"The Cigar Lake uranium deposit, in the Athabasca area of north Saskatchewan, was discovered in May 1981 by Cogema (Canada) Ltd., as operator of the Waterbury Lake Joint Venture.The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sandstone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surface.At the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25m and 105m. It has the shape of flat-lying /em 5 m to 30m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and lateral continuity from the information obtained to date. A well defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss'') has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-AI rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite). The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfa-arsenides of nickel and cobalt. Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and although no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, there may be locally a good coincidence.However, a combination of several methods proved extremely useful in interpreting the regional geology and defining the drilling targets within the favourable areas.Although the Cigar Lake deposit shows many similarities with several classical deposits of the Athabasca region, it is characterized by the intensity of its alteration processes and the presence of massive, extremely high grade mineralization.At the end of 1984, the global geological reserves estimated by geostatistics on the main mineralized ""pod"" of the deposit amounted to 110,000 metric tonnes of uranium at an average grade of 12.2% U, with a precision of 25% at the 95% confidence level."

Introduction The International Nickel Company have been pioneers in mine rescue work in Ontario. Following the fire in the Hollinger mine in the spring of 1928, the Company purchased ten self-contained oxygen breathing outfits, ten all-service gas masks, an oxygen high-pressure pump, life line, inhalator, ten cap-lamps with batteries, and a complete stock of spare and accessory parts. An instructor from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, came to the Creighton mine for one week and trained twenty men in the use and limitations of all equipment. Monthly training courses were commenced in the fall, and have continued to the present time. Of the original twenty men trained, ten are still on the Creighton mine rescue teams. In the meantime, and as an aftermath of the Hollinger fire, the Work-men's Compensation Board of Ontario and the Ontario Department of Mines established a central mine rescue station at Timmins. This was completed in the spring of 1930. It was then decided, in view of the great expansion in mine development in the Sudbury district, to build and equip a similar station to serve all the mines there, namely, Creighton, Frood, Garson, Falconbridge, Sudbury Basin, and Errington. An extensive survey was made and a central location selected opposite the Frood mine. The International Nickel Company donated a site, and the station was completed in the fall of 1930. The station is a two-storey brick building, 27 ft. by 47 ft., with a large garage adjoining it. The ground floor is used for equipment and for training the crews. On the second floor are living quarters for the superintendent and his family. The garage houses a closed truck, in which all necessary equipment can be taken to any desired point for training purposes or for actual mine rescue work, if and when necessary. The garage is also used as a gas room, where the men are trained in an irrespirable atmosphere. A gas-tight observation window between it and the training room enables the superintendent to see and direct the men undergoing training, weight exercisers and other devices being used.

"The 3000 t/d mill at Hernia Gold Mines Inc. was commissioned in March, 1985. By Canadian standards the concentrator is highly automated, however, unlike the retrofit systems in many other plants, the Hernia process control system was installed during plant construction. This paper describes the Hernia control system beginning with system development (justification, architecture, start up, etc.), proceeding to current applications (crushing, grinding, leaching, etc.) and finally discusses some of the short term objectives for system improvement.INTRODUCTIONThe Hernia Gold Mines Inc. operation is located in the Marathon area of Northwestern Ontario. Controlled by Noranda Minerals Inc. (50.1 %), the cost of bringing the mine into production was nearly $300 million. A unique feature of the mine development was the extraordinarily short elapsed time of three years from Noranda's initial involvement to the start of milling operations. Additional background information on this project can be found in the trade literature (e.g. Tinter (1986). Scales (1987).)The Hernia concentrator is designed to process 3000 tpd of ore and commenced operation in March, 1985. Figure 1 provides a general plant flowsheet indicating the major circuits. Typical annual production statistics are included on the figure and these have been extrapolated from the available 1987 year-to-date data. Larsen and Tessier (1986) have previously described the operational aspects of the mill.In a metaphorical sense, the Hernia concentrator is like the traditional bride, ""wearing something old (e.g. the cyanide leach process), something new (e.g. a plant wide digital control system installed during construction), something borrowed (e.g. crushers from Gaspe) and something blue (e.g. the cladding on the surface buildings). While the prospect of fully undressing this bride is of considerable interest, here we choose to focus on something new. In particular, we choose to examine the process control system in some detail since Hernia is one of Canada's more highly autcmated gold mills. The control system is of interest because it has received suostantial credit for maximizing metal production and minimizing operating costs. With reference to the latter, it is worthy of note that Hem lo reports recent operating costs of less than $100 U.S./oz."

