The push for increasing coal production rates continues to place increasing demands on mine management to safely and effectively control seam gas. Gas drainage strategies applied vary in both effectiveness and form. Methods employed are a function of assessed risk, gas reservoir characteristics, surface and underground access, budgetary constraints and gas utilisation potential. With the aim of establishing and optimising the effectiveness and efficiency of gas drainage systems, Australian coal miners in cooperation with gas management specialists are embracing the use of gas reservoir simulators and gas emission models. This paper discusses the evolution of gas drainage practices in Australian underground coal mines and the role of gas reservoir assessment methods in optimising gas drainage systems and gas production forecasts.

The Thiess John Holland Group is undertaking the design and construction of Brisbane’s Airport Link Project, the largest single investment in transportation infrastructure in Australian history. Twin Herrenknecht TBMs are being used to bore parallel road tunnels from Kalinga Part in Toombul through to Lutwyche, a distance of 2.45 km. At 12.48 m, these tunnel boring machines (TBM) are the largest diameter machines, outside of Japan, to incorporate annular two-component type grouting through the tailskins.Grout design, preparation and injection have been given particular attention in this project in order to push the boundaries of achievement. Laboratory testing was conducted on various mix designs to ensure the contract specifi cations for grout strength could be met. To study the mechanics of the grout injection process, Herrenknecht supplied a test rig which duplicates the grout injection systems on the TBMs. Multiple recipes were tested, carefully selected to balance the requirements of rapid strength development with high mobility (to completely fill the void between the segmental lining and the ground) and minimal bleed.Team Mixing Technologies, Canada, was selected as the grout plant provider based on the technical performance of their high shear colloidal mill mixers. Field results have shown that the colloidal mixer prepared grout gives almost double the strength of an identical grout prepared by a paddle mixer.

Choosing a ceramic capillary action filter is often favoured in processes where low energy consumption is important, such as the dewatering of iron ore. In addition, the performance of the filter medium is essential, and the possibility to regenerate the medium is an advantage compared to other types of filter media. Although low, roughly 8 - 9 w-per cent for iron ore concentrate, and even cake moisture is the primary goal of dewatering, the introduction of better filtration processes can result in significant improvements of water economy and material efficiency.As industrial beneficiation processes are often complicated in their chemistry due to impurities originating from the ore itself, from the up-stream processing equipment and from the process water used, the characterisation of the filter media after usage might provide relevant information on what actually takes place during long operating periods. The aim of this study was to obtain new information on the fouling of fi lter media in an iron ore process to enhance and develop the regeneration process of the media in the future.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterise ceramic filter media used in the dewatering of magnetite. Principal component analysis and discriminant analysis were introduced to identify trends in the data. Two types of media blockages were found to play an important role in an acidic iron ore dewatering process: fouling by slurry particles and by in situ crystallisation of a calcium compound, of which the latter originated from the combination of process water and process chemistry.

The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

A research project to better understand the rock mass behaviour and the seismic response has been conducted during the design and construction of the 9215 level at the E-Block sector of the Northern Star Kanowna Belle Mine. The research program was undertaken at a tunnel located 1100 m below the surface with the results applicable to feasibility studies on underground mining projects in highstress conditions, where failure can occur very soon after tunnel construction. Semi-circular excavation shapes coupled with the use of de-stress blasting techniques were designed to monitor the excavation in conditions of very high stress. The ground support was designed considering high energy dissipation ground support schemes (HED) as described by Arcaro et al (2021). The results indicate a decreased rock mass demand due to the change of excavation shape. Also, localised reduction in rock mass stiffness was achieved due to the implementation of de-stress blasting. Finally, increased ground support capacity was gained by the implementation of the high energy dissipation ground support schemes. The Kanowna Belle Mine has significant ore reserves at depths exceeding 1000 m below the surface. The results of this research will be used to optimise the extraction of the remaining E Stoping Block at depths exceeding 1350 m.

