Ok Tedi Mine is located eighteen kilometers from the Irian Jaya border in the Star Mountains, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Sequential flotation concentrators produce a copper / gold concentrate for market, and a pyrite concentrate for environmental containment, with low sulphur tailings from the pyrite flotation sequence being discharged to river. Strict sulphur assay targets are set for the riverine discharge. Current porphyry and skarn ore blends from open pit operations at Mt. Fubilan will cease by 2017. However, drill cores indicate an economic ore body in the skarn ores surrounding and below the current pit limits. With proposed mining from a western pit wall ‘cut back’ and an eastern pit wall underground operation, potential for ore ageing in sub level cave underground stockpiles is apparent. With little information in the literature, Ore Ageing test work at prefeasibility level consisted of multiple one tonne stockpiles of -50 mm crushed rock. For the bankable feasibility study, a successful test work program was implemented utilizing 40 tonne ROM ore stockpiles composed of exposed pit extensions of future ores. Realistic ageing profiles of Skarn ores were obtained from one tonne monthly samples subjected to laboratory testing. Test work outcomes included:• Similar ore ageing profiles from both the pre feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility study (FS) programs, suggesting ore susceptibility to oxidation has greater effect in ore ageing than rock size for Ok Tedi skarns. • Laboratory rougher flotation of pyrite showed significant variation in sulphur recovery rate, suggesting three classes of pyrite floatability.• Laboratory rougher flotation of both copper and pyrite for up to 19 months ore ageing from 11 stockpiles, suggested three stages in the ore ageing process.

In almost all copper mining companies, mine planning is done considering different time frames, leading to long-term (life-of-mine) (LOM), medium-term (first three years) and short-term (first year, monthly, weekly, and up to daily plans). Shorter term plans are usually associated with more abundant information, hence models with lower uncertainty. However, they capture more of the variability found on the geological attributes. In long-term models, usually estimation methods tend to hide this variability, providing smoothed interpretations.Medium and long-term plans consider average values for the parameters and optimisation techniques are applied aimed at maximising the economic profit. Short-term plans, on the other hand, are made to comply with the medium-term promises, maximising the use of the available resources (equipment and processing capacities) and dealing with the variability not characterised in the previous planning stages. This generates an important gap between the short-term and the medium and long-term plans. A case study was made using an important oxide copper mine, where the variability found in the short-term plan has a large impact in the productive process, thus reducing the daily ore grade variability is an important goal. In this paper, this planning issue is addressed by creating medium-term mine plans using mixed integer programming which are compared using the output of a simulation of the daily extraction that is aimed at satisfying the daily constraints of the processing plant, the availability of mining equipment and the variability of ore grade. The result shows the expected gap between these mine planning processes, which suggests correcting some of the parameters used in future medium and long-term plans.

Platinum Group metals have been known in New Zealand since the 1880's but not produced on a large scale. They have been neglected because their value was not appreciated rela- tive to gold and their value was often very low, reflecting demand, and because recovery was difficult compared with recovery of gold. With the rising price of most Platinum Group metals and the perfection of gravity and flota- tion recovery methods, recovery of platinum along with gold from alluvial deposits is more attractive. Platinum Group metals are known in several different environments in New Zealand, ranging from alluvial placer deposits to layered basic to ultrabasic intrusions and quartz veins. None of the known occurrences have been ade- quately prospected and there is a real possibi- lity of future discovery of important deposits. Several New Zealand based and at least two offshore resource companies are currently involved in exploration, prospecting or mining for Platinum Group metals in New Zealand.

The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. A risk assessment was undertaken of the aquatic ecosystem and bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids in fish at the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa, Queensland. Residual contamination of metals and metalloids in Leichhardt River sediment was assessed and arose from mine practices using river discharge in the 1940s. The ecological risk assessment of sediments involved comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals and arsenic with those of the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ISQG). Results indicated that all sites including the background site exceeded one or both the ISQG-high and ISQG-low trigger values based on total concentrations. A lesser number of sites exceeded the ISQG-low trigger values following the 1 M hydrochloric acid extract step, which was used as an indication of bioavailability. An additional risk from particulate matter in river sediment is that acute human toxicity from the consumption of fish contaminated with metals and metalloids is unlikely. The potential risk was assessed by comparing with the maximum levels set by FSANZ (2010) for fish consumption by children and adults. In general, the liver of the fish have higher heavy metal and metalloid concentrations compared to the muscle. Frequent or regular consumption of fish from the Leichhardt River that exceed maximum levels (ML) of heavy metals and metalloids is not recommended. Over years of exploration the massive and tabular orebodies in the area to the South West of Western Areas Gold Mine had been assessed as containing about 50 million ounces of gold û a world class orebody. Planning initially was for a surface and subvertical shaft system to exploit this area but because of cost, a single lift shaft to an area which could be accessed ex Western Areas was planned to intersect the reef at 2760 metres. It was also planned to mine out the shaft pillar area long before the deep shafts would reach that position. This is not the normal practice in South African Gold Mines. The stoped out shaft pillar was backfilled to minimise movement in the shaft sites. The result of a competitive tender/adjudication process was that Cementation Mining û Skanska won and was awarded the R192 million contract to sink the Main and Ventilation Shafts on 15 June 1995. On 1 April 1999 Western Areas and Placer Dome SA formed a Joint Venture, which now owns and operates the mine on which the South Deep Shafts are situated. This situation prevails today.

