Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

This paper outlines the feasibility assessment conducted to explore the possibility of constructing two submarine water supply pipelines beneath the Ma Wan Channel in Hong Kong using either horizontal directional drilling or tunnelling. The Ma Wan Channel is a major shipping channel in the Northwest New Territories, which separates Ma Wan Island from the mainland. The challenges faced by the projectÆs designers included space limitations on either side of the channel, marine department restrictions on construction activity within the channel and selection of a suitable crossing alignment and profile given the channelÆs depth, irregular sea floor topography and complex geology. The existing geological information indicated the proposed alignment would cross granitic and volcanic formations, which would likely be faulted. The primary concerns with horizontal directional drilling were:the length, diameter and depth of the crossing were at the limit of precedent experience in rock; the lack of available space at both the entry and exit sites; and whether the technique would be flexible enough to cope with the anticipated range of ground conditions. The primary concerns for tunnelling were: the possibility of encountering large inflows of high pressure groundwater; andthe possibility of encountering disturbed ground within the fault zones which could flow if not properly treated. As a means to evaluate and mitigate these technical risks for both construction options, a directionally drilled pilot hole was used to investigate the ground conditions along the proposed pipeline alignment. The pilot hole results indicated that either directional drilling or a closed face TBM drive were technically feasible crossing options at a crossing depth of 80 m. The results also indicated that either an open face TBM or a drill blast drive would need to be constructed at much greater depth because of the presence of highly permeable, disturbed ground in mid-channel at this crossing elevation.

The Iron Ore Company (IOC) of Canada Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m × 1 m × 1 m) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures.One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infi ltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realised.To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used shovel based camera technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with global positioning system (GPS) locations. A large population of digital images was analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

In the pyrometallurgical process of secondary lead recycling, a desulfurising agent, such as Na2CO3 is added to minimise the emissions of sulfur into the atmosphere, while silica is introduced into the smelter as a fluxing material. Subsequently, a significant amount of Na2O and SiO2 remains in the downstream reverberatory furnace and blast furnace slags. However, there is limited understanding of the thermodynamic behaviour of silicate-based lead slags rich in Na2O, posing challenges in accurately determining the optimal condition for targeted metal recovery and final slag composition. In this work, the equilibrium phase relations of the PbO-Na2O-SiO2 system in the primary phase field of Na2SiO3 are studied from 800 to 1000°C via equilibration-quenching method. Samples with different compositions were prepared and held in platinum capsules in air at these temperatures to reach equilibrium. The equilibrated samples were subsequently quenched and the phase compositions were measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results were then compared to those of previous studies and any discrepancies were resolved.

The Palaeozoic rocks of north-eastern Laos are an attractive target for gold explorers due to the complex tectonic history and lack of past exploration in the region. Alluvial workings along the Nam Xiang River and its tributaries have highlighted the potential for gold mineralisation in the Vieng Kham region. The Nam Xiang River follows a regionally-extensive NNE-striking thrust fault. Adjacent to the Nam Xiang fault, the dip of the main foliation steepens, and in many places the stratigraphy is overturned as a result of this faulting.United Minerals and Mining Company conducted a regional exploration program to explore for gold. This included stream sediment and rock-chip sampling, and airborne geophysics. Geochemical anomalies were followed up with more detailed exploration, including geological mapping and soil sampling. Despite the relatively deep weathering profile, gold mineralisation is associated with a low-level but well-defined gold-in-soil anomaly. Drilling has shown that gold mineralisation occurs on structures and fabrics parallel to the main Nam Xiang fault. The highest gold grades are associated with brecciated sandstones that have experienced strong carbonate alteration. This suggests that late-stage structures such as the Nam Xiang fault are the major control on gold mineralisation in the region.CITATION:Greentree, M, Cunningham, M J M and Liu, J H, 2015. La Colosa is a world-class porphyry Au project located in Colombia, currently undergoing prefeasibility analysis. As part of collaboration between AngloGold Ashanti and the AMIRA P843A GeMIII Project, the application of emerging geometallurgical characterisation testing and modelling tools has been incorporated in early stages of project development. The aim of the geometallurgical study is to map inherent comminution variability across the La Colosa deposit providing information critical for mine/mill design and optimisation. In this study, site-based data incorporating multi-element assays, quantitative analyse X-ray difraction QXRD bulk mineralogy measurements, EQUOtip rebound hardness data, and routine geological logging information from 59 diamond drill holes has been integrated with a range of geometallurgically specific comminution test (ie GeMCi, A × b, BMWi). The work in this paper demonstrates the integration techniques used at La Colosa to link routine data acquisition methods with comminution test results through the development of proxy support models. The integration incorporates a range of statistical techniques including principal component analysis and regression modelling. By creating proxy models, comminution index estimates can be propagated into the geological database enabling comminution processing domains to be defined. These domains provide the first spatial representation of comminution performance and variability at La Colosa and can be compared against traditional geological domains. This study provides the foundation for ongoing comminution characterisation as the La Colosa project evolves through project cycles into an operational mine.

