Placer Dome Asia Pacific operates eight mines in the region and has two closed operations that are either under rehabilitation or at the latter stage of care, monitoring and maintenance. All operating mines are scheduled to close within the next ten years based on current proven reserves. Mine closure planning and associated risk assessments are integrated into both strategic planning and day-to-day operations within the Placer Dome group. Mine closure is all about predicting the potential risks and Placer DomeÆs knowledge has improved following the planned closure at Kidston Gold mine in North Queensland. Planning for closure commenced in earnest in 1994, and focused on identifying the issues and associated potential risk to the environment, and ensuring that the most suitable control measures were implemented leading up to and following closure in July 2001. At all times during the process of planning, implementation, safety contractor management and post closure, the identification of risk and potential threats to the business have been identified and managed. Post closure risk assessment of rehabilitation strategies potential to fail has been completed in conjunction with URS and opportunities to manage these potential failures in perpetuity will be discussed along with lease surrender. Misima Mines is currently processing low-grade ore and plans to close in 2004. Planning for closure has been ongoing for several years with a focus on the social aspects and the impact of the mine closing on a remote island community. Misima Mines has assessed the risk profiles using a community closure focus group, to identify both the biophysical and social aspects for closure.

Using a typical small logging instrument (Neltronic KPD), a natural gamma reference section for part of the Brockman Iron Formation and part of the Mt. McRae Shale has been established in the Newman area. This is compared with the stratigraphic type section of Trendall and Blockley (1968). Folding and faulting are recognised using natural gamma logs. Because of the confidence with which stratigraphic horizons can be identified, less expenditure on diamond and percussion drilling is required to confirm stratigraphic position. Using natural gamma logs as stratigraphic control the apparent thinning of the Banded Iron Formation during iron enrichment is Demonstrated.

The performance of 460 stope surfaces at WMC ResourcesÆ Olympic Dam Operation (ODO) has been used to investigate the confidence that can be placed in the Stability Graph Method for design of stope dimensions. A detailed database of stope performance and ground condition information was established for each stope. The database contains all the required stability graph information as well as other factors thought to influence stability, such as discrete major structures, poor shape and exposure time. The performance of each stope surface was quantified by calculating Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Slough (ELOS). The performance of stope walls and crowns was plotted on the supported and unsupported case history stability graphs. Based on this information an ODO design limit of HR = 3.3 x NÆ0.33 has been suggested for stope walls. Walls that plotted above this line were 80 per cent stable, 20 per cent unstable and zero per cent failed. Below the line 60 per cent were stable, 30 per cent unstable and ten per cent failed. Supported crowns that are flat or arched in shape and are not within the influence of major structures can be designed in the stability graphÆs æstable zoneÆ with a strong likelihood of stability. The Stability Graph Method did not reliably predict the performance of unsupported crowns at ODO.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. Mineral resource estimation is commonly based on the accumulation of a series of local estimates. At times, the distribution of these grade estimates is not appropriate to the grade distribution of the data on which the estimates are based. Mineral resource grade estimation has an increased potential of being in error as the grade variability increases. As the mineral commodity value increases, greater grade variability within the mineral resource is tolerated. This paper directs its attention to mineral properties where the data average grade is 20 per cent or more than the data median grade at a specific cut-off grade. A mineral resource estimate is enhanced if it is supported by graphs which demonstrate that the sample data have been separated into appropriate geological domains. Each geological domain has a unique grade distribution signature, which can be graphically demonstrated simply and objectively. This signature will usually be evident well before the Indicated mineral resource estimates are available. The paper looks at the use of the log probability and MedAve plots to assess how effective domaining has been. It further outlines how the MedAve plot can be used to assess the integrity of the mineral resource grade estimate within a geological domain with the data on which it is based. The paper suggests that the overall grade of a mineral resource at any cut-off grade will be closer to the data median grade rather than the data average grade. Tips are provided to ensure that the odds reflected in the data grade distribution are not ignored and hence the risk that the project is affected by unrealistic estimates of the overall mineral resource grade is reduced.