"The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumedlate Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: mon-zonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group ofrocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr,Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or miningdistrict, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cuand Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1)porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfde deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, east-west, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolutionof the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic min-eralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magmamay have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. "The proposed classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical and economic parameters is designed to be used as a communication tool to identify for investors, bankers, and financial analysts the degree of risk associated with a specific class of ore reserves. The class designation identifies the degree of accuracy of the estimates for tonnage and grade of annual production volumes of ore. It thus enables decision makers to quantify the risks and uncertainties inherent to the ore reserve in achieving over-all economic goals and annual financial objectives.IntroductionDuring the evaluation, in 1980, of the Creede silver deposit in Colorado, U.S.A., as a potential bulk mining project, the authors were faced with the problem of conveying to senior management the risks and uncertainties that are implied by using common or conventional classification systems to categorize ""ore reserves"". The estimated numbers for tonnages and grade of the projected ore reserves represented the only entry for future revenue from the project. It was, therefore, necessary to convey to management the level of risk associated with those numbers when implementing further stages of development, and to convey what impact significant differences would have on the profitability of the project. The desire to quantify these risks led to a revised definition of ""ore"" and to a re-examination of the classification system of ""ore reserves"". Traditional methods for estimating tonnage and grade of reserves do not include a quantification of the errors of these estimates. The advent of geostatistical methods made this quantification possible. The proper application of geostatistical methods, with adequate geological input and a reliable set of sample data, is essential to its validity.Others have proposed a classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical parameters. Diehl and David (1982) recognized ""that concepts of proven, probable and possible have to be linked to the production rate or time horizon"". Royle (1977) had also addressed this problem. Forsyth (1987) pointed out that bankers are concerned with ""the probability that the variability will fall within a certain degree of accuracy"" especially for grade estimates, and would like to see grades expressed together with the error of the estimate at the 950Jo confidence level."

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. Au 31 décembre 2001, les ressources mesurées et indiquées s’élevaient à 159 millions de tonnes titrant 1,55 g/t Pd, 0,17 g/t Pt, 0,12 g/t Au, 0,05% Cu, et 0,05% Ni, pour une teneur de coupure de 0,7 g/t Pd. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. "Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Sommaire - Le gîte de sulfures massifs volcanogènes du Mont Fronsac Nord est la découverte de sulfures massifs la plus récente dans le Camp Minier de Bathurst. Le gisement est situé dans une séquence de tufs felsiques à grains fins interlités de roches sédimentaires (membre de Little Falls, au sommet de la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. La partie massive et la semimassive s’étendent du nord au sud sur 525 m et ont un pendage de ~45°E; le gisement est continu sur 600 m en angle de chute et son épaisseur varie de 2 à 20 m. L’importance de cette découverte tient à ce qu’elle est un exemple d’un gisement à fort tonnage nouvellement découvert à une faible profondeur dans un camp minier mature, i.e., un camp ou l’on ne croyait plus qu’il était possible de trouver un gisement près de la surface. Ceci ouvre la porte à la possibilité d’autres découvertes dans cette partie du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

"Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. Contrairement au Camp Minier de Bathurst, les roches volcaniques des hautes terres du sud-est de Miramichi constituent une suite calco-alcaline continue caractérisée par un accroissement du rapport Zr/TiO2 à des valeurs croissantes de SiO2, résultant en partie de l’assimilation progressive et de la cristallisation fractionnée de systèmes magmatiques superposés. L’effondrement de roches volcaniques et sédimentaires semi-consolidées dans des secteurs topographiquement instables est à l’origine des nombreux slumps et coulées de débris qui sont préservés dans le secteur d’Eel River. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Des forages ont par la suite recoupé des fragments plus petits, dont un claste qui a retourné des teneurs de 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag et 220 ppb Au. Le recoupement de minces lentilles de sulfures stratiformes dans un autre forage indique des conditions propices à la préservation des sulfures massifs."

