Background BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd is one of the major iron ore producers in the Pilbara Region of North Western Australia. The company manages three separate joint ventures; the Newman, Goldsworthy and Yandi joint ventures and two 100 per cent owned operations, Yampi and Jimblebar. The Newman operations constitute a mine site at Newman and a 426 km railroad to Port Hedland where there is an ore processing/port site. The Goldsworthy operations currently constitute a mine site at Shay Gap/Nimingarra, a developing mine site at Yarrie, a decommissioned mine site at Goldsworthy and an ore processing/port site at Finucane Island (Port Hedland). The Yandi operations include mining and processing facilities at site and a spur line to join the Newman Hedland railroad. Jimblebar operations are scree and bedrock mining near Newman and include mining, processing and a spur line to Newman where it joins the Newman-Hedland railroad. The Yampi operations constitute a mine/port site at Koolan Island (which is presently being decommissioned). The combined BHP Iron Ore operations produce approximately 46 Mtpa of iron ore. This paper will concentrate on the processes developed and applied for the decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site. The Goldsworthy site is on the northern boundary of the Pilbara Region and adjacent to the western extremity of the Great Sandy Desert. It is located approximately 110 km east of Port Hedland (see Figure 1). The area is generally of low relief with isolated low ranges. The mine site being within the Mount Goldsworthy range area. The geology of the area is essentially Archaean granite with Archaean banded iron formation becoming dominant within the ranges. The chief soils are hard alkaline red soils. The vegetation is essentially shrub steppe with the main hummock grass species being spinifex (Triodia sp). The climate for the region is semi arid tropical. The temperature ranges from a mean low of 15¦C in winter to a mean high of 40¦ in summer. Rainfall is episodic, occurring mainly throughout the summer as a result of tropical depressions or cyclonic activity. The average annual rainfall is approximately 300 mm and annual evaporation may exceed rainfall by up to 2500 mm. Goldsworthy Mining Ltd commissioned the Goldsworthy site in 1965/66. Goldsworthy was the first iron ore operation and associated town site in the Pilbara region. The mine development peaked in 1977 with the town population reaching 1400 people. In 1982 mining ceased and the mining operations were relocated to Shay Gap, 80 km east of Goldsworthy. The Goldsworthy town continued as the base for the railing operations between Finucane Island and Shay Gap. BHP Minerals acquired Goldsworthy Mining Limited in 1990. The population for the town of Goldsworthy at this stage was around 450 people. The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

A liquid phase sintering (LPS) process for preparing basket anodes from nickel powder has been scaled-up and the innuence of compact green density and sulphur content, as well as sintering conditions (period and syngas now.rate) on the perfonnance of anodes has been evaluated. The product anodes have been tested in an industrial electroplating tank. It is concluded that if anode residues are to be minimised, then with a sintering temperature of 960"C, compact green density needs to be as high as economically achievable (85 - 87 per cent density of solid nickel) and the sintering period approximately 40 minutes. With these constraints, if residual sulphur contents of anodes are to be kept as low as those of commercial anodes, then the sulphur content of the green compacts would need to be less than 1670 ppm. At the same time, it is also found that residual sulphur concentrations as high as 2000 ppm are beneficial to anode pcrfonnancc and not detrimental to the quality of the electroplate. The ability of the LPS process to produce marketable nickel anodes for the electroplating industry is clearly demonstrated.

The 500 orebody in the upper levels of Mt Isa Mines in north-west Queensland was mined by sublevel caving and block caving from 1962 to 1969. The hot and reactive rock mass of this orebody provided significant mining challenges including ground temperatures above those resulting from the geothermal gradient. Recently Xstrata Copper has been studying the potential to mine this orebody by modern caving techniques. Part of the study process has included re-accessing the ore zones for diamond drilling and trial development. A cross-cut trial drive, the first primary development into the orebody in more than 30 years, encountered a temperature increase in development holes from low sixties to almost 80¦C in less than 10 m advance. The issues associated with managing this risk include sourcing suitable quantities of reactive ground explosives for a single small heading and the temperature limitations of the explosives and detonators. Risk management outcomes included controls to mitigate the safety and reliability risks relating to misfires. The control that dealt directly with the challenge of continuing development in elevated temperature ground was to cool the holes before and during charging. The most effective and practical cooling medium proved to be water. Rapid rock temperature recharge time meant cooling had to continue as close to firing as possible. Reticulation systems were constructed to allow cooling to take place up until withdrawal for firing. No misfires occurred with the cooling system and additional controls in place. This proved that developing safely and effectively in the elevated ground temperatures of the 500 orebody is practicable.

As the search for major orebodies continues, the regolith dominated areas of the Broken Hill region remain one of the major exploration frontiers. The past exploration philosophies emphasising bedrock related characteristics have been limited in their ability to effectively explore in the regolith dominated areas, that are a feature of most of the Broken Hill region (Figure 1). If mineral exploration is to be more effective across all of the Broken Hill region, particularly in the regolith dominated areas, an appreciation and increased understanding of the regolith and landscape features are a necessity. Ironically, there have been very few studies of the regional regolith and landscape features of this region. Owing to the previous lack of an established regolith-landform framework, this study initially concentrated on the general characterisation and variation in regolith types corresponding to the area of the Broken Hill Block, within NSW (Willis, 1989; Stevens, 1986). The approach has been to produce a regional regolith-landform map at 1:100 000 scale and conduct a complimentary program of regolith sampling and site descriptions. This was a basis to identify areas for more detailed regolith-landform mapping (1:25 000 scale) and for producing a regional stratigraphic framework and models for landscape and regolith evolution. This information can then be used to provide a basis for regional mineral exploration models and strategies. This paper highlights some of the regionally significant regolith-landform features and their general significance to mineral exploration. More detailed information on specific regolith-landform features and study sites may be found in Hill et al (1994; 1996; in press) and Hill (in prep).

