"In the differential metal sulfide ore flotation it is desirable to replace the toxic inorganic depressants with environmentally benign chemicals. Chitosan, as a natural and non-toxic polymer, has been proven to be an efficient depressant for chalcopyrite while allowing galena to be floated by xanthate collectors. However, the poor solubility of chitosan limits its potential applications as the flotation could only be carried out at about pH 4 where chitosan is soluble. A carboxymethyl derivative of chitosan, named N-carboxymethyl chitosan (N-CMC), was synthesized by substituting the amino groups of chitosan with carboxymethyl groups. The substitution significantly improved the solubility of chitosan. The structure of N-CMC was studied and compared with chitosan via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Flotation tests were performed on single minerals and mineral mixtures (with weight ratio of 1:1) with the addition of appropriate amount of potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and N-CMC. The solution pH was varied from neutral to alkaline. The flotation concentrates and tailings were collected and analysed for the contents of copper and lead. FTIR measurements showed that new peaks of C=O stretching of -COOH and N-H deformation of -NH- appeared in N-CMC, which indicated that the carboxymethyl groups were introduced and the amino groups were the sites for the substitution. Flotation results indicated that N-CMC could depress either chalcopyrite or galena depending on the pH. The results were not affected by the sequence of KEX and N-CMC addition. Therefore, N-CMC is potentially useful in Cu-Pb sulfide separation following a bulk Cu-Pb flotation. The N-CMC was also found to have surface cleaning functions, and was able to remove contaminating copper ions from galena surfaces. Therefore, its application in sulfide ore flotation is expected to be more robust than the original chitosan."

"Nickel-metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) are storers of electrochemical energy, which have a higher specific storage capacity than lead or nickel-cadmium batteries. The demand for Nickel-metal hydride batteries is increasing rapidly since their market launch in the early 1990’s. Today there is no suitable and sustainable recycling process to recover nickel, cobalt and rare-earth metals. The discarded batteries are used today in the steel industry as alloy material because they contain nickel. Cobalt and rare-earth metals (RE) are lost; they are non-recycleable.In a German governmental funded research project, IME Aachen, ACCUREC Mühlheim and UVR-FIA Freiberg are cooperating in processing as well as in creating a feasibility study. The target of this project is the development of a new recycling process for metal recovery from Ni-MH-batteries. The proposed process described in this paper consists of a combination of mechanical, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing steps. This process is capable of treating all types of Ni-MH-batteries. After comminution steel and organics are separated. The separated Ni-MH is smelted in an electric arc furnace. The products are a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase enriched with rare-earth oxides for further treatment to ‘mischmetal’. Both the Nickel-Cobalt alloy and the ‘mischmetal’ will be directly used in battery production."

Hydrothermal method was applied in the preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers in airtight re-actor using gypsum as primary materials. The optimum conditions of preparation are as follows: pH value 9.8~10.1, concentration 5%, material size 18.1µm, which were determined by the analysis of the diameter of CaSO4 whiskers through SEM. On these conditions a product of ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with diameter of 0.19µm and aspect ratio of 98 is obtained. Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with different concentrations, modified by titanate NDZ-401, were added into polypropylene as intensifier and composites of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers/ polypropylene were prepared by melting-extruding method. Mechanical performance of the composites was tested and surface morphology of the composites was observed by SEM. The results indicated that impact notched izod of the composites was enhanced by 49.5% compared with pure polypropylene when 10.0% Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers were added into polypropylene and toughening effect was very remarkable. Dispersion behaviour and interface phenomenon of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers in polypropylene matrix were investigated by SEM. The results indicated that Dispersion performance of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers modified by titanate NDZ-401 in polypropylene matrix is good, which improved mechanical performance of composites to some extent.

