Stawell Gold Mines Pty Ltd operates two underground decline mines within the township of Stawell. An active exploration program and commitment by owners to improving the ore reserves has led to an improved mine life and reduced operating costs since the purchase of the operation by Mining Project Investors and Pittston Mineral Ventures in late-1992. Over the past six years of operation a cumulative 1 150 000 ounces of gold have been added to the mineral inventory. An improved geological understanding of the orebody has evolved over time increasing the ore reserves and allowing the development of long-term plans for the mines future. This has enabled important capital decisions to be made providing the impetus for improved productivity and thereby reduced operating costs. Co-operative mine planning and mine geology utilising best practice geological systems have enabled the effective extraction of a structurally complex and mineralogically varied deposit within a rural Victorian township. Detailed metallurgical research has improved the function of an aged and poorly designed circuit to boost the mill capacity whilst also improving the metallurgical recovery. The combination of metallurgical expertise and an understanding of the geological setting enable an effective control of metallurgical recovery.

The recent advances in digital imaging technology, specifically around photogrammetry, have facilitated precision measurement in the difficult conditions encountered in an underground development mining environment. With the recent downturn in the resources industry, many mining houses have begun to focus on cost reduction projects and driving efficiencies. The application of digital photogrammetry has allowed greater insight into the development mining cycle and supported a focus on areas where efficiencies and cost savings can be achieved. Data collation, via digital image capture, can be completed with minimal disruption to the development mining cycle with analyses taking a nominal time to process and interpret. The result can be a stark visual representation of the result of blasting and associated activities of the development mining cycle. Many millions of dollars of benefit can be derived from understanding the impact of each component of the development mining process, with some of the biggest savings associated with conformance to drill design and the minimisation of overbreak during blasting. This paper will explain the image capture process, analyses and instigated improvement opportunities that were undertaken at a number of mine sites to improve efficiencies and drive savings in their development mining processes.CITATION:Klaric, P, Swart, N and Barnes, S, 2017. The BHP Billiton Cannington Mine uses paste as the principal method of backfill. The paste consists of mine tailings and cement. The pastefill process at Cannington includes a surface plant where the thickened total tailings stream is filtered using two vacuum disc filters operating in parallel. The filter cake is mixed with Portland cement in a spiral mixer to produce a paste at a specified yield stress and cement content. The initial system design only required paste to be delivered under gravity. In July 2001, Cannington Mine expanded to 1.8 million tonnes per annum. In order to achieve this, production commenced on five new levels underground, 350 metres horizontally from the paste plant. Due to the high viscosity of paste, this distance was too far to transport by gravity. Traditionally, paste has been transported only short distances (50 m) using positive displacement pumps, with very limited success. At Cannington, a conveyor was installed which was designed to achieve zero spillage into the environment. This paper discusses the innovative design strategies used to attain zero harm on the environment whilst conveying a material, which is difficult to transport.

Flash flotation is a process designed to remove coarse, liberated, fast floating minerals from hydrocyclone underflow. Irrespective of liberation, coarse particles would normally remain in a grinding circuit until they are reground fine enough to report to the hydrocyclone overflow. Additionally, minerals of high density also report to hydrocyclone underflow despite being fine in size and/or liberated because hydrocyclones separate on the characteristics of both particle size and density. Dense particles continually reporting to the hydrocyclone underflow can lead to over-grinding and the production of ultra fine particles. These particles exhibit slow flotation kinetics and thus are difficult to float in conventional flotation circuits. Therefore, removing coarse, liberated particles from the hydrocylcone underflow by flash flotation has the potential to improve recovery and can improve dewatering unit operations and reduce grinding costs.The impact on the overall performance of the flotation circuit by removing coarse, fast floating minerals prior to conventional flotation is not well understood. Ultimately, predicting the overall recovery improvement provides the justification for the installation of a flash flotation cell within the milling circuit. In the field of mineral extraction, complex technologies are being introduced in mines, operators/technicians rely on assistance from an expert (or more) in order to keep their machines functioning. Personnel with such expertise, however, are not always physically on-site. There is a growing need for innovative technological solutions to support effective delivery, just in time, of remote guidance between an offsite expert and an on-site maintenance operator. To meet this need, we have, as part of our Human System Integration project within the CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under (MDU), Transforming the Future Mine theme, explored the usefulness of a number of emerging technologies including: augmented reality, wearable systems and touch table interfaces. This paper presents ReMoTe, an augmented realty system for remote guiding using a touch table interface for the expert station and a combination of augmented reality and a wearable system at the operator end. In designing this system we were interested in exploring the extent to which it can increase the productivity and safety of maintenance personnel. This paper also presents Mobile ReMote, our recent development of a fully mobile remote guiding system. In Mobile ReMote, both the expert and the operator are using a near eye display and wearing a light computer in a back pack. The expert is able to guide the operator using his/her hands on the virtual display, while the operator is able to see the instructions on the rear eye display. Workers in the mining industry are highly mobile, a mobile expert and operator station will meet this need.