The challenges facing the iron and steel industry on a global scale include depletion of resources, excessive energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The demand for iron products in Zimbabwe is increasing due to massive infrastructural development like the expansion and improvement of mines, transportation systems and water reticulation systems. In Zimbabwe, cast iron is mainly produced from recycling scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, which has resulted in the vandalism of state-owned properties such as bus terminals and railway wagons and lines. Nevertheless, Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores, which are idle, and it is the aim of this research that this ore be effectively used to produce feed for the blast furnace. The Blast furnace is still the dominant route for producing cast iron where sintering and coking processes are the main routes for preparing the Blast furnace feed. Sintering limonite ore fines produce a product of poor grade because of the high value of loss on ignition that has a negative impact on Blast furnace efficiency. Furthermore, the sinter plant and the coke making plant are a source of huge environmental pollutants. Since low-grade Zimbabwean coal fines are also available in abundance, they were used in the preparation of the composite materials ensuring maximum utilisation of this resource. Results showed that the limonite ore-carbon composite pellets sample with the binary basicity ratio (CaO/SiO2) of about 0.27 and coal addition of 2.5 wt per cent achieved above the minimum physical quality requirements for pellet of drop number of at least 4, a dry compression strength greater than 2.2 kg/pellet and an indurated compression strength greater than 250 kg/pellet. Limestone was used as the binder avoiding the addition of more impurities from bentonite since the limonite ore has a high SiO2 content of about 8.78 wt per cent.

The Managalase area is remote and little visited by geologists or prospectors. Yet it holds the key to the tectonics and petrology of this part of Papua. The eastern Managalase plateau (M, Figure 1) lies between the Hydrographers andesite volcano (H) and Sesara shoshonite volcano (S) to the south of Popondetta on the Papua Peninsular. It contains over 30 small volcanic centres in an area of only 400 km2 . To the south and west lies the basic-utrabasic belt (B-UB) of the Morobe arc. This is the leading edge of oceanic plate obducted over the Owen Stanley Metamorphics during the lower Eocene time. To the east and southeast lies the Cape Vogel geosyncline where the western end of the Woodlark basin spreading centre enters mainland Papua. The extension of the spreading centre as a suture might pass as far as the southern margin of the Musa Coastal plain. A new pattern of plate tectonic motions has been determined by the global positioning system and the southern margin of the Woodlark plate has been redefined (Tregoning et al, 1998; Taylor, Goodliffe and Martinez, et al, 1999). The Managalase plateau is margined by two inferred faults. These outline a cusp protruding from the main basic-ultrabasic belt where these rocks are near the surface. The westerly arm of the cusp passes through the centres of the Hydrographers and Mount Lamington andesitic volcanoes. Mount Lamington overlies Quaternary alluvium and underlying Tertiary sediments (Arculus et al, 1983) but members of the basic-ultrabasic belt crop out on the southern flanks. The easterly arm of the cusp is an inferred shear zone (and ? fault) connecting up with the terminus of the suture on the Musa coastal plain. Movements on the two faults forming the cusp are thought to have produced the conjugate N-S, E-W faults on the plateau (Ruxton, 1966). To the east, and isolated, are the two large andesitic stratovolcanoes of Mounts Victory (V) and Trafalgar (T) which together form Cape Nelson. Mount Victory was last active in the 1890s. The Waiowa shoshonitic volcano explosion centres (W), last active in 1943 - 1944, lie near the suture adjacent to the actively rising Goropu mountains. Extension in these mountains is clearly demonstrated by the soil profiles being skeletal along a bounding fault and ageing uphill. The incision of small parallel ravines also dig deeper further upslope from the fault. To the south-east of Mount Suckling (K) the Dayman Dome is also an expanding mass. The Owen Stanley fault is parallel, and located to the south of the suture. The Mesozoic metamorphics form the backbone of the Papuan Peninsula. The intramontane Musa Trough is thought to date from the mid-Tertiary. At the eastern end of the trough Pleistocene and Recent ultrabasic breccias and alkali basalt crop out (Green, 1961).