Water has become a scarce resource in quality. Companies in the ornamental stones sector use water intensively in their processes. Given the current situation, it is imperative to rationalize this feature that at first is related to the reduction of consumption, through no waste. Considering the importance of environmental preservation of this resource and also to comply with the legislation that governs the procedure for processing of ornamental stones, new alternatives should be available for the maintenance of current activities and promoting the development / growth of the sector on the principles of environmental sustainability and economic in future scenarios. The ornamental stones processing industries, especially for micro and small enterprises, require the implementation of a management program that optimizes the use of this feature, since the techniques individually processed operate with three basic processes dependent on water use: split blocks, polishing and finishing slabs. This technology requires a large volume of water resources and control measures involving operating recirculation water can minimize power consumption, making the company more profitable and sustainable. This is a survey of literature, associated with technical reports provided by partner companies and government agencies. This study aimed to the organization and provision of theoretical knowledge about the subject matter coupled with management practices, which may be reproduced or re-purposed in ornamental stones processing companies. It should be noted that the industry in question is lacking in technical expertise for the implementation of sustainable attitudes relevant to water reuse.

"This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the REE-Y-Nb-Zr complex ore from the ‘Khalzan Buregtei’ deposit, Mongolia. Pre-concentration based on mineralogical studies was investigated at the Unit of Mineral Processing (AMR) and the Institute of Applied Mineralogy and Economic Geology of RWTH Aachen University. In order to minimize the energy consumption in the most energy intensive grinding process a pre-concentration process using dry magnetic separation of particle sizes coarser than required for the liberation of the valuable ore minerals was designed. Dry magnetic separation in the particle size range of 63-250 µm is suitable as the pre-concentration method, due to the intergrowth of REE-Y-Nb-Zr bearing minerals with magnetic minerals determined by QEMSCAN© analysis. The results showed that a mass reduction of 45.3 wt.-% at high recoveries of REE, Y, Nb and Zr (90 wt.-% and higher) in the pre-concentration product was achieved at the beginning of the process chain. The improvement of process efficiency as shown in this study depends on the abundance and association of minerals affecting the magnetic properties (e.g. hematite) of the ores. Therefore, these mineralogical parameters are as important as grain size and ore grade for the geometallurgical evaluation of potential mining operations at ‘Khalzan Buregtei’.INTRODUCTION Polymetallic deposits containing other critical elements besides REE have the advantage of being robust to economic development and fluctuations of individual metal prices. (Gronen et al., 2016). These deposits can host economic grades of heavy and light REE, Y, Nb, Ta, Zr in complex mineralogical compositions. About 120 deposits of this type are known worldwide, including ‘Norra Kärr’ in Sweden, ‘Strange Lake’ in Canada and ‘Khalzan Buregtei’ in Mongolia which are not valued economically yet. "Apatite is an important host mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks for production of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid, and a potential source of rare earth elements (REE) production. For dissolution of REEs, sulfuric acid is better leaching reagent to develop the economical viable process for recovering of rare earth elements from apatite ore. However, the efficiency of rare earth elements dissolution in H2SO4 is about 30 % due to the formation of calcium phosphate or calcium sulfate as precipitate. On the other hands, phosphorus is mainly produced from phosphate ore. However, when treating rare earth elements containing phosphate ore, rare earth elements were discharged. Hence, development of novel apatite ore treatment process is required for effective utilization of natural resources. In this study, apatite deposit associated with REE was treated with sulfuric acid leaching and two stage precipitation by oxalic acid (C2H2O4) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for recovering REE and phosphorus, individually. Results showed that it can be seen the vast majority of La (87.5%), Ce (87.3 %), Pr (86.1 %), Nd (85.2 %) and Y (90.9 %) were dissolved in 1 mol/L diluted H2SO4 solution from the apatite ore. As average leaching rate of REE, over 85% of REE were leached by the condition. In the first stage precipitation using the obtained pregnant leach solution from leaching, over 90% of REE was precipitated by oxalic acid addition after controlling pH to 1 by NH4OH solution. After pH changed to 8.5, over 90% of phosphorus was recovered as precipitate by magnesium chloride addition in second stage precipitation"

