The surficial collapse pits of the mining areas are continuously spreading in Beiminghe iron mine of Hebei Province as a result of the exploitation, which has done a lot of damage to the circumjacent ecological environment of the mine. It is a new path to handle the mine tailings at the present time that the thickened tailings are used to backfill the collapse pits, in which way the problems of the surficial collapse and the nowhere discharge of the tailings are both solved, and the rational utilization of the mine tailings and the clean production of the mine enterprise are realized. The?200 mesh content of the tailings of Beiminghe iron mine is 76.87%, and?325 mesh content is 63.50%. Semi-industrial dehydration experiments to the tailings have been done using the hydro-cyclone classified thickening process. The results show that when FX125 hydrocyclone is adopted, the concentration of underflow can achieve 73.31%, and the yield ratio is 61.78%; when FX150 hydrocyclone is adopted, the concentration of underflow is 70.57%, and the yield ratio is 54.31%, which indicate that the minor diameter hydrocyclone is propitious to improve the yield ratio of the underflow. The semi-industrial dehydration system of hydrocyclone classified thickening process is com-posed of FX125 hydrocyclone, D3600 high-efficient thickener and D2000 thickening bucket. The capacity to tailings disposal can achieve 3.07t/h and the tailings can be thickened from 28.86% to 62.45%. Compared with the traditional thickening-filtrating process and the total tailings directly filtrating process, the hydrocyclone classified thickening process has the merits of simple flow and high thickening efficiency, so it is easy to be realized in the mine.

This paper presents the performance study of sag mill in the processing of gold ore. Deterioting ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the SAG mills. Today?s high capacity Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills expand vast amounts of energy and in doing so consume tons of shell liners and steel balls, while processing ore. Semi-autogenous (SAG) mill performance is influenced by ball charge, feed properties, shell, grate, and pulp lifter design. In the performance study of SAG mill, based on the results obtained it can be observed that SAG mill performed better at feed size +4 inch and grinding media consumption 0.90kg/mt. In the present study the effect of crusher bypass on SAG mill performance, an immediate drop of throughput ranging from 10-20tph is observed. One of the important technological challenges facing the iron ore industry in India is to find commercially viable technologies to process alumina rich iron ore fines and slimes. The key to solving this problem lies in developing selective reagents for the separation of iron oxide minerals from associated gangue minerals like quartz, gibbsite, kaolinite and montmorillonite. We present in this paper our successful results on the dispersion-flocculation of three different natural iron ore slime samples from mines in India using the reagent combination of PVP dispersant and corn starch flocculent. All the three samples contained hematite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite minerals as confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effect of various process parameters such as pH, dosage of reagents, settling time and pulp density was studied. We were able to produce a concentrate assaying 66.2% Fe and <2% Al with a yield of 67.4% by weight (with a recovery of 77% of iron values) using PVP (1 ppm dosage) and corn starch (20 ppm) for one of the slime sample (Sample I) assaying 58.2% iron (Fe) and 3.8% aluminium (Al). The XRD analysis of settled and dispersed fractions revealed that alumina-containing minerals like clay and gibbsite mostly remain in the dispersed phase while iron-bearing minerals tend to concentrate in the flocculated fraction. Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is continuously engaged in reduction of energy consumption at SAIL plants by implementing innovative and new concepts. In this regard, continuous efforts are being made to recover waste heat in Sinter Plants. This paper discusses existing waste heat recovery measures taken and proposed measures planned in Sinter Plants. One such effort is on waste heat recovery from sinter coolers. Hot sinter is discharged to the crusher at the end of the sinter machine at a temperature of 500 to 800°C. Temperature of hot sinter is brought down to nearly 100°C in the sinter cooler with air-cooling. The air after cooling the sinter is generally discharged to the atmosphere at about 225 to 300°C. It is planned to recover heat from the hot air that is being released to atmosphere and heat the process water, which is being added at ambient temperature in mixing drum at Bhilai Steel Plant. The temperature of raw sinter mix will be raised by addition of this hot water, which will help in improving the productivity of sinter machine. It is estimated that Waste heat recovery to the tune of 1.5 to 2.0 Gcal/h is possible with reduction in CO2 emissions in the range of 4000 to 5000 ton/year. The novel approach that is being adopted is addition of hot water in mixing drum for higher sinter productivity for the first time in India. "The objective of this project was to investigate the application of Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology to provide real-time on-belt elemental analysis of feed ore in base metal sulphide processing, in this case at the Mount Isa Mines Zinc-Lead Concentrator Heavy Medium Plant (HMP). After initial exploratory testwork proved successful, a Geoscan On-Belt Elemental Analyser was retrofitted onto the existing HMP feed conveyor. Dynamic calibration of the Geoscan was conducted based on laboratory XRF analysis results of the HMP feed conveyor hammer autosampler samples from May to November 2013. Comparison of the Geoscan results to the laboratory XRF analysis results during and after dynamic calibration indicated the technology had acceptable accuracy to be incorporated into HMP process control. The variation between the two sets of data includes all primary sampling, sample preparation and XRF analysis errors as well as the Geoscan errors themselves. The Geoscan instrument precision must be calculated separately through a duplicate sampling campaign and independent laboratory analysis before extending the scope of its range of application beyond HMP process control. The expected benefits of integrating the Geoscan real-time data into HMP process control are optimised HMP metal recovery, improved cost efficiency and improved stability of the downstream processes (milling and flotation). Utilisation of the Geoscan will also enable improved feedback to mines on grade control and dilution, and provide additional information on individual ore types when fed as campaigns to HMP."