In order to derive the population distribution of gold nanoparticle morphologies as a function of size, highresolution electron microscopic (HREM) observations and structural analyses were done for over 4000 particles (3-18 nm) grown by an inert gas aggregation (IGA) source using helium. To obtain structural features threedimensionally and not to skip high-contrast images, twenty photos were taken for each particle by changing tilting angle of a specimen holder in combination with the through-focus procedure. For the reliable structural determinations, HREM images and their tilting sequences were directly compared with multislice-simulation results for icosahedral, decahedral and face-centered cubic morphologies, and finally the population distribution of each morphology was obtained as a function of size. In the present sample, icosahedral particles were dominantly populated over the whole observed size range and decahedral particles with non-spherical truncated bi-pyramid shape were secondly dominant. Even though a large number of sampling has been done, few crystalline particles were observed.

"Land directly disturbed by hard rock mining activities in Ontario and Quebec was surveyed in 1974 as part of a country-wide assessment, (Murray 1977). Some 15, 000 hectares, or 5 7 square miles, are listed as having been disturbed by overburden removal, waste rock and tailings deposition (Table 1) in the region. That area represents sixty-eight per cent of the total area which ha1; been disturbed by mining in central and Atlantic Canada. Assessment of disturbed areas was undertaken using LANDSAT-1 and LANDSAT-2 satellite imagery. Certain limitations of the technique were recognized but the data obtained were considered a relatively acceptable assessment of the extent of disturbed areas larger than ten hectares.Approximately ten per cent of the land disturbed by mining in the two provinces has been reclaimed to varying degrees. Indeed, this proportion is correct for the country as a whole. As pointed out by Ripley, Redmann and Maxwell (1978), some of the land was disturbed long before environmental concern 01· reclamation were ever considered. In numerous instances reclamation will remain impossible until presently active operations are closed. Nevertheless, these authors feel such figures make it clear that reclamation has not been a high priority in Canada in the past. Canada is a vast country, and there has been little pressure toward efficient use of all land space. Most mining operations occur in areas distant from the country's population centres. Under these circumstances, therefore, the pressure to reduce the environmental impact of mining is much less than in the more densely populated areas of Europe and the eastern United States, where such activity can occur in or adjacent to large metropolitan areas."

"Washington State's diverse geological setting is reflected by its several types of porphyry Cu-Mo deposits. All are associated with calc-alkaline intrusions, and they range in age from Jurassic to Miocene.The largest is the Mount Tolman Mo-Cu deposit located in the Omineca Belt. It contains 2.18 billion tonnes of material averaging 0.093% MoS2 and 0.09% Cu. There are intermediate-size Mesozoic deposits in the Intermontane Belt. The Cascade volcanic arc hosts small- to medium-Tertiary deposits. Among these, of particular interest is the Sunrise breccia pipe, which has been explored over a vertical distance of 1000 m. It contains reserves of 64.6 million tonnes averaging 0.319% Cu and 0.071% MoS2 with significant tungsten values. The Glacier Peak deposits have potential resources of 1.7 billion tonnes averaging 0.334% Cu and more than 0.015% MoS2 and also contain tungsten. The Margaret deposit can be classified as a porphyry Cu-Au type; it has reserves of 200 million tonnes averaging 0.434% Cu, 0.0175% MoS2> 0.27 g!t Au and 1.92 g!t Ag. Drill intercepts of the North Fork deposit also show significant gold values.Mineralization and hydrothermal alteration of these deposits are typical of porphyry deposits, although some differences can be noted. The Mount Tolman molybdenum deposit contains topaz alteration zones and is transitional between a plutonic type and a Climax-type molybdenum system. Other deposits, such as the Kelsey, Mazama, North Fork, and Margaret, are low-sulphide systems that contain significant amounts of magnetite."