"Because of the similar crystal structure and surface properties, it is very difficult to realize the efficient separation of magnesite and dolomite by flotation, which is the main reason restricting the utilization of magnesite resources with dolomite symbiotic. To deal with a magnesite resources with high content of calcium impurity in northwest China, a novel decalcification technology by combining flotation with leaching is proposed in this paper. In flotation process, a novel flotation collector with good efficiency and low temperature resistance was developed, and the depression effect of sodium hexametaphosphate was investigated. In leaching process, the leaching rate difference of calcium and magnesium was observed. By industrial test, from the magnesite ore with MgO content of 43.96%,the grade and recovery of obtained concentrate ( calculated by MgO) are 47.28% and 67.68% respectively, at the same time, CaO content decreases from 3.91% to 0.30%, which means that more than 95% of CaO impurity is removed.INTRODUCTIONMagnesite is one of the main raw materials for the production of refractory materials, and it is widely used in metallurgy, chemicals, ceramic, construction and other industries. China is the most important supplier of highquality magnesite resources, accounting for about 60-70% of the world's identified supply of magnesite products is provide by China (Jewell, 2014). In recent years, high-quality magnesite ores can be directly used are going to run out in China, and the utilization of magnesite resources with high impurity content have drawn more attention.The main purpose of purification for magnesite is to remove SiO2 and CaO impurities which affects the strength of the refractory material. Flotation is the commonly used method to remove impurities in magnesite ore. Reverse flotation with cationic collector is usually adopted to remove silicon containing impurities, and a great deal of literature has been reported (Santana A. N. and Peres A. E. C., 2001; Wang and Sun, 2008; Zhu et al, 2014; Wu et al, 2015; Ivan B. et al, 2017). But when the major gangue component is dolomite, it is very difficult to realize the efficient separation due to the similar crystal structure and surface properties between magnesite and dolomite. To solve this problem, researches have studied the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite, such as wettability, electrical property, solubility and solution chemistry (Nermin and Nurgul, 2006; Nermin 2006; Ozbek and Abali, 1999; Lacin et al, 2005; Bayrak et al, 2006; Bakan et al, 2006; Chen G. and Tao D., 2004), but the commonly studied direct flotation using oleic acid as collector is still hard to receive an ideal effect."

As a kind of collector, Xanthates are generally used to make sulfide minerals hydrophobic in flotation process. Xanthate adsorption on a galena surface has been widely studied experimentally. In this paper, DFT methods were employed to investigate the local adsorption interactions about the collectors,such as ethyl xanthate (CH3CH2OCS2?, EO) and ethyl trithiocarbonate (CH3CH2SCS2?, ES), absorbing on two different PbS clusters. From the results, it can be easily found that, on the edge or at the apex, both collectors, with two S atoms bidentate coordinating on the clusters, have surprising interaction energies, while on the surface, its interaction is relatively weak in the form of monodentate ligand. NBO analysis results reveal that there is at least a covalence bond with sulfur atom about 10% and lead atom about 90% when the absorbed lead is on the lattice edge or at apex, but, if the absorbed lead is on the lattice surface, no covalence band would be found. Meanwhile, the S-Pb bond, formed by the absorbed Xanthate and galena lattice, seems to have much more covalence characteristic than that formed in the PbS lattice inner. Furthermore, those data also imply that the difference of the collecting effect between the EO and the ES may be not notable, because of the similar distance and the interaction energy for the same interaction mode.