Until recently, in consideration of fundamentals of gravity concentration theory, all computations have been based on determination of particles? fall velocity in an unrestricted medium (hydraulic size). Meanwhile, gravity separation processes are realized under conditions of particles? restricted fall, when important and sometimes decisive role is played by interacting forces of particles, dependent on their varying size, density and shape, i.e., segregation forces. We have developed devices and methods for measuring segregation velocities of fine particles of various size, density and shape during their loosening in air or aqueous medium. Besides, to exclude influence of medium upward flows, loosening was provided by superposition of vertical harmonic oscillations on measuring cell. It was established, that maximum segregation velocities are observed at certain optimal acceleration values and amplitudes of oscillations; excessive loosening leads to mixing and worsening of segregation. Velocity of some particles segregation through others depends on particles? size, density and shape, as well as nature of medium (air, water). Absolute segregation velocities of particles in air medium may reach 1~2 mm/s, in aqueous medium such velocities are by an order smaller. Analysis of rare-metal sands material gravity concentration results showed, that owing to segregation process during gravity separation, fine-size isometric particles of heavy minerals are recovered into gravity concentrates more actively, than larger ones, but more elongated in shape. It is convenient and simple to estimate mineral grains? shape by extent of their oblongness, described as ratio of particle minimal dimension to maximum. Besides, mineral mixtures gravity separation results are directly related to extent of oblongness of heavy particles, recovered in gravity separation process, and also to root-mean-square coefficient of their shape variation. The performed research showed that particles segregation in gravity concentration process plays not a lesser role, than hydrodynamics parameters, and demands further theoretical inquiry and experimental studies.

We experimented with slurry which from one of coal preparation plant in Guizhou province and made researches on double hump gradation, one of critical factor of gradation technology, which can influence pulping character in the process of making coal water mixture (CWM). The purpose for it is to find the best particle gradation which can meet the requirements in concentration, viscosity, and stability for CWM. The final result is that the concentration, viscosity, stability of CWM can meet the requirement for industrial use while the rate of fine particle in the slurry is 70%~75% and the maximum concentration of 62%.

