Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. Inaddition, the -20 micron fractions of the Boggabri (B2t) and Swansea (B8t,> were recovered and the former converted to a sodium clay, in order to assesE; the beneficiation possibilities. The Argyle deposit in the Kimberley region of Western Australia was the world’s largest accumulation of natural diamonds. Following its discovery in 1979, the mining of associated alluvial diamonds commenced in 1983, followed by the pipe in late 1985. Over the life of the mine to its closure in November 2020, Argyle produced approximately 900 million carats of diamonds. Argyle diamonds are distinctive in having a predominance of brown colours and rare highly-prized pink diamonds, which are a signature of the deposit. The 3D geological model developed from mining and deep drilling shows that Argyle is a composite pipe formed by the coalescence of several steep-sided diatremes, each with their own feeder zones at depth, that were erupted along a NNE-trending fault. The ~1.2 Ga Argyle pipe is comprised of diamondiferous olivine lamproite volcaniclastic rocks and intruded by sparse olivine lamproite dykes. The volcaniclastic rocks are predominantly comprised of unconsolidated quartz-rich lapilli and coarse ash deposits formed by numerous phreatomagmatic eruptions of olivine lamproite magma through Mesoproterozoic water-rich sands and silts. Post-emplacement deformation has tilted the orebody 30° to the north and regional strike-slip faulting has offset, segmented, and elongated the orebody. Recent significant modifications of the geological model resulted from underground block cave operations, producing several critical lessons learnt. Diamond grade and quality reconciliation issues warranted a geological investigation which resulted in the recognition of new volcaniclastic olivine lamproite domains with a broad range of diamond grades, including some very high-grade units. The new lamproite domains had a significant effect on the block cave mining and resultant recovery of diamonds. The new findings enable a more coherent and detailed geological understanding of the volcanic emplacement and paragenetic sequence of the Argyle AK1 pipe. Structural modelling of the deposit also played a major role in the block cave mining tonnage recoveries and daily operations. The re-examination of the geology of the Argyle pipe and the results of this new information reinforces the need for ongoing robust geological work both in the early stages of mining a deposit and continued during the life of the mine.

Tailings are generally deposited on or near to the mine sites, occupying the site area, and being an economic burden for mining companies. Tailings can cause several environmental impacts, such as leaking toxic substances and contaminating underground water, emitting greenhouse gases, and damaging natural bodies and wildlife. Geopolymerisation of mine waste effectively transforms mine waste into more valuable, environmentally friendly products. Geopolymers are inorganic aluminosilicate materials that are widely applied in the construction industry (Araya, Kraslawski and Cisternas, 2020). The high performance and the low-CO2 emission of geopolymers make this type of material potentially more desirable than ordinary cement, given that manufacturing one ton of traditional cement generates approximately 0.8 tons of CO2. This process is seen as a promising method for repurposing tailings and reducing the environmental impact of mining waste. However, the environmental impact of geopolymer production is not sufficiently comprehended (Mazzinghy et al, 2022). Moreover, geopolymerisation of mine waste can offer several economic benefits, including reduced waste management costs (Amari et al, 2019; He et al, 2022), reduced raw material costs, and potentially lower production costs. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. This study aims to demonstrate the potential environmental impacts of geopolymer concrete produced using mine wastes and industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS). For this, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was conducted on different geopolymer mix designs, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions results were compared to the ordinary cement. LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymerisation of mine wastes in various ways. One important impact category is GHG gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of the geopolymerisation of mine wastes via economic analysis (EA) to identify the key economic factors and trade-offs associated with repurposing mine wastes through geopolymerisation.