The treatment of iron-hydroxide-containing water from ground water and surface water is achieved by a combination of the process steps of flocculation and subsequent mechanical dewatering. The aim is to create solid pellet structures by extending the structure forming flocculation process with a build-up pelletizing process which can be transferred directly into a drying unit. A Taylor-Couette-reactor (diameter of the inner cylinder – 40 mm, gap width – 5 mm) was used for these experimental studies. To produce the necessary flow profile the inner cylinder was rotated at a speed of 230 rpm. The iron hydroxide-containing suspension (dry matter content: 2 mass %) was added simultaneously with the addition of a cationic high-molecular flocculant in various flocculant dosages and residence times of 5 to 15 min. The pellets were examined for parameters such as geometric dimensions, dry substance content and dewatering behaviour. As the results show, there is a direct relationship between the residence time and the geometric dimensions of the pellets. After a residence time of 5 min, round pellets with an average diameter of 6 mm were formed. With an increase in the residence time up to 15 min, a compaction of the pellets could be observed, which resulted in an increase in the dry substance content of 8.0 to 11.2 mass % on average. After completion of the pelletizing process, the pellets were mechanically dewatered by filtration. By applying this innovative wet pelletizing of iron-hydroxide containing suspensions in a Taylor-Couette-reactor, it is possible to carry out the process of flocculation combined with the pellet formation with simultaneous pellet compaction in a single process step. The resulting pellet structures are distinguished from conventional floc structures by an improved water discharge capacity. After classification the pellets can be marked directly as easy-to-handle bulk material, suitable as feedstock in percolation columns for the purification of contaminated fluid streams

"The platinum group metals (PGMs) and associated minerals are particularly refractory to most traditional direct leach processes. However, the remoteness of many new ore deposits, socio-political risks, the scarcity of skilled labor and constraints on the availability of water and electrical power makes it increasingly more difficult to implement the conventional mill-float-smelt-refine process routes to extract and refine PGMs in remote areas. This paper discusses a process to extract PGM’s from low grade ore and concentrate using a sequential stage heap leach process entailing heap bioleaching and high temperature cyanide leaching, and evaluates the feasibility of implementing a carbon-in-pulp process to recover the PGMs from the pregnant leach solution. The heap bioleaching extracts the base metals in an acidic sulfate medium using a mixed culture of thermophiles. After heap bioleaching the heap is reclaimed, rinsed, agglomerated and restacked for high temperature cyanide leaching where the cyanide liquor is directly heated via solar energy in panels. Palladium, gold and platinum are recovered during the cyanide leaching stage. The pregnant leach solution was evaluated for potential carbon-in-pulp adsorption and subsequent elution similar to gold processing. The kinetics of adsorption and elution compared well with gold adsorption and elution."

This paper presents the preliminary results of a research programme conducted to assess the feasibility of a flotation technique in the remediation of soils severely affected by heavy metal contamination. The use of flotation in soil remediation is a recent practice. The main difficulties are given by the variety and peculiarity of the heavy metal containing species, and also by the grain size. Most of the studies reported in the literature concern the use of conventional collectors, such as xanthates, after a preliminary chemical modification of the metal bearing species through sulphidization. On the basis of the minera-petrographic characterization and of speciation, some classes of reagents have been selected, capable of acting both on metal-bearing species and all metallic cations to be separated. The design of the synthetic molecules has been based on the coordinative properties of the metallic centres and functionalized in order to act as collectors for a wide range of metals independently on their surrounding atoms. In laboratory experiments a sample of stream sediment has been utilized, whose contamination is caused by the runoff from Sardinia mine waste dumps and overflow from the settling ponds. The material showed contamination mainly from Zn, Pb and Cu and to a lesser extent from Cr, Ni, Cd, and Sb associated in mixed particles of Fe and Mn. Flotation tests on a laboratory scale have been performed on grain sizes less than 355 µm in laboratory cell Minerais & Metaux. The effects of the structure of collectors (functional group, chain configuration) as well as of the principal flotation parameters (such as pH, concentration of reagent) on the grade and recovery of heavy metals in the concentrate and in the tailings (remediated soil) have been investigated. The results of the laboratory tests substantially confirm the theoretical premises, and the most effecive reagents found belong to the classes ATP, MBT, MBO, fat acids and phosphates.