The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) copper concentrator at Mount Isa processes both chalcopyrite ore from the MIM underground mine and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag from the MIM copper smelter. There have been numerous changes to the processing practices since commissioning this concentrator in 1973. Current management of the concentrator extends from grinding and flotation to concentrate handling (thickening and filtration) and tailings disposal (fill plants, tailings thickeners and process water systems).Predominant mill feed through the concentrator is chalcopyrite ore. RHF slag is processed when concentrator production exceeds mined ore production. The chalcopyrite circuit has two stages of grinding in parallel lines (Line 1 and Line 2). Each line has parallel preflotation and rougher banks, combining into a common scavenger/retreat circuit (including regrinding) and common cleaner circuit. RHF slag may be milled in parallel with chalcopyrite, utilising Line 2 flotation roughers and a Jameson cell cleaner. All final concentrate produced is combined and pumped to the concentrate handling plant. The concentrate is thickened, pre-fluxed and filtered in hyperbaric disc filters. Fluxing specification is set by the copper smelter, and filtered product transferred via conveyor belt to the smelter concentrate storage facility.Wet fill and paste fill plants utilise flotation final tailings as hydraulic or cemented hydraulic fill for stopes underground. Cement ratios and fill plant utilisation are varied depending on underground stope fill requirements. Tailings from the adjacent lead-zinc concentrator are also processed at wet fill. All tailings that are not utilised for backfill are pumped via wet fill to three parallel tailings thickeners. Thickener underflows are gravity fed to the tailings dams with thickener overflows recycled for site process water use. In addition to summarising historical operations, this paper will provide a detailed outline of more recent changes in the concentrator flotation circuit, equipment upgrades, reagent optimisation as well as product and process optimisation at the final concentrate handling and fill plants.CITATION:Lui, W Y and Radulovic, P, 2013. Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.

"The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. The Q-slope method for rock slope engineering was developed to enable engineering geologists and rock engineers to rapidly assess the stability of excavated rock slopes in the field and make optimal adjustments to slope angles as rock mass conditions become apparent during construction of road cuts or benches. An empirical relationship between Q-slope and long-term stable slope angle is now supported through over 500 cases studies from Asia, Australia, the Americas and Europe. This paper presents about the stability analysis by first-ever applying Q-slope method on abandoned quarry wall in Singapore. The 30 m high rock slope which is composed of monzogranite rock was severely damaged by blasting operation. As the rock slope is intended for public view the objective was to retain the natural outlook and without any artificial support application thus manual scaling was carried out to clear the loosed rock blocks. In the end stable slope angle of clean rock face is determined once again by Q-slope method.

NASA’s Artemis III mission is expected to return astronauts to the surface to explore and sample the lunar volatiles by 2026. These volatiles are anticipated to provide scientific insights as to how the Moon was created and economic value to off-Earth operations. These same volatiles can pose health implications to astronauts and Earth based personnel handling lunar regolith samples. Using Australian, USA and NASA airborne contaminant exposure limits and the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) measurements of lunar volatiles in the Cabeus crater ejecta, the minimum mass of lunar regolith that can be safely handled by humans on Earth and in spacecraft can be calculated. This analysis determined a 0.15 grams pure sample of Cabeus crater regolith within a cubic metre of air has enough volatiles to exceed safe working conditions, and 14.9 grams of pure Cabeus crater regolith per cubic metre of air can impact human life. The intent of this analysis is to assist safe handling and exposure calculations for the safe handling procedures of lunar regolith containing volatiles.

The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is the world's largest underground cavern for public use and was created primarily to facilitate the ice hockey tournaments for the 1994 winter Olympics in Norway. The cavern has a span of 61 m, is 91 m long and is 25 m high. Ordinarily, rock caverns have a span width of 15 to 25 m, however, temporary mining caverns of up to 60 m have been excavated and natural caves with even greater dimensions occur. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is unique as it is for public use with a capacity for 5800 spectators. Blasting was conducted with a high production rate at normal costs due to detailed planning and strict supervision of each round. The initiation system and vibration monitors were the main tools to control vibration levels and to facilitate a high production rate. It was of utmost importance that the rock remaining in the roofs and walls was of high quality after blasting to avoid rock fall, rock slides and excessive maintenance work.