Abstract- The Key Tuffite is a thick (0.3 m to 6 m) and laterally extensive (-10 km) cherty, sulfide-bearing tuff unit in Archean greenstones in the Matagami mining district in northwestern Quebec. It lies at the contact of the Watson Lake Group and overlying Wabassee Group volcanic rocks, and is host to major Zn-Cu volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. The tuff component is highly altered and its volcanic precursors are not identifiable by petrographie means. The tuff is mixed with a volcanic exhalative component comprising chert, carbonate and sulfides (pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor sphalerite and chalcopyrite). The normative mineral composition of the Key Tuffite is 33% quartz, 28% sulfides, 16% sericite, 8% carbonate, 60Jo chlorite and 9% other minerals. In the vicinity of the Bell Allard and Orchan mines, the precursor tuff components are identified using immobile major and trace elements, as Watson Lake tholeiitic rhyolite (Zr/Y = 1.5 to 3.5, LaN/Ybn. = 1.7 to 2.8, Si02 = 72.5 ± 1.2 wt %, and Wabassee calc-alkaline andesite (Zr/Y =9, LaN/Ybn. = 4 to 8, Si02 = 56% to 65%). Immobile element computation techniques were used to calculate mass additions and losses in the conversion of the tuff to the Key Tuffite. Average net amounts of Fep3 (27% total iron), Si02 (14%), CaO (8%), S and K20 ( + 2%), were added, Na2O was removed (-2.8%), and MgO was over-all unchanged. Total net mass change was +63%, which comprises mainly exhalative additions, but also includes changes owing to hydrothermal alteration of the tuff component.

J. at which materials emit radon are of interest in studies of the sources of radon in mines. buildings. soils overburden and other places where it may indicate the location of ore or be a health hazard. Here J values were determined by measuring the radon concentrations by means of scintillation counters or alpha-particle track detectors in chambers in which specimens were sealed. Errors in the measurements due to leakage from the chambers. lack of secular equilibrium in the decay series of the radon measured, or the limited rate of diffusion of radon from powders or within the chambers were shown to be insignificant or could be corrected. Scintillation counter measurements are highly reproducible; track detector measurements also appear useable and may be made on many small samples using small, simple chambers. J measurements were made for uranium ores, drill cores, standard CANMET pulps. concrete and gypsum board. Powdering of ores had little effect on their J values.IntroductionIn the mining and mineral sciences, radon (222Rn) is of interest chiefly for two reasons: in geochemical exploration for mineral deposits its presence in soil. overburden and water in more than background concentrations may indicate the existence and locations of uranium deposits and, if present in sufficient concentrations, it is a possible health hazard in mines, mills and other places where people live and work. The latter aspect of radon's role has received considerable attention recently(1,2,3,4,5), and surveys of soil-gas radon concentrations have been used for some time in searches for uranium deposits(6,7,8,9,)."

"Induced polarization/resistivity and magnetometer surveys have been carried out over the Casmo molybdenite deposit in mountainous terrain of northern British Columbia. Molybdenite occurs in quartz-bearing fractures with or without pyrite along a zone of hydrothermal alteration and intense fracturing, believed to be a northerly dipping fault zone, within medium-grained equigranular and porphyritic quartz monzonite.The molybdenite-bearing zone is characterized by a significant resistivity low, a metal factor high and a subtle IP low flanked by highs outside the mineralized area. Magnetic trends, indicated by a magnetometer survey, generally parallel the zone and strike direction of the different intrusive phases, and have been helpful in delineating contacts and faults in the area.IntroductionThe Casmo molybdenite deposit is 6 km southwest of the asbestos mining town of Cassiar in northern British Columbia, at an elevation of 1,550 metres. Molybdenite was first discovered during the early 1950s and the first important exploration work was done in 1964. Between 1964 and 1971, about 25,000 feet of drilling was done by various operators, as a result of which 33.7 million tons of molybdenite ore was drill indicated at a grade of 0.123%. In 1979, Shell Canada Resources entered into an option agreement with the former operator, New Jersey Zinc Corporation. Shell completed 27,000 feet of diamond drilling between 1979 and 1980 and ha s reported 75 million tonnes of drill-indicated ore with an average grade of 0.13% MoS2• This paper is a case history of IP I resistivity and magnetometer surveys done over the Casmo deposit during 1979 and 1980."