An Investigation on the Effect of Chrysotile Particle Shape and Anisotropic Properites on the Rheology of Chrysotile Suspensions Chrysotile, a polymorph of serpentine, is a phyllosilicate mineral that occurs as a major gangue mineral in many ores (eg Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore, Western Australia). The rheological behaviour of chrysotile stems from two main factors: its distinctive morphology and its electrical surface charge. It is believed that these factors are central to the problematic rheological behaviour and low solids throughput typically experienced in the processing of such ores. In this work, a study of the effects of chrysotile surface charge properties and particle shape on the rheology of chrysotile suspensions was conducted. It was found that the rheology of suspensions of pure chrysotile is characterised by extremely high yield stress values over a broad pH range (pH 4 to 11).The disparity in the point of zero charge and range of maximum yield stress for chrysotile is consistent with the anisotropic nature of chrysotile particles. A comparison of the rheological behaviour of quartz suspensions (non-fibrous) to that of chrysotile suspensions (fibrous) provides a practical indication of the effects of the fibrous nature of chrysotile relative to non-fibrous minerals. The long, thin fibres are easily entangled to form suspensions with much higher plastic viscosities and Bingham yield stresses than non-fibrous particles. Chrysotile particle shape and surface charge are central to the rheology of chrysotile suspensions, although shape appears to play a more significant role in this regard. This fundamental study would be beneficial to the ongoing research for improved recovery in the Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore as well as other chrysotile bearing ores.

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. Work to date has shown that the use of Al2O3:SiO2 ratios is suitable for identifying potential gibbsite bearing samples. Subsequent confirmatory XRD analysis helps to refi ne this initial identification. Based on these methods, gibbsite has been mapped in two common settings:1. along steeply dipping faults, or2. in association with stratigraphic contacts where one unit is aluminous (eg dolerite dyke).On a microscale, the samples studied illustrate an association between haematite, and to a lesser extent goethite, and gibbsite. In these samples the dominant forms of haematite are discrete crystalline phases of either microplaty haematite or euhedral martite. Two dominant forms of gibbsite were observed:1. vein style gibbsite that cross-cuts (or infill’s cracks) in goethite ± martite iron oxide associations, or2. gibbsite intimately intergrown with and forming a matrix to microplaty haematite.Some of the gibbsite microstructures observed suggest that it may have formed during a very hydrous, possibly hypogene, stage of the deposit genesis. The presence of this crystalline gibbsite, and in particular its occasionally euhedral form, suggests that aluminium was at some stage remobilised, at least locally, and then precipitated from solution as gibbsite. These observations suggest that these has been a phase of gibbsite precipitation that may have had a close but complex relationship with regards to the timing of the mineralisation processes, rather than formation as a result of late stage lateritic weathering.