Wet sticky iron ore poses particular difficulties in every aspect of the material handling process. Material hang-ups in bins, pipes and chutes; carry-back and spillage due to insufficient belt cleaning; clogging of screens; malfunctioning of crushers as well as rat holing of gravity reclaimed stockpiles are all predominantly due to the inherent cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore (Roberts, 1993). Limited understanding and quantitative measures on the stickiness of such a material significantly lower the mining operation efficiency.This research aims to investigate the cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore on physical modelling, experimental techniques and numerical implementation. Initially, the suitable bridging mechanism that contributes to the cohesive and adhesive forces within the iron ore material was identified (Hering, Martin and Stohrer, 1989; Rumpf, 1958). A cohesion/adhesion energy density factor based contact model was then introduced to describe the stickiness of the material. Secondly, an experimental system was proposed to directly test the stickiness of the material. Such a system is able to obtain both the cohesive/adhesive shear force and tensile force of the material at a specific moisture content. Lastly, the implementation of the proposed cohesion/adhesion model into the discrete element modelling (DEM) software was also discussed. A cohesion/adhesion calibration for modelling wet sticky iron ore in DEM was then conducted to ensure the material modelled in the simulation is reflective of the reality.From the study, understanding of the cohesion/adhesion characteristics of the wet iron ore material is significantly enhanced. Experimental and numerical outcomes can be directly applied for better designing or optimising the material handling processes that involve wet sticky iron ore. ArcelorMittal Prijedor is a goethitic iron ore mine located in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which mainly supplies ArcelorMittal’s European subsidiaries. Annual production of the asset stands at the level of 1.5–2.1 million tons of iron ore product which is sent to ArcelorMittal Zenica steelmaking plant. Two types of products with approximately 50 per cent Fe are generated in Prijedor through a process composed by crushing, screening, and magnetic separation stages. Within this process one of the tailings produced is called ‘ultrafines’. The ‘ultrafines’ product corresponds to the desliming hydrocyclones overflow in Prijedor plant, which is classified in a size fraction below 25 μm and corresponds to about 5 per cent of feed. This material is richer in iron than the coarser size fractions of the ore but do not present a good performance in concentration processes. In this way, several studies have been carried out during the last years to find solutions to use the ‘ultrafines’ material without success. In this context, the possibility of dehydroxylate the goethite contained in the material transforming the mineral into hematite and thus increasing the iron grade of the final product was investigated. During the research, several dehydroxylation tests with different temperatures and time of exposure were performed. Using dihydroxylation process at temperatures higher than 800°C it was possible to produce a material with 43 per cent Fe from the original 39 per cent Fe ‘ultrafines’ sample. In addition, the dehydroxylation tests confirmed that goethite becomes completely transformed into hematite at 400°C (with an exposure time of 60 mins) and material is completely sintered at 1200°C. A simulation study based on dehydroxylation tests results showed that it would be possible to use a ‘ultrafines’ product with Fe grade higher than 45 per cent to produce a material with 50 per cent Fe through a complete dehydroxylation process.

A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. The graphical results show the three corresponding waste dump progression patterns over the life-of-mine, providing the optimised long-term forecast of the operation.CITATION:Li, Y, Topal, E and Ramazan, S, 2014. ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE (MR. J. G. SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE AWARD TO ELLIOTT SYLVESTER TIMOTHY O'DRISCOLLTim O'Driscoll comes from a mixture of Irish and Scottish stock. His family on the paternal side settled on land in Western Australia in the middle of the last century. His family on the maternal side were part of the W.A. goldfields scenc, including places such as Kanowna, and the Great Fingal mine, near Cue, where his grandfather lies buried.The combination of land and mining environments may perhaps have contributed to an innate interest in geology shared by Tim and his two brothers, all of whom became geologists.Tim showed an early liking for mathematical and geometric subjects, and in his B.Sc. studies at the University of Western Australia he took a major in mathematics along with geology in 1940.His first job was on the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, and then at Norseman. After serving as a flying boat navigator in the north and south Pacific theatres in World War II he returned to Kalgoorlie and thence to Broken Hill.

El Teniente Mine started the exploitation of the primary rock in the beginning of the 1980s decade, using caving methods. Since the beginning the mining activities have induced seismicity including some occasional rockbursts. Owing to the relevant damages, the mining operations were stopped in some production sectors. This paper describes the concepts that have been used in order to control the induced seismicity based on the strategies for controlling the rockmass breaking process, which depend on mining parameters. It also presents the main concepts applied in the Teniente Sub6 sector design and the experience collected during its sector exploitation.

Zhangmatun Iron Mine is situated in the suburbs of Jinan city. Shandong, China. Because of surface environmental constraints, no suitable site can he selected to dispose of mill waste. The full mill tailings must be disposed of underground. This paper deals with the work conducted at Zhangmatun mine to develop a total tailings backfill system, taking advantage of a double- shaft blade mixer and an activating agitator to prepare backfill. Cement and ground slag are added to tailings for strength development. Two scopes have been filled and the pillars have been effectively mined out during the field trial. The application of innovative total tailings backfill technology is a new concept at the mine. Detailed planning has achieved a close integration of mining, milling and backfilling. Full mill tailings, with or without rock, are disposed of underground in a continuous process to fill, totally and systematically, the cavities formed by mining.
