All major companies now producing iron ore in Brazil currently employ or are planning to employ some sort of concentration method to upgrade their fine sized products (sinter feed fines and pellet feed fines). The criteria for the selection of the most suitable concentration method for each application include a series of parameters; the most important among them being related to ore mineralogy. This paper reviews the concentration operations currently employed in Brazil and shows how ore mineralogy plays a fundamental role in the selection of a given method. Examples involving gravity concentration (jigs and spirals), magnetic separation (Rare Earth wet drums, ferrous wheel, and Jones type magnetic separators) and flotation (especially column flotation) are discussed. Fundamentally important for the selection of a concentration method is the mineralogy of iron-bearing minerals and gangue minerals presented to the feed to the concentration unit operation. For instance, the presence of liberated quartz as the major gangue mineral for a pellet feed size stream generally indicates that flotation will be the best selection for the concentration of that stream. However, even if magnetite is present only in the form of crystal relicts within hematite grains, it may lead to the selection of either magnetic separation alone or a combination of magnetic separation and flotation for concentrating such material. Presence of gibbsite and/or kaolinite as the major phase containing alumina will also affect the selection of the concentration method in all cases. Again for the case of pellet feed size streams, kaolinite does not interfere with flotation whereas gibbsite tends to contaminate flotation concentrate (pellet feed fines) as it is depressed together with iron oxides and hydroxides during the reverse cationic flotation process.

To achieve continual improvements, many operators are turning to contractors to provide the necessary technology. Deformation of the lithosphere by tectonic forces is investigated from both observational and theoretical standpoints. Global and regional geophysical data bases, coupled with the means for their rapid display and analysis, facilitate recognition of areas of the con- tinents and oceans where the response of the lithosphere to these deforming processes might fruitfully be studied. Gravity anomalies, from Seasat altimeter data and from land and shipboard measurements, provide critical infor- mation on the isostatic state of deformed lithosphere and therefore on its thermal and mechanical properties.

The initial development fl6tation testwork on Mt. Windarra op was completed on composited drill core intersections at the.Australian Mineral Development Laboratory. An exploratory winze provided samples, from the 130 M. level of the Mt. Windarra mine, for pilot plant and bench development tests. A limited test programme was initiated on the South Windarra drill core composites. Detailed mineralogy has been completed on selected samples from both ore deposits.

Keast (a hill of tailing) began as early as 1940, it was not until the Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.) was installed at Cockle Creek by Sulphide Corporation that its treatment became eooncmically feasible. Early investigations and milling operations which began in mid-1976, with their developments are described. Metal recovery involves sulphide flotation, oxide flotation and gravity techniques.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

An alternative leaching system for rare earth element recovery from monazite is under development. The initial stage utilises oxalic acid to convert the rare earth phosphate into an oxalate salt through dissolution and reprecipitation and it is the efficiency of this stage that governs the overall recovery achieved. It has previously been proposed that lixiviant consumption is the primary limitation in this process. This work further investigates a range of conditions in an attempt to further elucidate the factors influencing the achievable conversion in this stage. It has been shown that the pH may be governed by multiple reactions both consuming and producing acid (thus the mild change over time). The importance of proper mixing and potential to operate at lower temperature with only moderate impact on kinetics has also been demonstrated. Staged/sequential leaching is more effective in fresh solution as opposed to restoring the lixiviant concentration with subsequent reagent addition, suggesting some impact of solution composition. However, contrary to previous findings, subjecting the leach residue to fresh solution resulted in significant decline in leach rate and overall dissolution. This may be because a greater proportion of conversion was achieved in stage 1 in this work than in previous investigation. This may indicate that eventual passivation or the presence of some more refractory REE minerals limits dissolution. Iron dissolution was relatively consistent upon exposure to fresh solution, displaying the ability of the solution to continue to leach the goethite component of the concentrate.

Many blasts have been fired in varying strata types in a number of mining operations. This has led to a good understanding of the product and the best methods to exploit its characteristics when designing blasts. Unlike some other low-density products, SoftLOAD« is a homogeneous mix that is easily handled and able to be loaded at high load rates. This paper discusses the physics of SoftLOAD« low-density explosives and how through correct utilisation, blasting outcomes can be significantly improved. It also touches on the various side benefits that can provide the blast designer with a more controlled blast.