An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.

In the past 40 years substantial changes have occurred in flotation machines. This has included increases in mechanical cell size to 630 m3 , significant changes to flotation column aeration design and widespread use of the Jameson cell and other pneumatic flotation cells. Over the corresponding period there has been increased used of machine characterisation measurements to benchmark and optimise flotation circuit performance. JKTech maintains a database of industrial flotation machine characterisation measurements. The database contains over 4000 entries and includes gas dispersion measurements, such as bubble size, gas hold-up and superficial gas velocity, cell dimensions and impeller tip speeds. Data comes from numerous operating sites and commodity groups, including gold, copper, molybdenum, nickel, palladium, lead-zinc, platinum, silica, phosphate, coal and iron ore. Flotation duties registered include flash flotation, preflotation, roughing, scavenging and cleaner circuits. Measurements have been conducted on a wide range of flotation machines from different manufacturers. This includes forced air machines, such as Outotec and Dorr Oliver, and self-aerated machines, such as Denver and Wemco. The database also includes substantial flotation column entries, such as the Microcel, Eriez/CMT Slamjet and Jameson cell. This paper describes the flotation machine characterisation database and discusses the variation between different types of industrial flotation machines, in operating production circuits.

Process plants are characterised by variability of performance over a wide range of time-scales; reflected in fluctuations in metal recovery, concentrate grade, plant throughput and reagent costs. In turn, these fluctuations impact financial metrics such as operating costs and revenue. The primary cause of plant variability is variation in the physical, lithological and mineralogical characteristics of the ore fed to the plant. The variability of the ore is driven by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody, the mining method and mine production plan, the capacity to stockpile and blend, as well as the plant flow sheet and the level of plant automation. Whilst the impact of ore variability on process plants is universally recognised, it is rarely quantified in financial terms. Consequently, opportunities to reduce its impact are often overlooked due to the lack of a basis for a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to justify improvement initiatives. This paper will present case studies using production data from the Renison tin concentrator and a zinc concentrator. These case studies demonstrate that as the standard deviation of plant head grade increases (as a proxy for ore variability), plant metal recovery subsequently reduces. The metal recovery is then converted into plant revenue losses, to quantify the economic impact of ore variability. The Renison case study demonstrated that whilst a very rare occurrence, revenue losses were as high as 34 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. The zinc concentrator case study demonstrated that revenue losses were as high as 6 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. Options are available for reducing and managing ore variability in the process plant. These options include changing mining practices so that the ore is fed to the plant with less variability, more advanced process plant control systems and the use of predictive geometallurgical models.

An increase of 22 per cent in lead usage is expected in the European Union by 2050. During lead refining, the Harris process is a critical step in which a salt melt is used to remove arsenic, tin and antimony. During this process, the caustic salt melt absorbs these impurities, requiring regular evacuation before saturation. Current metallurgical practices for: 1) determining the end point of the lead alloy involve time-consuming sampling and offline analysis, and 2) determining the end point of the caustic salt melt are based on subjective visual observations by the operator. In the context of Industry 4.0 concept, automating these processes becomes desirable, as smart sensors systematically collect real-time data in an unbiased manner. This research focuses on monitoring the Harris refining process using objective methodologies. Two different methodologies are investigated. The first methodology focuses on electrical conductivity changes of the caustic salt melt as function of Sb content. For this study, synthetic and industrial samples are used. A lab-scale electrical conductivity set-up was built to accommodate the aggressiveness of the salt melt. Initial findings suggest a promising relationship between electrical conductivity and Sb content in the caustic salt melt. Although the results are preliminary, the study provides valuable insights by enabling real-time measurements. The second methodology focuses on measuring the electromotive force (EMF) in lead doped with Sb at pilot-scale. Multiple probes are reevaluated for their effectiveness in Sb measurement. Ultimately, a partially stabilised MgO probe with Ni as a reference, without cardboard and copper protection caps, yields promising results. A correlation between EMF and Sb content is observed. However, repeatability issues arise due to possible wire interference at low temperatures. The results underscore the potential of advanced measurement techniques in optimising lead alloy production within the context of Industry 4.0.