With shortage of sulfide nickel ores, laterite ore was paid more attention by scientists. Because its grade is commonly lower than sulfide nickel ores, laterite ore can not be utilized effectively be-coming the bottleneck of study. Leaching laterite ores from Yuanjing, Yunnan province, organic ac-ids show better selective than sulfide acid in nickel and cobalt recovery. Organic acid has low de-pendent on pH, keeping leaching capability even higher than 3. On the other side, when pH up to 2, sulfide acid can not leach laterite ores any more. After four kinds of organic acid leaching laterite ores, besides citrate, malate and succinate have good leaching and effectively selective capability. Especially, succinate has the best selective leaching capability of nickel and cobalt in four kinds of organic acids for latter anion purification and separation. Isolated from waste water with sugar, Aspergillus niger (zs1) has great capability to produce organic acids and vigorous growth. Laterite ores have been respectively processed by direct-leaching and indirect-leaching. Indirect-leaching gives a better result than direct-leaching. Extraction of nick-el by indirect-leaching reaches 44.3%, far more than that of direct-leaching. Moreover extraction of nickel at pulp density of 5% is higher than that at pulp density of 10%, reaching 63% in 11 days and extraction of cobalt also is 48.1% in the same period. Compared with nickel and cobalt, iron gives low extraction in solution, containing organic acids produced by Aspergillus niger .

"Due to complex mineral composition and fine ingrained nature concentration of iron ores deposited in Mikhailovskoye mine field requires application of wet magnetic separation to produce 65–66% Fetotal and 8.2–8.6 %SiO2, concentrate with 90–94% of material being –0.044micron grain size. Higher specific consumption of ROM, increase of production costs with concurrent reduction of output - those are inevitable side effects of desired concentrate grade improvement. Large-scale complex analysis and surveys have been carried out aimed at concentrate grade improvement with concurrent output increase. Classification of feed in hydraulic cyclones (hereinafter referred to as hydrocyclones) has been the bottleneck for improvement of processing throughput and concentrate output. Hydrocyclone classification efficiency is 50-60% and further improvement is practically impossible. Actual circulating load may achieve as much as 500-600% while the optimal rate is 200-250%. Application of wet fine screening has been considered to improve iron ore concentrate grade. Objective of this work is to design processing flow diagram for unoxidized ferruginous quartzites with implementation of wet fine screening. Large-scale tests have been run in Crushing and Concentrating Plant with application of wet fine screening stage. These tests included application of wet fine screening in 2 and 3 stages of classification to separate desired grain sized material; replacement of hydrocyclone classification with fine screening; application of fine screening as additional stages to concentration process and screening of final concentrate. Testing Methods. EXPERIMENTS AS WELL AS THEORETICAL RESEARCH HAVE BEEN APPLIED FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS WORK; INCLUDING MAGNETIC, GRAIN-SIZE AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS. MODERN ANALYTICAL DATABASE HAS BEEN APPLIED TO STUDY WET FINE SCREENING FEATURES, MINERAL AND PHYSICAL COMPOSITION OF CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS. Work Results: - analysis of wet fine screening application for iron ore concentration. - technological solutions enabling to improve slurry classification of fine ingrained low magnetic iron ore have been developed. - effective process flow diagram including fine screening has been designed based on the feasible and reasonable arrangement solutions."

"Clays are present in a large number of mineral deposits and are commonly found as gangue. Its complex chemical structure, characterised by anisotropic surfaces, makes its presence a permanent challenge for flotation operations, increasing the reagent consumption, decreasing the quality of the concentrate, and changing the rheological properties of the system. In this context, the main objective of this research is to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite minerals in the presence of clays by using guar gum, a low molecular weight organic polymer, which acts as a surface coating agent for clays. Clay Minerals Society provided the kaolinite sample and the chalcopyrite sample was purified from mineralized rock specimens obtained from Ward’s Natural Science Establishment. Micro flotation tests were carried out in a 150 cm3 Partridge-Smith cell, using compressed air as the gas phase at a flow rate of 80 cm3/min. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as a collector and a frother, respectively. The results showed that the use of guar gum improves the recovery of chalcopyrite in the presence of kaolinite because it induces the formation of clay aggregates that settle by gravitational effects, preventing the 'coating effect' and decreasing excessive collector consumption. pH played a key role in the guar gum performance, which was most effective at highly alkaline conditions (pH 11), where the copper recovery improved from 73% to 90%. The work has significant implications for the mineral flotation in the presence of clay minerals.INTRODUCTION The mining industry is continuously confronted with challenges that alert the sustainability of the sector. There is little availability of water, the grade of the deposits are getting smaller, and the gangue is becoming more complex. Usually, clays are part of the gangue in numerous systems, including copper ore, porphyry, nickel, platinum, etc. (Senior & Thomas, 2005). The structure is mainly composed of layers of tetrahedral silica (T) and octahedral alumina (O) that join in certain proportions: 1: 1 (T-O) and 2: 1 (T-O-T) (Theng, 2012). Also, they expose two crystallographically different surfaces: the faces, which tend to be negatively charged, and the edges, which carry a charge that changes from positive to negative depending on the pH (Van Olphen, 1977). One of the most common clays in copper deposits is kaolinite, whose structure is composed of an octahedral sheet of gibbsite bound to a tetrahedral silica sheet in the ratio 1:1"