The Eriez HydroFloat® is a flotation device capable of recovering significantly coarser and lessliberated particles than is possible using a conventional mechanical flotation cell. Originally developed for industrial and bulk mineral beneficiation, the HydroFloat® is attracting increasing interest as a means of increasing the required grind size for metalliferous ore flotation. Doing so would reduce the costs of processing complex ores, either by decreasing the energy required to grind the flotation feed or by increasing the throughput achievable with a given comminution circuit. Processing coarser particles would also result in coarser waste streams, potentially improving the mechanical and hydraulic performance of the waste dams that they are sent to. Recent work at pilot – and industrial-scale has proven the potential of the HydroFloat® technology to achieve these gains in metalliferous applications. However, in order to realise the full potential of the HydroFloat® technology, it is necessary to understand not just its performance but also the drivers for that performance. Doing so will allow the design and operation of HydroFloat® devices to be optimised for different ores and applications. For this work, a HydroFloat® pilot rig was deployed to a coppergold plant in Australia and was used to investigate the effect of stream and operating conditions for treating the tailings stream of one of the plant’s rougher flotation cells. Under each set of operating conditions, samples were taken of the HydroFloat® feed, tailings and concentrate streams, and processed to yield the grade and recovery achieved by the device. At the same time, the bubble size and bed behaviour inside the device were measured. This paper presents preliminary relationships observed between the operating conditions and the performance of the HydroFloat® cell, and thus suggests a range of possible drivers for the measured coarse particle flotation performance.

This paper discusses the use of a mechanised shaft sinking machine Herrenknecht Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM) – to conduct the 93 m presink for the Wira Hoisting Shaft at the Prominent Hill Mine in South Australia. This technology has been widely used in the global construction industry, however, this was the first time it had been used in Australia and the second time in a mining application. The non-entry shaft sinking system eliminates risks associated with a traditional manual method and allows all shaft construction operation to take place from surface. The geology in the upper 100 m at the Prominent Hill mine is conducive to mechanical excavation, with expected rock strengths below 130 MPa. This enabled an alternative shaft construction methodology to be considered. The Herrenknecht VSM system was selected due to its extensive work history and demonstrated performance in similar ground conditions. In collaboration with the operations and design team, the shaft collar and surface configuration were modified to suit the requirements of the VSM, additional equipment, and loading jacks that support the pre-cast lining. Dedicated concrete moulds were designed in Germany and built in Italy. The concrete segments were cast in Adelaide and road freighted to site. This paper outlines each stage of the presink – refurbishment, transportation, logistics, establishment, operation and demobilisation. Selecting this shaft presink excavation methodology, delivered through positive collaboration and communication despite some challenges, shows the benefit to the mining industry of applying new technology and innovation to improve safety and productivity.

Two quantitative methods for Mineral Resource classification have been applied to a copper skarn deposit beneath a large open pit that is mining a world-class porphyry complex. A drill hole spacing study (DHSS) using the single block kriging method (SBK) and a conditional simulation method (CS) were applied to the skarn deposit and the results compared. Inputs to both processes included the proposed mining rate and stope designs to estimate the likelihood of achieving grade and metal production targets. Mineral Resource classification of the deposit considers the relative precision of tons, grade and metal predictions over quarterly and annual production periods. These relative precision estimates are calculated at 90 per cent confidence interval (CI). The SBK method represented the production period as a single large block. Kriging estimates were performed in the large block for various synthetic drill hole grids, and the estimation errors derived. The error was assumed to be normally distributed due to the large block size and quantity of samples, allowing CIs to be deduced. The CS method followed a conventional sequential Gaussian simulation workflow where grades were simulated with a 5 ft × 5 ft × 5 ft grid node spacing inside mineralisation domains. Each realisation was then averaged up to monthly production volumes represented by a combination of designed stopes, and the coefficient of variation (CV) for the averaged grade was calculated. CI on the relative precision of grade predictions were then deduced from the CVs. The two methods produced similar results; despite being calculated independently. CS results were used to report uncertainty in the proposed life-of-mine plan and highlight areas for additional drilling. SBK results were used as the basis for Mineral Resource classification as this method has been previously applied to the skarn deposit.