For more than four decades, rehabilitated lands in the Bowen Basin have been planted with buffel grass (Cenchrus Ciliaris), which is often used to provide rapid, stabilising and erosion reducing cover to reshaped landforms (Erskine and Fletcher, 2013; Harwood, Hacker and Mott, 1999; Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000; Naidu et al, 1997). Historically introduced to Central Queensland and encouraged by pastoralists in the early 1900s (Humphreys, 1967), the species has been extensively used by mine managers in seeding mixes (Coaldrake and Russell, 1970; Edye, 1975), and the invasive nature of the grass has led to the monodominance in rehabilitated areas of semi-arid Central Queensland. With 40 open cut coalmines in Central Queensland (Department of Natural Resources and Mines, 2015), a considerable amount of land is either disturbed mine footprint (156 200 ha) or rehabilitated (29 200 ha) (Dale, 2015), and the bulk of rehabilitation consists of relatively young (<30-year-old) developing ecosystems, with demonstrated biomass fuel loads up to 20 t/ha (Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000).Uncontrolled fire poses a significant risk to rehabilitated landforms that are located in close proximity to mining infrastructure, neighbouring communities, open pits with exposed flammable coal seams and flammable stockpiled coal resource. Mine lease holders in Queensland have the added responsibility of managing and protecting any endangered regional ecosystem communities, and flora and fauna listed federally under the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act 1999 or the State Vegetation Management Act 1999; as well as, any culturally significant sites such as scar trees or middens that are found on-site. Additionally, uncontrolled fire in rehabilitated landscapes poses a significant risk to mine site closure goals, with the potential to create altered states and stalled ecological trajectories (Grant, 2006). The Avebury nickel mine in Western Tasmania is a disseminated nickel sulfide deposit hosted in intensely metasomatised Cambrian ultramafic resulting from later Devonian granite related hydrothermal activity.Variable metasomatism of the ultramafic has formed two distinct gangue mineral assemblages. Less metasomatised ultramafic is comprised of fine grained black antigorite with minor disseminated chromite, magnetite and pentlandite. Intensely metasomatised ultramafic is altered to a pale grey or green, coarsely crystalline tremolite/actinolite and diopside assemblage with minor magnetite, chromite and sulfides. Both gangue mineral assemblages are frequently intermixed in ore grade mineralisation.The bimodal gangue of either serpentinite or metasomatised ultramafic presents challenges to drilling, mining, resource estimation and mineral processing as they possess very different physical properties. Mineralised serpentinite has a mean bulk density of 2.8 g/cc and the ultramafic skarn a mean bulk density of 3.2 g/cc. Physically, the ultramafic skarn is hard to break percussively creating difficulties in the crushing circuit and reducing mine development rates. However, it is non-abrasive and grinds readily, resulting in increased diamond drilling rates and increased mill throughput. Conversely the serpentinite gangue is softer and breaks easily resulting in accelerated development rates and crushing circuit throughput. However, its fibrous nature reduces grinding efficiency, increasing bond work indices and reducing diamond drilling rates.Predicting the ratio of serpentinised to metasomatised ultramafic is possible through use of the resource blockmodel, assisting mine scheduling, predicting mill throughput rates, energy consumption and grade control drilling rates.CITATION:Callaghan, T J, 2017. Coalmines, like any other mine, generally involve the classic three-staged approach to mining studies; namely concept, pre-feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility studies (Cusworth, 2012). Subsequent to these studies, and in instances parallel to these studies, the commitment to an environmental impact statement (EIS) is made in order to secure both state and federal development consent. In recent times, the sentiment to both mining and coal is changing whereby the traditional approaches to mine planning and economic evaluation is complicated by evolving environmental legislation, expectations and time frames. It is all too common to take shortcuts in the development of projects in order to create the perception of cost savings and expediting the delivery timeline. Atkins (2016) points out that: boards of so many small to mid-tier mining companies, and a few majors, focus on relentless project delivery too early in the project process, with so little time and effort applied to risk analysis and option development. Unforeseen risks can cost any timeline or budget far more than the effort required assessing and mitigating these. The Fitzroy River Aqua-Eco Health Project is a collaborative research project between the Central Queensland University, the University of Queensland and BMA. It is designed to assess the aquatic ecology and health of the streams within the Fitzroy catchment located adjacent to mine sites. The universities are conducting an independent sampling program expected to yield the most comprehensive monitoring to date. The project design incorporates in situ testing of water quality variables including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, oxidation reduction potential, pH and turbidity. Water and sediment chemistry incorporate testing for sulfate, suspended solids, nutrients and metals. This sampling is complemented by quantifying changes in the abundance and diversity of a wide range of biota, including microbial, macro invertebrates and fish.This paper will detail the program and highlight some of the particular difficulties in conducting this type of research in ephemeral stream systems. The University of Wollongong was named University of the Year 2000, for its work in preparing students for the e-world. Computer facilitated learning is being introduced into subjects throughout the engineering course. First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.