"There is abundant rare-earth element(REE) in our country, but it is very fragmented in the earth's crust, and it is very difficult to mining or mining cost is extremely high. There are few of industrial value rare-earth deposits. There is a lot of concomitant rare-earth deposits, and the comprehensive utilization value is high. There is very rich carlin-type gold resource, associated with a certain amount of REE in the southwest of Guizhou province. In order toutilize comprehensively the resources, this paper conducts the study on the occurrence characteristics of REE in the ore. By the chemical analysis, the gold grade is 3.35g/t, the organic carbon 0.81%, the total REE 0.022%, which is a high carbon fine disseminated gold ore. By the optical microscope and XRD analysis, the major minerals are quartz, pyrite, calcite, limonite, arsenopyrite, mica, kaolinite, clay minerals, etc. In addition, there is a large amount of carbonaceous materials, such as organic carbon, graphite, which is harmful on leaching of gold. By the scanning electron microscopy analysis, there are thorium, lanthanum and neodymium, ytterbium, persimmon and other REE in the ore. Gravity separation shows that REE could be enriched to lighter material mainly, which indicates that REE disseminate closely with lighter materials.INTRODUCTION Carlin-type gold ore is important gold resource in the world, which are mainly distributed in Nevada and its vicinity, as well as the two Golden Triangle of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Sichuan, Shanxi, Gansu province in China(Su W.C. et al.,2009; Xia G.X.,1996).Guizhou carlin-type gold ore is the second largest gold resource in the world(Muntean J L et al.,2011), distributing along the southwestern margin of the Yangtze plate, mainly mineralizing in the neopaleozoic-early mesozoic(Xie Z J et al.,2017). Many large gold deposits have been found in southwest in Guizhou in twentieth century, such as Zimuyou,Getang, Lannigou, Shuiyindong and Laowanchang gold deposit, and so on, and the gold reserves reach over 100 tons(Xia Y. et al.,2009).There is a certain amount of rare-earth resource in the carlin-type gold ore in the southwest in Guizhou province, and the current researches might mainly focus on characteristics of REE from the angle of geological mineralization(AnanyevY.,2015), not from the angle of separation and enrichment."

In the Sukinda valley, Orissa, India, a large quantity of overburden material is generated during the mining of chromite mineral (on average 10 tons for every ton of ore). The overburden hereby depicted as ?lateritic nickel ore? contains on an average 0.5% Ni. IMMT Bhubaneswar is working on this material for extraction of nickel and cobalt. But for better recovery of metal values, thermal activation or thermal reduction of ore is required. An alternative biotechnological route for reduction of ore is hereby attempted. An anaerobic dissimilatory Iron (III) reducing bacterial consortium (here denoted as IRB), capable of imparting iron phase changes in the lateritic nickel ore was established which improves the subsequent extraction of co-precipitated Co (III) and Ni (II) from the ore. In this study, properties of thermally and microbially reduced lateritic nickel ore are compared vis-à-vis original ore. Due to the phase changes, original light brown color of the lateritic nickel ore changes to dark brown on IRB treatment. This dissimilatory reduction of ore leads to formation of some magnetic particles, which were separable by hand held magnet. Roasting and IRB treated ore on acid leaching with H2SO4 show about 45 % and 36 % leaching of nickel ore compared to about 18 % leaching from the original lateritic ore. If bacterial reduction method is successful, cost intensive method of ore roasting process can be eliminated. Thus, it is possible to make use of dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria for recovery of valuable metals from off grade iron ore/ laterites. "Water composition has a significant effect on flotation. A better understand the role of water composition in flotation is very important for process quality and performance. Based on source of process water, the concentrations of the dissolved ions, hardness, contaminants and residual composition of reagents can varied in the process water. The various water resources employed during lead and zinc flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed on the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals were released into the flotation pulp.This paper includes a research for the effect of different water compositions on lead and zinc sulphide flotation. Experiments were carried out five types of water such as tap water, recycling water, tailing dam water, underground mine water and sea water. The ore sample was obtained from Esan Balikesir-Balya mine. The mineralogical study of ore sample shows that it contains mainly galena, sphalerite, pyrite, hematite, quartz, diopside, epidote, calcite, and chlorite. It is found that recycling water and tailing dam water has a positive effect on recovery of lead and zinc minerals and detrimental effect on content of both minerals. This result may explain with remaining reagents in these waters. Underground mine water and tap water gave nearly the same recoveries of zinc. Sea water affects the recovery lead and zinc negatively."