Following an underground coal mine explosion, it is important that ventilation is quickly restored to ventilate the mine and affect a mine rescue. To achieve this, surface ventilation fans must be suitably protected from explosion damage, but still able to be quickly restored.A review of all Australian coal mine regulations was carried out, revealing that Australia has no prescriptive regulations that specify the design of explosion relief panels and the protection of ventilation fans in the event of an underground explosion.To better define the level of protection required, this paper reviews and extracts details from relevant major international regulations and standards on the subject.A suitable design methodology for the protection of ventilation fans is presented that could be applied in Australia, using a combination of explosion relief panels, appropriate isolation of the fan, and ventilation shaft/mine design.CITATION:Rafferty, T and Bourcier, R, 2013. There have been strong industrial observations that clay minerals have a deleterious effect on mineral flotation grade and recovery. However, rigorous explanation on the role of clay minerals in flotation and effective ways to reduce their negative effects are not available. In this study, the flotation behaviour of low quality and high quality coal samples were examined at the Xstrata Oaky Creek Coal plant, and laboratory in fresh and recycled water with high ionic strength. Anionic and non-ionic dispersants including lignosulfonates and triblock copolymers were also tested with an objective of improving coal flotation in recycled water. It was found that overly stable froth was produced in the flotation of both low quality and high quality coal samples in saline water. Speciation modelling indicated precipitation of hydrophilic components which may adversely affect the flotation. Despite the overly stable froth, saline water produced much higher combustible recovery than fresh water without significantly losing the product quality. Lignosulfonate dispersants displayed a potential to improve the flotation in fresh water, but not in saline water. A soil cover isolates potentially acid-forming (PAF) mine wastes from atmospheric interaction and thereby mitigates acid mine drainage. As a cover that comprises either a single layer or a composite barrier, it essentially manages percolating rain water from flowing into these PAF materials and minimises air flow as oxygen has low diffusivity in saturated soils. However, the availability of suitable soils as cover materials is limited, especially in arid and semi-arid regions where weathering rates are low.This paper investigates the potential use of mine wastes as cover materials in a water-shedding soil cover in north-west Queensland. Four cover trial plots were built using mine wastes as cover materials. Each 2.3 m cover trial plot consisted of a 1.5 m soil cover made up of waste rocks and fines, a 0.5 m drainage layer that consisted of 0.1 m waste rock aggregates and a base layer made up of blended mine tailings. The hydrologic properties of cover materials were determined by in situ measurements and laboratory experiments, which, in turn, were used as input in a numerical model that described the cover’s transient soil moisture profile. The successful performance of the cover is reliant on the long-term stable geochemical behaviour of the substrate used as cover material. Therefore, investigations were carried out to determine the geochemical properties of the cover materials constructed from benign waste rock using static and kinetic tests, with the objective to increase the level of certainty of the material’s benign characteristics. The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-west of Adelaide in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a design capacity of 8 Mtpa. The flotation circuit includes six rougher cells, an IsaMill for regrinding the rougher concentrate and a Jameson cell preceding the three stage conventional cell cleaner circuit.Since its commissioning, the Prominent Hill flotation circuit has been the focus of a series of projects aimed at continual performance improvement. This has been achieved by a systematic approach of project identification, evaluation and implementation which has led to a progressive improvement in flotation performance. Innovations that have been successfully implemented include aspects of cell design and operation, and reagent suite optimisation.Improvements to the mechanical cells initially focused on the installation of a modified rotor-stator design in the rougher circuit, as recommended by Outotec. Isolated cells were fitted with this technology and proven to provide a benefit for copper recovery before the design was trialled in subsequent cells along the bank. Based on this success, further modifications were made to other aspects of the rougher and cleaner cells.Laboratory trials conducted at Prominent Hill involve a screening process identifying potential reagents from a list of products, which are then rigorously tested in the laboratory before one is selected for trial in the concentrator. Where these reagents have demonstrated a statistical improvement in performance they have typically been incorporated permanently into the flotation circuit. The Mt Lyell Mine at Queenstown, Tasmania was re-opened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mt Lyell Mining Co Ltd. The re-opening followed over 100 years of copper and gold mining at Mt Lyell. Major changes in practice were implemented across the site. Preventing further damage to an already disturbed environment was a major priority. Sublevel caving, at a lower cut-off grade, replaced open stoping for the deep underground mining. Development and later stoping are handled by a contractor, National Mine Management Pty Ltd, in the largest underground contract awarded at the time. Large scale sublevel caving was new to Mt Lyell and not widely practised in Australia, requiring studies and systematic development of the method, particularly in drilling and blasting. Rehabilitation and upgrading of mine infrastructure have been and will continue to be a challenge. The mine has, since 1995, returned to being a stable producer with potential for growth.

Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Normandy Mining Limited, operates the Martha gold mine, located in the township of Waihi, New Zealand. The operation, an unincorporated joint venture, comprises Normandy Mining Limited (67.070/0) and Otter Gold Mines (32.94%). Since gold was first discovered at Waihi in 1878, it has formed a key part of the region's economy. In 1909 the Waihi mine was described in a report to Parliament as æthe most important gold mine in Australasia and one of the greatest in the world.Æ That was a record year for production, with 416,813 tons of ore mined and some 1,120 men employed. Today the mine produces up to 1,250,000 tonnes of ore annually, and the project employs some 234 men and women. In 1999 the value of the gold and silver produced ($59 million) made up 47% of Waihi's estimated GDP. Waihi Gold has made significant contributions to the Waihi economy, community and the Hauraki region as a whole. Since the mine was re-opened in 1987, thousands of local people have benefited from the mine. In 1999, consents were granted allowing an extension to the mine life (the Extended Project) and this will result in a further seven years of economic benefits resulting from mining activity. The Company has undertaken extensive consultation throughout project planning, construction, operations and rehabilitation. Ongoing liaison and involvement with all community sectors, including Tangata Whenua and Iwi, local residents, recreational groups and schools remains an integral part of the operation. Throughout the life of the modern Martha Mine, the Company has actively supported the local community in the form of donations, sponsorships, the provision of amenities, and by participating in community events. A well established environmental team exists at the site. Environmental and community performance is measured by an independent five-assessment process, and the Company is committed to achieving excellence through ongoing improvement programmes and staff awareness. When the mine is closed, the open pit area will be transformed into a recreational lake, and the tailings storage facilities will be rehabilitated to become a combination of wetlands, grassed areas and ponds. Resources will be provided by the Mine to ensure the rehabilitated site remains in a safe and self-sustaining, stable condition in perpetuity. The mine is regarded as a showcase on a world standard of how a modem mining operation can successfully coexist with the nearby community.

Inadequate goaf gas control may lead to gas exceedances in the ventilation return air, which will trip power in longwalls and cause production stoppage. To effectively control gas emissions, Australian mines heavily rely on drilling vertical goaf holes to capture coalmine methane before it migrates to mine openings. The wide application of goaf gas drainage may change the goaf pressure distribution, lead to more ventilation air leakage, and consequently increase gas explosion and spontaneous combustion risks. This paper focuses on analysing goaf gas drainage production data from a case study longwall mine in Australia. The correlation between suction pressure, total flow rate, gas flow rate and air leakage rate were analysed in detail as the face-to-hole distance changes. Suction pressure is found to be positively correlated with total flow rate, and their correlation also varies at different goaf locations due to various goaf compaction and flow resistance. This paper also proposed a theoretical method to calculate the goaf resistance of ventilation air leakage pathways. Based on several basic assumptions and different goaf drainage scenarios, the leakage airflow pathway resistance in the goaf at different face-to-hole distances can be calculated. The model results suggested that the resistance of air leakage pathways from the working face to individual goaf holes increased with the face-to-hole distance. The resistance results can also be used to calculate the corresponding permeability at the same position, which can be used as input data for CFD or Ventsim models.