"The Apex Mine is currently scheduled to be brought back into production by Hecla in the first quarter of1990. Its projected productivity rate will be exceptionally high for a small underhand cut and fill mine.The ore mined at the Apex Mine occurs within a pipe-like structure as a series of iron oxides containing both gallium and germanium, plus significant amounts of silver, zinc, lead, and copper.Ground conditions in and around the ore zone have dictated that unique approaches be utilized. To date, these have included a prototype 0.5 cu. yd diesel LHD, and the use of fibrous shotcrete in 4ft by 7ft headings, and the first pneumatically-placed cemented backfill in North America. Above all else, it is the combination of new technologies with a small and dedicated workforce which has allowed for the successful development of this ore body.IntroductionThe Apex Mine is an example of the typical small underground project. It has high grade, but low tonnage and is deposited in poor ground. In such cases, conventional planning and thinking generally results in an uneconomical evaluation and negative production decision. Fortunately, some unconventional thinking was allowed to take place during the planning and evolution of the Apex Mine development. The result now serves as an example of how such unconventional thinking can lead to the type of innovations described below.The job necessitated the development and use of new equipment and materials to execute a highly flexible underhand cut and fill mine design/pneumatic backfill concept, that must be constantly modified as different than assumed conditions become evident in and around the ore zone."

No single factor in modern civilization has played a more important part in the lives of our people than mechanization in industry and to it civilization owes much of its progress. In no industry has mechanization met more opposition than in coal mining, where ?the introduction of mechanical equipment has been opposed on many fronts for economic and social reasons. The term 'mechanization? as used in this report refers to the application of machinery to cutting, loading, and transporting coal from the face to the mine cars. During 1933, 84.7 per cent of the underground production of the bitu-minous-coal mines of the United States (1) was cut by machines, while in Washington only 17.6 per cent was machine-cut. Information in this report has been obtained from personal observations and from operating officials in the Roslyn-Cle Elum coal fields, especially D. R. Swem, manager of coal operations, and Thomas Murphy, superintendent, of the Northwestern Improvement Company, to whom the author is indebted for assistance. INTRODUCTION Although Washington coal-mining problems relating co mining methods, ventilation, drainage, and preparation of coal have been discussed in many publications, little has been published on mechanization in this region, principally because it has not been accepted generally that mining machines, mechanical loaders, and conveyors are necessary or economically adaptable to the variable and steeply inclined coal beds of Washington. Production of coal in Washington reached its maximum in 1918, when 4,128,424 short tons were produced; from that year, the trend was downward until 1934, when production was 1,383,103 short tons, the lowest since 1898; for the past two years, production has risen steadily.