Iron ore sinter accounts for a large proportion of blast furnace ferrous burden in Chinese steel mills. Depleting high-grade iron ore resources and spreading complexity of iron ores in mineralogy and morphology have made it more difficult to utilise iron ores efficiently and economically. In this paper, the physical properties of iron ore particles were characterised using mechanical sieving, laser sizing and gas adsorption. From those measurements, two physical indices (fractal dimension of the particle size distribution and surface morphological factor) are defined as important variables for optimising the granulation performance of iron ores. The moisture capacity and the contact angle of iron ore particles with water were also measured to determine the strategy of water-feed in the granulation process. It can be concluded from the experimental results that an increase in the fractal dimension of the iron ore particles will lead to a better granulation performance, while an increase in moisture capacity with a range of 12.8 ~ 14.8 per cent would increase the optimum water content where the granule packed bed achieves its best permeability. Organisations are starting to develop processes for achieving sustainability principles they have defined for their organisation. The foundation for these principles is now well accepted. The definition of a sustainability framework is a good starting point for any project. The delivery of the framework requires the organisation to think differently about how project objectives can be met. New tools are becoming available to help achieve the sustainability outcomes for the projects. This paper will examine the project building blocks that are necessary to ensure the sustainability framework can be achieved for the project. These include new approaches to decision-making processes and evaluation tools and when to apply them. An integrated approach with shared expertise to project delivery, which is applicable to the whole supply chain, will be discussed. This will cover sustainability procurement, integrated waste management, cleaner production and eco-efficiency, sustainable products and disposal. A project toolkit will be presented and some key project tools identified. The need for management support in undertaking these new approaches is critical, as is the need to develop partnerships and cooperative management to facilitate delivery.

Sedimentary rock is a lithology that is commonly encountered in mining practices. Their properties, especially the resistance against weathering, are often of critical importance to long-term engineering stability due to their ubiquitous existence on the earth’s crust. The weathering of rocks is a complex process that involves physical degradation, chemical and biological erosions. In this study, the impact of physical weathering on four common sedimentary rocks, namely sandstone, siltstone, limestone and shale, are simulated in the laboratoryoratory environment taking into consideration the impact of preservation condition, temperature and time. In order to optimise the design of the experiment, Taguchi’s design of experiment method is implemented based on the L16 orthogonal array and selected simulation conditions. The weight and dimension variation, fracture intensity, slake durability, and uniaxial strengths of specimens are then tested to quantify the impact of weathering under various conditions. The results indicate that weathering significantly influences the strength of shale, siltstone and limestone but not sandstone. The impact of weathering on dimension variation is insignificant. For soft rocks, most physical weathering took place after second cycle of simulation, resulting in strength reduction up to 100 per cent (disintegration) but generally in a range from 28 per cent to 32 per cent. Additionally, time is the most important factor contributing to the physical weathering of weak rocks, followed by residual, preservation conditions and temperature. Last but not least, some shales, depending on the content of clay minerals, tend to develop significant fracturing or even disintegrate under the influence of weathering.

China is the largest coal-producing country in the world, while the geological conditions of deep coal mining are extremely complicated with high ground stress, high gas pressure and low permeability, which results in the difficulty of gas drainage and aggravation of gas explosion and coal and gas outburst disasters. Co-extraction of coal and gas is an effective method to eliminate coalmine gas disasters and realise the safe exploitation of coal and efficient gas drainage at the same time. This concept is widely accepted by the main coal-producing countries around the world, while the concrete definition of co-extraction is vague and not unified, and there is little accurate theoretical support for co-extraction of coal and gas, which makes it hard to determine efficient gas drainage methods correspondingly according to the features of coal seams in a comprehensive and systematic way. Based on theoretical analysis, laboratory test and field observations, basic thoughts and specific definition of co-extraction of coal and gas were put forward after analysing the occurrence characteristics of coal seams in China. We obtained the mechanism of mining-enhanced permeability and established the corresponding theoretical model, which is the process of fracture network formation through opening recovery of the original fractures and new fractures produced by unloading damage. Based on the core idea of ‘mining-enhanced permeability’, engineering approaches of ‘unloading by boreholes drilling’ for the single coal seam and ‘unloading by protective seam mining’ for the coal seam group were proposed to realise safe and efficient co-extraction of coal and gas. Meanwhile, combined with engineering practice, we put forward the construction principle of coal exploitation and gas drainage system in different coal seam occurrence conditions. The Hidden Valley process plant has recently undertaken a program to relieve process flow bottlenecks and improve process automation. An environment of cost reduction and restrained capital necessitated solutions that primarily utilised existing equipment and internal resources. Removing bottlenecks relieved pressure from a strained circuit that was unable to maintain consistent performance. Improved process automation firstly stabilised the process, then allowed the circuit to sustainably operate at the expanded capacity limits. These allowed implementation of an operating approach that focused process operators towards identifying and resolving process disturbances in advance. The Mt Wright underground mine (MTW) is located near the town of Ravenswood in north Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited.The Mt Wright mine has gone through many stages, from the conception and implementation of the world first ‘sub-level shrinkage’ stoping (SLS) with continuous fill mining method in 2010, through to steady state production. These have been outlined in detail in papers presented by Mackay (2011) and Mackay, Long and Koen (2014) at previous Underground Operators Conferences.Since the last paper was presented, MTW has experienced significant change in two key areas.The first significant change was the discovery of a previously unknown hazard in the form of flat rilling events (FREs) from closed drawpoints (DPs). These events are believed to be unique to MTW and pose a significant risk to both the safety of personnel and the business as a whole. The paper will discuss this hazard and the evolution of the controls and practices that have been introduced to mitigate the risk posed by the identified hazards. The material involved in these events is extremely dry, fine and hot.The second significant change is an altered stress regime bought on in part by a change in the production front orientation and a general deterioration in ground conditions in some areas of the mine. This has caused some production interruptions at MTW. The second half of the paper will describe the challenges encountered, the mechanisms behind these challenges and the strategies implemented to safely return MTW production to planned levels.It is believed that other operations can learn from the issues mentioned above, and the paper has been written with this in mind.`CITATION:Long, S, Carnovale, D and Louwrens, L, 2017. The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