The detection and control of gas levels in mining is a continuing challenge for the industry. Standard detectors have many problems that could be overcome with laser based spectroscopic instruments, but to date these systems have not been suitable for mining conditions. This paper reports the development of a new digital data extraction scheme to modernise traditional cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS). CRDS is a direct cavity enhanced laser based absorption technique, which is used to allow the identification of an unknown substance by their molecular fingerprint; this unknown substance is identified by analysing the ring downtime of the light exiting the optical cavity. Traditional CRDS has many issues when analysing substances in hostile environments, or when multiple species may be present. This presents an alternative approach, called real-time CRDS (rtCRDS) that has the potential to overcome many of these issues and produces systems that could be used in the mining industry. The system utilises newly developed widely tuning quantum cascade lasers combined with improved optical cavities and novel digital data extraction to produce spectra over a 1500 nm range in a few seconds. The ring downtime measurements produced are accurate and have high sensitivity and maximum signal to noise ratio. This paper discusses the technique, illustrating the advantages compared to traditional systems and show real-time spectra for a set of molecules of interest to the mining industry. This paper also provided an analogy between this approach and that used in digital communications systems, and shows that this scheme is ideally suited to provide a network of sensors in hostile environments.CITATION:Harb, C C and Chalmers, D, 2015. Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. As mine head grades decline and orebodies become more complex, traditional mineral processing techniques and flow sheets to achieve saleable concentrate become more difficult to design and construct. Mines with lower quality concentrates or concentrates with penalty elements are particularly under threat. The economics of such operations are far more susceptible to metal price fluctuations, concentrate treatment terms and the availability of other, cleaner concentrates. Additional value may be realised for these orebodies through improved recovery by producing a low grade middling concentrate for further processing, in conjunction with a saleable concentrate.The most economic effective way to reduce impurity levels is to do so as early as possible in the mining value chain. Technologies such as fine grinding and fine particle flotation are well established as effective methods for impurity rejection in mineral processing. What is often overlooked is how a hydrometallurgical process could also be integrated in the overall flow sheet to achieve higher overall recovery at the mill. In the base metals environment, this is probably because hydrometallurgical processes are associated with production of metal, or require the use of expensive and toxic precipitating agents once the minerals of interest are in solution. These processes can be very expensive, particularly with rising power costs and poor economies of scale in capital costs associated with low production rates from middling streams. Glencore Technology (GT) has recent experience in the treatment of middling and low grade concentrate streams and also tailings streams to complement a concentrator flow sheet in a refractory gold and base metals setting. The value proposition is the isolation of a low grade middling concentrate from the primary circuit or the tailings stream for upgrading to an intermediate product with an equal or higher grade than the primary concentrate to allow blending for sale. This allows the plant to operate on a more favourable part of the grade-recovery curve while avoiding the expense of metal production. For existing operations this is particularly attractive since it can be added to the flow sheet with no process interruptions. "To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. Since the early 1990s it has been evident that electricity demand has outstripped investment in generation and transmission. At the same time, concerns were being expressed about the risks associated with the run down of the Maui gas field. It is axiomatic that the necessary investments firstly require a stable and supportive regulatory and fiscal environment, and secondly that such investments have long lead times. A unwillingness by successive Governments to fund the necessary infrastructure, however, lead to the profound restructuring of the electricity with the ultimate objective of transferring the investment risk from Government to the private sector. Successive power crises since 1992 result from a failure to put in place a regulatory framework necessary to provide the environment to allow the private sector to make the needed investments within the necessary timeframe. The electricity sector has now stabilised to the extent that the regulatory risks associated with generation investment have been reduced. This does not mean that risk has been eliminated, however, and both economic and environmental issues will continue to constrain investment in some power proposals particularly those in the South Island and especially any South Island coal or gas thermal proposal. This is firstly because of several very simple economic issues:  1. while the South Island may have significant coal resources it lacks a significant electricity market; 2. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, low cost hydro will price any large-scale South Island thermal out of the market which will restrict any large scale thermal station to a dry year and/or peaking load; 3. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, export capacity on the HVDC link to the North Island is constrained to around 964 MWe (and 482 MWe from North to South in dry years); and 4. construction of any new thermal plant in the northern half of the North Island will price any South Island thermal station out of the market. There are also significant environmental issues associated with the establishment of a large scale thermally based power station in the South Island. Because the South Island lacks any large scale economically proven gas reserves, the environmental constraints considered are those associated with coal production. A coal mine dedicated to power generation will have significant on-site impacts associated, in particular those associated with disposal of opencast overburden and visual impacts. These will, however, be partially offset by the relative remoteness of such sites to population centres. What cannot be offset, however, is the off-site impacts, in particular, CO2, SOx and NOx emissions, water disposal and acid mine drainage.

