water containing equivalent amount of calcium and sulphate species in process water. Hallimond flotation results showed a decrease of chalcopyrite and galena recovery in process water and also in the presence of calcium and sulphate ions in both deionised and process waters, whereas sphalerite does not respond to flotation. The adsorption of calcium and metal ions but not sulphate ions on the minerals is evidenced by zeta-potential data. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface oxidized sulfoxy species and surface calcium carbonates on chalcopyrite in the presence of process water and water containing calcium ions, surface oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on galena in the presence of deionised water, process water and water containing calcium and sulphate ions, all at flotation pH 10.5, and these surface species influenced xanthate adsorption. The presence of surface oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species at the sphalerite flotation pH 11.5 were seen in the presence of deionised water, process water and water containing calcium and sulphate ions, but the surface species does not influence xanthate adsorption. Bench scale flotation using two different complex sulphide ores showed that chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite recoveries are better in process water than tap water. The studies showed that the process water can be recycled in flotation with no detrimental effect on grade and recovery of sulphide minerals. In this paper, the producing process of using V2O3 as raw material to obtain vanadium nitride was analyzed through the means of thermodynamic. The analysis shows that conversion follows the principle of reduction step by step in the conversion process of V2O3. The temperature of the reaction system has prominent influence on the nitrogen content of products, and the reaction is very sensitive to temperature. As raising temperature, the fine grain structure of the nitrides is more evident, and the grain size of nitrides increases. At 1703K, the nitrogen content of the products tended to be constant after soaking over 3 hours.

The present research covers the results of experiments carried out with high frequency vibration screen on dewatering of coal fines. In the tests, the addition of surface active reagents was studied employing a high frequency vibrating screen. To increase the efficiency of mechanical dewatering processes, ultrasonic treatment was applied along with surfactants and optimum dewatering conditions were obtained. The moisture content of the feed material was from 82.5% to 41% by the optimization of operation parameters including the angle of the screen, vibration frequency, feed rate and screen opening size. Optimum parameters obtained in dewatering processes carried out with the vibrating screen were kept constant and the effects of surface active reagents and ultrasonic treatment on dewatering were investigated. Finally, the moisture level of the material was further reduced from 41.0% to 37.66%.