The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. Mine operators use grade control to determine the destination of each block of material in the mine. In polymetallic mines, grades are best expressed in dollars: the Net Smelter Return, NSR, per tonne. To estimate NSRs, geologists working on grade control develop models for each geometallurgical domain in the mine. These models may incorporate observations on the mineralogy and grain sizes of the material being examined. The site’s mill operators contribute to the models by providing geologists with statistical analyses that relate assay results and mineralogical compositions to metallurgical parameters, such as the rates of recovery of each economic metal to each of the concentrates produced, and the compositions of those concentrates. The team responsible for sales and marketing of the site’s products contributes to the NSR models by providing details of the costs of shipping concentrates to smelters and refineries; and by providing figures that are specified in the smelter contracts, such as the payability of the metals in each concentrate and the fees charged by the smelter. The mill operators also provide, for the NSR models, equations to estimate the rates of recovery of deleterious materials to each concentrate. Deleterious materials comprise mostly halogens and amphoteric elements, both of which reduce the efficiency of smelters. Furthermore, deleterious materials such as antimony and arsenic may be poisonous to people and to the environment. The sales and marketing team provide specifics of the penalties that smelters impose upon deleterious materials. These penalties may reduce NSRs by tens of percent, possibly to levels below the cut-off grade. Thus, in the blocks that are subject to grade control, mine geologists monitor not only the concentrations of economic metals, but also the presence and abundance of deleterious materials. The preparation and maintenance of models, to estimate NSRs and to assess changes in the levels of potentially toxic materials to be mined, requires close and continuing consultation between corporate departments. There must be strong communication of mine geologists with the mill operators; with the people who market the mine’s concentrates; and, should there be a risk of encountering toxic levels of deleterious materials, with the mine’s health, safety and environmental officers. This co-operation could require radical changes in the structure of many organisations. However, experience suggests that such changes can significantly improve the profitability of a mine.

Considering future water scenarios, as influenced by the increasing scarcity of water and the move towards sustainable process engineering etc, the closed water circuit becomes an important point of study in metallurgical operations, such as in milling and flotation. However, a deterrent in the use of recycled process water is often a lack of understanding of the effects of the accumulation of dissolved ions and other process chemicals. Recovery of the valuable minerals may be impacted by the concomitant complex mineral-pulp chemistry interactions. Literature indicates that these interactions are not necessarily antagonistic to process outcomes. Wet milling using steel media results in the dissolution of Fe from the media, the rate of which is dependent, inter alia, on the type of media and the chemical conditions of the aqueous environment in the mill. The pulp-phase interactions of dissolved ions with sulfide minerals may result in significant changes to the chemical conditions in the mill, which may subsequently impact negatively on the flotation recoveries. To understand the effect of these interactions in the context of the processing of sulfide minerals, this study seeks to consider the effect of three factors, viz mineral type – pyrite (Py) and galena (Gn) -, milling media of different compositions – forged steel (FS), 21 per cent high chrome and ceramic media -, and water chemistry, viz, deionised water (DI) and synthetic plant water (SPW). Ceramic media and galena are used for the respective control cases where the milling media and sulfide mineral contribute no Fe species. Using DI as a control case, a high ionic strength case is used to mimic the changes in water chemistry for a closed water circuit. Batch flotation tests are used as a diagnostic tool to determine the effects of these media-water-mineral interactions to investigate correlations between the chemical reactions occurring and chemical species present during the milling process and the ultimate flotation performance.

The global shift towards decarbonisation is driving competition for the extraction of critical minerals such as nickel, lithium, and copper. To meet this demand, new mines are being developed while mines approaching closure are being reimagined as sites of potential resources. This reimagining challenges how mine closure is being conceptualised. In the conventional case, when a mine reaches the end of its economic life, it is closed or put into care and maintenance until it transitions to the next land use, such as agriculture, native ecosystem corridors, solar farms or integrated eco – precincts (Murphy et al, 2019; Holcombe, 2020) (the authors acknowledge that unplanned mine closures have left a devastating legacy of contamination, safety and cultural heritage impacts). Extracting minerals from closed or closing mines will extend mine life and, therefore, delay relinquishment and transition. In this context, innovative technologies are needed to make mining economically viable. In the first year of her doctoral research on improving stakeholder engagement in mine transitions, Lee Zhi Yi has coined the term ‘mine life extension technologies’ (MLETs) to describe a class of technological solutions that optimise extraction of resources after a mine reaches the end of its economic life. Examples of MLETs include agromining (van der Ent et al, 2015), in situ recovery (Robinson and Kuhar, 2018), and reprocessing or reuse of tailings (Gou, Zhou and Then, 2019). MLET extraction offers several benefits compared with conventional mining processes, such as waste remediation, value recovery of minerals, a smaller footprint and less environmental impacts (Sellers, Picorelli and Salmi, 2022). What requires further investigation is the consequences of MLET implementation to host communities or community perspectives towards the proposed technology and subsequent delays in transition.