After a short theoretical comparison of various typical large bell tops with the bell-less top for segregation and other ,ffects on the material flowing through the equipment proper, a comparative analysis between classical and the new burdening in the furnace is given, showing the theoretical effects of distribution and segregation on the horizontal pressure variations, temperature values and gas composition in the stack. Then some typical theoretical charging patterns of the bell-less top for wall and centre temperature adjusting, pressure drop corrections, dissymmetric local action for blow-in and scaffolding are described. Finally the available practical results on furnaces equipped with the bell-less top are compared with the theoretical statements made before and conclusions indicate that the new approach to burdening blast furnaces is a real improvement.

The combustion characteristics of Australian coals which contain high inertinite have been studied in a laboratory drop tube furnace and a Thermogravimetric Analyser. The pyrolysis chars and combustion residues were microscopically characterised using a modified coal petrography technique. Results indicated that the overall burnout of inertinite-rich Australian coals under pulverised fuel combustion conditions could be generally within a range of 97 - 99 per cent burnout. The studies showed that poor coal burnout cannot be generally related to high inertinite content in the Australian coals. The extent of coal burnout varies from coal to coal and vitrinite as well as inertinite may contribute to the unbumt chars in combustion residues. Combustion conditions had greater influence over char formation and coal burnout than the coal properties. However, under similar pf combustion conditions, coal rank and coal maceral composition had a strong influence over the coal combustion behaviours and final coal burnout. Simple correlations using coal properties may be used but with caution to determine coal volatile release and burnout at high temperature and rapid heating conditions.

The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 m below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop shaft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 m below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would be extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This will limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will be stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill. Results from the numerical modelling exercises show good correlation with measured data. This indicates that a high degree of confidence can be placed in the model input parameters and consequently in the design of the shafts to ensure their long-term stability.

A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

The use of geophysics in mineral exploration in Australia, and overseas, has increased dramatically over this century. This paper shows that using simple equipment with clever interpretation that the foundations of modem geophysics were laid, using all the same principles. The plethora and diversity of mineral exploration geophysical techniques does not allow a full description of their evolution to be given in such a paper. To convey this evolution, however, the progress of two different geophysical methods, magnetics - a potential field (passive) method, and electromagnetics - an electrical (active) method, are described. Examples of magnetic survey data from the 1920s and more recent vehicle home and airborne surveys are given to show the increase in data quality through technological improvement. A set of four airborne electromagnetic data sets spanning three decades is used to indicate the improvement in electromagnetic techniques. It is argued, that considerable progress is still required in the electromagnetic field to increase its interpretability.

A novel method for determining viable cells of the mineral leaching bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been developed. The cells were collected on 0.45/Lm cellulose acetate filters, washed with artificial minewater, and incubated in the presence of ferrous ion at pH3 in an atmosphere containing radioactive (14C) carbon dioxide. Colonies of bacterial growth were detected by the image formed on X-ray photographic paper (autoradiography). The method was compared with three conventional techniques and shown to detect three orders of magnitude more cells in cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the late exponential phase of growth.

The Bellambi Coal Company Limited com menced longwall mining at South Bulli Colliery in 1965. At present it operates three long- wall units in two seams. Although results to date have been less successful than planned, it is apparent that this type of mining has tremendous potential in the particular conditions at South Bulli. Massive sandstone strata above the Bulli seam is the controlling influence on face conditions. The earliest equipment proved to be inadequate and the Company has progress- ively replaced and upgraded the roof supports and ancillary equipment so that the present units are capable of producing high and consistent outputs.

A portable surface impedance meter has been tested extensively over a wide variety of geological formations both in Australia and elsewhere. It has proved a useful geophysical too] for relatively shallow mapping (i.e less than 100 metres depth) of faults, intrusions, dykes and conductive ore veins and can be used as a depth probe for overburden and glacial ice. Case studies involving coal seam mapping at Collide (Qld. Australia), galena ore vein location at Zeehan (Tas. Australia) and glacial ice probing on the Brewster Glacier (South Island, New Zealand) are detailed. The first results of a similar unit using a lower frequency with consequential increase in depth of penetration will be presented. The application of VLF measurements to monitor blasting in mines and in the location of earthquake epicentres will also he introduced.

Surface wave formation induced by a high-strength submerged jet in a bottom blown metallurgical vessels has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of the wave period, wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to air injection rate and tuyere configuration at a 0.23 m bath height. The results from high speed photography observations displayed the formation of rotating surface waves which circulates within the water model. It was found that the frequency and the amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The wave period for off-centre nozzle orientation was found to be lower than those of the centre configuration. The experimental results also showed that the frequency of a rotating wave increases when the tuyere orientation becomes off-centred . The predicted amplitudes were in very good agreement with the experimental values over a range of gas flowrates between 0.00599m 3/s to 0.01081 m 3/s.

Peak Downs Mine, a five million tonnes a year coking coal operation, strip mines a, series of Permian coal seams. Seam thickness ranges from 0.5m to 5.0m, and seams consist of multiple coal plies with intermediate shale and mudstone partings. Four 47m3 draglines strip overburden to a cover depth of up to 60m. Coal loading is by 12m3 shovels and 14m3 to 18m3 front-end loaders. Parting removal takes place where the layer of shale and mudstone between seams exceeds 0.3m in thickness. Parting has been removed by a wide variety of earthmoving equipment in order to evaluate the problem and to select the optimum method from an operational and economic standpoint. Multi-seam stripping of the thicker seams is accomplished by working draglines from spoil- pile benches. Coal seams thinner than lm are recovered by dragline and stacked in the pit for later loading.