"This paper describes a methodical approach to the estimation of the orientation and the magnitude of in-situ stresses. The study was performed at the Ruttan Mine, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. , a 6,000 T.P.D. underground operation, located in northern Manitoba, Canada. It involves an initial estimate to be made based upon: structural interpretation • virgin stress measurements conducted in other areas (world wide, regional)The verification of the prevailing stress regime was made by conducting CSIRO hollow inclusion(1) overcoring measurements. The current cost for a virgin stress determination is about $7000 per measurement(2) and the difficulty encountered in attaining a good reading is high. This paper will describe the analytical procedures employed at Ruttan in evaluating the in-situ stress magnitude and orientation based on three overcore tests. Abstract Earthborne vibrations from blasting and other sources, including rock bursts, can now be recorded effectively. The nature and magnitude of vibrations from various sources have been investigated and certain applications of the knowledge thus gained have been made. Vibrations from blasting have been measured on special equipment over a range from an electric blasting cap at a few feet, through the largest quarry shot in history to date ( 1,-362,985 lb.), to the first atomic bomb, in uew Mexico on July 16th, 1945. Laws relating amount of explosive to amount of vibration at different distances have been developed and tested. Special studies have been made of the effects of vibrations on buildings, particularly from the standpoint of possible structural damage. Recorded vibrations are used to study the effects of modern short-period delay shooting. It ?has been found that short-period delay firing is extremely effective in reducing vibrations under the right conditions, but with certain limitations. In quarry shooting, there appears to be a minimum number of holes below which vibrations are not appreciably reduced by short-period delay firing. In several instances this minimum has been near 7. Vibrations in the ground from rock bursts and the effects of mining in stresesd ground have been studied both underground and on the surface in a search for a rock burst warning system. Introduction Earthborne vibrations from blasting and other sources, including rock bursts, can now be recorded effectively. Analyses of blasting records have been yielding increasing funds of information of practical as well as theoretical interest. The nature and magnitude of the vibrations have been investigated with special reference to their effects on structures.

"A program of sampling in Canadian washeries was carried out by the Coal Research Laboratory (CRL) over a period of two years to evaluate the performance of various density separators in these operations(1). Operating data on quality and recovery of products, separation efficiencies and cutpoints for each separator type are compared with data predicted using computer models developed from previously existing data.The Heavy Medium Cyclone (HMC), Heavy Medium Bath (HMB) and jig models give predictions of recoveries and qualities of products for sizes coarser than 10mm with absolute value of error mean less than 7 per cent, whereas predictions of the Water Only Cyclone (WOC) model for -10mmfine coal are with absolute value of error mean less than 8 per cent. Although less accurate for -10 mm fine coal, the HMC and jig models produce predictions of recoveries with absolute value of error mean less than 2 per cent and quality of products predictions with absolute value of error mean less than 28per cent which are generally acceptable because more liberation in the fine fractions appears to compensate for any difference in the accuracy of separation, resulting in good prediction of the clean product. However, ash content of the actual fine refuse was lower than predicted. The difference is attributed to the highly friable nature of Canadian coals which tends to cause an excessive loss of coal fines to the fine refuse.A comparison study based on quality and recovery of products is made between the Dutch State Mines (DSM) models and the recently modified models, both produced comparable predictions."

"The Abitibi volcano-plutonic belt forms the major portion of the Abitibi lithotectonic subprovince in the Superior Province. The Abitibi belt is composed essentially of"" (1) approximately 2.7 Ga old volcanic and sedimentary rocks; and (2) gabbro, tonalite, granodiorite and syenite intrusions occurring in well-defined prekinematic ( synvolcanic ), synkinematic and post-kinematic plutonic suites. Most of these rocks are metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Regional multi-phase deformation affects the volcano-sedimentary rocks. Deformation was initiated as these rocks were formed, and peaked at the end of the Keno ran orogeny with the emplacement of granitic batholiths.There are 145 former and current mines in the Quebec segment of the belt. To date, more than 420 Mt of ore have been extracted yielding 1,600 tonnesof Au, more than4,000 tonnesof Ag,4,400,000 tonnes of Cu and 5,300,000 tonnes of Zn. Mineral production is concentrated in geologic domains that approximately coincide with the boundaries of lithotectonic domains. We have compared the geology and mineral deposits of different domains to illustrate their distinct metallogenic signature. Certain domains are dominantly gold-producing (Cadillac-Malartic, Val-d'Or, Caopatina), others are base-metal producers (Matagami and Normetal), while others produce both gold and base metals ( Rouyn-Noranda, Chibougamau, Casa-Berardi-Joutel).Gold is extracted from quartz-rich vein deposits (for example, Val-d' Or), sulfide-rich veindeposits(Cadillac or Chibougamau) and from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits ( Rouyn-Noranda). Base metals are generally mined from volcanogenic massive sulfide( RouynNoranda, Matagami, Normetal), although certain vein deposits yield base metals (Chibougamau) . Certain sectors are dominantly zincrich (Matagami, Normetal)."