"The electrokinetic behavior of EL Maghara coal has been investigated in the presence of nonyl and octyl nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy of different sizes with trade names of Triton-X100 (TX-100), Triton-X 705 (TX-705), Triton WR-1339 (TWR-1339) and Brij 58. The electrokinetic behavior was determined by zeta potential measurements. Zeta potential measurements were conducted by Laser-Doppler electrophoresis technique using zetamaster. The results show that the zeta potential of Egyptian coal varies with pH value, the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. It was found that the polymeric surfactants reduce the negative values of zeta potential of coal. The shift of PZC of coal upon deashing appears to be closely relevant to silicate mineral removal."

A new short combined flow sheet including high intensity magnetic separation and flotation for a rare earth ore in Maoniuping deposit, China has been investigated. Massive conclusive results demonstrate, that it is critical to separate the ore by high intensity magnetic separation prior to flotation for tons of slimes and nonmagnetic gangue existing. The vital technological parameters affecting flotation have been studied in detail. Modified hydroxamic acid is an efficient collector for bastnasite flotation because of its high selectivity. Flotation results also indicate high temperature that play an unfavourable role on the recovery as well as the grade of bastnasite concentrate, when the rare earth ore is floated with modified hydroxamic acid and sodium silicate depressant. Bastnasite concentrates, averaging over 65 percent REO at an overall recovery of 82-84% is achieved by the new beneficiation technology. "Tatasteel’s West Bokaro washery#3 is designed to deslime raw coal at 0.5mm; the oversize (+0.5mm) is beneficiated in dense media cyclones (DMC) while the undersize (-0.5mm) is beneficiated in froth flotation (FF) cells. Nearly, 80% of the raw coal feed reports to the DMC circuit consisting of four parallel streams. Presently, the performance of DMCs at washery#3 is interpreted by: (a) comparing the actual plant yield w.r.t the lab predicted yield and (b) misplacement of clean coal to middllings.However, the comparison between actual & lab predicted yield is fallacious given the fact that the lab predicts yield of the borehole sample while the feed received at the plant has different characteristics altogether due to the dilution during mining. To mitigate the said limitations, a quick diagnosis tool using the past data has been developed that will give a prediction of performance of different coal seams in the DMCs, inputs being feed ash to DMCs and stream wise feed specific gravity (coal & magnetite combined).The tool also will help in identifying the root cause on real time basis thereby helping the operator to take necessary corrective actions. The operator can intimate the mining personnel in cases of shale reporting to the feed as a result of dilution during mining. In events of higher standard deviations between the parallel streams w.r.t feed specific gravity, the operator can adjust the parameters accordingly to minimize the yield loss. INTRODUCTION West Bokaro came into existence in 1948, as an independent coal company, managed by M/S Anderson Wright. Tata Steel acquired the Company in 1956 to meet its requirement of metallurgical grade coal for Iron making. Subsequently, in 1976, it was made a division of Tata Steel. In 1974, when coal mines were nationalized, West Bokaro was exempted as it produced coal only for captive consumption of the Steel Works. The first washery of India was set up in West Bokaro. The business objective of the West Bokaro division is to produce clean coal at optimum cost for captive use in the steel plant of Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. The strategy is to reduce ash with minimum loss of yield so that quality of coal improves and yet the cost is beneficial vis-a vis imported coal. The primary product is the metallurgical grade coal for coke ovens, which converts coal into coke for use in the Blast Furnaces."