This paper seeks to establish an empirical relationship between the impact of mining technological innovation implementation and a company’s market value. The company’s market value is represented by its stock price. In a bid to ascertain the relationship, a stock price prediction model is sought to be established using the firm-specific factors impacted by the implementation of innovative technology. This work is performed under the watch of the prevailing macroeconomic factors. The background anchors in the understanding that the difference between the economic status of a mineral deposit and its uneconomic status lies in the level of mining technological innovation most prevalent at a given time (Hartwick, Olewiler and Preuss, 1986; Wellmer and Scholz, 2017; Wright and Czelusta, 2003). This is derived from productivity improvement, resulting in sustainable profitability due to technological innovation. Unfortunately, there is not an adequately established relationship that links this technological innovation impact to the share price performance of the mineral commodity company.

The steel industry occupies 14 per cent of CO2 emissions in Japan, and the sintering process is one of the major emitters. Since most of CO2 released from the sintering process comes from coke fine combustion, replacement of coke fines with biomass char as bonding agent is a potential countermeasure. In order to explore the effective use of biomass char, we chose char made from Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) as a sample. First, the char’s combustion behaviour was examined with varying the char’s particle size by means of admixing the char in alumina ball packed bed placed in an electric furnace. As a result, the finer the PKS char the faster the burning rate and reaching a higher temperature compared to coke fine. In addition, it is also concluded that the optimum size of PKS char was larger than coke fines. Next, the effect of different heat profiles on sinter structure was examined by sintering tablet made of chemical reagents. In this experiment, the chemical composition is designed based on sinter composition. By this sintering test, even at high temperature, rapid cooling is effective to make fine sinter matrix and fine pores, which has possibility for high sinter reducibility. Based on these two experiments, using PKS char as a sinter fine source has the possibility to improve sinter reducibility.

Vale is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Since the 1970s, Vale has been using reverse cationic flotation to remove siliceous impurities from its iron ores. Whilst this flotation process has operated effectively for many years, it suffers from the problems of high reagent costs and high metal loss.In 2010, CSIRO investigated the use of a reverse anionic flotation process for Vale iron ore. Batch laboratory flotation studies conducted on Vale samples showed significantly reduced reagent costs and improved recovery of iron. In this work, the flotation behaviour of the different impurities in the Vale iron ore sample using reverse cationic and reverse anionic flotation processes is compared. Coal dust explosions have occurred in coal mines across the world. The Mitsui Miike Coal Mine disaster in 1963 was an example of how this hazard was not managed effectively, resulting in the loss of 458 lives and hundreds of people sustaining permanent brain injury from carbon monoxide poisoning. Management of the risks for this hazard have been well documented and have been implemented in modern coal mines. A recent trend in some mines has seen the abolition of barriers on roadways on the basis that the risks are being managed by the current controls. These controls include stone dust application, trickle dusters, dust analysis and dust removal. A new portal and access drift was constructed by Concrete Constructions for BHPÆs Elouera Colliery, south of Wollongong.The portal area at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment is in soft colluvium material, underlain by highly to moderately weathered sandstone. The area has a well documented history of slope movement or slope creep and one of the main criteria for the design was to minimise disturbance to the unstable slope by limiting the excavation for the portal establishment. This was achieved by incorporating a sloped headwall and gabion wingwalls to accommodate the anticipated creep and groundwater seepage.Main features of the design process also included the provision of both primary and secondary support in a single shell application and the use of canopy tubes to provide support ahead of the tunnel face.The active involvement of the designer during the construction phase and the flexibility of the design concept allowed changes to the support methodology to be carried out as excavation proceeded.This paper describes the design process undertaken for portal establishment and access drift to cater for the variability of the exposed ground conditions along the drift alignment.

Three selected iron ore samples from the major bedded and channel iron deposits of Western Australia were analysed using a scratch test commonly used in the oil and gas industry. The portable commercial equipment dubbed Wombat cuts a groove on the surface of the sample with a cutter under imposed depth of cut and cutting velocity. The normal and tangential components of the force acting on the cutter are recorded with a high degree of precision (about 1N) at fine spatial resolution of about 20 measurements per millimeter.The intrinsic specific energy inferred from the scratch test measurements is found very well correlated with a classical measure of strength such as the uniaxial compressive strength, for over 300 sedimentary rock samples.The results obtained on the iron ore samples are comparable to those obtained on oil and gas sedimentary rocks. This method could provide an objective and semi-automated measurement of material strength and brittleness in iron ores that can possibly be correlated to the lump to fines ratio.