Draw control at Premier Mine is considered important to avoid conditions of isolated draw, which results in early waste ingress, compaction of the kimberlite ore and loss of ore reserves. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that the pipe is cut at a depth of 400 metres below surface by a 75 metre thick gabbro sill. All cave mining at Premier is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause early ingress of gabbro waste. Gabbro causes problems in the diamond recovery plant and the amount of gabbro sent to the plant needs to be closely monitored. Fortunately coarse gabbro fragments are easy to recognise in drawpoints. It was anticipated that only 85 per cent of available ore would be drawn from the blocks immediately overlain by the gabbro sill before excessive gabbro waste forced the closure of drawpoints. Data on tons drawn per drawpoint and loaded per LHD as well as the tons tipped per pass is gathered by the vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system and information recorded by the load-haul-dump (LHD) drivers. Draw control staff monitor drawpoints on a shift basis and record the occurrence, type and height of hang-ups. Information pertaining to the status of the drawpoint in terms of support, waste and availability is also recorded. A database has been compiled that has been used to analyse the overall pattern of draw control, the frequency of occurrence of different types of hang-ups, secondary blasting efficiencies and drawpoint and LHD productivity. The gabbro sill has provided a unique marker horizon that has allowed the arrival of rock from a level 100 metres above the production level to be recognised. Data shows that ore migrates extensively towards groups of drawpoints that are heavily drawn with many drawpoints more than 100 per cent drawn before gabbro waste was recognised. This indicates that an accurate mixing algorithm is essential for good draw control. Data on tons drawn, drawpoint availability, productivity and the occurrence of various types of hang-ups has allowed better control of the mining operation and provided data for planning future caves. In the BA5 mining block a drawpoint spacing of 22 metres, horizontally across the major apex, has still allowed drawpoints to be pulled to waste with no loss of ore. In the BB1E mining block the drawpoint spacing has been increased to 23 metres and no problems have been experienced to-date. Future initiatives centre on improving the data gathering integrity of the vehicle monitoring and control system and a linear programme that will optimise draw control and productivity.

"Ventilation models are invaluable tools for both prediction of routine daily ventilation changesin an operating mine to circuit performance expectations at the mine in 20 yearsÆ time. Arguably ventilation offi cers are becoming increasingly reliant on maintaining an accurate ventilation model with which to do their work. This paper relates to the practical assessment of the accuracy and thus ability of a mine site ventilation model to be reliably utilised on such varied tasks. The author's experience shows that in some cases the incumbent model is found to be in a state of tune that demonstrates a mine wide detailed assessment of branch resistances is simply not required. The money spent on a detailed mine wide ventilation survey that is not required would be far bett er served purchasing much needed monitoring equipment, rather than fixing something that is possibly not even broken. The term ænot rocket scienceÆ has been incorporated into the title of this paper because it appears that many practitioners believe that circuit validation is diffi cult. As long as clear att ention to detail is paid to the actual data collection process then drawing an accuracy comparison between the circuit performance and the model performance at any particular point in time, is really very simple. This paper will show a manner in which a circuit can be analysed to determine its actual state of health by using various diagnostic tools and tips. It will help ensure that subsequent work scopes to address any highlighted model defi ciencies can be more effi ciently scoped and targeted. It will hopefully remind operational people that such self assessments can easily be done æin houseÆ if the appropriate steps are followed."

"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016. High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. Understanding the relationship between deformation events, fluid pressure evolution and the partitioning of strain is paramount in understanding the distribution of gold and for focusing on future target areas.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Blenkinsop, T G and Nugus, M J, 2013. St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012.
