The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. A process has been developed to recover at least 75% of the 2-naphthol contained in cobalt precipitate produced during the removal of cobalt from electrolytic zinc plant solution. The recovered material is in a form suitable for recycling to precipitate further cobalt from solution. The process consists essentially of two steps. The first involves leaching of cobalt precipitate in 400 g/l sodium hydroxide solution at 95¦C in the presence of an additive. The second step involves treating the filtrate from the leaching stage with sodium sulphide to precipitate cobalt as the sulphide thereby re- generating the sodium hydroxide for recycling. The process is only marginally profitable at present 2-naphthol prices, giving a net return of 20% on a capital investment of $1 200 000. A reaction mechanism is proposed which accounts for the 25% loss of the 2-naphthol in the recovery process.

This paper compares the designs of heap leach facilities for four precious metal mining projects in the southwestern United States. These four proposed projects are of small-to medium-size relative to other operating mines in the United States, and are either permitted or in the final stages of permitting. The differences and similarities in the heap leach facility designs are compared with respect to site conditions, operating conditions and regulatory requirements. This comparison provides a summary of the state-of-practice for heap leach facility design in the southwestern United States and identifies current issues in project development and process material containment.

In the present work, the process of dephosphorisation of stainless steel was developed in laboratory scale by adopting a high frequence induction furnace, using BaCO3 base flux. By using BaCO3 - CaO - BaC12 - Fe2O3 Flux of about 110 g/Kg-metal, 30 per cent dephosphorisation degree was obtained a stainless steel containing 18,8 per cent Cr and carbon between 0,08 and 2,0 per cent. In addition, a dessulfurisation degree of 89 per cent was achieved too.

Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

A probabilistic approach is proposed for updating open pit slope sta- bility based on successful performance. The suggested approach is developed within the framework of Bayesian probability theory. In seeking solutions to geomechanics problems consideration must be given to inher- ent variability of shear strength parameters and to the errors in the esti- mation of these parameters. The latter can be significant and may lead to consistent overestimation or underestimation of the values derived from site investigation and testing. Conventional deterministic methods of slope stability analysis do not allow systematic modelling of uncertainties in applied loads or in shear strength parameters. Within a probabilistic framework indicators of stability may be calculated, e.g., the reliability index and the probability of failure. Based on observation of slope per- formance at any given stage of a project, the mean or the standard devi- ation (or both) of a shear strength parameter may be updated. Consequently the indicators of stability can also be updated. The appli- cation of such an approach is demonstrated by an illustrative example.

Following the accident in the Peterson section of Mufulira mine in September, 1970, a method had to be found of extracting up to 300 000 tonnes of ore per month from this area without inducing caving. Sandfill mining methods were chosen, necessitating a plant capable of producing both cemented and uncemented fill on a large scale. The paper covers the design and construction of this sandplant which is thought to be unique for its size, as it incorporates three 3 000 tonne capacity settled storage silos, a 500 tonne capacity cement silo, mixing tanks and a control room situated underground. The plant is designed to handle an aver- age of 440 tonnes per hour with a maximum of 660 tonnes per hour for limited periods, delivering either uncemented fill or cemented fill in proportions varying from 1:6 to 1:30. The instrumentation and equipment necessary to give one man operation of the plant is described and the fill mining methods now in use at Mufulira are briefly outlined.

The implementation of a process information management system (PIMS) is to provide a single online, real-time information system. This system provides a unique and completely open view for everyone, based on the key business drivers. It is structured around the three key concepts: process, maintenance and stocks. It combines numerous applications and provides accessibility to common tools and reports, through a web-based user interface, for every one from the floor operator to the General Manager. This æunique and commonÆ view displays raw, online process information that provides a quick health check of the operation at a glance, highlighting areas that require further investigation. The system is based on a hierarchical system of views, from the overview of the whole plant flow sheet to the more detailed operational shop view. It provides a synthetic view between continuous and batch operations, enabling the tracking of each batch produced. The batch view displays the critical batch components, and a comparison with each component of an ideal batch. This enables detailed analysis of each batch to identify areas of improvement. The information system will consist of an online reconciliation of stocks and flow data. This enables focus on the recovery of each process unit on a regular basis. This paper discusses the design strategy for the Process Information Management System, to ensure a unique and open view on the key business drivers is achieved and implemented successfully.

Mineral resource and ore reserve classification defines the risk associated with quoted resource tonnes and grades, allowing the interested party to make a judgement as to the `worth' of the resource statement. The JORC Code and Guidelines (1992) are now well entrenched as the foundation upon which gold and base metal deposits in particular are publicly reported. There are three categories of resource, namely Measured, Indicated or Inferred reflecting decreasing levels of confidence. The ore reserve, that is the economically mineable part of the resource, is classified as Proven or Probable and can only be drawn from the Measured and Indicated resource categories. As summarised by Stephenson (1995), resource/reserve classification has been an issue ever since the earliest days of mining in Australasia where, like elsewhere in the world, the industry, for a long time, lacked firm reporting guidelines. Those currently adopted in Australasia as the minimum standards for companies reporting to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) have been developed and revised since 1972 by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM), the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC). Debate is now underway in terms of adopting an international code. The Code specifically does not attempt to regulate either the classification technique nor the method of estimation of the resource/ore reserve, but rather places the responsibility for this task on a `Competent Person' whose experience will decide the appropriate approach for a given commodity/orebody. The Competent Person must be a Corporate member of either The AusIMM or AIG with five years experience `relevant to the style of mineralisation' under consideration.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government designs the stormwater storage plans in underground, as a measure of flood control in completed urban district and improvement of combined sewarage system. This time, introducing those plans, we report about IKEJIRI and SIN-KOMAZAWA STORAGE TRUNK LINEs design and construction. They are located in Meguro river basin of the Morigasaki drainage area. Both storage trunk lines have capacity to store 15O,000m3 of stormwater. They are in use for countermeasure of flood till Meguro river's strengthening (intensity 50 mm/h) is ended. And after the strengthening, they will be in use for improvement of river water quality, through the storage of combined sewage and first runoff, which, otherwise overflows weirs and flows to river in a rainy day. These storage trunk line's full length is about 5700m. Boring diameter 66140 mm (f = 2672m) and 47800 mm (I = 2866m) of these tunnels are constructed by Mechanical Shield tunnelling method. And boring diameter 3600 mm x 4000 mm (R = 180m) is constructed by NATM tunnelling method. We began works in 1983, and have a mind to complete in 1987.