The wedge shape theory of the rock fragmentation range in bench blasting is presented according to the dynamic characteristics of rock fragmentation by blasting in open pit under the condition of hole-by-hole initiation. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to analyse the rock fragmentation mechanism. The rock mass stress contours, crack propagation and damage evolution of different moments were obtained. "The need for suitable geotechnical characterisation of the rock mass for underground construction is evident. The enlargement project of Railways of the Generalitat of Catalunya (FGC) in Sabadell is a patent example.In general, it is uncommon to encounter problems in the identification and characterisation of certain relevant weak rock formations, which affect project designs. However, all materials should be properly studied, as mischaracterisation can lead to a suboptimal design, resulting in construction problems during the course of the work.Good quality rock is generally not difficult to characterise, but this is not the case for Quaternary or Tertiary cemented soils. Geotechnical investigations based on boreholes do not provide enough information because samples are often badly damaged during the drilling process, if appropriate techniques are not taken. The samples can be altered and may not be representative of the in situ?material.The design and construction of the extension to the FGC line in Sabadell highlighted the importance of the characterisation of Quaternary and Tertiary cemented soils, in particular their rigidity and its underestimation. The twin tunnel project had a total length of 5.1 km, including five stations with 3.5 km excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM). The remaining 1.6 km was constructed using cut and cover methods. The TBM portion of the tunnel had a bored diameter of 6.83 m with an internal radius of 3 m and 0.25 m thick precast concrete segments. Much of the tunnel alignment passed through and was affected by the presence of certain stiff layers of Quaternary cohesive materials.In this paper the TBM challenges faced will be discussed in detail. In particular:  TBM excavation rate reductions and overheating problems due to the required excessive thrust and torque floating problems in the lining due to nil earth pressure over the rings and the development of an improved, controlled setting time mortar to address this issue block-in and block-out methodology for each station, in some cases with internal blocks to prevent earth pressure drops and soil scouring the relevance of performing simpler solutions, for example, hyperbaric interventions to examine the cutter wheel tools when it has been shown that interventions under atmospheric conditions were equally feasible the implementation of conventional bivalve machines as standard procedure for excavation of diaphragm walls in stations, where in fact, hydrocutter machines or pile boring machines may have been required, given the mechanical characteristics of the materials to be dug out.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and María Bertrán Llop, J, 2014. At Sams Creek a peralkaline granite porphyry dyke hosts gold-bearing sulfide-quartz-siderite veins. The granite dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite, and has thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The mineralised veins and the granite and lamprophyre dykes have been deformed during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with early magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration overprinted by sulfide and quartz-siderite veins and quartz-perthite-albitesiderite-pyrite-rutile¦sericite alteration assemblages. The sulfide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, with minor quartz and siderite. The gold contains significant silver (up to 30.8 wt per cent) and ranges in fineness from 692 to 844. Immiscible liquid-rich fluid inclusions, in quartz protected from recrystallisation by enclosing arsenopyrite, contain carbonic liquid that homogenised at temperatures of 320 - 355¦C. The Sams Creek gold deposit is distinguished from the orogenic gold deposit type by its stockwork veining, magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration, high sulfide content, ore mineralogy and the absence of mineralisation in the metapelite country rocks. Features of the Sams Creek gold deposit do not fit neatly into existing classifications of granite-related gold-bearing deposits. The peralkaline composition of the Sams Creek granite and the absence of molybdenite and paucity of chalcopyrite, are major points of difference with gold-rich porphyry copper deposits. The presence of a lowsulf idation-state ore mineral assemblage, carbonate alteration and carbonic fluid inclusions at Sams Creek are typical of many of the reduced granitic intrusion-related type of gold deposit. However, notable differences are: the reduced type granites are metaluminous and calc-alkaline; and Sams Creek only has high As in contrast to elevated Bi, W, As, Mo, Te, and Sb in the reduced type. The Sams Creek deposit also shows affinities with gold deposits associated with alkaline magmatism, and it appears to be a new variant of this type as an As-Au deposit associated with a peralkaline granite and lamprophyre.

The perception of the mining industry in the Australian community has changed considerably over the last four decades. This has been partly brought about by changing values and expectations of the Australian community as well as by global factors. The legal environment for the Australian mining industry has undergone significant changes. Among them, the High Court's Mabo decision which confirmed native title rights as part of the common law and environmental legal developments are dealt with particularly. It is suggested that the Australian legal environment is not necessarily the prime cause for Australian mining companies taking their investment off shore. This is a summary on how native title impacts on land tenements and some of the major issues that emerged since the `Mabo decision' and the Native Title Act 1993 are discussed. Environmental legal developments have resulted in liability facing directors and senior management in compliance matters .and in operating mining and other businesses because of changes in community expectations. In the next decade it is suggested there will be many drivers for more changes in the legal environment. Some of these are touched on including the changing roles of the Commonwealth and State Governments, the High Court as -law-makers and the changing relationships with indigenous people in Australia and in overseas countries. The changing legal environment for mining demands a national approach in many areas on the proposition that resource based industries are part of a national industry. The uniform law approach among the States has been taking place but this needs to further. An appropriate task force should be forward to review the entire legal structure and regulations affecting mining on a national rather than a State basis . The mining industry will need to work with expectations of a changing community which have powerful, but sometimes contradictory, interest groups.

The Mount Lyell Company's concentrating mill is situated about a quarter of a mile westward of the portal of the North Lyell tunnel, which serves the North Lyell, Royal Tharsis and Crown Lyell mines, being on the 1100-ft. level of the first named. The Comstock mine is connected with the tram system at this level by five and a half miles of steam tramway, two-foot gauge being standard throughout.The plant is well placed with regard to all essential services and has an excellent water-supply from a series of three dams on the West Queen river.MILLING ORESThe mill feed is a mixture of the outputs from the foUr mines mentioned, each of which has its characteristic ore, but, generally speaking, about half of the ore consists of siliceous schists and the other half of hard grey quartzite. The schisty ores are easy to crush, but, on grinding, while the schist slimes readily, the quartz granules are hard, resulting in the handling of heavy loads on the secondary classifiers. The quartzite ores are both hard to crush and difficultto grind.The principal sulphide materials are bornite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite, chalcopyrite being the main copper-bearing mineral.The crystallization is coarse in the schisty ores, but it has been shown that even the 200 mesh (Tyler) material contains included sulphide particles. At the present time the sizing of the final tailing averages 80% through 200 mesh.