This paper presents the numerical simulation of mine backfilling in underground stopes using three-dimensional discrete element modelling (DEM). The simulation predicts the forces exerted at the stope base and barricade with respect to time under free drained conditions. The results of the numerical simulation are validated using basic analytical solutions and advanced experimental tests involving a geotechnical centrifuge system. Overall, a good agreement between the present numerical simulations and the existing experimental and analytical results was found. The present model suggests that DEM is a promising computational tool to predict barricade pressure in underground mine stopes.CITATION:Hasan, A and Karrech, A, 2014. Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

Mine and facility closure planning is a dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape. In this landscape, mining companies and industry consultants are generally good at estimating the associated earthworks and rehabilitation costs, because it is æcore businessÆ. Through our extensive work in mine closure, we have found that the safe and cost-effective demolition of mining related infrastructure is often grossly underestimated. Or alternately, it is simply assumed that the returns on scrap steel and the sale of re-usable plant will cover the related costs. With fluctuating steel prices and no guaranteed buyer for the assets, the estimated monetary return is often unreliable and in many cases unrealistic. On this basis this logic is fundamentally flawed. We have found that on most occasions this has meant that closure cost estimates fall well short of what the actual costs are to close the mine.GSSE and Liberty Industrial have worked on over 60 mine closure projects in Australia and overseas of varying scales and across a range of commodity types. An evaluation of these projects has shown that costs associated with the safe demolition and removal of a mining related infrastructure is in the order of 20 - 30 per cent of the total cost at closure. We believe it is one of the top three risk areas associated with mine closure planning and cost estimation, alongside bulk earthworks and the capping of tailings and waste rock storage facilities.Our paper uses examples from recent projects to demonstrate all aspects outlined above. We have also endeavoured to address the following key points related to the demolition and removal of mining related infrastructure:If companies fail to plan appropriately, complicating factors such as contamination, hazardous materials, mobilisation/demobilisation, geographical location, decommissioning standards, site constraints and weather, can add considerable costs to the project and result in variations for the demolition contractor.Closure planning often assumes infrastructure that is no longer required can be utilised by a third party and/or the new land holder. A likely increasingly important pathway for future low-carbon ironmaking and steelmaking is the combination of gas-based direct reduction with electric furnace steelmaking (DRI-EAF route), or with electric smelting (DRI-ESF route). In the DRI-EAF route, the gangue that is present in the iron ore is fluxed and removed as slag in the melting (steelmaking) step. This is in contrast with integrated steelmaking, in which the gangue is removed as part of blast furnace ironmaking. For DRI-EAF steelmaking, the amount and composition of slag depend on the iron ore composition, flux additions and iron yield. Slag volume and composition affect phosphorus removal, foaming behaviour and the process energy requirements. In this work, heat data from a year of DRI-EAF production was analysed to test whether the expected relationship between slag volume and electricity consumption for EAF steelmaking was observed. The data include slag analyses (one sample per shift), and heatlevel information on all inputs, final steel temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration, electricity consumption, tapped steel mass and tap-to-tap time. In analysing the data, the slag volume was estimated from the assayed slag CaO concentration and CaO inputs to the EAF. The expected effect of slag volume on steelmaking energy consumption was calculated with a mass and energy balance, considering the heat of mixing of the slag. The calculated energy requirement of slag formation is in line with previous estimates reported in the literature.