Beneficiation of the pyrite concentrate of the Kastomonu-Küre (Northern Turkey) copper ore seems to be attractive due to its high Cu, Co, and Zn contents. Pyrite concentrate were used in the experimental studies. Cu, Co, and Zn were recovered from the concentrate by the sulphatizing roasting, leaching and the precipitation using H2S. Sulphatizing roasting experiments were carried out in a rotary furnace and the optimal roasting conditions were found to be at 650°C roasting temperature and 3.0 h roasting period and addition of Na2SO4 of 3 % for the concentrate containing 0.58% Cu, 0.22% Co, and 0.04% Zn. Then, the roasted product was repeatedly leached with 10 g/L H2SO4 solution. Optimal conditions were found to be 60 oC leaching temperature, 2 h leaching period, and 30% pulp density. Leaching efficiencies for Cu and Co were over 99 %. The valuable metals in the pregnant solution were selectively precipitated by H2S as sulfides. Selective precipitation of Cu, Zn, Co was achieved by adjusting the pH and the temperature of the leach solution. Final metal recoveries of 99.20% Cu, 99.40% Co, and 95.60% Zn were attained. The precipitated sulphides are marketable products. Roasting gases with their 15% SO2 content are suitable for the production of H2SO4 and the leach residues can be integrated with the iron ore processing plant as they contain 57.50 % Fe, 17.70% gangue (SiO2, CaO, etc.), 0.04% S, and 0.06% non-ferrous metals.

"Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about 2 million tons per year. It is sourced from both sulfide and laterite ore, but currently laterites are becoming more attractive for nickel production due to the depletion of high grade nickel sulfide ores. Laterites are generally processed by hydro or pyro-metallurgy and therefore, pre-concentration of nickel before such processes is very important. In this paper the effect different physical methods (including flotation) on the pre-concentration of nickel in laterite ores will be discussed. The ore used in this study was a laterite from South East Asia. Nickel was upgraded using different methods such as magnetic separation, flotation and sizing. The effect of ore mineralogy on choosing the best strategy to upgrade nickel will be discussed. The findings of this project will help to unlock a substantial volume of nickel with significant value from laterite ores.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about million tons per year which has grown rapidly during last decades (Mackey, 2011). Nickel is sourced from two different types of ores, sulfide and laterite. The majority (about 70%) of the world’s nickel resources occur as laterite ores which are often complex, and low grade, and therefore expensive to treat using conventional methods (Xu et al., 2013). Today, nickel laterites are more attractive for production of nickel as the amount of high grade nickel sulfide ores has diminished (Janwong, 2012). Therefore more economic processes to recover nickel from these resources should be developed.It should be noted that nickel laterite mineralogy is complex, and nickel often presents as ultrafine inclusions in a number of mineral phases. Because of the low nickel concentration and variable distribution in these phases, effective upgrading by physical separation processes would be challenging. Researchers have tried to improve nickel laterite flotation recovery by using a number of feed preparation techniques. A summary of the nickel grades obtained using flotation and magnetic separation as reported in the literature is presented in Table 1. It can be seen that only minor nickel upgrades have been reported. Quast et al. (2015) have concluded that the complex mineralogy of nickel laterite ores makes it difficult to achieve any significant nickel upgrading by physical techniques, including flotation. They achieved 40% increase in the nickel content (from 1.0% to 1.4%) at a nickel recovery of 43% (Quast et al., 2015). Various attempts in USA, New Caledonia, India and Australia, to upgrade nickel in laterite using magnetic separation have not been successful (Quast et al., 2015). A recent comprehensive review on topics influencing nickel laterite flotation has shown that further investigations in the flotation of laterite ores are undoubtedly warranted (Farrokhpay & Filippov, 2016)."