One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

Cataclysmic or flood-like release of gas-charged brines, hydrocarbons and slurries accompanied widespread mineralisation of Upper Devonian environments. These are well represented in the Canning and Burdekin Basins of Western Australia and Queensland respectively.The Burdekin Basin provides particularly instructive vein structural sequences. These fall into organic residue to carbonate paragenetic sequences which are known elsewhere to record progressive decarboxylation. Fibrous veins indicate overpressure in fractures with organic residues, acids and gas derivatives driven to overlying groundwater flows. This combination of large flow rates and potent organic mineralisers led to extensive arsenical rare-metal mineralisation which is similar to that concentrated in Upper Devonian extinction horizons of the Canning Basin. Organic-residue mineralisation appears concentrated by certain hvdrostructures and targeted upon particular species. These controls need to be understood to guide modern management stragegies for mineralised organic and nitrogenous wastes.

Measurable physical characteristics of placer deposits include both fluvial sedimentological features and their related heavy mineral suite. These two important identifiable factors are interrelated and generally compliment each other furnishing a complete geological geochemical tool in cost- effective placer evaluation. Heavy mineral suite composition and character will change downstream from the provenance area and will compliment the related sedimento logical environment. Careful attention to gold particle characterization during the exploration phase will indicate new source additions, enhance deposit evaluation techniques and greatly assist in maximizing metallurgical efficiencies. Recognition of the various characteristics within these fluvial systems should enhance the total contained geochemical suite evaluation considering a finite source. Failure to recognize and measure these two important features very frequently leads to frustrated and unrewarding placer evaluation objectives.

Revised throughput rates, as a result of current mining methods and tight controls on mine dilution, have dictated a change in metallurgical philosophy at Renison Limited. Emphasis on throughput capacity increases has altered to a reduction in circuit complexity and operating costs. Extensive surveys of the gravity and cassiterite flotation circuits led to several plant modifications between August 1989 and March 1990. The coarse and fine gravity retreatment roughing tables were by-passed, the coarse gravity retreatment roughing tables were re-commissioned, the cassiterite flotation rougher capacity expanded and the gravity regrind cyclones re-configured.

A 1991 survey of 48 mining companies, employing more than 24 000 employees, showed that disabling injury and disease rates continue to be the most common measurements of safety management effectivness in the Australian mining industry.Of the companies surveyed, 22 claimed to be making regular safety audits. Of these only two listed the improvement of audit scores among their goals for 1991.Influenced by loss control management thinking, some managers have expanded the scope of their safety programs to include all accidental operational losses adversely affecting mine profitability.Learning from their new experience with total quality management some managers are now recognising that successful safety management outcomes depend on the effective management of program inputs. They are thus turning away from measurements of accident consequences - the failures of the management system - to measurements of management control.The new focus of safety management attention is now on corrective actions before accidents happen.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (IMR) separators.The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. Reported herein is the practical application of the vertical centrifugal screen termed V3-Separator. (V3 means vertical, versatile and vibration.)

Natural sphalerite associated with copper, silver, lead-zinc, tin and tungsten deposits from various world-famous mineral deposits have been studied by cathodoluminescence (CL), laser ablasion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to determine the relationship between trace element type and content and the CL properties of sphalerite. In general, sphalerite produces a spectrum of CL colour under electron bombardment that includes deep blue, turquoise, lime green, yellow-orange, orange-red and dull dark red depending on the type and concentration of trace quantities of activator ions. Sphalerite from most deposits shows a bright yellow-orange CL colour with lmax centred at 585 nm due to Mn2+ ion, and the intensity of CL is strongly dependent primarily on Fe2+ concentration. The blue emission band with lmax centred at 470 - 490 nm correlates with Ga and Ag at the Tsumeb, Horn Silver, Balmat and Kankoy mines. Colloform sphalerite from older well-known European lead-zinc deposits and late Cretaceous Kuroko-type VMS deposits of Turkey shows intense yellowish CL colour and their CL spectra are characterised by extremely broad emission bands ranging from 450 to 750 nm. These samples are characterised by low Mn (<10 ppm) and Ag (<1 ppm), and they are enriched in Tl (1 - 30 ppm) and Pb (80 - 1500 ppm). Strong green CL is produced by sphalerite from the Balmat-Edwards district. Amber, lime-green and red-orange sphalerite produced weak orange-red CL at room temperatures, with several emission bands centred at 490, 580, 630, 680, 745, with lmax at 630 nm being the strongest. These emission bands are well correlated with trace quantities of Sn, In, Cu and Mn activators. Sphalerite from the famous Ogdensburg and Franklin mines exhibited brilliant deep blue and orange CL colours and the blue CL may be related to Se. Cathodoluminescence behaviour of sphalerite serves to characterise ore types and help detect technologically important trace elements.
