I would like to thank The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for inviting us to share with you some of our experiences in the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial minerals in North America. Cometals, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commercial Metals Company, headquartered in Dallas, a public corporation whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sales exceed one billion dollars. Cometals, Inc. is located in New York and specializes in marketing of chemicals as well as raw materials used in the manufacture of steel, refractories, abrasives, glass and ceramics. This makes us one of the larger regular shippers of industrial minerals. Many people are aware that industrial minerals need to be viewed and judged on the merits of their chemical and physical characteristics. In addition you are surely aware that close attention must be paid to the economics of these minerals to determine the appropriate value and competitiveness of the minerals or products delivered at the doorsteps of the consuming work. You may, however, not be aware that the handling and transportation of the mineral is of crucial importance, in fact, the transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the ores marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated and without getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

The Illawarra District, from 50 to 100 miles south of Sydney, is one of the State's important coalfields. It extends from Clifton on the north, to the Shoalhaven river on the south, and from the coast westward beyond the coastal scarp.For descriptive purposes, this area falls naturally into two zones:(a) the coastal belt backed-by the eastern edge of the plateau;(b) the plateau, westerly from the coastal scarp.(a) The Coastal Belt.A triangular shaped area extending from Clifton to the Shoalhaven river, composed for the most part of soft coal measures strata of Permian age, which, on weathering, undermines the massive overlying Mesozoic sandstones and causes the gradual recession of thecliffs.South of Wollongong, upper marine sediments and contemporaneous igneous rocks make their appearance beneath the coal measure beds and occupy the greater portion of the coastal belt.(b) Plateau Area.Extending westerly from the coastal escarpment is a plateau known as the Robertson Tableland, composed of Triassic sandstone and shales dipping gently in a northerly direction, and capped in places by Wianamatta. shales and r.rertiary basalts. This tableland is approximately 2400 feet above sea level in the vicinity of Robertson, and gradually falls to about 750 feet at Waterfall.The plateau area for the most part is highly dissected, rough, steep gorges alternate with sharp ridges.A large part of the northern watershed of the Robertson tableland is a reserve for Sydney water supply, and large dams have been constructed at Cataract, Avon, Burke, and Cordeaux.

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore has replaced the conventional product quality control batch system at Yandi with the Continuous Stockpile Management System (CSMS) centred on a fully integrated æcontinuousÆ stockpile flow from mine planning through to port reclaiming. With increasing tonnage rates, tight operational coupling associated with the original batch system caused production interference which achieved final product quality but in an increasingly inefficient manner. This innovative approach places a continuous emphasis on product grade control and takes full advantage of the most appropriate blending opportunities of the mine to port planning and production system in order to reduce the natural variability of the ore to an acceptable level. To implement continuous control, product variability throughout the process is classified as long-term and short-term. Long-term variability is best controlled through the monthly mine planning process which determines monthly grade targets while taking into account optimum mine development. In the past, attempts to control long-term variability were made at the port through selective stockpiling and reclaiming which reduced operational efficiency. Short-term variability is best controlled around the monthly mine grade target by daily mine production scheduling, train sequencing, stacking into port stockpiles of appropriate size and systematical stockpile reclaiming. The implementation of the new system has maintained customer accepted shipping grades and has provided significant improvements in resource utilisation, operational efficiencies and costs.

The variation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen utilization with the amount of the reductant in the blast furnace bosh gas was investigated for the No. 4 blast furnace at The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd.iron and steel works. Newcastle. The degree of CO utilization decreased with increasing CO in the bosh gas; the H., utilization increased with the H., content of the gas. Empirical relationships for CO and H., utilization are proposed.H2, is 3-6 times as effective a reductant as CO at present levels of CO (34-39 per cent) and H2 (6-10 per cent) in blast furnace bosh gas. H2, gas injection into the blast furnace is proposed as a means of lowering the coke consumption, and the economics of H2 injection are evaluated.

A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

There is a significant amount of historical mining and exploration information available. This information is often distributed throughout a number of reports or plans, available from a variety of sources, and in many differing formats. The ability to capture paper-based historical information in a modem digital format provides mining and exploration companies with valuable information that can be used in a number of ways; for example, reassessments of exploration or mining work previously undertaken, or used in conjunction with current exploration information.   The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, to present the paper-based historical information; highlighting some of the problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and any assumptions used. Secondly, to present the historical data in digital format, and demonstrate the tools available to analyse geological and associated information, and finally, to illustrate some of the potential future applications of the information, including mining optimisation, mine design and scheduling.   The Glenorchy scheelite/gold prospect has been used as an example. Within the overall prospect two smaller areas were selected. The Mount McIntosh and surrounding areas, focuses on exploration and surface excavation information. The Mount Judah area (State and Kelly-Taylor workings) focuses on underground mining and exploration information.

Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. In addition, the project has created jobs, delivered royalties and brought new skills into an area where previously there was little current mining activity.CITATION:Nilsson, K and Connelly, D, 2015. Mining is both a high risk and a long term business. This is dramatically illustrated by the fact that, on average, the explorer will expend over $30 million in a ten year period for each significant economic discovery. The time required to complete the exploration process is one of the most substantial commitments made by any mining company. For example the time lag between the implementation of an exploration programme and an economic discovery is variously estimated to take two to ten years. The ore definition phase following discovery currently takes between two and five years while subsequent mine development may take one to two years in easy situations and up to 8 in difficult environments. In most countries the critical path through the early stages is determined largely by technical considerations but in almost all countries the path through the later phases is dictated by the plethora of permits, licences and community involvement steps.