With a demand for increasing energy efficiency and a need for improving bitumen recovery, a highly integrated solution for sustainable lease development of Aurora North of Syncrude has been proposed and implementation plans are underway. Flocculation and thickening technology as an important component of the integrated solution provides Syncrude an opportunity of rapid heat recovery from tailings and more flexible tailings closure and reclamation options. Flocculation of fine-particle suspensions by polymers is a non-equilibrium process whose performance is strongly influenced by physical and chemical variables. While polymeric flocculants are frequently used to establish the chemical conditions favorable for flocculation, the actual performance of a flocculation process generally depends more on the physical variables, such as the hydrodynamic conditions in mixing the flocculants and slurry. In order to study the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculation of Syncrude fine tailings, a standardized laboratory test procedure called power flocculation has been developed in comparison with the conventional manual mixing methods. It is shown that the agitation speed and time in conditioning the flocculant solution and the slurry have a profound effect on the flocculation performances measured by initial settling rates, supernatant clarity and sediment density. It was found that the optimum bench test conditions for power flocculation of Aurora fine tailings with a sand-to-fine ratio (SFR) of about 1:1 are conditioning of the flocculant solution and the tailings slurry at 250 rev/min to 300 rev/min in 20 s to 40 s. The test results are inter-preted with a flocculant adsorption/redistribution kinetic model that helps understanding of the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculant adsorption, floc formation and floc growth.

The state-of-the-art of mineral mining and metallurgy industry in Russia is characterized by high demand of nonferrous, rare, rare earth metals, and highgrade coal, on the one hand, and by involvement of natural and technogenic minerals with low content of valuable components, fine (nearly emulsion) dissemination of valuable components and close physicochemical and process properties. This calls for high-productive and ecology-friendly technologies for more efficient mineral beneficiation based on intensification of operating and new methods to extract valuable components from rebellious ore and technogenic minerals, relying on the last achievements of basic sciences, combination of dressing and chemico-metallurgical processes and using advanced pyro- and hydrometallurgical technologies. The transition to a new strategy of processing is only possible based on the new technological–mineralogical appraisal of a mineral raw material. Actually, the process mineralogy has a stock of modern high-resolution physical methods for analyzing composition, structure and properties of geomaterials, inclusive of micro- and nano-levels: - Identification of micro- and nano-size noble metals, and natural and induced formations on mineral surface; - Experimental validation of structural phase and chemical transformation of minerals under different energy input; - Justification of choice and mechanism of interaction between flotation agents and noble metals with complex material constitution; - Analysis of structural, phase and chemical transformations of sulfides and rocks under leaching. Thus, process mineralogy is an informational background for a unified theoretical approach to scientific justification of flowsheets of efficient mineral processing. The article gives a brief review of practices that have found application and proved to be of high economic efficiency. Thus, Russia this time has the academic and engineering background for development of efficient energy-saving technologies for comprehensive advanced processing in accordance with the world’s standards, or even higher in terms of a number of the technologies, which has continually been highlighted by participants of recent international congresses on mineral processing.

Soil reconstruction and improvement trials and vegetation experiment is carried out at Shuilong-shan acid rock waste dumps at Dexing Copper Mine in China. pH value, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, etc. concentration in acid rock drainage (ARD) is also monitored every month since 2005. The results of experiment show that: Lime and topsoil stripped from open-pit is appropriated soil improvement material. Full cover soil improvement method is suitable for flat area, contour soil improvement method and hole soil improvement method is appropriate for slope area. The optimal plant species is ligustrum lucidum Ait,Lespedeza bicolor, Paspalum notatum, Veti-veria zizanioides, Eragrostis pilos and Neyraudia reynaudian. It is the best for Arbor, shrub and grass to be arranged in pairs or groups in order to remold optimal landscape. Pilot sites, covering 3ha, is established. Vegetation coverage reaches 90% in platform area, 40% in slope area. pH value in ARD increased slightly, Cu2+, Pb2+ concentration in ARD decreased, Zn2+ concentration in ARD decreased and varied slightly.

