The paper deals with the effect of sodium polysulphides in chrysocolla flotation. Activity of elementary sulphur adsorption on the mineral surface is discussed. The mechanism of polysulphide action in the process of sulphidisation and formation of sulphur on the mineral surface is proposed. Sodium pentasulphide is shown to be the most effective modifier of chrysocolla flotation.

Lime is the common reagent used for pH control in cyanide gold circuits. Lime can be supplied as either quicklime (CaO) or 'hydrated lime(Ca(OH)2). Both are dry powders with variable flow properties. These properties demand special attention when designing machin- ery to handle them.

Traditional methods for calibrating the most customisable forms of GyÆs formula for the prediction of sampling variances involve a large amount of experimental work. This work is often extremely sensitive to outlier treatment and often relies on assumptions. A general methodology called æthe consistency methodÆ, however, has proven efficient in guiding these critical steps and adding objectivity to these subjective tasks. After a quick exposition of its principle, it is shown how it can also be used to reduce the amount of experimental work when dictated by budgets.

The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.

In order to realise seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining, the environmental baseline survey around targeted SMS mining areas and the creation of an environmental assessment technique suitable for quantifying the impacts of ocean floor mining are necessary. The targeted areas generally host large chemosynthetic communities in association with active hydrothermal venting. The ecosystem structure around the chemosynthetic communities has not been clarified yet in macro-scale or quantitatively. The systematic approach and plan for the baseline survey and the environmental assessmentÆs basic studies are introduced. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Tamrock all-hydraulic rock drilling system 400 has been developed to cover as wide a drilling range as possible, from 35 mm holes in tunnelling, roofbolting and development work to 64mm holes in long hole production drilling. Field experience during the last five years shows that the Tamrock drill covers this range in a way that no other rock drill on the market does and recently the range has been success- fully further expanded to cover bench drilling with 76 mm holes.

This symposium is a great opportunity to look at the present state of the art and full marks must go to the Sydney Branch for organi- sing it at this time. The principles of occupational risk evaluation resulting from the improper ventilation of the underground mines were presented. It was shown that the risk level implies the appropriate planning and usage of prevention methods. That approach is fundamental in the ventilation, fire and climate safety management in the copper ore mines. The paper uses the adequately modified Risk Score method.

The Paracale gold region had been known for hundreds of years, but the first professional attempts to work the lode and alluvial deposits were made only in the 1890s by the London-based Philippines Mineral Syndicate. Complex ores, transportation problems, and the Philippine Insurrection halted operations. Ultimate success went to American firms, though Frank Karuth's Philippines Mineral Syndicate had pioneered the field.

The Ertsberg (Gunung Bijih) Mining District is located in the core of the highlands of west New Guinea, an island long recognised as the product of a Cenozoic arccontinent collision. Geologic studies in the Central Ranges of the Papua Province of Indonesia (near Puncak Jaya, 4884 m) have revealed timing relationships, when combined with mechanical considerations, led to a refined model for the tectonomagmatic effects of collisional orogenesis and the formation of the spectacular Grasberg porphyry-type copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit.   An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. It describes the relationship between risk analysis and uncertainty, describes methods that can be used to quantify uncertainty, and suggests ways of reducing the geological and geotechnical uncertainties that are inherent in open pit mining.