The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

Although the pattern of metamorphic zones south of the Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault is much obscured by polymetamorphism, displacement of the orthopyroxene isograd by the fault agrees with the displacement of a horizon of "banded aplite" mapped by Andrews (1922). A dextral transcurrent component of 20,000 ft is indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe east-west Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault (Andrews, 1922; King and Thomson, 1953), one of the major geological structures in the Broken Hill district, New South Wales, cuts across the general north-easterly strike of outcrops and fold structures of the Willyama Complex. The degree of shearing and recrystallization in its unusually wide crush zone and the manner in which adjacent rock units and structures have been dragged into conformity with its strike denote considerable movement on the fault. Information concerning the nature of this movement is of critical importance in the search for possible continuations or repetitions of lead-zinc mineralization south-west of Broken Hill.A transcurrent movement of 20,000 ft, with the southern block moving west, was estimated by Andrews (1922), who correlated prominent outcrops of "banded aplite" at The Pinnacles (north of the fault) and Big Hill (south of the fault). Displacement of this order, however, does not seem sufficient to explain the extent and character of the fault zone. Recent chemical and petrological studies of the banded aplites at The Pinnacles and Big Hill by Vernon (19B1) confirmed their similarity, but indicated an origin by metasomatic replacement of pre-existing folded and metamorphosed rocks. Every automatic citizen is an automatic recipient of a miner's right under the present Mining Act (Chapter 195), but this alone does not entitle any automatic citizen to mine for minerals on any land, even his customary group's land. Without complying with requirements of the Mining Act, any automatic citizen who engages in mining solely on the basis of a miner's right would be mining illegally. He would also be engaged in illegal mining if he mines on customary or other non-government land. Even if mining is legally pursued by an automatic citizen, he does not acquire ownership of minerals without first making the required royalty payments to the State.

Many of the worldÆs larger iron ore deposits are hosted by rock sequences of Archaean to early Proterozoic age. Most models for the genesis of these deposits are influenced, either directly or indirectly, by the nature of the atmosphere at the time of their formation, and more specifically by the presence or absence of oxygen in the early atmosphere. Since the early-1950s, the geological literature suggests that the Archaean atmosphere was æreducingÆ, and that it may not have contained significant amounts of free oxygen until ca 2 Ga. There are many different definitions of the term æreducingÆ, but the criterion adopted here is whether crustal iron was limited to Fe2+, or whether Fe3+ was also widespread, ie was there scope for redox changes in the state of iron? Significantly, major Australian banded iron formations span this period of inferred atmosphere transition, eg Mt Goldsworthy, Mt Tom Price, Middleback Ranges. Geological evidence for a reducing Archaean atmosphere is both ambiguous and controversial (see review by Phillips, Law and Myers, 2001). Many earlier ideas (eg no Archaean redbeds; all very large iron ore deposits being post-Archaean) have been disproved by dating, whereas other evidence (eg homogeneous detrital gold grains, inferred palaeosols) has not withstood geological scrutiny. The interpretation of some data sets (eg inferred detrital uraninite and pyrite in some Archaean meta-sedimentary rocks) is still controversial. In fact, some lines of evidence now suggest that oxygen was present in the atmosphere well before 2.5 Ga (eg sulfates in the Pilbara craton, carbon distribution in clastic sedimentary rocks). An oxidising Archaean atmosphere has important implications for the development of iron formations. First, the atmosphere is an obvious potential source of oxygen to stabilise ferric iron minerals. Second, reduced fluids in equilibrium with ferrous iron are commonly inferred to transport iron in solution to the depositional site. The redox state of the atmosphere thus provides critical constraints on the solution chemistry of surface waters, effective transport paths for iron and particularly on viable precipitation mechanisms. Iron formations developed from fluids in equilibrium with the atmosphere also have the potential to provide important constraints on the evolution of EarthÆs early atmosphere. If an oxygenated atmosphere is a necessary condition for the development of iron formations, then the Archaean atmosphere must have been oxidising since at least 3.5 Ga. If the redox state of the atmosphere is not a necessary condition, then the time distribution of iron formations cannot be used to provide constraints on atmospheric evolution. Given these uncertainties, models for the genesis of iron ore deposits of Archaean or early Proterozoic age should not rely on a reducing atmosphere in the absence of independent evidence and the alternative of an oxidising atmosphere should also be considered.

The Ministry, particularly through its operating group Crown Minerals, is committed to working with industry to achieve mutual goals and to obtain continuing investment in minerals and coal exploration and mining and an active New Zealand minerals industry.

The occurrence of molybdenite in a small shaft in the western margin of the Wuuluman Granite in central western New South Wales is noted. Full petrographic and mineragraphic descriptions are given of a mineralized contact zone between the granite and a basic hornfels.Mineralogical data .indicate a similarity between this mineral occurrence and other occurrences in larger mines remote from the granite.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. The makers were approached through the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, with the view of obtaining a few screens conforming as closely as possible to the 200-mesh I.M.M. standard, and in response to a request twelve pieces of screen were...

It is now becoming mandatory in Australia to rehabilitate ponded fine grained coal mine tailings, which may well have been deposited initially with no consideration as to how or whether this could be done nor to the costsinvolved. Of prime importance to the rehabilitation of tailings ponds are the bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the tailings. Since the tailings are fine grained, time effects will govern the self-weightdeformation of the tailings initially deposited as a slurry and the subsequent deformation of the deposit under the weight imposed by rehabilitation fill. The engineering properties of a particular deposit of ponded tailings havebeen investigated and its response to the placement of fill monitored and analysed.