"The Circular Economy (CE) will play an important role in shaping a resource-efficient society. Enabling this transformation from a linear to a CE requires precise quantification of resource efficiency and thus the economic viability of the system. Based on the development of simulation tools of classical minerals processing and process metallurgy, the Outotec (2018) HSC simulation platform could be further developed (gleaning from many academically published works of the author listed below), permitting the simulation of the CE system and to subsequently calculate its resource efficiency. It enables the estimation of a simulation-based Recycling Index (RI) from a product’s Bill of Material (BoM) and Full Material Declaration (FMD). It is a unique methodology for Design for Recycling (DfR) based on minerals engineering linked to a deep understanding of minerals and metallurgical process engineering. A key to this simulation is a detailed understanding of the mineralogy (both geological and designed) of the CE system and its many products, materials and systems, both in a geological mineral and a product-designer-mineral sense. In addition, a detailed understanding and quantification of the thermodynamic properties of the system (both energy and exergy/entropy) is key to understanding its economics and its limitations. With this approach, the actual losses of the CE system are shown and thus highlights the limits of the CE as defined by minerals and metallurgical process engineering principles. INTRODUCTION From the dawn of the industrial era up to today, many of our products have been created according to the principles of a linear economy: we find resources, make a product, and then dispose of it when we are done using it. But in recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to move to a Circular Economy (CE), an approach that aims to maximize the usefulness of products, components and materials across the entire lifecycle. In terms of recycling, this means achieving maximum recovery of materials once products reach the end of their usable life while also maximizing resource efficiency. Of importance is therefore also not only the recovery of critical technology elements that make the CE system run, but also the criticality of the metallurgical infrastructure that must be present to recover these elements economically. Ellen Macarthur (2017) defines the CE as “Looking beyond the current ""take, make and dispose” extractive industrial model, the circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design. Relying on system-wide innovation, it aims to redefine products and services to design waste out, while minimising negative impacts. Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy sources, the circular model builds economic, natural and social capital.” However, when translating this significant message to images, it is striking that the key extractive industry is not depicted in the Ellen Macarthur as well as EU depiction of a CE (EU 2015). Other CE discussions are also wanting in their fundamental detail and description e.g. Accenture (2015) and Beaulieu et al. (2016)."

Several approaches to the estimation of the size discrete breakage rate and distribution parameters (kj and bi,j ) of the batch grinding kinetic model are available in the literature. Analysis of a large amount of data available in the literature and our own data on several pure minerals and complex ores has shown that it is not always possible to obtain correct estimates of the two sets of parameters using known approaches as several widely different combinations of k and b parameters can sometimes simulate the batch grinding data reasonably accurately. It has been found that there are two main reasons: (i) all size classes are not well represented in the data and (ii) functional forms used for estimation of the two sets of parameters are sometimes chosen somewhat arbitrarily (especially in the case of complex ores), though they are actually uniquely related through size continuous breakage rate and distribution functions. A suitable experimental methodology has been described and demonstrated using some synthetic data and actual experimental data. A mill function approach, which does not require making any assumptions about the functional forms for k and b parameters, is also described and demonstrated. This approach is promising, but requires further development.

"The leaching of base and precious metal ores and concentrates continues to progress in both laboratory study and industrial application. These developments are being driven by the need to respond to difficult ores and concentrates that are not amenable to conventional treatment. In many cases alternatives are being developed to conventional treatment (e.g. Pyrometallurgy) for technical and economic reasons.In this paper, a brief general review of some new developments in leaching will be followed by a more detailed explanation of three process developments that have either been industrially applied or are expected to be applied in a short time frame. The three processes to be reviewed in detail are the Mt. Gordon Copper Process, the Anglo American Corporation/University of British Columbia Copper Process and the PLATSOL Process. These leaching processes operate at low (90°C), medium (150°C) and high (220°C) temperature and are successful in quickly and completely extracting metal values from ores and concentrates."