"Beneficiation of the finely disseminated valuable minerals has been an important issue in the mineral processing field for decades. Treatment of the fine materials becomes difficult with using traditional gravity concentration equipment. To investigate particles behavior in a commonly used conventional gravity concentration equipment, a comprehensive study was undertaken in a plant, which only consists spiral concentrators as concentration units. Spiral concentrators require relatively coarse material to effectively concentrate valuables as well as offering greater simplicity for especially higher grade feeds. In the current work, chromite ore (d80 = 290 µm) was treated using spiral concentrators and the performance of spiral concentrators was examined. The design of the separation circuit comprised of rougher, cleaner and scavenger stages. The resultant fractions produced by each separation unit and feed samples were analyzed to identify the particle sizes, mineral liberations and chromite content. Grade and recovery comparisons were presented in size-by-size manner and the separation tendency of the particles were determined in varying feed rate conditions. The overall results indicated valuable mineral loss of the plant and alternative suggestions were pointed to reach the target values.INTRODUCTION Spiral concentrators are simple low energy consuming devices, which are generally used for pre-concentration of the minerals. They are cost efficient equipment separating minerals mainly based on density differences of the minerals. The adjustable splitters remove the concentrate as the remaining stream continues to move down the spiral. Separation on a spiral is achieved through a combination of forces that act on particles as they move down the trough of the spiral. The main forces known to act on the particle on a spiral are the gravitational force, centrifugal force, hydrodynamic drag and Bagnold force (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Burt, 1984). Since the classification in a spiral concentrator depends on particle specific gravity and size, the operation of spirals can be analyzed using size recovery or partition curves (Bazin et al., 2014). Spiral concentrators possess multiple design parameters for a variety of applications. The design parameters that govern the performance of the spiral can be identified as the diameter, number of turns, slope, pitch and the profile of the trough. For an efficient separation on a spiral concentrator, the properties of the slurry flowing on a spiral, ore texture, percent solids and flow rate play important roles."

The main reason of flotation process fluctuations is mixing ores of various properties from various sections of a deposit. Other, also important reasons are changes in parameters of facilities of technological cycle, as well as properties of reagents applied. According to estimates, instability and non-optimized parameters of flotation owe 3% to 6% of valuable component losses. Without ore averaging systems flotation process is characterized by considerable fluctuations of all input, output and intermediate parameters. Stab One more way is optimizing the process, providing for determination and maintaining optimal parameters of the process. In these conditions application of various mathematic models does not allow controlling the process by the way of action on input parameters of the process with further precise reaching required values of output parameters. More effective is to be application of flotation models for solution of questions of choosing and optimizing of automatic control systems. The work presented examples of application mathematic model of flotation process for estimation of effectiveness and choice of parameters of automatic control system that reduces considerably a stage of preliminary studies in elaboration, designing and modernizing automatic control systems.