The inauguration of a geological department for the mines of North Broken Hill Limited necessitated the provision of accurate plans and sections upon which geological facts and projections might be plotted.Unfortunately, the basic data were very inadequate. For the British Section, sill survey plans were available, but no regular stope plans. Filling surveys had been preserved for many stopes, but on innumerable pieces of tracing linen, without heights of any kind, and not altogether reliable (as indicated by the finding of very inconsistent duplicates). For the bulk of the old stopes no plans exist at all. The expenditure of much time and patience has resulted in the co-ordination of most of the existing stope data, but the British Section must for the rest of its life continue to have surprises in store, as has been the case for many years past. Manufacture and preservation of stope records has, of course, been on a sound footing during recent years. No reliable cross-sections of the British Section were available.The Marsh, Junction, and Junction North Sections have for the most part very poor data. In the North Section, level plans were fairly reliable, and cross sections of the lode made for ore reserve purposes have been preserved for quite a few years. No floor plans of stopes were kept, however, until a couple of years ago.Diamond Drill records vary in quality. Practically none exist for the Junction and Junction North Sections. Sunburst PCF (Penetrating Cone Fracture) technology has recently undergone extensive underground field trials at Leinster Nickel Operations, Western Australia. Trials with the Sunburst machine started in September 1994 and continued through to December 1994 during which approximately 130 metres of tunnel were developed. The Sunburst technology was used to excavate sub-levels through ultramafic nickel ore for future sub-level caving operations at the Perseverance nickel mine. The Sunburst machine demonstrated reasonable instantaneous advance rates, however, there are still a number of future developments/design changes which need to be addressed prior to the PCF technology being trialed again in a production environment. This paper benchmarks conventional drill and blast at Leinster against the Sunburst Excavator machine performance within similar tunnel dimensions and rock conditions. In addition to productivity and cost information; environmental considerations, support and labour requirements are also discussed. Problems with the current machine design are highlighted and possible future design changes are suggested. The Sunburst machine could be a suitable technology for advancing development through weak to moderate rock conditions and may also reduce overall support costs. With the potential for automation and the ability to reduce rock damage into the development tunnel walls, it is proposed that the Sunburst machine warrants further consideration.

A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of an ongoing three-year government- and industry-funded research program. In order to assess the feasibility of various bio-remediation strategies, field-scale manipulations were conducted using enclosed mesocosms (limnocorrals). Two manipulation strategies were tested: addition of algal nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) to Main Zone Pit surface waters; and addition of algal nutrients (surface waters) and dissolved organic carbon (deep waters) to the Waterline Pit. Nutrient addition was conducted in order to stimulate algal production and enhance metal scavenging by biogenic particles, while dissolved organic carbon (ethanol) was added to increase oxygen demand and foster the development of sulfate reduction in pit bottom waters. Fertilisation resulted in rapid growth of natural phytoplankton populations in the surface waters of both pits. In the Main Zone Pit, the stimulation of algal growth resulted in the pronounced removal of both dissolved and total metals (Zn and Cu) from surface waters, with higher rates of metal removal being observed at higher nutrient additions. Metal removal could be attributed to the scavenging of dissolved metals by biogenic particles and subsequent particle settling. A similar pattern of removal from surface waters was observed in Waterline Pit (Zn and Cd). The addition of ethanol to deep waters in Waterline Pit was effective in promoting sulfate reduction in the lower layer. The development of reducing conditions resulted in near-quantitative removal of dissolved Zn and Cd, presumably as secondary metal sulfides. Iron, As and Ni profiles in Waterline Pit exhibited no evidence of removal from either surface waters or bottom waters. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the passive forms of bioremediation tested in these pit lakes may be effective for whole pit-lake remediation.

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.