In this study, approximately 3 tons of coal sample taken from thickener entrance was prepared by mineral processing techniques and cleaned by gravity methods. The samples were classified to 5 size fractions by wet screening. The size fractions of +1mm and -1 +0.500 mm were chosen for direct consumption or cleaning by spirals. The studies by Multi Gravity Separator (MGS) were carried out with the -0.500 +0.280 mm and -0.280 +0.020 mm size fractions where the -0.020 mm fraction does not used in the experiments. The clean coal fractions of +1 mm and -1 +0.500 mm obtained by classification were subjected to lower calorific value (LCV), ash and total sulphur analyses. The results were 4168-4946 kcal/kg (on dry basis), 31.01-38.54 % ash and 4-4.27 % total sulphur content respectively. The results of the clean coal concentrated by MGS experiments in -0.500 +0.280 mm fraction was found 5918 kcal/kg LCV, 19.82 % ash content and 80.47 % combustible recovery. The results for the -0.280 +0.020mm fraction were 6004 kcal/kg LCV, 19.19 % ash content, 80.47 % combustible recovery respectively. With reference to the above experimental results, pre-economic evaluation studies were completed and decided to construct an additional unit to the plant. Capacity of the constructed unit is 75.000 t/y which corresponds $ 2.600.000 income in a year. General Directorate of Turkish Coal Enterprises concluded to apply this project to the other coal washing plants in the country due to the successful results of this study and laboratory studies has been going on by MTA currently. Throughout Chile?s history, mining has consistently been a leading industry in the country. The 1990s marked the beginning of a boom in Chile?s mining industry, especially in copper mining, due to both foreign and local direct investment in the sector. Mining?s contribution to the GDP was 15.6% at current prices in 2009, and it accounts for 56% of the country?s exports. Chile?s copper market share reached 35% in 2009. The investment portfolio in mining in Chile for the coming decade has been estimated at 90 billion US dollars. The acute scarcity of human resources currently experienced by the mining sector in Chile will be accentuated in the coming decade as a result of this scenario of investments. The situation is, additionally, similar to the one confronted by other countries involved in the mining industry such as Australia, South Africa, Canada, and in Latin America includes, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. A study carried out by Fundacion Chile, ¨Labor Force in the Chile Mining Industry, Diagnostic and Recommendations, 2011-2020? shows the projected labor shortage for the operation of projects in the development stage, considering only the requirements of the process of extraction, processing, and maintenance. The demand, accumulated incrementally, will be around 115,000 technically skilled workers, professionals, and qualified workers. This figure refers to the operational work force, and does not include the human resources that will be required for the prior stage of the engineering and construction of the projects (brownfield and greenfield). The demand for technically skilled workers and professions for the stages of engineering and construction of the projects that have already received investments is estimated to be 190,000 people for the period 2012-2020. The peak of the demand for engineering is 2012, with a figure that surpasses the 12,000 professionals for all of the engineering specialties. The analysis of the formation of human resources at the tertiary level (where tertiary includes technical/vocational and academic degrees at the undergraduate level) for mining and related majors demonstrates that the programs are scarce with a bias toward theoretical contents and that they are excessively long (40% longer than comparable programs in Australia, Canada, and in OECD countries). The completion rates are low, especially in the technical-vocational programs, which have a completion rate of only around 30%. Finally, the rates of attraction of technically skilled labor and professionals towards careers in mining are insufficient to reduce the identified skill gaps. In the case of university professionals such as geologists, mining engineers and engineers in metallurgy, 80-90% will work in mining. In the case of graduates of relevant majors, that cover skills also utilized by other industries, not only mining?such as maintenance workers, operators of fixed and mobile equipment, etc.?the mining sector appears to be unattractive for reasons such as shift schedules, geographical location of work sites, and other factors. On the basis of the available diagnosis a strategy for the sector has been developed (Workforce Development and Skills Strategy) whose objective is (i) to define a Mining Qualifications Framework to identify the critical roles to be filled (ii) to start, with public resources, a ¨fast-track? training program to assure the availability of at least 28,000 operators (machinery operators, truck drivers, etc.) and maintenance specialists in 2015 (iii) to promote the development of training hubs for mining with learning technologies to train technical labor and professionals on the basis of world class standards (iv) to design and implement a campaign oriented toward the perception of mining as an attractive field of employment opportunity (v) to develop curricular innovations for tertiary education programs, on the basis of international benchmarks. Flotation of chalcopyrite and unactivated malachite with xanthates (ethylxanthate, butylxanthate, octylxanthate and dodecylxanthate) is studied in this paper. Minerals interacted with xanthates are detected by FTIR, and simulated by molecular mechanics. It shows that chalcopyrite can be floated with 4 kinds of xanthates, and unactivated malachite can?t be floated with ethylxanthate but can be floated directly with later 3 kinds of xanthates while characteristic absorption peaks of those four kinds of xanthates are all detected by FTIR on chalcopyrite and malachite surface. After simulating the interaction between xanthate and mineral, it shows that H2O and OH-can interact with chalcopyrite and malachite, and their interaction energy may be so called energy bulwark which must be overcome by collector when collector interacts on minerals; the two sulfur atoms in xanthate group interact with copper and neighbor iron atoms on chalcopyrite. It also shows that molecular mechanics results with logP of collectors can interpret the mechanism of xanthate-mineral on atom scale.
